Preparing for the Future

It has been two years since my installation (August 16, 2014) and more than three years (January 15, 2013) since my arrival as your transitional pastor. This summer, as I participated in the Youth Triennium gathering of 5,000 in West Fayette, Indiana, I felt like I was part of the Church of the future. “Diverse, vibrant, youthful, passionate, real, tech savvy, connected and thoughtful” as words to describe the Presbyterian teens from around the world. Our teens will be sharing their experiences during Adult Education Hour in September. However, I have thought about the many differences between the worship services and activities at Perdue University and at most local churches. It is almost impossible to replicate the enthusiasm of thousands of youth accompanied by professional contemporary musicians. However, it is possible to discuss important, relevant topics as they relate to our Christian faith. It is now possible to listen to UTube music and view video clips during our classes. What is useful to remember is this: teaching the basic lessons of our faith require engagement in the scripture, honest and thoughtful interpretations and current applications. One of the teenagers questioned why we used the same scripture lesson for a whole day. Why did we use the “Good Samaritan Parable” for a morning worship service, an afternoon small group exercise and discussion with our delegation in the evening? I was reminded that youth as well as adults need time to digest, understand and apply one scripture to their life situation. With that awareness, I am resolved to make the best of the resources we have to teach all ages. Let’s not waste our chance to be the Church of the Present and Future.

Remember Sunday is our prime time to reflect on, teach, and explore scriptures. Adult Education Hour gives us an opportunity to discuss questions, debate interpretations and illustrate principles. Right now we have two worship services, Children’s School, Adult education, choirs and music rehearsals. And, the committees, elders, deacons and staff have worked harder than ever to make changes that you suggested more than two years ago. I hope you come back to church this fall, filled with excitement and hope for the future. I hope we can learn from the past, examine the present and prepare for the future.

Dear Church Family, In January, I celebrated my 80th birthday. The last 30 of those years have been spent with you in the office of The Presbyterian Church in Geneva. All wonderful years with many laughs and tears. We worked with interims and associates, Charlie Peet, Mary Ludvigsen, Lynn Nelson and Nancy Birdsong. Many music directors, organists, choir and bell directors, parish nurses and custodians. And, of course, Jim. Through it all there was Alan and Kathy helping me, our own three musketeers. We have welcomed and gotten to know our new pastor, Deb. We are known as a welcoming, all-inclusive congregation in Geneva. I am so proud and happy to be a part of this special group of people. You have prayed and supported me through five surgeries and the death of my husband. That love and caring will never be forgotten. I’m sure that many of you who have also received this special love know what I mean. Now, I think it is time to see what other things I can do to stay out of mischief. Spend time with grandchildren, work in a winery, volunteer at the hospital or make myself useful somewhere I haven’t even thought about. So, at the end of September, I will “fold my tent and silently slip away.” See you in church – or Wegman’s!. With love and thanks, Edna May

Amazingly! the summer is almost over and Rally Sunday is fast approaching. Linda and I spent two wonderful days at the Augsburg-Fortress Church Music Summer Clinic in Philadelphia this August and came away energized with new music and ideas that we are looking forward to sharing with you. As I write this, the beginning of our Fall music programs are just three weeks away and I wanted to encourage you to come to join us in celebrating our Faith with music. Our active and vibrant choir meets on Thursday evenings from 7:30 until 9:00. The choir is open to all adults and high school students who enjoy singing. Throughout the year, we sing for Sunday Worship and for special occasions such as Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Easter Sunday, and the Sacred Song Service. We welcome you to come and join us. Our repertoire includes anthems from many periods and styles as well as psalm settings, hymns and service music. Singers in the choir enjoy learning and singing together as well as being spiritually enriched in a musical way and by the camaraderie of friends. If you cannot make a commitment for the whole year, come and join us for the season you can. In Late September we will begin rehearsing our Christmas music and will plan to work on that music at the beginning of each rehearsal. Another wonderful opportunity to musically celebrate our Faith is with the Bell Choir which has had a resounding year. The Bell Choir meets Monday evening from 5:15 to 6:15 and is a great group of fun loving ringers. If you have never rung a bell, you are in for a treat. It is a wonderful experience to stand in the middle of such beautiful sound. We are a group of both very experienced ringers and beginners. We have great fun AND make beautiful music. SERRV International Fair Trade Gift Shop

