The month of September marks the change into spring of course, and with that we all feel remarkably uplifted (especially after the soaking August gave us).

But September also has a blue tinge, as it marks the prostate health awareness campaign. Every year close to 600 fathers, sons, brothers and grandfathers in New Zealand die of prostate cancer – that’s about double the number of people dying on our roads each year and almost the same as the number of women dying of breast cancer.

We’re doing our bit to raise awareness with our cover change and by making a donation at month’s end from all our paid advertisers. I’ve made an appointment to visit my GP to get checked. Every bloke over 40 should take responsibility and do it. It’s also worth visiting the Prostate

Cancer Foundation’s Blue September website www.blueseptember.org.nz and passing the message on to the men in your life. They’ll probably thank you with a “yeah, yeah, yeah, I’ll call him Monday” and adopt a totally uninterested, quietly annoyed look, but they will think about it and may realise they won’t escape the subject a second time. You will be making a difference and who knows, your nudging might save a life.

Next month the annual Lifestyle Expo is being hosted again by Oikoumene Forest (see advert page 8) at Helensville Showgrounds on 30 October. There will be a lot happening. It’s a good way to find out about ‘stuff ’, watch the big boys toys and have a morning out in the sunshine (yes, I know it’s Helensville, but Chris has sunshine booked in). There will be quad bikes to trial from Bikesport, Treescape will be there with a tree muncher, answering questions about the things arborists like to talk about, there will be fencing demos and cool gear to play with.

Kaipara Meats will be there to talk about processing your stock… and lots more. We’ll give you a bigger rundown on who’s coming next month. For now, jot it down on the calendar… 30 October! And next month, our interior design feature returns also.

This building has acted as the community’s gathering place since the middle of last century and is, along with the three marae (Puatahi, Kakanui, Araparera) and the Mataia Homestead, almost all that’s now left of the old Glorit.

Standing solid and solitary at the side of the road on the rise where you leave Glorit to head north, the unprepossessing cream fibrolite building is no oil painting - as long

Whether you’re looking for directions to Mt Auckland, or to someone’s home in Glorit, chances are your destination will be described in terms of where it is in relation to that distinctive landmark, the Glorit War Memorial Hall.

time hall supporter and maintenance man Arthur Gray says, “It’s not the flashest hall in New Zealand,” but once inside you see evidence of how it’s valued in the meticulous care with which it’s maintained, in the Roll of Honour recording local men who served in the World Wars and in the gorgeous mural of the district that, painted by local school children, fills the walls at the back of the stage.

Talking with Hall Committee

supporters Raewyn Gray (Secretary and Treasurer), Arthur Gray (maintenance man) and Gill Adshead (hall archivist, past committee member, Glorit born and bred) I learn that, as home to the Ngati Whatua for many years, Maori knew the area as Mataia. During the Land Wars, Mataia was the site of many inter-tribal battles, most notably with the northern Nga Puhi. The area was also of great interest to kauri gum diggers in the early nineteenth century.

Gill Adshead is a descendent of Scottish settlers John and Margaret Gardner, who emigrated from Scotland in 1862 and who, with John’s two sons John and Charles, bought the Mataia Block, re-naming it Glorat after a place in Scotland. (Due to an early error the name became spelt ‘Glorit’). From then on, the already-rich history of the area was closely tied to the fortunes of the Gardners and their descendents, whose activities included establishing a sheep and cattle farm and building the Mataia Homestead, now a Category 2 Historic Building.

It was Gill Adshead’s grandfather Peter Gardner who, having served as an officer with the Maori Battalion in World War 1, decided that Glorit needed a hall as a memorial to World War 2 soldiers.

Gill’s documents marking the hall’s development record that in August 1954, as Chairman of the hall committee (whose other members were Bryan Gardner, Alfred George, Thomas Mason, John Peterson, William Frazer and Lorna Mason), Peter Gardner applied for a building consent for a privately-owned hall to cost fourteen hundred pounds.

