Bienvenue à nos familles qui rentrent et nos nouveaux élèves et leurs familles.

On behalf of Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School community, we would like to

welcome to our returning students and their families, as well as, our newest

students and their families. I hope that everyone’s summer has been a joyful and

relaxing one filled with fond memories.

The Our Lady of Wisdom School community can rejoice as the gravitas of

now complete with a new kindergarten play space, brand new addition, housing 3 new

JK/SK classrooms, washrooms and corridor, nutrition program room, and a new

learning commons, special education room, staffroom and elevator in the existing

portion of the school. In addition, I am pleased to announce that our portables have

been relocated, with all classes now in the main building, freeing up additional play

space on newly paved and re-sodded ground. Furthermore, we are excited to receive

our Chromebooks and experience the roll-out of Google Apps For Education (GAFE).

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce and welcome several new staff

members to the Our Lady of Wisdom community:

CES)

Ms. Kathleen Straub DECE (Designated Early Childhood Educator)

Ms. Haydee Liu on leave for one year (Replacement T.B.A.) (Half-time Librarian

It is indeed a sad yet celebratory occasion that we say farewell to a retiring

teacher, Mme. S. Habbaky, who has shown so much dedication and love for the

teaching profession within the Toronto Catholic system and the students who have

had the experience of learning alongside her. Truly, we wish her well in all her

future endeavours.

We look forward to what will no doubt be a busy and rewarding academic

year, the year of the “Family” in what is TCDSB’s new pastoral plan for

2015-2018, grounded in the importance of working together with families,

the parish and our school to further strengthen the bonds of Catholic

Education and galvanize its future growth.

the front office.

these numbers change please let the school know

promptly, IN WRITING.

LUNCH ROUTINES

Students who remain at school for lunch (11:45-12:45)

through the front doors by using the video monitoring

system and sign in at the main office. Entrance through the

school yard doors or other entrances and exits, i.e. the

Kindergarten wing is strictly PROHIBITED. In the interest of

safety for all students and to ensure that classes are

uninterrupted, we need everyone's total co-operation and

understanding on this matter. If an item is being dropped off

for your child or pick up is required for an appointment, please

come by the office. We will contact the class directly.

If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, the vice-

principal or principal, kindly call and make an appointment. We

are glad to meet with you at a mutually convenient time.

School has adopted a BLUE AND WHITE DRESS CODE.

DROPPING OFF & PICKING UP STUDENTS

off your children in the appropriate sections of the school yard

and leave them with our staff. This will help the students

develop routines and it will also help our staff ensure a safe

school yard.

dropped off no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Parents should be

aware that the supervision of the children remains their

responsibility before and after school. Kindly note: There is

TRAFFIC PROTOCOL

To start off the school year with all students’ safety at the

forefront, we need to ask for your increased vigilance with all

of our surrounding roads. We ask for your additional

attention to the safety of our students, specifically in the

areas in front of our school. We need everyone’s help to work

for the safety of all our children.

We have an ongoing concern with traffic congestion in front

of the school during student drop-off and pick-up

times. The disorderly flow of traffic jeopardizes the safety

of students and all pedestrians.

PLEASE HELP US HELP OUR CHILDREN:

1. During morning and afternoon peak times, follow the

directions on the map illustrated on the reverse for

approaching and leaving the school area;

Use White Abbey Park to approach Japonica Rd.

Use Crosland Drive to leave the area.

Use the loop/cul-de-sac on White Abbey Park and wait in

any of the spots where parking is allowed (maximum 30

minutes). Use these roads only in the direction indicated on

the map.

2. The area in front of the main door of the school cannot

be used as a drop-off OR a pick-up area. It is a school bus

loading zone!

3. The staff parking lot is NOT to be used to drop off or

pick-up our child(ren).

4. Do not stop on the south side of Japonica Rd. It is a no

stopping zone.

It is unsafe for our children to run across the road.

5. The newly paved passage way to the west of the school

near the new addition is an emergency Fire Access route.

Pick up and drop off and Parking are strictly forbidden and

any cars in the area will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s

expense. Parents can access the kindergarten area at the

north end from the main school grounds in order to drop off

and pick up their children.

Have a meeting place a short walking distance away,

established in advance so your child knows where to look for

you.

Please, do not double park, block residents’ driveways OR

park in the staff parking lot before school or after

school. NB: Please be advised that there is AMPLE

PARKING on Crosland Dr. and Alice Crescent.

As members of the Our Lady of Wisdom community, please

feel free to report dangerous situations directly to the

Toronto Police services using the following link, as this allows

for the issue to be dealt with legally.

