Mission Statement
The College Club of Buffalo is a community of professional women
who promote the advancement of education
through programming and scholarship endowment.
The College Club provides a meeting place for social interaction and charitable purposes and
maintains modest living accommodations for women.
From Our President……….
Dear Friends,
It has definitely been a sultry summer bringing to mind the movie, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”! The
weather did not deter many of our members from devoting countless hours of service.
The house is looking absolutely beautiful, and if you came by during the Garden Walk, you would have seen us at our
shiny best. The woodwork and rugs were washed, and thanks to Lillian’s generosity, many of the tables in the living
and dining room were refinished. Mary Ellen spent nearly every day of a week with the workmen, as well as Clare.
Carla was again busy taking furniture back and forth to the upholsterer and has generously offered to again cook the
Bridge luncheon. Because of her generosity, we were able to raise the funds for reupholstering.
Our devoted gardeners, Nancy Davidson and Pat Krims, toiled countless hours to further expand our beautiful gardens
and Jean Singleton coordinated and publicized the event. We were absolutely thrilled with the response from many
avid Garden Walk attendees, and many women expressed an interest in getting to know a bit more about our
Club. Hopefully, they will come back and visit.
You should be receiving this newsletter on the day of our second annual Garden Party. I wish to thank Kathy Howells
and her committee for organizing and hosting this event. I am sure that it will be lovely.
Our dear Judy Danforth has volunteered to become Historian for our club. I know that she is the absolute best person
for the job. Debbie Dahlberg offered to head Program and is working diligently with her committee to prepare this
year’s programs. Please check your newsletter for dates and times. Also, Mary Vacanti has stepped in to fill a
vacancy on the board as a director. Welcome Mary!
Please remember, your suggestions are always welcome, and we are always happy when you volunteer to serve in
any capacity. As we enter our one hundred third year, I will quote myself from last year….. “We hope to continue our
imprint for future generations of intelligent women and appreciate all your efforts. Please, continue your spirit of
generosity. The College Club needs your time and talent. Without you, it is just another building on Summer
Street.”
Fondly,
Beverly

There’s more to life than Bridge……………
Read Between the Wines: September 15th
Usually “Reading between the Wines” happens on the first Thursday evening
of every month. This month we are deviating a bit. Our first book of the new
College Club year is “Harriet Wolfe's Seventh Book of Wonders" by Julianna
Baggott. In “Harriet Wolf’s Seventh Book of Wonders,” its title character
rewrites the story of her life when she’s in old age. Her aim is to leave behind
a document explaining herself to her daughter, Eleanor, who never knew her
own father, and to Eleanor’s daughters, Tilton and Ruth. Harriet Wolf's
Seventh Book of Wonders, Julianna Baggott's most sweeping and mesmerizing
novel yet, offers a profound meditation on motherhood and sisterhood, as well
as on the central importance of stories. It is a novel that affords its characters
that rare chance we all long for-the chance to reimagine the stories of our lives while there's still
time.
Breakfast by the Book: September 18th The Breakfast by the Book committee is meeting on August 21st to plan for the
monthly events. There will be a social hour with coffee and goodies at 9:30
AM. Book discussion will begin at 10:00 AM. All are welcome! The book
selection is a novel, "The Invention of Wings" by Sue Monk Kidd. The
Invention of Wings, a powerful and sweeping historical novel by Sue Monk
Kidd, begins, fittingly, with an image of flight: Hetty “Handful”, who has
grown up as a slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, recalls the night
her mother told her that her ancestors in Africa could fly over trees and clouds.
That day, Handful’s mother, Charlotte, gave her daughter the gift of hope—
the possibility that someday she might regain her wings and fly to
freedom. Throughout Kidd’s exquisitely written story, Handful struggles, sometimes with quiet
dissidence, sometimes with open rebellion, to cultivate a belief in the invincibility of her spirit
and in the sacred truth that one does not need actual wings in order to rise.
