and Wed from 7:30-9:30. The home tournament will be on September 25th and 26th. If you are able to run the score clock, or lines, please talk to Miss Sveinbjornson.

for all students grades

5—8. Our handbook is very informative. Listing of our staff, policies, and important dates are provided. Classroom teachers review the handbook with their home room students. I urge all parents to familiarize yourself with the handbook.

Welcome

back! In

the first week, every student will

be given a sheet outlining

evaluation, expectations, dates to

mark on your calendar as well as

some other information. Please ask

your child to show you this paper.

All students are required to wear a

particular uniform for

performances, and these are

outlined on that sheet. Some of

the bands use shirts that must be

purchase through the Band

Boosters. Please be checking if

your child’s shirt still fits from last

year, so we can get ordering new

ones soon. If you have access to

one from an older sibling, etc., feel

free to use that.

The Beginner band students will be

having a Headstart Clinic on

Saturday, September 12 from

10:00 – 2:30. This will take place at

Churchbridge Public School. A

detailed note was sent home on the

first day. Hopefully, all will be able

to attend. Also, if you have not

secured an instrument for your

child please make sure you are

doing this. The information was

presented at the meeting in June

(or sent home if you were unable to

attend). If you have questions,

please contact me.

Protocol

Parents, if you have any complaints, concerns, or suggestions, please follow this procedure:

1. Discuss the issue with the teacher concerned. Be as specific as possible about your concern.

2. If the problem persists, bring the matter to the attention of the Principal.

3. If you are not satisfied, take your concern to the Superintendent of Schools.

Energy Drinks Not Allowed

There are many “energy drink” products currently sold in Canada. They are available in corner stores, gas stations, and bars, usually displayed alongside soft drinks, juices, and sports drinks. Some of the brand names include: Red Bull Energy Drink, Impulse Energy Drink, Dark Dog, Shart Energy Drink, Hype Energy Drink, SoBe Adrenaline Rush, EAS Piranha Energy Drink, AMO Energy Drink, Red Rain, Red Dragon Energy Drink, Diablo Energy Drink, AJ Stinger. Any of these brands plus other energy drinks that are not listed here are not allowed at Langenburg High School.

We

Fundraisers due to the

downward trend in

players at Yorkton’s

PK Bingo and thus

revenues for LHS. We

have a final few

commitments in Sept/

We will be having a

junior choir again

this year for anyone in grades 5-7.

We rehearse at noon (usually on

Day 2) and at times after school as

well. We perform at various school

and community functions

throughout the school year, and

share our love of music and singing!

There is a sign-up sheet by Mrs.

Vosper’s room and a meeting will be

called next week.

Earth Club is an

extra-curricular

group that meets once a week at

noon to carry out environmental

initiatives such as recycling,

awareness, Terracycle/ upcycling,

and the Labels for Education

program. Interested students can

sign up by Mrs. Vosper’s classroom

and a meeting will be called next

week.

Student Services & Career Guidance – Mr. Kaminski I would like to welcome all students to Langenburg High School for the 2015-2016 school year. If you have any questions or concerns or if you need assistance in finding information about career choices or post-secondary education, please feel free to contact me at the school at 743-2631or by email at Sheldon.kaminski@gssd.ca. The Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship program will be continued this year at LHS. Currently, any student who enrolls in PAA will be automatically registered for this program. This program is for any student in Grades 10-12 who are considering a skilled trade as a career. It is designed to help students earn 300 apprenticeship hours prior to entering an apprenticeship program after leaving high school. Students must complete PAA 10, 20, 30 and a number of other tasks listed in the SYA course to be awarded their certificate. This will be done under the supervision of Mr. Hrywkiw. Please feel free to contact Mr. Kaminski or Mr. Hrywkiw if you have any questions about the program.

Any Grade 12 students who are interested in applying to Sask Polytechnic Institute (formerly SIAST technical colleges) should do so immediately. For most of the courses, students are selected on a first qualified-first selected basis, so I encourage all interested

The Langenburg High School staff is proud and excited to continue pursuing the goal of fostering and promoting a Sense of Belonging in all students. We believe all students are equal and that everyone must be treated respectfully and fairly to make them feel like they belong. The LHS staff, students, parents, and community all have a role to play in making our school environment even more accepting of individual differences. The staff of LHS looks forward to this challenge. We will be taking a reflective look in the mirror to analyze how we can promote and develop a Sense of Belonging in all of the children and young adults that attend LHS.

