Dear Friends, Summer is in full swing and the whisper of autumn is beginning to present itself. The sight of red and yel-low leaves are a startling reminder that change is in the air and around St. John’s we are experiencing the excitement of preparations for the coming program year.

As I write this, Gordon Ross is in the final countdown for the Peach Festival on August 22nd. Thank you Gordon and the many volunteers who have helped make this happen.

Our final 9am service of the summer will take place on August 30th and the 8am and 10am service sched-ule will resume on September 6th. The Blessing of the Backpacks (and Teacher Grade & Plan books, etc.) will take place on September 6th at the 10am Eucharist. Please plan to join us and to prayerfully equip our students and educators to begin the new school year.

Linda Snyder is preparing the Godly Play classroom and recruiting volunteers to be present with our young members. Homecoming Sunday plans are under way for September 13th and the kick off of our church school year. Weather permitting we will have a special celebration in the memorial garden!

Our Party in the Park volunteers are working feverishly to finalize plans for this time of celebration and fun. This is the major fundraiser of our year and we need everyone to participate. Please plan to join us at Brodie Park on October 3rd!

Laura and Bruce Wearne are busy coordinating our outreach and mission activities this summer. Thank you to all those who participated in the 1st Lunch in the Park in Winsted this summer. Please be sure to check out the pictures in this newsletter and watch for news about upcoming events, including our Open Door Soup Kitchen efforts scheduled for September 19th and our next dinners at Peter’s Retreat on August 22nd and September 26th.

Rhythms of Grace, our ministry with families of children with special needs, will resume on October 4th at 1pm. Please help us get the word out about this education and worship program planned especially for children who would have difficulty attending a traditional worship service.

Coming soon, St. John’s will be expanding our commitment to intercessory prayer. Watch your email for news of the new ePrayer List and be sure that the office has your most recent email address.

Being committed to participating in God’s Mission in the world is an undertaking that we take seriously at St. John’s. Please join me in thanking our parish leadership for their continued commitment to leadership in this endeavor. The next time you see Michelle Piekos, Halyna Petronchak, or Linda Snyder thank them for their service. The next time you see our wardens and the members of our vestry, Gordon Ross, Gray Horn, Larry Espinet, Anne Hall, Donna Colavecchio, Candy Flaherty, John Gargiulo, Jill Healey, Bruce Wearne, and Laura Wearne, be sure to ask them how you can be part of all that is happening at St. John’s! The total year to date is $170.27. Bring coins any-time. We will keep them safe.

SCRIP – A way to help Saint John’s and simplify your life! The Scrip Program is a simple way for Saint John’s to benefit from your regular purchases at select retailers at no cost to you. Here is how it works: If you purchase a scrip card (gift card) here at Saint John’s in the amount of $50. You receive a gift card for $50 for that store and our parish re-ceives a percentage of your card purchase. The gift card is the full value of your purchase and we re-ceive a donation from the retailer. It is that simple. Stop & Shop cards are available on Sundays for pur-chase and a listing of many other retailers is also available. Easter gifts, birthday presents and every-day expenses can all benefit Saint John’s and you can save a trip to the store!

Special thanks to Ron Caine, Tom Chappell, Bruce Wearne, Bob Osborne and Rick Smith for cleaning the church.

Thanks to our Soup Kitchen Crew for their hard work.

Special thanks to Mac Wilson and his grandson Jake for taking care of the lawn maintenance.

Thanks to Norma Pappalardo and volunteers who have made summer at St. John’s especially beautiful with all the flowers in the garden, planters and front of the church.

Special thanks to Laura Wearne, and all the volunteers, Bruce Wearne, Tom Chappell, Brian Jones, Norma Pappalardo, Betty Castonguay, Barbara Henri, Lucie Martocchio, Winnie Pratt, Nancy Gibson, Nancy Butler, Candy Flaherty and Michelle Piekos, for all their hard work to pre-pare for Lunches In the Park In Winsted for the needy.

Thanks to everyone who helps with the mission and ministry of St. John’s.

Rhythms of Grace Worship for Families and

Individuals with special needs

Our monthly worship will again begin on Sunday Oct. 4th at 1:00PM. We are looking for worship leaders AND participants. All people are welcome to join us in the service. Rhythms begins with a gathering activi-ty then on to storytelling and response activities. We re-gather and process upstairs to gather around the ta-ble for Eucharist and receive a blessing and then dis-missal. Worship is around an hour. If you would like to learn more about this experience speak with Linda Snyder, visit the website: www.rhythms-of-grace.org If you may know of someone who might be interested in joining us please take a brochure in the back of the church or give them our contact information above.

Once again it is time to plan for this ministry. We take the fourth Saturday in all months, except No-vember and December, because of Thanksgiving and Christmas. The date of the next meal is August 22 which will be hosted by Mother Cosman. Spe-cials thanks to Anne Radziewicz and Betty Castonguay for hosting the June meal and Lucie & Lou Martocchio and Barbara Hinman for hosting the July meal. Please contact Laura Wearne with a date that you would like to volunteer for Peter’s Retreat. She can be reached at (860)307-3031.

This is an important part of our ministry of hospi-tality—to visitors, to children, to one another. Cof-fee supplies other than cream are available in the kitchen. Baked goods are terrific, whether home baked or purchased—whatever works for you.

A sign up sheet will be posted in the parish hall as we start our Fall services. All parishioners who attend the 10 a.m. service are requested to host at least once this fall/winter.

Save the Date: Godly Play registration and first classes— Sunday, Sept. 13th! Children and Family Ministries http://reddoorschildren.weebly.com

We are busy this summer creating a number of the next level Godly Play stories to be presented throughout the coming year. So far for this fall we have added “The Falling Apart”-the story of Adam and Eve and “The Re-luctant Prophet” the story of Jonah to our fall storytelling. To see a complete list of this fall’s lessons check out the calendar on the children and families website above. Upper Godly Play Class: Our class for 5th through 8th grade is expanded for Sept. to include ALL youth. This class will meet every Sunday in Sept. to design our St. Francis Day 10:00AM service which will include a Blessing of Animals. We will be leading this worship and creating special prayers for the day. Two storytellers and two doorkeepers are needed to complete our leader’s circle in the fall. If you might be interested in joining us please speak with Linda Snyder, Candy Flaherty, Lucie Martocchio or call the office. The calendar schedule is sent out to leaders by season to sign up for dates that they would be available to par-ticipate. We hope to have enough leaders to rotate on a 6 week schedule.