A few months later the Minister of Lands, E.B. Corbett, designated a piece of Lands and Survey land (formerly owned by the Gardners) as the hall’s site.

In May 1956, as the result of a huge community effort, including donations of timber, free use of Gardner’s airstrip and free cartage and labour, the Glorit War Memorial Hall held its Grand Opening Dance attended, among others, by Arthur Gray’s parents. There, for the price of twelve shillings and sixpence (Gents), ten shillings (Ladies) or one pound (Double), you could dance to the music of the Stokes Orchestra before replenishing your flagging energy with a delicious Home-made Supper.

From its opening the hall was used for film screenings, courtesy of enthusiast Peter Gardner Jnr, with audiences treated to Glorit School Calf Club days and Glorit school reunion footage as an accompaniment to the main feature, which could be anything from The Lone Ranger to The Sound of Music.

Other community events included youth club, church services, car club, table tennis, polling day, school concerts, wedding parties, trivial pursuits, Elvis night, Christmas parties, dances (“The music got better as the night went on,” says Arthur) and “legendary“ New Year’s Eve parties.

Even in the 1980s, when the loss of farm subsidies and the slump which followed caused many people to move away, the hall was a happy hub for the children of newcomers on the newly-formed lifestyle blocks.

Today, maintenance of the hall is an-going task (as it’s on DOC land it’s a matter of “use it or lose it”) and the hall’s supporters put many long hours into its upkeep and into running community events doubling as fund raisers. Market days are a regular fixture and the annual dance has in the past given the funds a healthy boost, while at the same time providing a great night’s entertainment.

Many thanks to Gill Adshead, Raewyn Gray and Arthur Gray for their valuable contributions to this article.

Clearing scrub in difficult terrain with his excavator, Ken Borg (advert on next page) wouldn’t be without his TrackGrips.Spotting the idea in an industry magazine Ken, early adopter that he is, saw that the device would help him finish jobs more quickly and produce a better result. More on that in a moment …

A while back, before Ken knew about TrackGrip, I was taking video footage of him and his crew clearing gorse from a Kumeu farm, focusing on his excavator’s mulching head in action. I was almost mesmerized, seeing the 22 tonne excavator manoeuvre around the steep gully to get at the gorse sitting high up on the steeper slopes. At that stage of the year the dry ground was still recovering from the drought and it was impressive seeing how the machine could crawl

Before...

After!

We’ll make quick work of the tallest gorse on steep, hard-to-reach sites.

Steep gullies and hillsides are often left for gorse to overtake because it’s too difficult to control. Spraying requires a lengthy die-off period and still leaves the problem of removal. Burning can promote rapid re-growth and can damage non-target vegetation. With our new 22.5tonne machine and its fixed tooth

mulching head we go where no others have before. We’ll turn gorse-ridden land into productive farm land quickly and efficiently. You’ll save on spraying costs and re-vegetation or re-sowing can start immediately. Any gorse regrowth can then be more easily managed and maintained.

its way up and reach right in with its mechanical mulching head to remove the gorse and scrub in a surgical manner.

The farm, which had only recently been acquired by the Mertons, had a lot of gorse and scrub covering the hills and choking the productivity of the

landscape. When I asked Peter Merton why he had opted for mechanical clearing, he explained they had sprayed the gorse initially but, because of the terrain, brought in Ken because his mulching gear could eradicate the gorse and scrub quite quickly, allowing over-sowing. Also, Ken could

be selective, targeting the stuff they wanted gone and leaving any good vegetation standing.

While Ken and I stood watching the progress, the excavator was busy making an assault on scrub up near the ridge we were standing on when it suddenly swung around and raced off back down the gully, all the way to the bottom. “Hmmm,” Ken said, “he hasn’t finished here, what’s he up to…?” After returning to the top, the operator explained the machine had lost traction and he’d had to run with it until he found enough traction to bring the machine back under control. Excavators don’t have anti-lock and they do slip around on their tracks quite a bit.

