AGENCY NEWS Recreation.Gov, the interagency website that guides visitors to 90,000 sites on federal lands such as national parks, wildlife refuges, waterways, forests and recreation areas, has undergone a makeover. The site now sports a new design, improved navigation tools and expanded content. The redesign of www.recreation.gov is an initial step in a multi-year strategy to engage visitors with enhanced interactive content and more multimedia, mobile, trip-planning tools. The seven million visitors who use the web site every year will be able to make reservations, see ready-made itineraries for destination cities, and search for activities on an interactive map. Highlights of the updated site include: • Explore Trip Ideas: features interactive maps to help

visitors discover points-of-interest on public lands when planning trips to popular destination cities like Atlanta, Miami, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and more.

• Go Lists: provide highlights of places to go, events, and activities at federal sites across the country with topics including Day Hikes for Weekend Warriors and Civil War 150th Anniversary: Places and Events that Shaped Our Nation.

• Discover Great American Adventures: in-depth articles and destination spotlights featuring a wide variety of experiences and adventures found only in America.

The Recreation.gov website update is a joint initiative between federal agency partners – including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, National Archives and Records Administration, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It is a key effort under President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors Initiative, which focuses on supporting healthy outdoor spaces and making them more accessible to Americans.

The National Park Service’s Centennial Office has announced the selection of eight members of the Centennial Youth Leadership Team and twelve members of the Centennial Working Group. Both teams will assist in vetting and recommending strategic partnerships and initiatives for the centennial. The Centennial Working Group, including a broad representation from programs, parks and the Washington Office, will advise the Centennial Office through 2016.

The selected Youth Leadership Team and the Deputy Regional Director serving on the Centennial Working Group will participate through December 2013, at which time the opportunity will be re-advertised. The Youth Leadership Team includes a representative from each of the seven regions and the Washington Office and will have a special focus on identifying projects and strategies that target younger audiences. Both groups will begin by looking through a list of nearly 100 proposed ideas for the centennial and providing feedback on a draft strategic plan. Contact Alexa Viets at [email protected] if you would like additional information regarding these two Centennial working groups. The National Park Service is asking partners and parks to work together to post Success Stories to their Call to Action webpage, www.nps.gov/calltoaction/. This ongoing, active tool will be used to engage the public as NPS prepares to celebrate its Centennial in 2016. Contact Alexa Viets at [email protected] to learn how you can help in this effort. The creation and construction of Rio Grande irrigation project is the subject of a new classroom lesson plan, Making the Desert Bloom: The Rio Grande Project, which is available at www.nps.gov/history/nr/twhp/wwwlps/lessons/141RioGrande/141RioGrande.htm. The Rio Grande Project lesson plan was created cooperatively by the National Park Service’s Teaching with Historic Places program and the Bureau of Reclamation under an Interagency Agreement. It was completed in partnership with the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers. In this lesson, students will examine President Theodore Roosevelt’s vision for irrigating the arid lands of the western United States and the early history of the Bureau of Reclamation. Students also will consider short and long term problems the Project encountered and become familiar with the component parts of this extensive system. Rio Grande Project is the 141st Teaching with Historic Places online lesson plan.

The Willamette River Water Trail was designated last month as part of the National Water Trails System. The Willamette River Water Trail is one of nine National Water Trails to be designated thus far. The designation acknowledges not only the recreation values of the trail, but also the excellent stewardship of the state, local communities, and other partners who maintain the natural beauty and integrity of the Willamette River. The National Water Trails System is part of the America’s Great Outdoors initiative to establish a

conservation and outdoor recreation strategy built for the 21st century and to reconnect Americans to the outdoors. The designation promotes America’s exemplary water trails and their contribution to environmental stewardship, outdoor recreation, and river conservation. With the designation, the National Park Service will work with the state of Oregon and local partners to promote public use of the river and improve access to the water trail. The Willamette River Water Trail has developed a successful partnership among local communities, public and private entities, including the Willamette Riverkeepers, and with the state of Oregon in developing and maintaining the water trail and its access points. This partnership extends to fostering a shared mission of conservation and environmental stewardship. A guide to the water trail as well as additional visitor information may be found at www.willamettewatertrail.org

Blue Ridge Parkway Poetic Visions celebrates the Parkway and the 25 years of service provided by FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Members, as well as the public are invited to submit poetry, including haiku, journal entries, and brief vignettes of Parkway related themes. Submission guidelines are available at http://blueridgeparkwaypoeticvisions.com/Submissions%202.html. Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. and Pacific Historic Parks have announced a joint effort to help raise funds for the refurbishment of the USS Arizona Memorial. The Memorial had special significance for Elvis Presley. On March 25, 1961, at Pearl Harbor’s Bloch Arena, Presley performed a historic benefit concert that raised over $64,000 for the building of the Memorial. Over the years, due to the natural exposure to weather, salt water spray and foot traffic of more than 50 million visitors, the Memorial is in need of an extensive restoration. The restoration project was designated as the spotlight non-profit for the Elvis Presley Fan Club President’s Event in Memphis on August 14. Elvis fan club presidents, officers and members, who gathered from around the world for the 35th Anniversary celebration of his life and legacy, heard more about the Memorial and refurbishment from special guest, Brad Wallis, President and CEO of Pacific Historic Parks. Special events and Elvis exhibits are also being planned at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center when Elvis fans gather in Honolulu, Hawaii on January 10 – 15, 2013 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Aloha from Hawaii. In addition to a visit to the Memorial and access to the existing exhibit spaces, on January 12, guests will be able to view a mini-documentary about Elvis and the 1961 Bloch Arena concert in the education facility, enjoy a photo exhibit with rarely-seen photos of Elvis in Hawaii and check out a new, temporary display about Elvis in the exhibit galleries at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. Still in the early stages of planning is a public benefit concert to be held that evening at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

The fund supports organizations that encourage youth outdoor participation by creating more connections between children and nature, increasing access to both front and backcountry recreation, and providing education for both personal and environmental health. Applicant organizations must have nonprofit 501(c)(3) status or be seeking this designation. Proposed programs should encourage community involvement, focus on breaking down barriers to getting youth outdoors, seek a specific audience, and reach out to a specific community or place of interest. Programs should have a good chance of significant measureable results and momentum over a fairly short term (one to three years). The fund does not support organizations without 501(c)(3) status, general education efforts that do not include an experiential component that involves getting

youth outdoors, research, conferences, endowment funds, or political campaigns. Grants will provide up to $2,500. Funds may not be used for indirect costs, overhead, or other expenses not directly related to the project or program. Applications that come with matching dollars will be viewed favorably. Organizations may apply for more than one grant as long as the funds will be used for unique programs.
