When I was a kid, sometimes mom and
dad would go for a Sunday drive. They
weren’t really heading anywhere,
exactly; they just wanted to drive around
in the country and see stuff.
Now, for an adult in the ‘70’s, this might
have been great entertainment. I can’t
really speak to their experience… but I
can attest, with some conviction, that to
be trappedwithmy two brothers in a back
seat on a trip to nowhere made for an
especially long afternoon. You couldn’t
really ask, “Are we there yet?”, because
they weren’t headed to a “there”.
How much longer until this is over?
Of course, that sort of question usually
brought back a pretty hard word.
Now, I can appreciate the “joy is in the
journey”… at least, I can appreciate it
more now than I did then. Even today,
I kind of like to know where we are going
when we take off. I have heard of people
who go to airports with bags packed and
just pick a flight at random - perhaps,
whatever is the best deal on tickets.
While, again, I can understand that
there is a thrill of adventure in this sort
of thing, that sounds like a good way to
get lost in Saskatchewan.
I’m sure Western Canada is lovely this
time of year, but I would rather know
where we are heading before we leave.
All that to say, as Mt. Pleasant heads into
the fall, I think I owe it to you to tell you
where I hope we are headed. I don’t
think that I can control how we grow
(pretty sure that’s God’s job), and I don’t
think that I am the last word in
leadership here (wehave a board of elders
and deacons), I do have some influence in
where we go. To whatever extent I am
driving, let me tell you where I hope we
go…
I hope we get louder at worship. I am
talking about y’all singing (and not
necessarily my guitar). I enjoy being in a
joyful, upbeat, energetic worship service
that celebrates God and inspires God’s
people. I think that draws people in, and
I think it reminds us Who is in charge.
I hope that MPCC becomes a place
where no one is alone (unless they
choose to be). Small groups, Sunday
School, and bible studies are part of it…
but the bigger end is that no one feels like
they’re in this Christianwalk alone. I am
convinced that, while I have a big part to
play, I cannot make enough connections
to get this done. I hope more people take
initiative to really get to know each other.
I pray that more people will undertake
ministries to our shut-ins, to the sick in
the hospitals, and to the people just
getting started here.
I hope we get more people serving in
our community. We are actively
supporting a food pantry, soup kitchen,
women’s shelter, drug/alcohol....

We are one of a smallhandful of churches that try and help people, insome small way, with their bills. I want MPCC tobe known for our service.I hope that our youth programs double. Ashleyand Chris Austin are recruiting to offer moreoptions for kids on Sundaymorning andWednesdaynight. I think we offer an innovative VBS and greatkids activities. I thinkWonderValleyCamp is doinggreat work, and I believe our youth ministry team isone of the best around. We have to get betterpromoting it!I hope we are a significantly larger church byEaster 2015. It’s not a numbers thing; it’s a soulsthing. It won’t be done by advertising or marketingor a building remodel. It will happen asmore peoplestart telling their friends, co-workers, family, andneighbors about what God is doing here. I believethat the church of God is the hope of the world.People are hungry to know the Lord. We get to bethe travel guides who point people to Him. You’rethe light of the world! Go shine!