Fast forward to this year’s Field Days at Mystery Creek, where I found John Burling inside the Innovation Tent with one of his brain-children, the TrackGrip. (I say ‘children’ because, as it turns out, the TrackGrip is just one of John’s successful inventions.)

As John described to me how TrackGrip improves traction for any tracked vehicle such as excavators and

bulldozers, I thought about the run-away excavator, and of how Ken’s digger could have done with a bit of extra traction that day at Kumeu.

John explained that the idea behind TrackGrip came to him when he was working on preparing an industrial park building site. His 20 tonne digger was slipping, eventually becoming semi-stuck, and he noticed how a quarter round post trapped under the tracks would roll under the tracks until it caught an edge and gripped. John got out of his cab, looked at the post and tracks for a while, and thought, ‘Maybe I could get something like that fixed to the tracks and gripping …?’ It was an idea similar to applications like snow chains on trucks or cars, or even sprigs on a footy boot.

John went to work making a prototype. The next step was to find a way of fixing the cleats to the tracks so they wouldn’t come unstuck. With trial and error he hit upon the design that allowed the TrackGrip to clamp around the track and grip to the links like a vice.

The design has proved to be a winner, and one which neither John nor anyone else has found a flaw with yet. John has

extended the idea and modified it for applications in extreme environments such as forestry and ice-covered terrain. After the launch at Field Days, John is now fielding calls from manufacturers and tracked equipment owners the world over.

So what are TrackGrips like from an operator’s experience? Would they offer a significant improvement? Ken Borg was previously using another variety of traction cleat on his machine and I asked him for his impressions of the TrackGrip. “The traction is just phenomenal. At the end of the first day’s use I was totally convinced,” Ken reported. He added that he was able to reach places to clear scrub he wouldn’t even contemplate prior. The other huge benefit was that it enabled incredible sideways traction, allowing him to manoeuvre and move safely across sloping terrain. Before using TrackGrips, clearing land of scrub and gorse meant he was often having to cope with the instability of topsoil, making it too easy for the machine to slide sideways.

As Ken points out, not only is he now able to work more quickly, he can now safely work longer in wet conditions. This gives him a competitive advantage. Before, his machine would lie idle, waiting days for the ground to dry out. Now, no scrub or gorse is safe!

The MightyGrip is heavy duty variation of the TrackGrip designed for seriously-steep terrain.

Suffer from nagging lower back pain?

Sick of popping pills for those headaches or migraines?

Stiff neck restrict your mobility while you’re driving?

New Chiropractorfor Warkworth

Dr Ben Bruce(B.Chiro) MNZCA

People don’t actually realise how important your spine is until it stops working properly and you start getting that nagging lower backache, stiff neck or annoying headaches and migraines.

These are all warning signals your body is giving you to tell you things aren’t right.

Here are just a few small things you can do to help look after your back. If you act on these 7 tips for looking after your spine you’ll have the best chance of not ending up in my office.

liftinG› At all times, avoid twisting while lifting. Twisting is one of the most dangerous movements for your spine, especially while lifting. The little discs that sit in between your spinal bones act as shock absorbers. They are made to resist compressive and bending types of forces, but are at their weakest when you are twisting.

› If the item is too heavy to lift, pushing it is easier on your back than pulling it. Whenever possible, use your legs, not your back or upper body to push the item. Better still, get someone to give you a hand. This is an easier option for them than having to help carry you into my office!

Water› Drink more water. One of the main causes of headaches is dehydration. Our bodies are made up of approximately 70% water. Drinking enough water is important as it helps keep the intervertebral discs hydrated and full, and able to act efficiently as the shock absorbers of the spine. If you are drinking bucket-loads and you are still suffering, the pain could be coming from your neck, in which case chiropractic care could help.

SleepinG› Avoid sleeping on your stomach. When the stomach sags downwards, it tends to arch your back, increasing the lumbar curve and your pain.

› If you already have lower back problems, placing a pillow under your knees while lying on your back cuts the pressure on your spine roughly in half.

› Lying on your side with a pillow between your knees may also reduce the pressure on your back.

