TIME MANAGEMENT
Carly Guy
September 2015 Induction
WHAT IS THE GOAL? To give you control over your own time To reduce your chances of failing
BE ORGANISED Have a dedicated work space Ensure you have everything you need Plan your time using a method that suits
you
PLANNING What takes the longest? – Work
awareness When am I at my best? – Self awareness Urgent Vs. Important – Prioritisation Flexibility - Variation
FOCUS & PRIORITY MATRIX
Pane A: High urgency, high importance – Do it now
Pane B: Low urgency, high importance –important not necessarily today.
Pane C: High urgency, low importance – less important needs doing soon.
Pane D: Low urgency, low importance – does this need to be done?
WHEN ARE YOUR PEAK & TROUGH TIMES?
We all have Peak times: Periods in your day when you are potentially at your best.
We all have Trough times: Periods when your energy & ability to focus is low.
Energy
Time
7am lunch 7pm
What time is it…or…Who’s time is it?
Consider how much time is under your control each day. If you plan for say 3 hours of work but only have 2 hours of controllable time, you may end up at the end of the day feeling frustrated, guilty & stressed.
Time management is controlling your life by controlling your time by controlling the events which you can control, and not trying to control those things which you cannot control!
You can control yourself & your response, but you can not control everything such as others or the weather.
THE EFFECTIVENESS CYCLE
Effectiveness
Working efficiently, achieving what you set out to do, on
time, harmoniously & happily
Self EsteemFeel good about yourself, confident, satisfied & happy
Event ControlUsing the time you have UNDER your control. RESPONDING to events that you do not control proactively.
EFFECTIVE STUDY TECHNIQUES Active listening Participation Reading for comprehension Note taking Revision
HOW DO ATHLETES TRAIN? Start the night before? Only revise the vital subjects? Do a bit, leave it and then hope for the
best?
WHAT WILL HELP YOU? Read constantly Write quality
These skills are FUNDAMENTAL to your course and will help to train your brain into developing thoughts and interpreting these thoughts on paper.
ASSUME YOUR TEACHERS ARE HUMAN Ask for help Take note of the feedback you are given Make time to talk to your teacher and
your classmates Make sure you know the deadlines – and
stick to them
