Training News If you would like more information on training and capacity building opportunities for your organization, please contact APPL Education Coordinator, Chuck Benjamin, at [email protected] or 301-946-9475 x 225. Because of current economic situations with land management agencies and their non-profit partners, the need has arisen for new training delivery methods that don’t involve travel. The content for the Partnership Academy will be presented online, thus eliminating that necessity. Seasoned presenters will provide over 18 hours of in-depth instruction, facilitated dialogue, and curated readings over this five-day course. Each day’s sessions will begin at 1 p.m. ET. (For complete daily schedules, please visit www.appl.org.) Register today at www.appl.org. For the best value, register one representative from a nonprofit and one representative from an agency together at the same time. The regular partner fee is $595. The individual registration fee is $325. If you have questions or need more information, please contact Education Coordinator Chuck Benjamin at [email protected]. Upcoming Training: • Members of the APPL Training Corps will travel to

northern New Mexico September 26–¬28 to conduct governance training for the Friends of Aztec Ruins National Monument, with a tangential look at strategic planning and fundraising.

• APPL will also travel to Antietam National Battlefield October 17–19 for partnership consultation between Antietam, Monocacy National Battlefield, and Western Maryland Interpretive Association, the nonprofit partner. The consultation will review those areas in place that lead to healthy partnerships, with an eye on the future for all involved.

For information about APPL’s training offerings, please contact Education Coordinator Chuck Benjamin at [email protected]. APPL recently completed a three-part Webinar series Content Strategy for Public Lands Websites, in partnership with NewCity and its founder and president David Poteet as presenter. Given the success of this series, APPL will roll out other Webinar series in the coming fiscal year, focusing on topics of interest to the public lands community. If you have suggestions for future Webinars, please contact Education Coordinator Chuck Benjamin at [email protected].

Online Forums News APPL’s Online Forums are available exclusively to staff, board members and volunteers of APPL Member organizations. A full list of the forums may be found at http://lists.appl.org/lists/lists. To join a forum please contact us at [email protected].

August was a busy month for APPL’s Member Forum. Here are some of the issues that were addressed: • Seasonal employee wages • Mission statements • Postage types and response rates • Product development for commemorative events • End of fiscal year inventory procedures • What do you call your stores? • When park partners veer into product design • How does your organization process credit card

payments at events? • What types of insurance does your organization carry? A complete digest of all of these discussions is available in the Member Forum archives.

NEWSBITS Twenty-seven organizations received funds of up to $5,000 as part of the National Environmental Education Foundation’s (NEEF) Every Day Capacity Building Grants. The grants assist with projects including communications, fundraising, technology updates, website development and more. Read about the organizations receiving grants and what they are achieving with the funds at www.publiclandseveryday.org/grants/every-day-capacity-building-grantees. The Every Day Capacity Building Grants are part of NEEF’s Public Lands Every Day initiative and made possible with the generous support of Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc.

AGENCY NEWS The activities of the Department of the Interior contributed $371 billion to the U.S. economy in 2012, supporting 2.3 million jobs, according to a new report. The U.S. Department of the Interior Economic Report for Fiscal Year 2012, prepared by Interior’s Office of Policy Analysis, estimates the economic contributions of the department, including land and water management; energy and mineral development on public lands; encouraging tourism and outdoor recreation at national parks, monuments and refuges; wildlife conservation, hunting and fishing; support for American Indian tribal communities and Insular Areas; and scientific research and innovation. The report is the fourth in a series of annual economic reports initiated by Interior in 2009. This year’s report features a state-by-state map that illustrates Interior’s contributions across the country. A link to the map is

available at http://doildt.maps.arcgis.com/apps/OnePane/basicviewer/index.html?appid=96fbabbcf5df464191b68ca8dc1c8ea9. The full 161-page economic report, which includes a discussion of analysis and methodology, is available at www.doi.gov/ppa/economic_analysis/economic-report.cfm.

National Park Service The NPS Centennial Office and the National Park Foundation are looking for ideas on innovative ways to celebrate the upcoming 100th anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016. They are looking for those big, creative ideas that will have a lasting impact, are national in scope, and can become signature centennial programs. All NPS employees, partners and volunteers are invited to share their ideas. The deadline for consideration as a national signature centennial activity is October 20th. To share your ideas and find details about the process visit: www.nextcenturyforparks.org. The National Park Service will highlight 30 top stories using a new Tumblr site during this month. This pilot project, initially featuring parks and programs from the northeast, is one of many upcoming efforts surrounding the agency's centennial anniversary in 2016. Follow 30 Stories in 30 Days at www.calltoactionnps.tumblr.com.

USDA Forest Service The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released revised regulations prescribing policy for erection of memorials, permanent plaques, cornerstones, and the naming of facilities and projects under the sole jurisdiction of the Department. The regulations replace Departmental Regulation 5160-2, dated April 4, 2002. Current Forest Service manual direction will be updated to reflect these new regulations and will include guidelines to assist forests in responding to requests. Until such updates to the directives are completed, regional foresters will have discretion for approving or disapproving donor and partner non-permanent recognition requests. The regional landscape architect must be consulted on design details, to ensure consistency with the Built Environment Image Guide (BEIG) and the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) classes. The BEIG should be used to address issues of context and scale, eco-regional appropriateness, material, color, and to assure Forest Service image and identity are not compromised by single or cumulative actions. Forests and regions are strongly encouraged to work collaboratively with their partnership coordinators and regional landscape architects to develop short-term

