President's Thoughts Hello friends and welcome to September! If you are like me, August was not fun and quite slow in the fishing department. It just seemed that every other thing in life needed attention all at once. Now, this being said, I was recently contacted by Jim Ridgeway who is the Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 586. The scouts were working on their fly fishing badges during a weekend camping trip just west of Tipp City on 571. As a requirement of the badge, the kids had to learn how to tie backing to fly line, line to leader, leader to tippet and tippet to fly. They received casting instruction from their scout leader, introduction to materials, and had to fish. For the badge, they were required to catch a fish, clean it, prepare and cook the fish, then eat it. When Jim called, he asked if MVFF would be available to instruct and teach fly tying to the kids. Karen and I accepted the challenge. The experience was nothing shy of fantastic. We started out with the idea of a two hour block of instruction. I won’t concede to admitting that I can be wordy, but I yam what I yam. Somehow the two hour block turned into four hours. (SHOCKER, I KNOW!) We had to work in relays due to limited tools and lighting. You can use headlamps, you know, because we did. Between the storms, high temps and sticky humidity, (Did I mention we were outside?) we got-er-done. The kids were attentive and amazing. I taught fly tying history, basics and the wonderful world of the Greenie Meanie. Madison, how to tie spiders.Needless to say, each scout, regardless of skill level orability was able to meet the requirements to obtain theirbadges. At the end of the evening, Mr. Ridgeway attempted to payus for materials, but we struck up a bargain in which thescouts have offered to assist us in a future project such asriver clean-up.Our time ended as the kids began watching “A River RunsThrough It”.I was wrong. August was one of the better months of thisyear.See you on the 12th.

Sneak PreviewPlanning for our 2016-2017 indoor meeting season is

well underway. Speakers for our first two indoor

meetings have already been set up and here is a little

taste of what you can look forward to . . .

On October 10th Nathan Perkinson will be speaking on

smallmouth fishing techniques. Nathan lives in

northeastern Indiana. He spends most of his time fly

fishing for trout and warm water species in Indiana,

Michigan and Ohio. He is a frequent contributor of

articles to American Angler magazine.

On November 14th we will hear from Brian Chocklett.

Brian is a full time guide on the James, New and

Roanoke rivers in Virginia. He routinely goes after trout,

bass, stripers and muskie. He is a well-known tyer and

fly designer, e.g., the Game Changer. He will discuss

using baitfish type flies for large predatory fish. Brian

will also conduct a tying class before the meeting

(details later). He often writes articles for fly fishing

publications such as Fly Fisherman magazine.

Thanks again to John Young who continues as the

Speaker Chairman. We're looking forward to another

outstanding indoor meeting season.

PHWFF UpdateThere were two fly fishing outings in August. The first was a return trip to SilverLake and then on August 27th a visit to the Duck Pond (private ponds owned byTRIDEC Technologies). At the Silver Lake excursion there was a virtual armadaof boats to solve the issue of limited shore fishing access. Thanks to Bill Bennett,Bill Grimpe, Ken Hudak, Dale Stephens and Mike Wolford for bringing theirwatercraft. And thanks to J.D. Dukes for bringing in a much- appreciated trollingmotor and battery! Also, thanks to Frank Cox, who served as our "Fleet SafetyOfficer", on his uber-equipped pontoon boat, monitoring the upcoming potentialfor storms and circulating among the fleet to provide asistance when necessary.

September events will be held atMertensia Springs Trout Club anda return visit to the Duck Pond.

1. Place the hook in the vise and attach the thread about ¼of the way down the hook shank, then take several wrapstoward the hook bend. Remove the thread tag and let thethread hang.

2. Cut a single strand of ribbing and tie it in by one endwhere you left the thread. Take tight touching turns over itback to slightly down the hook bend, then reverse threaddirection and wrap tight touching turns back to about whereyou originally tied in the thread. Let the thread hang.

3. Grasp the ribbing material and palmer it forward over thethread body to where you left the thread and tie it down witha few tight thread wraps. Remove any excess ribbing. Letthe thread hang.

4. For durability, coat the body and rib with a light coat ofclear nail polish, head cement, or UV resin and let it drybefore continuing.