SMokinG› I know this can be a touchy subject for some, but look at cutting back or quitting smoking. Smokers have more spine pain than nonsmokers, and they also heal more slowly when they have an episode of back pain because the chemicals in tobacco smoke restrict the flow of blood to the tissues in and around your spine.

We all know working on the land can give our backs some rough treatment from time to time, but if the above tips don’t help, maybe it’s time to seek professional help.

Last month I talked about revegetating areas of your lifestyle block or farm by planting natives. This month I’m still on the same track, except this time I’m concentrating on the negatives - the perils that await your infant native bush.

When revegetating an area, we are generally talking numbers of plants — hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands. Because they tend to be smaller grades, they are a bit more vulnerable to attack by nasties of various persuasions.

Probably the most clandestine and underestimated pests are slugs and snails, which do a lot of unrecognised damage. Their favourite trick is to come out, usually under cover of darkness, and munch on the plants’ stems, ringbarking them.

Generally speaking, the longer the surrounding grass, the more populous the slugs and snails are. A pre-plant weed kill certainly helps, as it gets rid of their habitat for a while. But when they appear, the cure is slug bait.

There are several different brands of bait to choose from, and all are pretty effective. You can either go through your revegetation area broadcasting the bait (pre- or post-planting) or be slightly more precise and drop two or three pellets beside each plant.

If you’re concerned your pets might eat the bait you can easily make a pet-proof bait station. We use big plastic water bottles with a throat large enough for a snail to crawl into. Chop the top off the bottle at its widest point, invert the top into the remaining bottle and staple it in place. Put a few pellets of bait inside and it will lure the slugs and snails into the pet-proof bottle.

Second on the list of plant-attacking pests are pukekos, notorious for their vandalistic tendencies. Pukekos have a couple of favourite tricks; they either pull the newly planted plants out of the ground, leaving them lying on top to dry out, or they cut them down to size with their sharp beaks.

They don’t seem to be interested in the plants as such - maybe they are looking for a tasty morsel underneath when they pull them out - but that doesn’t explain why they chop them in half. Don’t underestimate the purple peril, as a flock can deal to hundreds of plants within a couple of days of planting.

As far as remedies go, spraying your plants with smelly fish fertiliser has a deterrent effect as pukekos don’t like its smell. The birds can be shot during duck shooting season, otherwise, you can get a permit to cull them. And they’re not stupid; they’ll know when you’re after them and head down the road to annoy someone else.

Rabbits and possums, too, will love the gourmet spread of delectable plants you have added to their menu. Bait stations or traps will be required. Trapping is also the favoured means of control for another group of pests in revegetation plantings, the mustelids (stoats, weasels and ferrets). They don’t damage plants, but can have a devastating effect on native bird life.

All livestock, of course -cattle, horses, sheep, goats, deer - can do a huge amount of damage in a very short time. Good fences are essential.

Last, but not least, weeds will constantly be trying to invade and smother your plantings, so release spraying with weed

Slugs and snails can quickly ringbark newly planted young saplings.

killer needs to be done on a regular basis. A protective shield is a must to protect the plants from overspray. (See photo in last month’s Rural Lifestyle for a simple, easy to make option.)

The best time of year for spraying weeds such as gorse, woolly nightshade, wild ginger and blackberry is through the warmer months, from about November to March. Grasses and annual weeds can be sprayed all year round. You need to be particularly vigilant if you’ve got kikuyu grass, because it will quickly smother new young plants if left unchecked. Kikuyu

can be sprayed year round, as long as it is in active growth. If it’s been knocked back by frost, wait until it shows green shoots again, then spray.

Initially you’ll have to spray at around three monthly intervals. As the plants mature, the intervals between sprays will lengthen, but you’ll need to go on monitoring the weeds until the plants have formed enough canopy to starve competing weeds and grasses of light, inhibiting and eventually halting their growth. This generally takes about five years.

To maximise the return potential from supplement feed sources, they are urged to look hard at the true value of the supplements they opt for, and where energy value can be maximised.