AGM/(CSAC) ELECTIONS

The Annual General Meeting/CSAC Elections

is scheduled for Wednesday, September

23, 2015 at 6:30 pm. The elections for the CSAC

Council will be held at this time. Anyone interested in

becoming a member of the CSAC Council, whether in one

of the Executive positions or as a Member at Large, is

invited to complete a self-nomination form or have

another parent complete a nomination form. Lease

contact the main office if you would like a nomination

form. They can also be downloaded electronically at

https://www.tcdsb.org/schools/ourladyofwisdom/ForP

arents/CSAC/Pages/Nomination-Forms.aspx For any

questions relating to the Election or request for a

nomination form, please contact S. Platt or Lisa

Landriault at [email protected].

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Please consider the following volunteer opportunities

to become more involved in your child’s school

community:

Pizza and/or Sub Lunch – The lunch programs are very

time and labour intensive. Our school needs a

dedicated group of volunteers that can share the

workload. At this point the lunch programs are on hold

until volunteers step forward.

Special Events – assist with events at school, such as

Shrove Tuesday breakfast, Carnival, and Play Day

Peer Tutoring Learning Program – supervise students

involved in reading recovery program; 45 minutes/two

mornings each week for 8 weeks; ability to speak

French would be beneficial. Volunteer applications and

board mandated criminal background checks can be

obtained from the office.

ANAPHYLAXIS ALERT Our Lady of Wisdom is an allergen aware school. There

are students in attendance who suffer from severe and

life threatening allergies to certain foods such as

peanuts, nut products, sesame seeds, eggs, seafood

and shell fish. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life

threatening allergic reaction.

A reminder to parents that administration, teachers

and support staff of the TCDSB are NOT permitted

to administer any type of prescription medication

during the school day, unless we have written signed

authorization signed by you the parents and the

prescribing physician. The forms to dispense any

medication may be updated on a regular basis and are

available from the principal. Please send back the

forms for the administration of medication as soon as

possible. Please be advised that staff will NOT

dispense non-prescription medication to students.

Should you require additional information or have any

questions

about this protocol please contact the school principal. We

kindly ask that parents refrain from sending foods containing

nuts to the school. Please do not send edible treats in for

birthdays, a small token (pencils, or stickers) would suffice.

IMPORTANT: If your child requires an EPI-PEN for

anaphylactic emergencies THEY MUST WEAR one on them

AT ALL TIMES. Please supply an additional EPI-PEN for safe

keeping in the office. We also STRONGLY recommend

ensuring that your child wear a medical alert bracelet to

indicate ALL allergy or other serious medical conditions they

may have.

WELLNESS AND MENTAL HEALTH AT Our Lady of

Wisdom CES

The Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School community looks

forward to working together with Alanna Barr who will be

the new liaison Public Health Nurse (LPHN) for our

school starting in the 2015-2016 school year.

As always, an important part of the LPHN role is to

work with school administration, teachers, students

and parents to help identify and address the health

needs in schools using the Healthy School approach.

Additional support and programming around substance

misuse prevention will also be provided by the LPHN.

School GOAL: If we engage staff members to obtain

and implement specific tools and strategies to address

mental wellness, then we will improve the level of

mental health in our school community.

Considering recent data from the 2014-2015 Safe and

Caring School Report for 2014-2015, in which 30. 2%

of grade 6 and 8 students indicated that they feel very

safe at school, while 65.1% have indicated that they

feel safe, I am pleased to announce Our Lady of

Wisdom’s enlisting and partnership with the soccer

freestylers of “Freeze Out Bullying.” As part of

Bullying Awareness Week later on in November, the

freestylers will engage and equip students with the

wherewithal to speak assertively, demonstrate respect,

engage in safe reporting and demonstrate respect. The

program will surely complement the “Virtues of the

Month” which many students commit themselves to

demonstrating in not only word but most importantly

action.

Food Guide and incorporate 3 food groups. The program is a non-profit

initiative which is monitored by Toronto Public Health.

Snacks will be delivered to classrooms daily. Should you have any

additional questions or concerns, please direct them to Mrs. Shirley who

is the nutrition program coordinator. Again, we would like to emphasize

that the administration and the program coordinator are well aware of

allergies that students have, and will take appropriate measures to

ensure that the program reflects these needs.

efficiently that the parent community contributes a modest donation of

$10 or more to contribute towards the program. Donor tax receipts can

be made directly by the Angel Foundation for Learning. We thank