Hostess: Judy Danforth
Discussion Leader: Dorinne Ebel
Future Plans:
Do you have a current passport? Do you have an enhanced driver’s license? Well, you
need one of these if you have any plans to cross the Peace Bridge into Canada. And we
have plans to spend a day at Niagara-on-the-Lake—enjoying a play, shopping and eating.
Monthly Program Dinner:
Wednesday, September 21st
This evening we will be entertained by the ‘3
Ukes 4 U’, a fabulous group of ukulele players
who are back by popular demand. They were
with us last December and it was a fun
evening
Program Luncheons
This month we have two program luncheons
scheduled: Monday, September 12th and
Monday, September 26th.
Our speaker for September 12th has not been
confirmed—we are waiting for his call even as
I word process this newsletter. But I am
assured that the program will be marvelous
and you will love it. So make your plans to
attend our first program luncheon of the year
and plan to be surprised.
September 26th
Dr. Anthony Del Nuovo, Ph.D will conduct a
workshop exploring the present daily
effectiveness of our interpersonal
connections. It will seek ways to enrich and
revitalize our here and now experiences so as
to renew and add new vitality to one’s golden
years. Myths and truths regarding elder years
will be explored and addressed.
Program luncheons are scheduled on
Mondays with the exception of the 3rd
Monday which is reserved for the
Bridge Luncheon.
Lunch is served at 12:30 p.m. Catering

All homeowners know that maintaining their home is an essential part of ownership. 264 Summer Street is
our home. Over the years all the members have stepped up and taken ownership of this house. But it is an
ongoing effort. This past year we have had several chairs reupholstered. Member donations and the care and
feeding of our resident piggy have helped in this endeavor.
Our window treatments need help. So we are starting another fundraising project.
We are offering a limited edition monogrammed green apron for you to purchase
to help our efforts to improve our windows. Each apron is $20.00.
Applewood’s Café provides us with a delicious lunch and dinner. Our server works very hard to meet our
needs. In a restaurant, a group of our size would be automatically charged a 20% service charge. We need to
be cognizant of this and provide a tip for her. $2.00 per person is equal to 15% of our lunch fee. This should
be more than generous. Of course, you may decide to give more and that’s just fine.
The Garden Committee has
spent many hours weeding,
planting, and watering this
summer to make the gardens
look beautiful! Thank you
all!
Summer of 2016 Activities:
We started the summer season with a wonderfully
successful watercolor guided class. It was a
perfect evening for this activity. Members and
their guests learned to watercolor! And these
pictures show the results of our efforts!
On July 20th, the club held its first Garden Party of Garden Party
of the summer. The second one was held on August 17th. College
Club members came together on these two days for fellowship, to
enjoy good food and to play bridge.
A lunch out was planned to Templeton Landing. And an outing to watch a baseball game was
planned.
The last weekend of July saw us participating in the Garden Walk. We offered tours of our
Club House as well as showing off our wonderful gardens—front and back.
The following information is provided for your information. Last year Beverly and I attended
this event and it was wonderful. If you can, plan to attend. You won’t regret it! And if you let
Bev know that you are planning to attend, she can reserve a table for the College Club.
Dear Madam,
The Buffalo Federation of Women’s Clubs is having a fashion show on Saturday, October 1,
2016 at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens. Doors will open at 10:30 am.
Tickets are $$32.00 per person.
We will feature clothing from The Jacqueline Shoppe; Elegant Vintage Gowns courtesy of Ellen
DeWind; Furs by Russell and children’s clothing from The Children’s Place.
This fashion show is our major yearly fundraiser.
The attached Patron ad solicitation letter explains the various charities and scholarships which
benefit from our fundraising endeavors.
The fashion show will be very successful if every club participates by buying tickets and
donating a basket.
At this event we will feature a basket auction, wine basket raffle and a share the wealth raffle.
Scarves will also be available for purchase.
Please feel free to give us a call at (716-864-5353 with any questions or concerns. We thank you
in advance for your support.
Best regards,
BFWC President, Joan Weichman and
BFWC Fashion Show Chair, Carol McMahon
