The Minister writes:

For many people September is a time of change and new beginnings. It certainly is for families with children; each one starting a new class, school or college. It can be difficult for our children who leave a familiar environment and move into the unknown. What will the new teacher be like? Will I make any friends? As parents we accept and welcome these changes as being helpful and beneficial. As adults we often resist change but part of the work of the Holy Spirit is to stir in us a holy discontent. Not one that will lead to grumbling, but to growth.

In the Bible there are many stories of people whose lives are changed by an encounter with God. Zacchaeus was a tax collector who took more than he should to make himself rich. He ended up with plenty of money but no friends. Jesus spotted him hiding in a tree and invited himself to tea. This meeting with Jesus changed Zacchaeus’s life. He gave back to people all that he had swindled four times over. He had changed from being selfish to being selfless. It must have made quite an impact on the community and made Jesus even more of a hero.

We may not be able to sit down with Jesus over a cup of tea, but an important part of prayer and reading the Bible is asking God to speak to us. It is nice to receive assurances of God’s love and comfort. It can be a more life changing to be challenged about how we are in way that leads to change and ultimately a richer and fuller life. How selfish are we in our attitude to money, to the poor, to our neighbour, to those who hurt us?

Migrants are a big part of the news at the moment. It is hard to imagine what horrors drive people to risk death and exploitation. It is a difficult problem that needs a global response. We must remember that these are human beings like us, only born in a different place. Our response must be to care for those seeking escape as well as seeking to deal with the causes that drive people to such extremes.

Summer Concert Review

Thank you to everyone who supported the Stanley Community Singers’ Summer Concert on Sunday 12th July at St Peter’s Church. It was an excellent event and everyone seemed to enjoy them-selves very much. The Singers performed a number of well-known songs including ‘Danny Boy’, ‘You raise me up’, ‘Make you feel my love’, and songs from musicals such as ‘Joseph’, ‘Lion King’ and

‘Aladdin’. Also appearing in the concert were some junior singers, musicians and dancers.

The concert raised £132.50 for the charity Mary’s Meals which provides over 1 million African school children with a daily meal. Thank you to everyone who gave so generously.

The Stanley Community Singers meet every Monday afternoon in term time at St Peter’s Church on Lake Lock Road from 1pm-2.30pm with singing from 1pm-2pm with time afterwards for refreshments and chat. Come and join us! - no previous experience required, just a love of singing. We sing a variety of different music including pop, musicals, spirituals and modern classics. Come along, make some new friends and enjoy a good sing-song!

New chairs! The St Peter’s church PCC has ordered new chairs for the church which will be delivered sometime this month. All users of the church building have for many years benefitted from the use of wooden framed chairs which originally came from the old prison officers’ college. However, the old chairs are now rather tatty, are very heavy, and do not stack. The new chairs will be cushioned and comfy, but with aluminium frames making them much lighter. They will also be stackable, making for more flexible use of the church building.

‘Hope Springs’ (2013) 12 Rating

Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) are a devoted couple, but decades of marriage have left Kay wanting to reconnect with her husband. When she hears of a renowned couple’s specialist (Steve Carell) in the small town of Great Hope Springs, she attempts to persuade her sceptical husband, a steadfast man of routine, to get on a plane for a week of marriage therapy. Just convincing the stubborn Arnold to go on the retreat is hard enough; but the real challenge comes as they try to re-ignite the spark that caused them to fall for each other in the first place. With a highly intelligent script, and excellent performances by Streep and Jones, this is a surprising, understated and touching film.

Report from St Peter’s CofE Primary & Nursery School Lake Lock Road, Stanley, Wakefield, WF3 4HS

Tel: 01924 303175, Headteacher: Mr Paul Fenton

We welcome back all our children, families and staff to the start of a new and exciting school year.

Our summer term finished with lots of very memorable events. We took 44 children on a two-day trip to London, where they visited the theatre, a museum and the London Eye. Also, our Year 3 and 4 children travelled to Home Farm at Tatton Park, Cheshire, where they pretended to be war evacuees, working on the farm, feeding the goats and hens, and experiencing an air raid drill. Meanwhile, the Key Stage 1 children went to Filey, where they walked along the seafront, played games in the sand and ate their ice-creams. We now look forward to the start of another eventful year.

