WELCOME OUR NEWEST MEMBER!Bob Roberts of Hopkinsville, Kentucky

Ancestor: Capt. Stephen Ashby - Virginia Continental Line$ Bob is a tool setter / operator for a manufacturing company in Hopkinsville. He attended our Memorial Day event at the Cadiz Park in May and decided that he wanted to become a member of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter. Having done most of his own research, his application was a “breeze” to put together. Unfortunately, he currently working most Saturdays, but hopes to be able to participate in future events.$ He was officially approved for membership on Wednesday, August 26.$ Bob is descended from Capt. Stephen Ashby of the Virginia Continental Line. Born in 1710 in Prince William County, Virginia, the Captain served early in the war and retired on September 14, 1778, at the age of 68! His retirement made room for younger officers to serve after the Virginia regiments were consolidated.

$ Capt. Stephen Ashby received a land grant of 1,000 acres in 1784 for his service in the 8th and 12th Virginia Regiments. He settled in the frontier of Christian County, Kentucky and claimed his land. $ The Patriot died in 1797 and was laid to rest in the Old Ashby Farm Cemetery near Hanson in modern-day Hopkins County. Many of his descendants still reside in the area today.$ The DAR chapter in Madisonville, Hopkins County, is named in his honor. His grave was marked by the SAR in 2010.

TRIGG COUNTY SCHOOLS “GALA OF TABLES”AUGUST 5, 2015

$ The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter recently took part in the annual celebration of the “Gala of Tables.” This event is the official “kick-off” of the school year for local teachers and staff. At the “Gala of Tables,” local churches, businesses, civic groups, and individuals sponsor and thematically decorate tables in the cafeteria and host teachers and staff for a breakfast. The groups also provide small gifts for the staff people seated at random at their tables.$ For the second year, the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter hosted a table, beautifully designed and decorated by Debbie Mallory, wife of chapter Vice-President Steve Mallory. Compatriots Geoff Baggett and Dr. Dennis Adams hosted, in uniform, and presented their guests with mini-haversacks full of snacks and goodies, along with a Sonic gift card.

The SAR table included a copy of the Declaration of Independence, beeswax candles and brass holders, real wood utensils, and an edible “apple tree” centerpiece.

Debbie Mallory also designed and sewed the beautiful ticking-lined haversacks, complete with a genuine hand-made deer antler button (courtesy of chapter VP Steve mallory).

The ladies of the Colonial Dames hosted a tea in honor of the 100th anniversary of the founding of their organization.$ In addition to presenting the colors, chapter President Geoff Baggett offered the invocation and brought some brief opening remarks about some of his Colonial ancestors.

BATTLE OF BLUE LICKS MEMORIAL SERVICEAUGUST 17, 2015

Four Compatriots from the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter took part in the annual Central District commemoration of the Battle of Blue Licks in Eastern Kentucky.  The event honors the seventy-seven Kentuckians who died at the hands of over 300 Shawnee warriors under the command of the British on August 19, 1782.  The commemoration ceremony is held each year at the granite monument honoring the men of Blue Licks near the site of their mass grave.

Eddie Price delivered the keynote address during the ceremony and presented the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter wreath. Steve Mallory, Ron Drennan, and Geoff Baggett all fired their weapons in the gun salute.

In addition to receiving credit toward the SAR Silver Color Guard Medal for participation in a National Color Guard event, all four of these men also received credit for five marked graves (due to the site being a mass grave of Patriot soldiers) toward the Patriot Grave Marking Medal.
