CHECK IT OUT! @ librarything.com/catalog/AnnArborCityClub Recent Acquisition: The Story of the Lost Child by Elena Ferrante This fourth and final installment in the The Neapolitan Novels series, which begins with My Brilliant Friend, gives validation to the New York Times Book Review’s opinion of its author, Elena Ferrante, as “one of the great novelists of our time.” set against the backdrop of a Naples that is as seductive as it is perilous and a world undergoing epochal change, the story of a lifelong friendship is told with unmatched honesty and brilliance. The four volumes in this series constitute a long remarkable story that readers will return to again and again, and every return will bring with it new revelations. (from The London Review Bookshop newsletter) AACityClubReads: The Door by Magda Szabó A discussion of The Door by Magda Szabó will be led by Lillian Back on Wednesday, October 7, at 3:00 p.m. If you read this second selection in our AACityClubReads program, or even if you don’t, please join us for tea and more. Reservations are required by October 5. Lillian Back, a former Senior Lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan and now a member of the City Club, would like to facilitate a discussion based on the novel, The Door, written in 1987 and recently translated into English by the prize winning Hungarian author Magda Szabó. We want to have a conversation that does consider exploring ideas that ask: who is it we make a place for in our lives? what does it mean to be a friend? And of course, the other side of the coin: once we invest love, sometimes unconditional love, what happens to our lives when we lose a love—how do we dance with those shadow-presences that haunt our lives? Although this novel is written by an author, with a writer at its center, it never lets us off the hook, always asking how it is we have gone about writing our own lives, how will we continue? What I’m Reading Now: Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf ; and, for the 6th time, Paradise Postponed by John Mortimer (the first in the trilogy that also includes Titmuss Regained, and The Sound of Trumpets.) All good! Come up and see me sometime, “Marian the Librarian”

Dancers as Diplomats

Clare Croft is a historian, theorist, and dramaturg, working at the intersection of dance studies and performance studies. She specializes in 20th and 21st century American dance, cultural policy, feminist and queer theory, and critical race theory. Her recently published book, Dancers as Diplomats: American Choreography in Cultural Exchange, chronicles the role of dance and dancers in American cultural diplomacy. Dr. Croft's approach to writing dance history emphasizes the role of dancers in performance, asking how history might look differently if dancers, audiences, and choreographers were seen as equal partners in the creation of meaning in dance. Her award-winning work has been published in academic journals, including Dance Chronicle, Dance Research Journal, and Theatre Journal, and she has been a regular contributor to The Washington Post and the Austin American Statesman. Copies of Dancers as Diplomats will be available for purchase and signing.

Poetry Club Facilitator: Kathleen Fitzgerald Day: 1st Thursday of the month Time: 5:30 p.m. The Poetry Club is a group of City Club members with varying interests and pursuits who have come together to enjoy reading and talking about poetry. We read and explore both contemporary and traditional poets. As we set our schedule, we hope to invite local poets to share their work with us. We also enjoy writing poetry

ourselves about different subjects−nature, places we have visited and people we have known. We take field trips to places on campus and in town that spur our imagination. Laughter and friendship and the love of the written word are what bring us together.
