The front multi-link MacPherson strut suspension uses a double-pivot design that incorporates a pair of ball joints and lower control links instead of a conventional wishbone at each wheel. A soft fore/aft ride link provides greater isolation from impacts and a stiff, laterally positioned handling link provides more direct steering feel and quicker lateral response.
Trio of Engines
The ATS offers three engine choices, including two new four-cylinders and Cadillac’s renowned 3.6L V-6. All of the engines feature direct injection and dual overhead camshafts with continuously variable valve timing.

The all-new 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder engine(RPOLTG)makesits debut in the ATS, advancing a legacy of high-perfor-mance turbo engines with greater efficiencyand more technol-ogy. Along with its 272 horsepower (203 kW), the 2.0T’s torque curve is broad and robust — delivering 90 percent of its peak 260 lb.-ft. of torque (353 Nm) from 1,700 rpm to 5,500 rpm — for immediate power at all speeds. At 135 hp/L, the new 2.0T is one of the most power-dense engines in theindustry.The2.0TisofferedwiththeHydra-Matic6L45six-speedautomaticortheTremecM3LTR3160manualtransmis-sion, a choice that’s unavailable in some luxury cars.

The control arms, the spindle and the body form an effective four-bar link for each side of the front suspension. There is also a direct-acting stabilizer bar.
AttherearoftheATSisthefirstfive-linkindependentsuspensioninaCadillac.Fourhandlinglinks(upperandlowercontrolarms)are used at each side to control wheel motion and a toe link at each wheel provides additional horizontal control, particularly dur-ing hard cornering. The stiff links are mounted on a cradle made of steel with hydroformed side rails to help optimize the car’s struc-tural stiffness and mass.
All ATS models come with a premium electric, variable-assist powersteeringgearfromZFSteeringSystems.Thesteeringcolumn and intermediate shaft feature stiff, direct-acting and low-friction ball bearing designs for almost no lash in the entire steer-ing system.
An aluminum hood, magnesium engine mount brackets and light-weight,natural-fiberdoortrimpanelscontributetotheATS’slowoverallmass.Butsomeweightwasdeemednotonlybeneficial,but essential to the ATS’s driving experience. An example is the cast iron differential: Engineers found they could improve fuel economy with a cast iron differential rather than a lighter alumi-num version.
And while the rear suspension is mostly steel, the focus on load managementandstraightlinksenabledsignificantweightsavingswithout using alternate materials. This helps offset the weight of the engine and transmission at the front of the vehicle, helping the ATS deliver its 50/50 weight balance, while also contributing to lower noise and vibration. A similar approach was taken on the wheels, where extra structural aluminum was strategically added to further reduce vibration.
Four-wheeldiscbrakesarestandard on all models, with available Brembo performance brakes. They are matched with a four-channel ABS system that is integrated with stan-dard StabiliTrak stability con-trol and full-function traction control.
Seventeen-inch (17x8-inch) wheels with 225/40-series tires are standard and 18x8-inch wheels with 255/35-series rubber areofferedontheATS,withrun-flattires.ModelswiththeFE3 suspension feature 18x9-inch rear wheels.
Advancing Safety
The2013CadillacATS’ssafetystoryisbasedona“controlandalert”strategythatemploysadvancedtechnologies—includingradar — to help avoid crashes. Visual and audible alerts help driv-ers identify potential crash situations and even intervene when a crash threat appears more imminent.
Many of the advanced safety features are standard and others are offered in a pair of available Enhanced Safety System (ESS) packages, similartothesafetypackagesfoundonthenewXTS.They include the Safety Alert Seat, Lane Departure Warning, ForwardCollisionAlert,AutomaticCollisionPreparation,FrontandRearAutomaticBraking,AdaptiveCruiseControl,SideBlindZoneAlert,RearVisionCamerawithRearCrossTrafficAlert,AdaptiveForwardLighting, andIntellibeamheadlampcontrol.