Students are encouraged to join our Student Voice Committee in order to positively impact their learning environment. It is our goal to continue the practice of giving students a voice in school matters in an effort to make Langenburg High School an even better school for all.

NOTE: A calendar has been set up and all grade 12 students have selected a time for their initial fall appointment. Priority is given to those students who may be thinking about attending SaskPolytech, but each student will have had their first meeting by the end of October. This initial meeting is to ensure that each student meets the requirements for graduation, has the necessary and required courses for his/her post-secondary choice(s), and to help with post- secondary applications and paper work.

Transcripts: Please note that students must apply for official transcripts for post-secondary applications through a new on-line process. There is no longer a paper application. The information is listed below.

Online Request for High School Transcripts Effective January 29, 2014, requests for High School Transcripts will be accepted through a secure web application process at https://www.k12.gov.sk.ca/etranscript/. Payment for transcript requests may be made online using VISA and MasterCard.

Note: Students must request official transcripts be sent to their post-secondary institution in order to be officially accepted in to the program of their choice.

DISTANCE LEARNING: Good Spirit School Division offers students the opportunity to receive credit for a select number of courses that may not be offered at a student’s home school. As well, other school divisions within the province offer these and other courses. These distance learning courses are completed by the student on their own time and essentially take the place of the old

correspondence course program. There is a fee to enroll in the course, but it is refundable to the student upon successful completion of the course.

Any students in Grade 10-12 who are interested in registering for distance learning courses with the GSSD or with other divisions within the province please see Mr. Kaminski or Mr. Kinney to assist you in registering for the course or courses of your choice. For more information on distance learning courses you can check out the GSSD website at www.gssd.ca.

Students interested in taking part in the “Experience US” Open House at the University of Saskatchewan on October 2nd , 2015 should register as soon as registration opens shortly. Some sessions fill up very quickly, so you may not get the session of your choice. This open house is a great opportunity to ask questions, tour the campus, and get a glimpse of university life. Please note that this is not a school activity, so students are expected to attend with their parents or on their own. As well, there are some informative sessions that are designed just for parents. For a small fee parents can attend a number of sessions. Please check the University of Saskatchewan website for more details. http://explore.usask.ca/tours_and_events/openhouse.php

Students interested in taking part in the University of Regina Open House at the University of Regina should note that the date for this open house is October 17, 2015. Once again, this open house is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn about the campus and get a glimpse of university life. Please note that this is not a school activity, so students are expected to attend with their parents or on their own. Please check the University of Regina website for more details. www.uregina.ca and then click on the “Future Students” link.

Students interested in attending

the CSI – Come. See. Investigate Tour at Saskatchewan Polytechnic open houses should check out the following website for information and pre-registration: http://www.saskpolytech.ca. Visit CSI SaskPolytech and search under “visit a campus” and then register under “my path”. These tours provide potential students with an opportunity to explore the programs and services at each of the SIAST campuses. CSI SaskPolytech is available to interested students in Grades 11 and 12. The Fall 2013 dates for CSI SIAST are TBA for each of the following campuses: Kelsey(Saskatoon), Wascana(Regina), Palliser(Moose Jaw), and Woodland(Prince Albert). Please note that this is not a school activity, so students are expected to attend with their parents or on their own.

V an User Fee

There will be a “User

Pay” Gas Supplement Fee for sports teams or student activity groups that use the school van. The following criteria will be in place for the various forms of student excursions.

Curricular or Mandatory Extra-Curricular: Students will not be charged a fee for a class or sporting activity that requires mandatory student participation. These activities need Division approval. When approval is given the Division covers the mileage. These types of classroom trips are usually quite rare, but do include the mandatory participation in District, Regional, and Provincial events.

Co-Curricular: Students will be charged a Gas Supplement Fee of $5 per student for these out of town excursions. Most field trips would be classified in this category as “extensions of class room learning.” A collection of $5 per students is the current practice; therefore, this is not a new fee, but is a simple reminder of our current policy.

