MUSTANG OFTHE MONTHSeptember 2009

I consider the Schneider family to be newbies in the Mustang ownership society. We have had “Sunshine”, a perfect namedon’t you think, for five years but we kinda mellowed into the club a few years after we bought it. The other thing is Ireally don’t know for sure if Sunshine is anything more than a standard 6 cylinder Mustang Convertible or even what herpaint color is called. Sunshine works for us and she seems real popular in the parades. That surprised me because at thefirst parade we drove in I looked at all those beautiful, powerful cars the other club members brought to the parade andthought “wow what am I doing here”. Well apparently Sunshine wasn’t intimidated. It seems all of the little girls, prin-cesses of the court I think they are called, were hoping they could ride in the yellow one. Go figure?

So how did we become a Mustang owner? Well in the summer of ’03 we rented a yellow Mustang with a black interiorwhile on vacation in Hawaii. I can’t remember why but in early ’04 it became clear that we needed a new car. After driv-ing a convertible in Hawaii we figured why not get one. So I researched what was out there. No matter what I foundJackie kept pointing me toward a yellow Mustang. I was skeptical because of a review I read which mentioned the fact thatthe car hadn’t seen an upgrade in its steering system since it was first made. I pointed that out to Jackie and she was un-fazed. So a yellow Mustang it was.

But knowing what you want and finding it are two different things. We searched the Tri-Cities and then Spokane. We didfind a yellow Mustang with a white interior but it wasn’t the car we wanted. Finally one April day while Jackie was away ata conference Wendell Ford called and said they had a car. Naturally I had no way to contact Jackie quickly and since I feltcompelled to snap it up I bought it. Now what? Do I tell Jackie or surprise her with it at the airport? I learned that a yel-low Mustang doesn’t hide real well in any parking lot. The minute we stepped out of the airport the cat was out of thebag. Sunshine has given us many fine hours of pleasure and I can’t imagine not having her sitting in our garage promising usmore fun whenever we need it.

UNDERTHE SHADETREEWhere to Start on a New Project or, How to Eat the Elephant

I hate to say it. I looked forward to working on the Ranchero for over a year and now that I have it, I’m having trouble get-ting traction. It’s like eating an elephant - one bite at a time - but where do you start? With the luxury that it’s a pure pro-ject/hobby car there‘s no hurry. The Mustang was intended to be a daily driver all along, so the first thing was to get it run-ning, if possible. Change all the fluids, belts, hoses, battery, and even a new solenoid. Next make it (semi) street worthy:brakes, windows (these were practically falling out), rebuild the carburetor; then it could be driven for body and paint, inte-rior, rebuild the engine and steering, and finally some upgrades: new stereo, three-pint harness, etc. This resulted in manyparts and systems being removed or disassembled multiple times, very inefficient.

The Ranchero is coming apart once and going back together once. Should make things easy right? Somehow, no. One thingall of the car hobby books and articles agree on is, “have a plan.” Some say, “Disassemble one section at a time.” Otherssay, “Work on one type of thing like trim, or electrical, and complete it so it’s ready for reassembly when you are.” Ofcourse they all say, “Document, document, document, photos, tags, notes, etc.” More that one person has encouraged meto, “Just replace the gas and oil and see if it will fire up.” This sounds fun, and there’s not much to lose, because I plan torebuild the engine anyway. But it hasn’t run in over ten years and I feel like [football season analogy here] Woody Haysdescribing the Pass when asked why Ohio State runs so much, “Three things can happen and two of them are bad.”

Not all of this hesitancy is bad. I was ready to start ordering body parts yesterday. I had some time, and project start-upfunds are available. The floor pans are clearly rusted out so that seemed like a good place to start. Dearborn Classics™ hasalmost all of the sheet metal I need so I opened up to the Ranchero pages and called them with a couple questions. That’swhen I discovered that they have answers to questions I didn’t even know to ask. Like, “Which part of the floor pans, frontpan, rear pan, or toe boards?” Uh, probably all of them - maybe? It would be nice to at least get to the point of knowingwhat the questions are. How many of these parts do I want to buy now, and how many can I order “just in time”? Ac-cording to my brother-in-law, (the previous owner) windshields were available a few years ago for $900. A few months agoI found some on the internet for half that. Now it seems they may be hard to find for any price. I’m wishing I’d bought onewhen I found them. Does availability cycle? Are there other parts that are here today and gone tomorrow? How muchspace do I want to devote to storage? I think Mike Little once talked about car parts stored under the bed and behind thecouch.

For now I’m planning a frame-on restoration, stopping just short of pulling the body off of the frame. In the short-term I’llkeep removing and tagging trim pieces and looking for a re-chrome shop. I found a motor at a flea market that I can attachpolishing wheels to for the bright work. Once I determine how much sheet metal needs replaced, my brother has a newwelder that he’d like to try out and floor pans will be a good place to practice. Maybe unknowns are just part of the fun ofthis hobby - like a puzzle. Any opinions and advice will be welcome and considered.

Future Shade Tree subjects will include “Chemical Tools, What’s in your Shop?” and “Batteries, How to Get the Most Outof Them.

LEWISTON’S HOT AUGUST NIGHTS

The weekend’s activities certainly started out hot, but cooled off a bit for Saturday’s big show on August 22nd. It was agreat day for a big show of 331 cars with five of them from the PNWMC. Bennie and Elnora Hodges drove their blue ’67coupe. Steve and Audrey Halterman drove their white ’77 Cobra II. Steve and Terri Boyer entered their ’08 Shelby GT.Loni Arbogast entered her ’07 GT. Jim Compton entered his white ’69 Cougar XR7 coupe. I also saw Phil and PattieEagon’s red ’69 convertible at the Thursday mini-show at Rodgers Toyota, but I did not see either of them there or atSaturday’s show. My apologies if I failed to notice any other club members’ cars at the show. In all, there must have beenclose to 2 dozen Mustangs in the show. Yes, they were all given Save The Date reminders for our fall show. As far as Iknow, none of us won anything.

The Saturday evening concert at Pioneer Park was good, but really LOUD. The speakers were rearranged from yearspast, but we’ve no way to tell if that was the reason for the increased volume or just a coincidence. The featured per-former was Mark Farner, formerly of Grand Funk Railroad. He and his band put on a good show with a mix of GFR’solder hits and some new music unfamiliar to me. The Lost Boyz, last of the 3 lead-in shows, also put on a really goodshow of hits from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Bennie and Elnora: Tim and Barb Weza thank you very, very much for your concertticket. Tim and Barb own a very nice white ’73 Cougar XR7 convertible.

We really need to get more members to attend this show next year. It’s a great show with plenty to do around Lewis-ton. It’s only 130-140 miles away for most of us (closer, if you’re in the Walla Walla area). The show committee man-ages to get a big name from the past for its concert headliner every year. I only remember it raining once in my 15 yearsof attendance and that rain was not on show day.