5. Dub the thread to create a thin dubbing noodle, then tiea small dubbing ball at the front of the body as a small thoraxand tie it off. Remove any excess dubbing.

6. Cut a 3” piece of spent wing material and tie it in on topof the hook shank by its middle directly in front of thedubbing ball thorax. Tie it in so that there is one wing oneach side of the thorax pointing back and slightlydownward. DO NOT TRIM THE SPENT WINGS AT THISTIME. End with the thread right in front of the spent wings

tie-in point and let the thread hang.

7. Select an appropriately sized hackle feather and trim offthe fluff at its base. Tie it in on the near side of the hookshank right in front of the spent wings tie in point. Tie itdown with the concave side facing the hook shank. The tipof the feather should be pointing toward the hook bend. Letthe thread hang.

8. Cut and clean and stack a ¼ pencil diameter clump ofdeer/elk hair to use as an overwing. Measure the hair sothat the tips reach back to the hook bend and tie it in on topof the hook shank directly in front of the spent wings withseveral tight thread wraps. Lift up the hair butts and takeseveral thread wraps in front of them to make the butts standup.

9. Now pull the hair wing and butts upward, then grasp thehackle feather and take several wraps with it counterclockwise around the base of the wing and butts (similarly tocreating a post for a parachute) and tie it off in front of thewing behind the hook eye. Do a whip finish and cut thethread.

10. Separate and pull together the butts of the overwingand trim them short similarly to a caddis head.

11. Grasp the underwings and trim them even with the backof the hook bend.

Casual Fly TyingThe Casual Fly Tying sessions meet twice a month throughNovember 22nd. There is no agenda and you must bring yourown supplies. But you get expert advice (or at least someadvice) free of charge! We meet at Gander Mountain at 6:00p.m. The schedule is posted on the Calendar Page, MessageBoard and there is a link to a printable version on our website mvff.us as well. See you there!

Quote of the MonthThe indications which tell your dry-fly angler when to strikeare clear and unmistakable, but those which bid a wet-flyman raise his rod-point and draw in the steel are frequentlyso subtle, so evanescent and impalpable to the senses, that, when the bending rod assures him that he has divinedaright, he feels an ecstasy as though he had performed amiracle each time.

Casting Competition News! This will be the last casting event of the year and the end of our outdoor meetings. This is your last chance to come on over and cast abit…regardless of your skill level. No water required this month, just grass (hope it’s been mowed). Hopefully the wind will cooperate aswell.

The only thing required to participate in the casting events is for you to show up. You don’t even have to own a fly rod (although, if you do,you can cheat by practicing at home – just don’t tell the judges; they might, no – they will – give you a hard time). There is no agerequirement or limit, no height requirement, and no previous casting experience is needed. Everyone is welcome!

CASTING COMPETITION CUT-OFF TIMECasting will be held ONLY from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. The cut-off time will help ensure we are not holding up the meeting with scoring, etc., so come on over and cast early.

Judges Comment: If NO Participants are at the casting location, at our discretion, we may close up BEFORE the 7pm deadline.

** AUGUST TIGHTLINES CORRECTION:The Masters Division winner of the July Roll Cast was actually Jim Calvert.Jim hit all 5 targets using only 8 of the allotted 15 casts.

Here are the results for the August Bass Bug competition:

First Flight, Winner: Steve Hamilton (95)Seniors, Winner: Ken La Rue (92)Masters, Winner: Jim Calvert (95)

Casting Competition – this month is the Distance Competition.Distance Rules: (No Water Needed!)Make 5 casts (in 5 minutes). While we may not enforce the 5 minute rule, we do want to give everyone achance to cast and still have time to eat dinner. No fly, just a piece of yarn.

Tip:While there are no rules about how many false casts you can make, the fewer youmake, the better your results will be. And don’t rush the cast – give the rod time to load.

Scoring: Scores Will Be Based on the Average of the Longest 4 out of 5 casts.

Casting Competition Guidelines:The monthly competitions, Divisions, and scoring guidelines can now be foundon the club web site at the following link:http://mvff.tripod.com/Reference/MVFF_Casting_Competition_Guidelines.pdf

Remember - although we do keep score and everyone would like to win, the real pointof doing this (other than just to have a good time) is to improve our casting abilities.

Good luck!Jeff Warden