2013 Spark – continued from page 1
The Spark has a manual drive belt ten-sioner as opposed to a self-adjusting one. The maintenance schedule calls for the drive belt tension to be inspected every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) and adjusted iftensionisoutofspecification.Thisisa new procedure and a special tool is needed to complete the inspection and adjustment.RefertoWaterPumpandGeneratorBeltTensionInspectionintheService Information.
Transmissions
Two transmissions are offered: a 5-speed manualtransmission(RPOMX2)anda4-speedautomatictransmission(RPOMNG).
The 5-speed transmission assembly uses synchromeshonthefiveforwardspeeds. The reverse speed gear is driven by sliding the idler gear without synchronizer.
TIP: The transmission features a reverse gear mis-shift mechanism that prevents the lever from being shifted directly from 5th to reverse. When shifting to reverse, be sure to shift from the neutral position.
The optional new four-speed automatic transmission is the Aisin AW 80-40LE Gen2,acompact,lightweight,electron-ically-controlledFF4-speedautomatictransaxlethatemploysaRavigneaux-typeplanetary gear. The transmission has a lightweight aluminum case.
Whenstoppedonahill, theHillStart Assist feature prevents the vehicle from rolling before driving off. During the transi-tion between when the driver releases the brakepedalandstartstoaccelerate,HillStart Assist holds the brake pressure for two seconds to ensure the vehicle doesn’t roll.
TIP: HillStartAssistwillnotoperateif StabiliTrak is disabled.

Control Circuits and Test LampsA control circuit (output) from an electronic control module provides a logically con-trolled (by operator or software) voltage potential to a component or another elec-tronic control unit. This controlled voltage potential can be anything from vehicle ground to vehicle system voltage or a manipulated (pulsed/amplitude/frequency) voltage output.
The tool of choice to test a control circuit is a test lamp. When the control circuit is activated, the test lamp will load the circuit. If there is any resistance in the circuit the test lamp will not light.
Do Not Use a Digital Multimeter
Why a Digital Multimeter (DMM) voltage reading is not used to test control circuits:
•TheDMMdoesnotloadthecircuitbeingtested
•TheDMM’shighinputimpedance(typically10M ohms) would mask any resistive circuit condition up to 1M ohm.
•TherearealsotimeswhentheDMMvolt-age reading will not toggle or change states when commanding the control circuit on andoff.Thisiscausedbyinternalfilteringin the control module, holding a charge (voltage) on the control circuit.
Test Lamps
There have been two essential test lamps used over the years.
•Original–Lowimpedance(20Ω) test lamp J-34142-B
•Newer–Highimpedance(200Ω) test lamp J-35616–210
EithertestlampworksfinewhentestingaB+ (Battery Positive Voltage) or an ignition circuit. And up until the 2005 model year, bothtestlampsworkfinetestinganycon-trol circuit.
However,whentestinga2006modelyearand newer control module control circuit, the newer high impedance test lamp (J-35616–210) must be used in place of the original low impedance test lamp (J-34142-B).
The issue is not with the test lamp but with the newer control modules. The original low impedance test lamp (J-34142-B) requiresahighinrushcurrenttofireoffthe bulb. When this happens, the control module shuts down the output driver. It’s not because the output driver can’t handle the temporary current spike (up to half an amp), but because the control module’s software is calibrated to turn off the output
driver at a very low current threshold and in a very short amount of time (typically, only a few milliseconds).
Because the on-vehicle diagnostic valida-tion is done using the newer test lamp (J-35616–210), it’s important for techni-cians to also use it when testing control circuits.
The following note is being added to the Service Information diagnostic procedures whereithasbeenidentifiedthatthenewertest lamp (J-35616-210) must be used.
Note: ThissteprequiresusingaGMapproved test lamp (J-35616–210) or equivalent.Failuretodosomayresultinamisdiagnosis of the control module. Using a low impedance test lamp can cause the control module to temporarily shut down and not light the test lamp.
There are some control module outputs that will not work even with the newer test lamp (J-35616–210). In these cases, the control circuit test steps in the Service Informa-tion call out alternative diagnostic testing methods.

Disabling Transport ModeTransport Mode is a relatively new feature that reduces the electrical load on the battery when the vehicle is parked, which prolongs the battery stand time. This feature is used on vehicles being shipped outside of the United States and Canada, includ-ing2010-2013SRX,Camaro;2011-2013Cruze,Volt;2012-2013Verano,Orlando(Canada),Sonic;2013ATSandSpark.Forthe2013 model year, some models will be shipped from the assembly plant with the Transport Mode on.
When Transport Mode is enabled, the red battery indicator light on the instrument cluster will be flash-ing and the Driver Information Center (if equipped) will display a Transport ModeOnmessage.
When Transport Modeisonandthevehicleisnotrunning, theRemoteKeylessEntry(RKE)transmitter(keyfob)isdisabledandthecontenttheft deterrent and exit lighting timers are reduced. When Trans-port Mode is on and the vehicle is running, there is no difference in operation.
Transport Mode may be left on while the vehicle is in dealer inventory. The method to turn the mode off is the same as to turn the mode on.

