The mission of The Valley Temple is the deepening of Jewish experience and knowledge for our members in order to strengthen faith in God, love of Torah, and identification with the Jewish people. . . through education, involvement in the Temple, and participation in Jewish life. We will foster the personal and spiritual growth of each member and each member’s family in an atmosphere where respect for self and others in enhanced. We will design the Valley Temple to serve those preferring the greater intimacy, informality, and sense of personal satisfaction that can be more readily achieved in a smaller congregation.

Let All Who Are Hungry Come and Eat... Jewish Family Service does a magnificent job in caring for the hungry in our community. Their new facility on the campus of HUC-JIR serves the hungry with a food pantry. Closer to the Temple, the Valley Interfaith Food and Clothing Center does a similarly terrific job in caring for those in need.

Passover is upon us again. Many of us know no hardship and can always afford a meal. But some cannot. Some in our midst are challenged by long-standing debt, others by loss of income or unemployment. Passover’s message has many memorable themes: “Remember the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” “Next Year in Jerusalem!” But this idea of “let all who are hungry come and eat.” is especially poignant.

This year, we are collaborating with Temple Sho-lom to create a meaningful service for the first morning of Passover. Rabbi Terlinchamp of Temple Sholom and I thought that a joint service in either of our synagogues would likely result in the non-hosting synagogue’s members not attending the service in another congregation. Howev-er, we thought maybe a different location would be more meaningful. A few years ago we held our first morning of Passover service at the Freedom Center. This year, please consider joining in our joint first morning of Passover service at the Valley Interfaith Food and Clothing Center on Wyoming Ave in Lockland. We’ll sit among the donated food. Our service will conclude minutes before the center opens their doors to feed the hungry.

We are free. Last June a group of us fulfilled the idea of “next year in Jerusalem,” by getting on a plane and traveling to Israel. The hopes of Passover may have never anticipated how difficult it would be to put ourselves in the position of the slaves of Egypt or the hungry....I think sitting in the distribution room of the VIFCC will make the words of our Haggadah come alive in a significant way—why not join me there to see if I’m right.

It is my fervent hope that you will find deep meaning in a real attempt to embrace the holiday of Passover. Eat some matzah, consider the gift of our freedom, and do something spectacular for someone in need!

Chag Samayach!

Sandford R. Kopnick, Rabbi

LEGACY GIFTS HONORED BY THE JEWISH FEDERATION

Vice President, Mike Shayeson, and Rabbi Ko-pnick recently attended a community meeting hosted by the Jewish Federation to introduce a new program to encourage members of congregations and Jewish a g e n c i e s t o c o n s i d e r r e m e m b e r i n g t h e s e institutions in their estate planning. Part of the Federation program includes a beautiful sculpture is being created for the lobby of the Jewish Communi-ty Center. As part of the installation, an electronic notebook is being compiled to honor past, present, and future donors to an institution’s endowment.

As you may remember, the Valley Temple created an endowment about 8 years ago, and many of the donors are acknowledged in the beautiful painting in the Atrium room of the Temple. All of these names will be forwarded to the Federation in gratitude for your participation. If you have remembered the Temple in your will, and have not informed us, please do so. All who have named the Temple as a beneficiary in their estate planning will be included in the notebook, too. Depending on the size of the gift, donors will be inter-viewed, and video can be included in this “electronic notebook.”

Feel free to send Wendy, Rabbi Kopnick, or Mike Shayeson any information regarding your plans—and they will see to your inclusion in this exciting proj-ect!

Please bring a non-perishable food item with you when you come to this service so we can add to the VIFCC’s

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL?

Religious School programming is made possible through generous grants from S.E.E.D.

and the Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati

Sarrae Crane, executive director of Wom-en’s League for Conservative Judaism writes that there are many commandments that focus on our relationship with God… but there are also many other Jewish laws that deal with our relationships with other people, and “the observance of these mitzvot is pivotal in shaping a kehillah kedoshah (sacred community).”

Each week as teachers plan their lessons for Religious School, they are thinking not only about the content (this month: the story of the Exodus, the halacha (laws) surrounding Passover, reading the Hebrew of the haggadah), but also how the ways in which they frame the content and the students’ interactions with the content continue to build the unique learning communities in their classrooms. It is our hope that our learning communities are sacred communities… safe spaces for questioning and discovery as well as for compassionate accep-tance. Kehillah Kedoshah does not mean everyone is your best friend… Crane asks, “How do we listen, how do we respond to those who disagree with us? We are challenged to listen patiently rather than respond quickly by saying no. We have to be able to say ‘I may not agree with you, but help me understand your position.’”