partnership planning and design protocols to guide local requests and provide transparency to the decision-making process. For further questions, and to obtain informational resources on partnership recognition planning, please contact Leanne Marten, Acting Director, National Partnership Office, at [email protected]; or Joe Meade, Director, Recreation, Heritage, and Volunteer Resources at [email protected]. The recently released U.S. Forest Service National Visitor Use Monitoring Survey shows that U.S. Forest Service lands provide health benefits to tourists and $11 billion in tourist spending to businesses and communities that serve the more than 160 million forest visitors. The survey helps Forest Service land managers more clearly understand why people visit, what they do during their visits and their overall satisfaction with their recreation experience on a forest. Review the full survey report at www.fs.fed.us/recreation/programs/nvum/. The Chugach and Tongass National Forests have released two new posters in their series, More Than a Place to Visit—It’s Where We Live. The new 16x32 inch posters are available for free at local Forest Service offices. The posters depict the link between bears, salmon, forests and streams, visually exploring the cycle of life that bear and salmon represent, and underscoring the importance of forests to animal and human communities. The posters blend photography, art, and words to evoke the spirit and the beauty of these wonderful public lands. Rich in symbolism and representation, the powerful design of these posters encourages viewers to explore and respect the wild lands and inhabitants of Alaska’s national forests. Learn more at www.fs.usda.gov/chugach, www.fs.usda.gov/tongass or www.myalaskaforests.com.

Eastern National has added two new titles to their vast library of books on American History. They are: • The War of 1812: Official National Park Service

Handbook featuring essays by 12 prominent American and Canadian historians exploring key themes and stories of the War of 1812, from the development of Canadian and American national identities and the emergence of the United States as a military and economic power, to policies of Indian removal that emerged in its aftermath. Through abundant illustrations and area maps, this publication highlights National Park Service and Parks Canada sites that preserve and protect many stories and places important to understanding and experiencing the War of 1812. The book features an introduction written by National Park Service Director, Jonathan Jarvis.

• Slavery in the United States: A Brief Narrative History written by National Park Service historians Robert Sutton and John Latschar, and noted Civil War historian Rick Beard chronicles the history of slavery and explores the struggle for freedom by enslaved Africans and the economic, political and social impacts of slavery, and highlights the accomplishments of individuals such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Abraham Lincoln, who risked everything to destroy the institution of slavery in the United States.

The Glacier National Park Conservancy has named Mark Preiss as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), responsible for managing and coordinating all Conservancy activities with Glacier National Park and other federal agency partners. Mark brings to the position 25 years of experience working with non-profit groups in collaboration with the National Park Service and other government and private organizations to protect and enhance our natural and cultural heritage. He most recently served as Reserve Manager of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, a unit of the National Park system located on Whidbey Island, WA. Prior to his appointment at Ebey’s Landing, Mark served in leadership positions in numerous conservation and environmental organizations throughout the United States. Mark will assume the CEO position for the Glacier Conservancy on August 26th. The Glacier National Park Conservancy was formed on January 1, 2013 as the result of a merger of the former Glacier Natural History Association and the Glacier National Park Fund. The consolidation of these two not-for-profit partners of Glacier National Park has created a dynamic new organization that supports the Park by encouraging private philanthropy, public awareness, and education and interpretation for on-going and emerging Park programs and projects. In addition to fostering private philanthropy, the Conservancy operates bookstores at visitor’s centers in Glacier National Park, the Flathead National Forest, the National Bison Range, the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, and the Big Hole National Battlefield. As CEO and “voice” of the Conservancy, Mark will bring his wealth of knowledge and experience to implementing the strategic goals and objectives of this new organization and to creating and fostering support for Glacier Park and other federal agency partners at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Additional information about the Glacier National Park Conservancy can be found on the Conservancy website: http://glacierconservancy.org.

Grand Teton National Park recently served as the host site and paramount inspiration for the second annual Plein Air for the Park fine art exhibition and sale. Jointly organized and co-hosted by the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters (RMPAP) and Grand Teton Association (GTA), this year’s paint-out and show enticed over 40 professional artists from around the country to spend two weeks in July capturing on canvas the spectacular scenery, wildlife and wildflowers of the Teton landscape. The event brought 30% more in sales over the maiden Plein Air for the Park event of 2012. A full recap of the event may be found at www.nps.gov/grte/parknews/news-release-13-55.htm. In other news GTNP became the first National Park with every vault toilet vent covered to protect cavity-nesting owls from entrapment through the Port-o-Potty Owl Project, also known as the Poo-Poo Project. This month, staff from the Grand Teton Association donated their time to finish installing Teton Raptor Center screens on the 26 remaining open vents spanning the entire park. Volunteers from Macy’s Septic Services had already screened many of the vents during the initial installation effort. The TRC screen prevents small owls from entering open vent pipes as they search out roosting or nesting sites. The screens and supplies were purchased with a grant from 1% for the Tetons. In an effort to conserve cavity-nesting owls, Teton Raptor Center’s Poo-Poo Project has expanded far beyond the Tetons with over 1,000 screens distributed to seven different land agencies and 11 states, including Alaska. Teton Raptor Center will continue to distribute these screens and educational materials in an effort to screen every open vault toilet vent in the United States and to educate the public about the dangers of open pipes to birds. Learn more about the Raptor Center at www.tetonraptorcenter. The Mount St. Helens Institute is delighted to announce the selection of Richard Meyer as its new Executive Director. Meyer will fill the vacancy created by Travis Southworth-Neumeyer’s departure in May to join Trackers Earth.