Your support changes lives! Serrv is a nonprofit, fair trade organization dedicated to lifting disadvantaged artisans, farmers, and their families out of poverty. Behind every item that we offer, you'll find a story of positive change. A story of an empowered artisan or farmer who works in a safe environment, can send his or her children to school, and can save for the future with the reliable income he or she earns through fair trade. We partner with 55 small-scale artisan/farmer organizations and cooperatives to bring you unique, handcrafted product collections. We emphasize the word "partnership" in our work because that's what these relationships are–we've created a system of creative collaboration built on mutual respect and trust, creating high-quality and well-designed items using sustainable materials and production techniques. Some of these partnerships have lasted for over 35 years! In our world today, handcraft production is the second largest form of employment behind agriculture. Many small-scale artisans in developing countries lack access to markets, business skills and tools needed to grow. Through our nonprofit mission and deep commitment to fair trade principles, we are dedicated to not only sell our partners' products but to develop educational offerings, skill trainings, resources, and more to help grow sustainable businesses. Prepayments are always offered for orders, reasonable production timelines are agreed upon, and we provide grants so artisans can expand and provide more jobs in their communities. And of course, we pay a fair wage. Now that the summer season is coming to a close, the shop will resume normal Sunday hours beginning Rally Day, September 11 after both church services and every Saturday from 10 to 12:30. If you need something special at other times, please call the church office and they will arrange for a volunteer to help you.

Dear Church Family, I hope you treated your skin well this summer!! It was working overtime trying to keep you cool and protect the inside of you from all the germs on the outside of you. When there is a break in the skin’s protective germ barrier, problems can arise. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the skin. It can be easily treated in the beginning stage, but can grow to a life threatening event if not stopped. The bacteria generally enters through a break in the skin; a cut, scratch, or crack in dry or peeling skin, or athlete’s foot. The bacterial infections are usually caused by one of two bugs, streptococcus and staphylococcus. An antibiotic resistant strain of staph (MRSA) is a culprit being seen more frequently. If left untreated, cellulitis will progress into the tissues of the body and the bloodstream causing sepsis (infection of the blood) and possibly flesh eating disease (necrotizing fasciitis). So, after that lovely description I just gave you, I suspect this is not something anyone really wants to get. So how do we prevent cellulitis? First, any time you get a cut, scratch, puncture, etc., WASH IT PRONTO!!! Good old soap and water applied ASAP should help. Watch the area for expanding redness, swelling, pain, warmth, blisters, skin puckering, tight shiny skin, or an area containing an abscess with puss. A fever or chills that suddenly occur after an incident compromising the skin integrity warrants a call and possibly a visit to your doctor. I cannot stress how a small cut on your foot or leg can turn into a life threatening event! Cellulitis can occur anywhere on your body, including your face, but is most commonly seen on feet and legs. Diabetics need to be especially careful with cuts to the feet and legs. If not treated quickly cellulitis may lead to gangrene and a need for amputation of part of the leg. If you do end up with cellulitis, a ten to fourteen day course of antibiotics will usually take care of the problem. If you cannot tell that there is any improvement after a few days on the antibiotic, let your doctor know, you may need a different antibiotic. In the case of MRSA or a cellulitis that had not been diagnosed quickly, IV antibiotics and hospitalization may be required. The moral of the story is, take care of your skin, don’t let things go! Redness and pain that doesn’t go away quickly is never good. Call me with any questions or needs 315 759 9039. God Bless, Beth

Where is God Calling Me to Go?

Last month, I was one of the adult advisors who traveled with the local delegation to the Presbyterian Youth Triennium in Indiana. With the theme of this year’s event being “Go,” my title question came up repeatedly, and I’ve been pondering it a lot in the weeks since the trip. I used to think that being “called” by God was just something for pastors and other individuals who felt a spiritual pull to go into the ministry. I didn’t feel that that was my “calling”, so I figured I would never feel prompted by God in that way. In recent years – and especially in the past month, I’ve come to realize that my understanding of this has been much too narrow. While God calls some of us to preach, others have been given gifts and talents for other roles in the community, and they are no less meaningful. It can be hard to discern God’s intention behind providing us with the gifts we possess and the situations and challenges we encounter. Ever since I was much younger, little kids have been almost drawn to me, and it seemed natural for me to become a teacher, and yet, I think I am meant to do something more. Growing up in a nontraditional family with a caring church, the ability to spend time in nature, physical strength, good health, and a solid education, along with the challenges I’ve faced, has provided me with a different experience from many of my peers. We each have backgrounds that are as unique as our fingerprints, and we have opportunities every day to make a difference in the world, but the idea of being “called” goes even further beyond simply being a good person. Embedded in the very phrase “called by God” is the idea that we have a purpose to fulfill. That’s not to say that there is only one thing that we are put on this planet to do –we do have free will, after all. It would make sense, though, that the brilliant and all-knowing Creator might place our unique selves in the time, place, and body we’re in, in the hopes that we could do something to improve the lives of those around us. I’ve come to believe that there are many opportunities available to us, and we can choose which door to walk through, but we’re also inclined – and prepared, for some doors more than others. Maybe there’s something telling you to make a move or take a step. I think that could be a call. It’s a gut feeling that you were made for this, that it’s the right thing to do. Where is God calling you to go and what is God asking you to do? Ryan Kincaid