Jan Soede, dairy channel manager and ruminant nutritional expert for livestock nutrition manufacturer, Viterra, says greater focus is needed on the type of energy available in spring supplement options.

“The temptation is usually to simply look at the M.E. (Metabolisable Energy) value of a feed, or simpler still, at the cents per dry matter cost. However ME can be a misleading indication of how much value lies in a feed supplement, with a higher figure not necessarily indicating a better energy option.”

Instead he points to an analysis of a feed’s Fermentable Metabolisable Energy (FME) content as a more

accurate indicator. A higher FME content in a feed indicates a greater proportion of that feed is actually

available to be broken down in the rumen to readily available energy for rumen microbes.

As drought sliced through North Island feed reserves for this winter, many farmers will be grappling with how to maximise the new season’s improved payout prospects off a significantly lower feed base.

High crude protein concentrations in spring pasture are rapidly degraded in the rumen resulting in high concentrations of ammonia in the rumen. High FME feeds containing starch and sugars are readily fermentable energy

sources and supply the rumen microbes with fast available energy to ‘capture’ and utilise this ammonia for microbial protein production.

Microbial protein, produced in the rumen, is highly digestible and can be utilized for milk protein synthesis. Besides providing fuel for the fixation of ammonia into microbial protein, fast fermentable carbohydrates like starch provide fuel for propionate producing bacteria. Propionate is converted to glucose in the liver, with the mammary gland using glucose to produce lactose, and lactose is the major determinant of milk yield. Besides milk yield and composition, a more balanced nutrient supply and glucose availability will improve cow condition, reproductive performance and consequently days in milk.

Generally supplements with a higher fat content will tend to appear to be more energy rich, with a higher ME value.

“However the presence of greater fat levels in a supplement will not result in faster fuel supply for rumen microbes. In some cases it can actually lead to poorer rumen microbe performance, and therefore poorer microbial protein production.”

He acknowledges supplementary feed like Palm Kernel Extract (PKE) has played an invaluable role in helping herds get through the lingering dry period. In addition PKE supplies an economic opportunity to add crucial body condition over the winter period to help cows achieve their critical body condition score target at calving. However he urges farmers to consider all options when requiring a supplement leading into spring.

As a supplement PKE contains around 25% of its energy held as fat, partially unavailable as an energy source for rumen microbes. The rest of the energy is coming from NDF or fibre, which is available for rumen microbes at a much slower rate than sugars and starches.

Supplements that exhibit higher FMEs tend to be starch based cereal type products, including barley, wheat and maize. Root crops like tapioca also have a high proportion of starch.

Soede acknowledges that starch based supplements may often appear to cost more than PKE, but he urges a full analysis to get the true value of these options.

“Just going on the lowest cost ME is simply not accurate enough, and can be misleading when evaluating feed options to supplement spring pasture to drive milk yield .”

Feed programs such as Viterra’s DietCheck programme can assist in accurately determining the optimal ration for dairy herds based on predominately grass systems.

For further information or a quote phone Lyndon on

When the feed pinch comes it brings potential stress to our livestock and to us.This can be exacerbated by a poor hay season should there not be enough growth after we shut up our paddocks at Labour Weekend. Converting extra spring pasture growth into balage (wrapped silage) is a very practical alternative energy source to get the animals through winter in good condition.

Balage is highly nutritious and provides good energy for cattle, horses, alpacas and other livestock. But although it is very popular and its nutritional value is proven, its use has been restricted to larger farming operations with the stock numbers required to consume large bales. Most small block holders do not own the equipment needed to feed out large bales and cutting up one large bale at a time, re-bagging the silage and re-sealing it so it can be fed out in smaller quantities is not a good solution because exposure to air sends the silage off.

