Who

We

Are

Well, the time draws near… Mark Witman and I roll out

early on a Saturday morning this month. In some ways, it

is not that different from any other Saturday when I meet

Mark to spend some quality time on the back of the bike.

But this time, I carry the hopes of making a difference,

your prayers, and over $10,000 in gifts (to date) to change

lives. I am certain there will be times of struggle - muscles

tire, tires flatten, chains derail - but I trust that God will be

there!

As I go, I want to share five lessons on discipleship that I have been shaped

by during the time training for this ride.

Life is about balance. My bike touches the ground on two tires that are

less than one inch wide. I keep from falling by maintaining momentum

and balance. The life of faith is much the same, if you stop your

momentum in God’s sanctifying grace, you might fall over. I touch my

bike in just five spots - seat, pedals, and handle bars. I keep balance

through these contact points. My contact points with God are prayer,

worship, Bible study, fellowship, and service.

There are many paths to be ridden. And there are many types of bikes

and riders. Even Mark and I ride drastically different styles of bikes. The

life of faith takes many forms and many of the differences can be chalked

up to stylistic differences. While we are passionate about our experience

and history (watch a passionate debate between lycra-wearing road

cyclists and mountain-bikers some time), we must allow for the Spirit to

be at work in variety of ways. Many gifts, one Spirit. Many parts, one

Body.

I must maintain my equipment. A clean and cared for bike rides better

than one neglected. A clean and cared for body moves and feels better

than one neglected. A clean and cared for soul experiences the nudges

of the Divine better than one neglected.

I must get outside to understand my inside. The gospels remind us that

Jesus was drawn to deserted places (mountains, shores, and gardens) for

reflection and prayer. Riding has become both a physical discipline and a

spiritual one. It serves as a gauge for my mental and physical well-being.

I have found that I see our community and myself differently from the

bike - it is far more nuanced than when I am in my car trying to simply

get from point A to B. I know where the rough places are, where the

safe places are, where there are struggles, and where there is quiet.

Vision is a forward thinking enterprise. To descend a pass, like our Santa

Su, you have to commit to looking ahead. Looking around for a safe

place to bail leads to crashing. We cast our eyes down the road to see

the clear path for both our tires and our lives.

-Blessings, A

From a