I am truly grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend Presbyterian Youth Triennium at Purdue University! Every minute of my experience was well worth the generous contributions made by our church. From trading buttons with new friends across the nation to worshiping in an auditorium packed with 5,000 youth, it felt like an honor to be Presbyterian. Not only has this experience deepened my faith in a unique environment, it has also called me to go into the world and make disciples, an invitation I now feel obligated to accept. God Bless, Audra Burrall Triennium 2016 was a BLAST!!! There really aren’t any words that can encompass all that Triennium is, but it is honestly the most fun that I had all summer. It was also really enlightening: between worship, small group discussions, and rec events we got to meet a lot of people with very different perspectives. Everyone (all 5000 people, although we weren’t able to meet all of them) had an interesting and unique take on the scriptures and how it related to the world today. Because I am going to college in a few short weeks, the message of “GO!” really resonated with me, and I think it was really what I needed to hear at this point in my life. Thank you so much to our congregation, who both hosted us during an overnight and paid for the Geneva youth to go. Alison Lamb

THOUGHTS ON TRIENNIUM GO!!!!!!!!!

Page 16: September 2016 Geneva Pres Newsletter2016 . The Presbyterian Church in Geneva 24 Park Place . Geneva NY 14456 (315) 789- 1343 . ... Nelson and Nancy Birdsong. Many music directors,

I had an amazing experience at Triennium. It was cool to meet people from all over the country and to make so many new friends. I think my absolute favorite part of Triennium was exchanging buttons. These buttons came in all shapes and sizes, of practically anything imaginable, and we would trade these buttons with people from other Presbyteries. Not only was collecting these buttons exciting but it was nice to interact with so many different people. Although Triennium was very fun, we had deep discussions in our small groups that really got me thinking about the world around me and what I can do to make a difference. Finally, I would like to say thank you to everyone in our congregation who made this extraordinary experience possible. ~Rye Weber

I would like to thank the members of our church for providing me with the opportunity to go to Triennium. I enjoyed being able to help make shoes for Sole Hope, an organization that provides shoes to children in Africa. The many activities around the retreat gave me a chance to make new friends. During Triennium, I was able to develop a deeper understanding of my faith. It was definitely an experience I will never forget. Ben DeMoras Having not participated in Triennium as a youth, I was especially eager to experience that which I had heard so many great things about – and I can testify to what a memorable, hopeful, “restore-my-faith-in-humanity” type of trip it was. It’s hard to sum up the whole program in a few short paragraphs, but I’ll bring up a couple of the things that stand out in my mind. One was the demeanor of nearly every person I encountered at the event. Everyone was trying so hard to be loving, attentive, and understanding. The very first day, one of the speakers said “let’s try to make this the most loving place on Earth right now” and it seemed like all who were listening took those words to heart; we were able to share and hear personal narratives that few would have been comfortable offering in a different setting, I was able to discuss hopes and dreams with like-minded people and receive supportive, helpful feedback, and the youths and adults alike acted with maturity and grace.

Page 17: September 2016 Geneva Pres Newsletter2016 . The Presbyterian Church in Geneva 24 Park Place . Geneva NY 14456 (315) 789- 1343 . ... Nelson and Nancy Birdsong. Many music directors,

Another thing that stuck out to me was the variety of types of activities offered – from artsy, quiet, and meditative to energetic dancing and singing, there was something for everyone. There was one particular presentation during one of the services that resonated with me the most. A woman from Nashville introduced us to an initiative she is working on, called Sacred Sparks Ministry. This ministry works with people who are homeless, offering spiritual guidance, quarters and rides for the laundromat, and a listening ear. I think her story was meaningful to me because she responded to a need in the community that many tend to ignore. People who are homeless are like modern day versions of the victim in the Good Samaritan story. They need care and attention.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Go”, and we explored various passages in the Bible where the notion of going comes up – “Let my people go,” “go and do likewise,” etc. Though it’s been a month since I embarked on the journey that was Triennium, two questions still echo in my mind: Where is God calling me to go? What is God calling me to do? I think a simple thing our church can do is to collect quarters, or donations in general, for the Sacred Sparks Ministry, and perhaps even get involved in working with the homeless population in our own community. For me personally, the Triennium was an invitation to examine my own life and my place in the world, and I don’t want to waste this gift I’ve been given. Ryan Kincaid

