Our next meeting will be on Tues. Sept. 8th @ 7:00pm

In Christ,

President Ladies Guild

Ladies Guild September 2015The Power of Words

Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say onlywhat helps, each word a gift. Ephesians 4:29

Lord, make us mindful of our words. Make us a powerful source of encouragementto those in need, and let our words and deeds be worthy of Your Son, theOne who gives us courage and strength for this day and for all eternity. Amen

The words that we speak have the power to do great good or great harm. If we speakwords of encouragement and hope, we can lift others up. And that’s exactly whatGod commands us to do! Sometimes, when we feel uplifted and secure, it is easy tospeak kind words. Otgher times, when we are discouraged or tired, we can scarcelysummon the energy to uplift ourselves, much less anyone else. God intends that wespeak words of kindness, wisdom, and truth, no matter our circumstances, no matterour emotions. when we do, we share a priceless gift with the world, and we giveglory to the One who gave His life for us. As believers, we must do no less.

Whatto

Pack:Luis received a shoebox in Panama at age 6.The stuffed lamb in my shoebox was the first toy Iever received. I still have it. It was really a treasure. It played a little song and was so beautiful. It was so tender, so soft. The little face ofthe lamb was something I loved. I used to pretend I was playing with a real lamb. AfterI finished playing with it, I always put it back inside my plastic shoebox. The lambmade me smile every time I saw it because I would remember the day people gave methe shoebox. The most valuable items in my shoebox were school supplies: crayons, a pencilsharpener, pens, pencils, and notebooks. In Panama in 1996, if you didn’t havesupplies, you could not go to school. That year I was able to use the pens, the pencils, the notebooks—everything. The day before I received my shoebox I was begging my mom to buy supplies so Icould go to school. She said, “I can’t. I don’t have the money but if you want you canpray.”We never went to church. We never talked about God, but that day she told me to pray.I asked her to teach me how. She said, “You can talk to God like He’s right in frontof you, but you have to respect Him because He is the Lord.”“Inside the shoebox was a letter that said, ‘Jesus loves you and I love you, too.’”So I knelt and I talked to Him like He was in front of me. I asked specifically forschool supplies and the next day I was invited to a church for a special event. That’swhere I got my shoebox.Inside the shoebox was a letter that said, “Jesus loves you and I love you, too.” Thatmessage broke my heart immediately. All that I needed was to know that I’m loved. So to receive that letter allowed me to see the spiritual message behind the box.We were nonbelievers and the shoebox helped us understand that God answers prayers. My mom said, “Now I know that God is real.” Because someone took a moment towrite down “Jesus loves you and I do too,” it allowed me to see that even though Ididn’t have a father and even though I don’t have a perfect life, He’s there for me. Ilived in the ghetto. We didn’t have anything. I was hopeless. The shoebox allowed meto understand that God cared for me.My mother and my little sister became Christians right after I received my shoebox, but I didn’t understand that I needed to follow Christ. Still the letter in the shoebox wasalways telling me, “He loves you. He’s there for you. He’s waiting for you.” Therewere people telling me all the time that God had a better plan for my life. At 14, Irealized that I needed Him and accepted Jesus as my Savior. The shoebox was the first seed that was planted in my life. Today I don’t have thepencils but I have something that is more important because the Bible says, “the wordof the Lord remains forever” (1 Peter 1:25, ESV). I just needed to know that He lovedme, so the shoebox was a beautiful gift.

DEADLINE FOR FILLED SHOEBOXESSUNDAY, NOVEMBER 15th

Page 8: SEPTEMBER 2015 RLC NEWSLETTERrlcflushing.homestead.com/Newsletter/2015/... · born on March 25, 2015 infant daughter of Chirah Brown and Troy Dookram was baptized on Sunday, July

On the first day, God created the dog and said, “Sit all day by the door of yourhouse and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you alife span of twenty years.”

The dog said, “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years andI’ll give you back the other ten?”

So God agreed……

On the second day, God created the monkey and said, “Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-year life span.”

The monkey said, “Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty long time toperform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?”

And God agreed……

On the third day, God created the cow and said, “You must go into the field withthe farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk tosupport the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.”

The cow said, “That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?”

And God agreed again…… On the fourth day, God created humans and said,“Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.”

But the human said, “Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the doggave back; that makes eighty, okay?”

“Okay,” said God. “You asked for it.”

So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the nextten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last tenyears, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you.

Pastor Explains The Meaning Of Life To His Congregation

The Church is a messy place by nature. That’s what happens when a bunch ofsinners come together anywhere. But it is a messy place designed by God to beHis face to the World, and all those sinners reflect Him in unique ways.

Nothing reflects God to the world like the Church does. No, we don’t “do”church 100 percent correctly and we never will. No, church is not a perfect place.Yes, church displays the sins of all its people very publicly. But none of thatchanges what it is or can be.

To leave the Church is to hurt yourself and to hurt others. I don’t mean like aslap in the face (though in some cases it’s a bit like that). I mean hurt likemalnourishment.

We are created by God to connect with others and, in that connection, revealmore of Him to each other and to the world. When we depart we deprive our-selves of those aspects of God others reflect and we deprive them of those aspectswe reflect. Leaving is starving our souls and others’.

Solitude is wonderful. But many things in life, maybe most things, are betterenjoyed with others, including God. That’s why we’re called to worship withothers to study with others, to pray with others. And church is the outlet for that,an imperfect outlet, but the outlet nonetheless.

We were created by God to connect with others and, in that connection, revealmore of Him to each other and to the world.

God wants us to experience Him to the fullest and that is done with others in song,in study, in reflection, in prayer, in tears, in confession, in celebration---withothers, doing church.

It’s inevitable that we will leave particular churches at different points in our life, but leaving the Church altogether is escapism. You may find some stressesrelieved and conflicts avoided. Often, I often want to slap the stupid out of thechurch. It can be such a maddening collection of people. (And I suspect Icontribute to the stupid that needs slapping just as often.) But none of thatchanges what it is: the organism of God’s presence and Kingdom in the world. Itis His means of connecting people to the Gospel, to hope, to life.

No matter your frustrations and hurts, it cannot be abandoned. You need it nowwhether you know it or not, and someday you will have a need nothing and oneone else can meet. And the Church will be where Jesus shows Himself to you.

(from an article by Barnabas Piper)