This is challenging for adults! And our task is to facilitate this type of environment for your children… Thank you for sharing your children with us and for reinforcing our mission to create a joyful, inclusive learning environment in which we can celebrate the stories, commandments, language, and holidays of our heritage.

B’ shalom,

Alison Weikel

MITZVAH CORNER

The mitzvah of Mishloach Manot (sending of portions) is a tradition at Valley. This year, adult volunteers made hamantaschen under the direction of Clare Deutsch. The 3rd grade Religious School class, with their parents assembled the goodie bags which were delivered all over town to members of our congrega-tion in need of cheer. It was a true multi-generational congregational effort! Check the bulletin and the website for other opportunities to participate in mitzvot, Social Action and Tikkun Olam programs.

PASSOVER 2014Let All Who Are Hungry Come and Eat!

A Few Readings Which May Grace Your Passover Seder

First Seder – Monday, April 14

The Four SonsAn interpretation by Rabbi Sandford Kopnick inspired by the Family Participation Haggadah: A Different Night

We are now at the section of the service called the Four Sons. In a moment we will read about the four types of children identified by our Haggadah: the Wise, the Wicked, the Simple and “The One Who Does Not Know What to Ask.”

While many of us seek to identify our children in one of these ways, the Hagadah is reminding us that all of our children learn differently. The Haggadah and the Seder, therefore, must address the needs of all of our children: the aca-demic and the academically challenged; the disabled and the able - bodied; the mild and the extremely active. It’s not about giving our children labels, but rather understanding that the story is important enough to embrace all learning styles - not just the easiest to teach.

And so it is with all that we want to impart to our children. May we always remember that allowing our children to learn according to their gifts enables learning, while forcing a particular style upon them, might only communicate our im-patience or lack of respect for the wonderful people they are. May we take the essence of this Haggadah passage to heart when we help our children find their voice as people and as Jews. Amen

READING (to be read prior to the final page which ends “next year in Jerusalem”)I have a dream that my children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin

but by the content of their character.I have a dream today.I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough

places will be made plains, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of God shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This will be the day when God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning.“My country ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my parents died, land of the pilgrim’s pride!

From every mountain - side, let freedom ring.”So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire!Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York!Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California! But not only that, let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!Let freedom ring from every hill and mole hill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring. When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we

will be able to speed up the day when all of God’s children, black and white, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of that old Negro spiritual. “Free at last, free at last? Thank God Almighty. we are free at last!” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Washington, 1963

THANK YOU, THANK YOUSpecial thanks to Sisterhood for their

generous donation to support our Temple dinners, camp scholarships, youth

group advisor and our Temple onegs

We are very grateful to the Wom-en of Reform Judaism/Sisterhood who work hard all year long to make these donations possible.

Spring has sprung! (hopefully!)

Thanks to all the volunteers, donators and buy-ers at the Sisterhood’s Used Book Sale! It was another successful sale, and could not have happened without you!

Also thanks to Amanda Stein, Kathy Klein, Clare Deutsch and all the volunteers that helped out with Chai Life’s Hamantaschen baking event! Flour was flung and dough was rolled and I think everyone had a great time!

We are still looking for volunteers to help with Social Action in helping Every Child Succeeds; we are collecting items (see Facebook for list) and would love help assembling bags on April 23 or 24. Please contact Helen Waits to volunteer.

We are still looking for MahJong players with game sets to help put together an instructional session for teaching those of us with no experience. Please contact the Allison Schneider at [email protected] if you can help!

Gift cards are always available for purchase, and they are a great way to help with fundraising. Contact Sue Spohr if you are interested in purchasing any!

Kroger cards are another great way to help Sisterhood support Valley Temple programming. Go to www.kroger.com/communityrewards to sign up or renew – contact Chrissy Knarr with any questions.

Only a few meeting dates left! Please join us on April 27 and May 18!

PURIM SCHPIEL CAST AND BAND

SPECIAL THANKS TO PURIM PARTICIPANTS

It may not be American Idol or The Voice, but our Purim celebration this year was something special. We would like to thank the following members of the Purim Band: Dorian Naveh, Alex Spohr, Jon Hoffheimer, Alberta Hemsley, Tim Gruenhagen, George Gruenhagen, Izzy Gruenhagen, David Snyder, and Ernie Waits (who was there in spirit). We thank the cast: Kim Codd, Sarah Singer-Nourie, Sam Lobar, and Josh Beasley. Thanks especially to Jeff Schlaeger who helped Rabbi Kopnick write the schpiel lyrics. And a special Valley Temple Todah-Rabah (thanks very much) to Jerry Springer for providing a “final thought” video from the set of his show—made especially for the Valley Temple.

We also thank Clare Deutsch and the many folks who worked with her to create all of the Hamentashen used for delivery to some of our senior members, the Purim celebration, and the Purim carnival.