We now have a solution, thanks to Lyndon Knowles and Helen Wilkinson of Kauriview Contracting, who have the equipment to cut, bale and wrap silage into very manageable 3, 4 or 5-bale equivalents, with the traditional big 8-10 bale equivalents still also available. To give you an idea of the sizes, the 3-bale is 80 x 50 x 80cm, the 4-bale is 100 x 80 x 50cm and the 5-bale is 120 x 80 x 50cm. A conventional bale measures 46 x 36 x 92cm. The beauty of the smaller sizes is that they can be dragged or towed on a small trailer behind an ATV or even fed out by hand. This is a great advantage for those of us who don’t own the equipment to feed the large bales out – we can now efficiently store and utilise (or sell) that lush spring growth!

When I spoke with Lyndon about their move to invest in specialised machinery like the Claas 1150 baler, he pointed out how needs in the area (south western Rodney) have changed in the last few years. While Kauriview Contracting still cater for the needs of working farms, small block holders’ needs are quite different. Lyndon says that handling these varied needs improves the logistics. With the new equipment, he can cope with baling up 3,4 or 5 bale equivalents on one property, then move to the farm next door and do 10-bale squares.

A major benefit of small balage for lifestylers is that a large barn area is not required and balage can be stored outside for convenience (not to mention the reduced fire risk). It is an advantage with horses and small herds that you can feed out in half bale lots by peeling off one slab at a time (make sure you re-cover the bale and feed it all out within 5 or 6 days).

For optimal nutrition, Lyndon says he can also spray the cut crop with inoculants, which will better preserve the quality,

but he adds this does increase the cost per bale. Inoculants are also an option if it rains between cutting and baling, or if the crop is drier than expected. Balage is far superior to meadow hay and horses and stock will enjoy silage over winter months, and also maintain better condition. However, hay does serve the needs of bulk, roughage and warmth and it also balances the richness and acidity of balage, so it is better to have a combination.

are tHere riSkS?By contracting an experienced Agricultural Contractor you minimise the risks. Many factors can play a hand in the quality of balage. However if there’s a foul ammonia smell or the balage is showing obvious mould it’s better to discard it, as using it is not worth the risk. Horses are especially affected by mouldy balage. If you’re concerned, or if there’s risk of mould, take a sample from the centre of the bale and get it tested (Hills Labs will do this).

WHat aBout otHer Cereal CropS?Lyndon has been hard at work in the off-season researching fodder crops that are high producing for our ‘marginal’ land across Rodney. Sorghum and triticale sound exotic, like something we might order when dining at a new cafe. Delicious morsels they are, but for the cattle and sheep in our lives. The real appeal of these crops is that they are very high yielding fodder. If you have 5 acres of pasture or more

that you could commit to fodder crops for 6 months, either for your own use or to sell off as balage, these crops could produce some very real returns.

Forage sorghum is a great “fast food” for summer months and is a nutritious fodder crop high in sugar content, making it very palatable to stock. The amazing thing is that the yield is 3-4 times the yield of conventional pasture and can be used for hay, silage, grazing or a combination of all three. It will rapidly recover after grazing during the warm growing months and can tolerate droughts, clay or sandy soils. Planting

can commence as soon as the soil has warmed to about 15 C, usually by mid October. Sorghum silage is high in energy (digestible sugar) and low in protein and is ideal to use with a high protein food for ruminants.

Triticale is a forage cereal that yields 2-3 times conventional pasture. It takes the superior characteristics of high yield and good grain quality of wheat with the greater resistance to disease and environmental factors common to rye. A much larger seed, with a slower growth rate than sorghum, it has greater resources to grow in colder weather. Some varieties (e.g. double-take) can be planted in autumn for winter grazing, while the plants are young and still growing vigorously, then grown on for spring silage. They can also be planted in spring for silage only. Stock enjoy it, it makes excellent silage for winter feed and is readily digestible.

If you’re looking for a way of giving your pasture an overhaul, planting a season of

either of these crops makes really good sense. You’ll have a surplus of feed for any drought and maybe extra to sell, and a stress-free winter menu. And of course, the small bale size options allow easier feeding out. After cropping you’ll be able to start afresh, replant with a good perennial rye grass and clover mix into freshly groomed paddocks in the autumn, with lush new grass ready to eat in the spring!