Extra-Curricular: Due to the fact that most extra-curricular players already pay a team fee, the trips made by teams will be based on the length of the trip and is outlined by the following payment schedule: Return trips that are 200 km or less, which includes Yorkton and Melville for example, will be charged a $5 Gas Supplement Fee per student. Return trips that are greater than 200 km return will be charged a $10 Gas Supplement Fee per students. Any in-town excursions are exempt from the fee.

S tudent Accident Insurance: All students

are covered during any school-sponsored activity. Parents may, if they wish, purchase 24-hour coverage. All claim forms, etc can be found on the brochure handed out the first day of school or visit our website at www.gssd.ca/school/lhs/Pages/default.aspx and click on the www.kidsplusca link.

Student Transportation – Driver Information Forms (reminder and clarification)

The Good Spirit School Division Driver Information form is sent home with every student at the beginning of each school year or is given

to them upon mid-year enrollment to Langenburg High School. By G.S.S.D. policy, every driver must complete this form and submit it to their school prior to transporting and G.S.S.D. student (other than their own child, of course). This is school division policy. Student safety and staff/school division liability are the rationale for this requirement. Therefore, your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

In addition, an S.G.I. Driver’s Abstract is not necessary unless you plan to take the training and be approved to transport students in a 15 passenger van. A final reminder is that the driver information form is only valid for the current school year; therefore, G.S.S.D. requires that drivers fill out this form each school year. If you have any questions, please feel free to give the Langenburg High School administration office or the Good Sprit School Division Transportation Manager a call for further clarification.

E lectronic Devise Usage Policy Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to

communicate the framework for appropriate student use of electronic devices during the school day.

Acceptable Use: Grade 8 to 1 2 students may use their electronic devices (cellphones, IPads, IPods, etc.) for personal and educational purposes during their “spare” and/or non-classroom time (noon hour, 5-minute breaks, grade 11 and 12 class spares, prior to the 8:45 a.m. bell and after the 3:27 p.m. bell). In addition, grade 8 to 12 students are also encouraged to bring their “smart” electronic devices to class so that these devices, upon approval of the classroom teacher, can be used for educational purposes. These electronic devices, for example smartphones, must be on silent mode during class so that they do not cause unnecessary distractions. During the school day our Parkside students, grades 5 to 7, are only allowed to use these electronic devices with their teacher’s or their staff supervisor’s approval. At all grade levels, the camera and video recording functions on any electronic device can only be used with the approval of the classroom teacher or administration. The use of the camera or video functions on these electronic devices during special events such as Christmas dinner, school assemblies or pep rallies, field trips, extra-curricular events, etc., must again be approved by the activity supervisor or school administration.

Inappropriate Use: Students are not allowed to use these electronic devices during class time for personal/social purposes. However, since both staff and students are encouraged to incorporate

technology into classroom teaching and learning, these devices may be used during class time upon the approval of the classroom teacher, in other words, these electronic devices should only be used during class if a direct connection has been made to the educational curriculum and/or another purpose or activity that enhances student learning. Any unauthorized “posting” of photos, video, comments, etc. on any

social media site is strictly prohibited unless all parties included in the post have given their full

permission. All publicly shared media forms with any

connection to activities of Langenburg High School must be “school-appropriate”. The school’s administration will have the final decision on whether an item is appropriate and whether disciplinary consequences are necessary.

Consequences for Inappropriate Use: Students that inappropriately use electronic devices during any part of the school day (to cheat, to bully, to distract, to photograph/video, and/or to use in any other manner deemed inappropriate by the administration of Langenburg High School ) will be subject to disciplinary action as follows:

1st infraction: The electronic device will be confiscated and held in the office until the end of the school day. The staff member will make a phone call home to inform parents/guardians of the incident and the possibility of an in-school suspension if a future incident occurs.

2nd infraction: Student will serve a full day in-school suspension. The electronic device will be held by the office during the school day. The administration will contact parent/guardians.

3rd infraction: Student will serve a 2 day in-school suspension. The electronic device will be held by the office during the two school days. The administration will contact parent/guardians.

Any further inappropriate use of an electronic device after the 3rd infraction will result in a parent/administration meeting to discuss a plan to help improve the defiance issue and outline any future remediation efforts. In any case of severe inappropriateness or harassment, the school administration may decide to implement out of school suspensions and additional disciplinary consequences. This policy has been developed in conjunction with the Langenburg High School Community Council and Langenburg Student Voice Committee.
