September 2014 ALUMNI-DRIVEN FUND RAISING GIVES BACK Southern York County School District Foundation Dollars for Scholars (DFS) distributed in excess of $125,000 to the Class of 2014 from more than 70 programs; 160 awards were made to 104 different students. Funding came from a variety of sources including grants, endowments, participation with community organizations, general fund drives, and annual directed gifts. But the pervasive and driving force behind the program’s success came from Warrior alumni. The eighth annual Susquehannock High School Celebrity Golf Tournament raised more than $13,900! The money will help fund 25 All Sports Booster Club scholarships and Susquehannock alumni programs including continued work on the Susquehannock alumni field house. The project was a joint effort of SHS athletic booster and alumni organizations. In addition, many of the 2014 student scholarship awards had direct links to alumni, were sponsored by alumni drives, or were in memory of deceased alumni funded by families, friends, and alumni. Andrea Hoover ’07 Has Number Retired at LVC The Number “5” is now a part of Lebanon Valley College history, proudly displayed in the rafters of the LVC arena following a half-time ceremony, honoring the career of SHS alum Andrea Hoover on February 15, 2014. Andrea was an All-American as a Dutchman and was recently named a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Century Team. She led her alma mater to its first Commonwealth Conference title in 2011 and then to a run deep into the NCAA tournament. She was a three-time first team All-CC selection, was conference player-of-the year twice, and remains as the school’s all-time assist leader, ending her career with 1,170 points. Andrea is currently an assistant women’s basketball coach at Lebanon Valley. Tournament winners left to right: Art Partner, Rick Kensigner, Jeff Nycum, and Jeff Sauve.

Southern York County School District Foundation Dollars for Scholars (DFS) distributed in excess of $125,000 to the Class of 2014 from more than 70 programs; 160 awards were made to 104 different students.

Alumni Spotlight – Kate Erin Gibson ‘96

For those who saw Kate Gibson ‘96 on a Susquehannock stage, there was no doubt that she would be connected to theatre in some way for life.

She had roles in SHS productions of Bye Bye Birdie, Music Man, Oklahoma, Will Rogers Follies, Arsenic and Old Lace, Antigone, and Fame, beginning with her freshman year and was a regular performer at York Little Theatre in the summer. Whenever she was on-stage, it was something very special.

Kate’s high school resume was that of a classic well-rounded student. She played clarinet in the marching and symphonic bands and sang with the chorus, excelling in these endeavors to the level of district festival honors. She lettered in soccer and ran cross country. She was also a consistent honor student.

But being on stage was what lit up her life. “Between shows at Susquehannock and summers at YLT, performing was my focus,” she says. “It was where I put most of my energy and passion.” It is no surprise, then, that Kate recalls her choir instructor Dave Nicholson as having a profound influence on her career. “Choir was where I developed my self-confidence,” she says. She also has strong memories of Carolyn Adams. “I had her for A.P. English, and she was scary and strict. She ran her class like a boot camp. But at the end of the day, she made you feel like a superstar.”

After graduation, she attended Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, majoring in music and theatre and graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 2000. She continued her studies at New York University, graduating in 2004 with a Master’s degree in Theatre Performance.

Kate then continued her training with the prestigious Barrow Group Theatre Company, expanding her impressive inventory of theatre skills to include: vocal, scat singing, acting, theory, piano, dialect, combat, film,

scenic design, directing, lighting, and dance styles ranging from ballet to tap to jazz.

Throughout her student career and after graduation, Kate performed in a number of off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway, and regional theatre productions. She also landed a National Tour in Four Score and Seven Years Ago. (Click here for Kate’s performing

resume.)

In addition to vocal and acting work, Kate expanded her interests to include directing and production and found a new passion. It was in 2006 that she founded The Red Door Theatre Company, a “floating” company (with no fixed

location), and assumed the role of artistic director and associate producer. Red Door has staged shows in New York City and Washington DC from that date with Kate serving in many roles – off-stage and on. The company puts on two or three shows per year. She describes this part of her life as “free-lance” and “entrepreneurial.”

She now sees her career moving toward production and management. In 2011, she accepted a post with the University of Maryland’s theatre program, a position she served for three years.

Most recently (2014), she accepted a position in New York University’s prestigious Tisch School for the Arts as Producing Supervisor.

She continues to perform when her schedule allows. Her most recent project was the one-woman show The Last Flapper, a play about Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. One of her current goals is to sing the National Anthem at every major league park, to date performing for the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Although Kate lives in New York City, she is a frequent visitor to her hometown of New Freedom where her family remains.

Thanks to Kate Gibson ’96 for making us Warrior Proud.

Get on the bus! We’re going to see Randy Edsall, ‘76

and the Maryland Terrapins

Saturday, October 18, 2014

Join the Susquehannock High School Alumni Association for a visit to College Park, MD to see Head Coach Randy Edsall, ’76, as the Maryland Terps match up with the Iowa Hawkeyes as the team debuts the year as part of the Big Ten Conference. The motor coach will leave Susquehannock High School at 8:00 a.m. and will return immediately following post-game tail gating. The cost is $80 per person, which includes transportation and game ticket.

Once again, we have been graciously invited to a pre-game and post-game tail gate party hosted by alumnus Larry Doll. There is no additional cost for the tail gate party. Larry is a SHS 1967 alumnus featured in our October 2011 Alumni Newsletter. His firm, Drexel Hamilton, was featured in the New York Times for their work with employing disabled veterans.

With a reputation as a top-notch builder, leader and recruiter, Randy Edsall is in his fourth season as the University of Maryland's head football coach. In 2013, with a 7-5 record, Edsall led the Terps to the Military Bowl against Marshall University’s Thundering Herd. This year, Edsall leads the Terps in the Big Ten, after the school spent 60 years in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Edsall, a Susquehannock High School alum, previously spent 12 seasons as head coach at the University of Connecticut, where he took the program from FCS (formerly Division I-AA) status to five bowl games, including a BCS contest. Edsall, who was hired in 2011 as the 34th head coach in Maryland history, guided the Huskies to a pair of Big East Conference titles (2007, 2010) and postseason appearances in each of his final four years, including the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. He was named the 2010 Big East Coach of the Year and previously had a successful run as an NFL assistant coach.

REGISTER NOW TO RESERVE YOUR SPACE! The trip is limited to the first 50 registrations received.
