It’s Nice to Meet YouAre you a little shy in social

situations and not sure how to get aconversation started? Here are a fewtips to help:

Relax. Don’t worry about trying toimpress someone; that will only makeyou nervous.

First things first. Introduce yourselfby smiling, offering a handshake andtelling the person your name.

Express interest. Your curiosity isyour best asset. Letting someone

know you are interested in themmakes them feel good, and theywill want to continue theconversation. Most people like to talkabout themselves.

No yes or no. Don’t ask questionsthat can be answered with a simple“yes” or “no.” Instead, make a relevantcomment, then ask an open-endedquestion. For example: “Those aregreat boots. Where did you get them?”As the conversation progresses, youwill have opportunities to ask otherquestions, perhaps about the person’shometown, education or family.

Listen. The secret to a goodconversation is to listen. People aremore likely to open up when they cantell you care about what they say.

Moderation. Too many questionswill seem like an interrogation. Offerinformation about yourself, too.

Now get out there andmeet someone!