Camaro 1LE and Dusk Special Edition Splitter Installation and Hood Graphic WarrantyTwo new looks for the 2013 Camaro are now available — the 1LE performance package and the Dusk Special Edition package.
1LE Performance Package
The 1LE performance package is offered on 1SS and 2SS coupe modelswithaTremecTR6060-MM6six-speedmanualtransmis-sion. It features monotube rear dampers, larger front and rear stabilizer bars, a strut tower brace, 20-inch aluminum wheels, ZL1 wheel bearings, toe links and rear shock mounts and a ZL1 high-capacity fuel pump.
Visually, the 1LE package is distinguished by its matte black hood, front splitter and rear spoiler. The functional front splitter and rear spoiler contribute to the car’s on-track performance by helping to reduce aerody-namic lift at high speeds.
Dusk Special Edition
The Dusk Special Edition package is available on 2LT and 2SS mod-els. It includes several unique exterior and interior features, including Blue RayMetallicpaint, a front splitter and rockers and 21-inch alumi-num wheels.
Splitter Installation
Splitter installation on 1LE and Dusk Special Edi-tion models is performed at the dealership. The package includes the splitter, three brackets, fas-teners and a template. The fascia is not removed from the vehicle during split-ter installation.
The procedure calls for installing the center bracket and the two corner brackets that support the splitter.
The splitter slides onto the brackets and is secured with rivets at the rear and front of the splitter from below the vehicle. All 29 rivets must be installed for the splitter to remain properly secured to the vehicle.
TIP: After splitter installation, the ground clearance of the Camaro is lower, similar to a Corvette Z06. Use caution when approaching curbs to avoid damage.
The splitter installation instructions are included with the com-ponents in the vehicle. The instructions also can be found in the Service Information. Additional time has been added to PDI to account for splitter installation.
Hood Graphic Warranty
The 1LE package features a matte black hood graphic manufac-tured and warranted by 3M. To maintain the appearance of the graphic, hand washing or a touchless car wash is recommended.

General Motors service tips are intended for use by professional technicians, not a “doityourselfer.” T hey are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and knowhow to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the information applies to your vehicle or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.Inclusion in this publication is not necessarily an endorsement of the individual or the company.

HVAC Blower Fan Operates on High Speed OnlyThe HVAC blower motor may only operate on high speed and be inoperative on all other speeds on a 2012 Sonic. This condition may be noticed after the vehicle was jumpstarted. The thermal fuse in the blower motor resistor may be open.
Follow the diagnostics in the appropriate Service Information and use the following values to determine if the blower resistor thermal fuse is open.
Terminal C is the common, so the circuit is:
C with A = 1.34 Ohm +/15%
C with B = 0.45 Ohm +/15%
C with D = 0.012 Ohm +/15%
C with E = 2.60 Ohm +/15%
Using a DVOM, place it on the ohms setting. If the resistance values are “0,” the
fuse is open and the resistor needs to be replaced. If correct resistance values are seen, then the resistor is OK for use and further diagnostics will be required to isolate the source of the condition.
If the thermal fuse is found to be open and there are no other faults found that would cause the thermal fuse to open, the condition may have been caused by leaving the blower motor on while performing a jump start. Instruct owners to follow the Owner Manual instructions when performing a jump start.
TIP: Turn off or unplug all accessories on either vehicle during the jump starting procedure to prevent possible damage to the accessories.
Thanks to Bryan Brunner
Steering Wheel Air Bag Shorting Bar
Transmission Information Summary
On some 2012 Cruze and Verano models built before June 21, 2012, the Air Bag/SIR light may be illuminated and DTCs B0012 and/or B0013, symptom byte 0E, may be stored in the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). This condition may be caused by a damaged shorting bar in the steering wheel inflatable restraint module (steering wheel air bag).
This condition often is intermittent. Replacing the X85 Steering Wheel Air
Bag Coil will not resolve the issue.
Wiggling the connectors at the F107 Steering Wheel Inflator Module may or may not cause the DTCs to set.
Follow the normal diagnostic procedures in the Service Information for these DTCs. If normal diagnosis does not identify the cause of the condition, replace the steering wheel inflatable restraint module (steering wheel air bag).
Thanks to Christopher Hightower
A summary of important transmissionrelated bulletins and Preliminary Information (PI) has been recently released to help build awareness of the latest transmission information available. The list provides a convenient resource for transmission technicians when performing transmission repairs.
The transmission information summary is attached to this issue of TechLink. It can be printed for easy reference.
Prior to beginning any repairs, it’s critical to always follow StrategyBased Diagnostics and check the appropriate Service Information for any bulletins or PIs that may apply.
In addition, go to www.gmtraining.com to learn more about the transmission training classes that are available in your area and online. In Canada, refer to the course catalog at www.gmprocanada.com.
Thanks to Mike Johnston