Thank you so much for the paperweight and laundry bag. Every time I loo kat them I will be reminded of the congregation who helped raise me, and that is sure to help alliviate any homesickness I get. Not only that, but they will both be useful in very practical and immediate ways. I look forward to continuing my membership at the church on breaks and visitis home. Thanks again. Alison Lamb I just wanted to thank you all for all that you’ve done for the past many years. Baccalaureate Sunday was so special and went so smoothly. My experience in church has been so great thanks to you! Thanks to Mrs. Breese for the pictures and thanks to Christian Ed for the laundry bag! The pictures will help me remember special memories for a lifetime! Thank you again. Alaina Miller WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE HEAT Just to let you all know, Boy Scout Troop 4 is one of the few beneficiaries of the summer heat wave. When it's that warm and muggy, folks get thirsty and tend to drink more bottled water and soda, as well as pilsners, lagers, ales and stouts. Thanks to you and some graduation parties, the troop deposited more than $275 in bottle and can returns over the summer -- toward our next High Adventure trip. Thanks again, and please keep saving. Fred Schühle Many, many thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers, for your cards, and for your kind words during Winifred Schenck’s final hospital stay and following her death at the end of June. I am overwhelmed with the continued support for my uncle, my sisters and myself. Her memorial service was a lovely celebration of her life. We are blessed to be part of a very caring congregation. "We are grateful for our blessings, for our blessings great and small..." Community and the power of prayer... A former choir member had me encouraging finches to provide

4-part harmony as part of my recovery from illness. A lovely pair of soft new pajamas helped take away some of the indignity of hospital gowns. A friend arranged for a trip to Isabella Spa for some pampering after I was released from Geneva General Hospital. Time shared with dear friends was priceless. Delicious culinary treats awakened my tastebuds. Cards read and reread helped lift my spirits. Wonderful administrators, doctors, nurses, health techs, and cleaning staff worked together to create the best possible health outcome for me. I am so grateful to so many in this journey to wellness, particularly to my husband, Donald, who shopped, cleaned, cooked and encouraged. Three nights Donald stayed with me in the ICU while the unit was so very busy. "Gifts of beauty we've been given so to brighten up our days. Take these gifts and treat them gently. Sharing them will be our praise." Many thanks for all expressions of love from a wonderful church family. Gratefully, Chris Wertman Our thanks to all of you for the prayers, love, hugs, cards, calls,

flowers, donations and support during our very sad time on the loss of David.

Special thanks to Pastor Deb for being with us as we remembered David. He was a great son, brother, uncle and friend to all. We are so blessed to have such a loving, caring church family. Dot Newcomb and Family

Our database has the capability of including wedding anniversary dates, birth dates, email addresses, street addresses, alternate addresses (where you go when the weather gets cold!), home phone numbers, cell phone numbers, work phone numbers in addition to individual and family pictures. If you would like to have any of the information listed above added to our database, please send a note to the church office or email it to [email protected]. Name Tag Update In May a list of members and friends was developed that has been used to print name tags that can be worn on Sunday mornings. The list was initially created by adding the names of currently serving elders, deacons and staff. We then added the names of members and frequent visitors who signed the blue pew pads during the last three Sundays in May. The list was not a complete list of all members and friends who worship with us on a Sunday morning, but it was a starting point. During the summer months we included additional members and friends in the list and have printed their name tags. If you are attending our church on a regular basis and wish to have name tag printed for you, please make a note in the blue pew pad so that we can print your name tag for the following Sunday.

Technology Update Work has been completed on the changes to the church’s wireless network in the Christian Education Wing, The Fellowship Hall and the parlors. To increase the coverage of our public network, PCG-Public, we have installed a new access points on the south wall of the Fellowship Hall, one each in the upper and lower hallways in the CE Wing.

The PCG-Public network is password protected and the password changes every month. Signs displaying current password are conspicuously placed throughout the church. The sign's locations are:

1. The church office on the wall above the credenza. 2. The church conference room on the wall above the

Deacon's corner. 3. The North Parlor on the wall between the windows

(Sunday's only). 4. The South Parlor on the wall between the windows

(Sunday's only). 5. Upstairs in the CE Wing in the hallway inside the

children's choir room.

If you have any questions about the changes to our wireless network, please feel free to contact Art Lewis.