Murder most popular

With St Peter’s ‘Murder Mystery Evening’ coming up on Friday 25th September (see page 12), it seems appropriate to think about Agatha Christie, who was born 125 years ago this month. It seems curious that a woman who spent years thinking up ingenious ways to kill people should be so loved by us, even so long after her birth.

Yet Agatha Christie’s crime/mystery stories made her the best-selling writer of all time. Born into a wealthy middle-class family in Devon on 15th September, 1890, Agatha Christie’s first published novel in 1920 introduced Hercule Poirot to the world. Soon Miss Marple joined him, and the rest is history. Christie’s 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections have sold two billion copies, just behind the Bible and Shakespeare. Her play, the ‘Mousetrap’, is was the world’s longest-running play.

Why does murder and detection appeal to so many millions of us at the end of a busy day, as we slump over our meal in front of the TV? Perhaps it is our anticipation that no matter how bad things are, that in the end, evil will not beat goodness, but instead truth will triumph. Sounds like an echo of the Christian message.

‘Patriotism is not enough’—a tribute to Edith Cavell By Canon David Winter

In September 1915, at the height of the battles in Belgium and Flanders, a British nurse working in a Belgian hospital was arrested by the Germans and charged with treason.

Edith Cavell had resided and worked in Belgium for seven years after training at the London Hospital in Whitechapel (now the ‘Royal London’) and working in several hospitals in England. Now, as the brutal conflict raged around her and the German army occupied most of Belgium, she determined to do all she could to save the lives of those caught up in the fighting, whatever their nationality.

She provided shelter and medical care for Germans, Belgians, French and British troops. In the latter two cases she also – and this was the core of her offence – assisted them in escaping from areas occupied by the German forces and making their way back to their homelands.

Her motivation for this was entirely Christian. The daughter of a vicar, she had enthusiastically embraced the faith for herself, and now saw that the time had come to put the principles of the gospel to practical effect. Her own home became

a secret staging post for escapees, but she did this not to ‘take sides’ but out of concern for the young men involved. She took a high view of her vocation as a nurse, seeing it as a calling that transcended racial and national barriers. For her, healing and rescue were simply part of the calling to be a good neighbour.

Those arguments didn’t, of course, carry much weight with the German occupying power. As a Belgian resident, she was charged with treason, an offence which carried a death penalty. Her trial was widely reported, and there were many diplomatic moves made on her behalf, especially by the Americans (then neutrals in the conflict), but they fell on deaf ears.

She was found guilty and sentenced to death. On 12th October 1915, at the age of 49, she was executed by a firing squad, to world-wide condemnation. Nor was Edith Cavell’s death to be forgotten.

Cartoon Corner

Shirley reminded them they were going there to praise the Lord, not

to ‘lay down some rad tunes’

After the war her body was brought back to Britain and a service of commemoration held in Westminster Abbey. Her body was reburied in the grounds of Norwich cathedral, near the village of her birth.

A statue which stands in St Martin’s Place, Trafalgar Square, London commemorates the life of this woman who gave herself totally to her calling – a pioneer of modern nursing methods as well as an heroic war-time figure. The statue records her most famous saying, words which capture the heart of her commitment: ‘Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone.’

* Edith Cavell is commemorated in the Anglican Church Calendar on December 12th.

Prayers for September

The reality of Jesus Overwhelmed by the reality of Jesus life changes, begins afresh in an altogether different dimension.

Overwhelmed by the reality of Jesus there is purpose and energy and a calling to leave the comfortable known-space to go in joy and brave obedience wherever He sends.

Overwhelmed by the risen and real and living Lord Jesus, everything is possible in our “Yes!” by Daphne Kitching

September Prayer Loving Father, please help us with all the new things September brings: a new school year, new stages of life, with children moving on or out, new challenges for many as summer gives way to autumn. Help us in this season of change to know the constant reality of Jesus. Thank you for the new life He freely offers to all who turn to Him. In Jesus’ name, Amen. By Daphne Kitching

There may be a job You say there’s a job You ought to be doing But never make time for - So you don’t get it done.

You ask my advice? And this I say to you, Just do it for Jesus In faith, soldier on.

Say thank you to God For the gifts that God gave you

Then take His near presence, Through the job, To someone. By Sam Doubtfire
