Rebels With A Cause UpdateThe documentary film Rebels With
A Cause, about the fight to save Point Reyes from developers, has enjoyed a long, successful run at the San Rafael Film Center. The film, by Nancy Kelly and Kenji Yamamoto in association with KRCB, ran for more than eleven weeks, with almost as many extensions.
Narrated by Frances McDormand, Rebels describes how, starting in the 1950s, citizens began banding together to oppose development and promote public open space. Using the fight over Point Reyes as a lens, it details how dedicated conservationists helped shape Californians’ awareness of their power to promote change, creating a rising tide of citizen activism that persists today.
Some of those original Point Reyes rebels are still around. Rebels Huey Johnson and Doug Ferguson joined the filmmakers for post-screening Q&As in San Rafael. Rebels Bill and Ellen Straus’s son Michael Straus attended a screening, as did rebel Marty Griffin’s wife Joyce. Last Thursday at the Nick in Santa Cruz, local rebel Gary Patton joined Nancy and Kenji for the Q&A. KRCB is proud to have been a part of this amazing project.
Find out where you can see this stunning film at rebelsdocumentary.org.

Many factors make up a healthy community. Some of the major indicators in-clude high school graduation rates, economic stability, physical activity, prevention
of injuries and access to health care, affordable healthy food, and a clean envi-ronment. For the benefit of our shared community, some of KRCB programming will shine a spotlight on these societal issues and remedies. Health Connections
programs are aired in the belief that knowledge is power, and working together we can make our community one of the healthiest in the nation.

This month, we take a broader look at health and delve into the social determinants underlying healthy and unhealthy communities.
Our Nation’s Health: A Focus On Social DeterminantsSunday, September 15 at 10:30 pm
In this documentary, moderator John King of CNN and expert panelists examine the wide-ranging impact of social determinants—poverty, where we live, education, access to healthcare, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe—on Americans’ health and our nation’s healthcare model. Zip Code: Your Neighborhood, Your Health Sunday, September 29 at 7 pm Dr. Claire Polmeroy says that if you look at the health of a population, it’s only determined about ten percent by what we do in hospitals, clinics, and doctor’s offices. Ninety percent of the health of a population is determined by other factors. In the documentary Zip Code, we look at how the environment in which we work, live, and play is the ultimate determinant of how healthy we are.

Still, 22 million Americans—nine percent of the population— still use illegal drugs, and with the highest incarceration rate in the world, we continue to fill our prisons with drug offenders, leaving shattered families and communities in the wake. Is it time to legalize drugs or is this a war that we’re winning?

On the fundamental question—evolution or creation?—Americans are on the fence. According to one survey, while 61% of Americans believe we have evolved over time, 22% believe this evolution was guided by a higher power, with another 31% on the side of creationism. For some, modern science debunks many of religion’s core beliefs, but for others, questions like “Why are we here?” and “How did it all come about?” can only be answered through a belief in the existence of God. Can science and religion co-exist?

about fatal lapses in care, understaffing, and a quest
for profits within a company that operates more than 400 assisted living facilities across the country.

Hispanic Heritage MonthTrust: Second Acts in Young Lives Sunday, September 22 at 8 pm
Trust begins in a small theater as a group of teenage actors receive a standing ovation. The film then takes us back to the beginning, when Marlin, an 18-year-old Honduran, shares a little bit about her traumatic childhood with the company. Amazing things unfold as the young, mostly Latino, actors of Chicago’s Albany Park Theater Project transform her story into a daring, original play.
Papers: Stories of Undocumented Youth Sunday, September 22 at 10:30 pm
Papers is the story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status. Eleven million undocumented immigrants live in the United States. Of those, four and a half million were brought to the United States as children. These are young people who were educated in American schools, hold American values, know only the United States as home and who, upon high school graduation, find the door to their future slammed shut. Sixty-five thousand undocumented students graduate every year from high school without “papers.” It is against the law for them to work or drive. It is difficult, if not impossible in some states, to attend college. They live at risk of arrest, detention, and deportation to countries they may not even remember. This is their story.
