Dear Friends
Once upon a time, a man approaches Jesus
and asks for his help. On perhaps the only occasion in scripture, the Lord declines to do so. What’s the request, you may wonder? It is recorded in Luke chapter 12; and the request is for Jesus to compel the man’s brother to share his inheritance. The one who has gladly touched lepers when it was forbidden by the Law to do so and considered riskier than a holiday in the swamps of Brazil, refuses to play the part of judge on this occasion (we recall that when a woman was caught in adultery, he was ready to become judge in order to save her). He goes on to tell the parable of the rich fool who decides to build bigger barns for his grain only to die before he can enjoy the fruits of his wealth. It is a parable about the folly of making wealth and material things our priority.
We can assume therefore that his
exasperation with the man demanding assistance extracting a settlement from his brother stems from his recognition that the way to true happiness lies in good relationships not material wealth. We may imagine that this is a brother who is prepared to sacrifice his relationship with his sibling for the sake of money, surely the wrong priority. And which of us does not know of a family relationship that has broken down over arguments over money, more often than not when someone has died? One person will place value on financial worth, while another will place value on sentimental things.
5
On the same basis, the Bible counsels
against going to law. I have heard divorce solicitors themselves argue that couples are best sorting out their differences amicably and arriving at a settlement without engaging a lawyer more than necessary. Similarly, those who have lost loved ones through medical negligence, will testify that they are not interested in money, but an apology or an explanation, something that does justice to the importance of the relationship that has been brought tragically to an end. Money can never achieve this.
The moral of all this, I guess, is that few of us
in the current economic climate can expect to be rich in material things, but we can all be rich in relationships. Jesus of course would encourage us to include our relationship with God in that.
Every blessing, Greg
Quiz Night Advance warning that there will be a repeat of our very popular Quiz Night at the Massey Ferguson Social Club on November 4th.

Harvest This year St Andrews Harvest Appeal, launched jointly with St Andrews School is for Water Aid. We will be supporting The Pupil Pipeline that seeks to get water to Simango Basic School in Zambia, which has 800 pupils but no taps. We are seeking to raise funds for this immensely important project. Please note that each £2 raised provides 1 metre of pipeline. Do give generously. Supper n Chat
Lunch n Chat has been running for many years at St Andrews offering support, companionship and good food on Wednesday lunchtimes to those who have lost loved ones. It has always been well attended and has proved enormously beneficial to many going through difficult times. The group continues to be open to newcomers. Just get in touch for further details.
However, we have become increasingly aware that there are those in need of such support but who cannot make daytime meetings. Hence, we have launched Supper n Chat, which provides light refreshments and an opportunity for anyone struggling with a bereavement to talk to others in a similar situation. The group is running fortnightly on Thursday evenings (although there is no obligation) to come every time.
If you think this might be for you, please contact Rita on 76460744 (for catering purposes) or if you know someone who might appreciate this opportunity, do let them know. The September meetings take place on the 8th and 22nd.

Allesley Green News Treasure Hunt
A small number of us had a fun afternoon looking for clues around the Allesley Green estate. Congratulations to Kam and her two boys who won the £25 meal voucher. Thanks to the Unicorn for kindly providing this. For a small donation, treasure hunt quiz sheets are still available from [email protected] for anyone wanting a challenging couple of hours, entailing a couple of miles of walking. Education Sunday
Education Sunday has moved to a new time of year to coincide with the start of the new school year. Accordingly, St Andrews will be celebrating Education Sunday on Sept 11th at 10am. Our focus this year will be on welcoming new families into the St Andrews community. Invitations are being extended to all reception children at St Andrews School and their parents/grandparents to join us as we celebrate the start of this wonderful journey of learning. We will, at the same time, be praying for all those involved in Education in whatever capacity.

Pantomime Eastern Green Village Hall in conjunction
with St Andrews Church are aiming to produce a traditional family Pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, in January 2017. Preparation for this will start this summer. Anyone in the community who would like to get involved would be most welcome. We are looking for actors, set builders and decorators, costume makers, stage hands, singers, musicians and a stage manager. To volunteer or find out more, contact Greg Smith on 7642 2856 or [email protected]. If interested, please make contact ASAP Churches Together Prayer Walk
Churches in Tile Hill, Eastern Green and Mount Nod will be walking the streets of West Coventry to pray for our area on Sunday Sept 18th from 3pm to 5.30pm. If you wish to join us, please contact Anne Richardson at [email protected] for further information. Eastern Green Village Hall
The Eastern Green Village Hall committee would like to thank everyone who responded to the survey in the July edition of the Link. We appreciate all feedback. It's still not too late to send comments.
Please put them in writing and place them in the box in the village hall foyer

Sponsored Walk On Saturday October 1st, a team from St
Andrews is going to be walking the whole of the Arden Way. Starting in Henley in Arden, we will be walking a circular marathon (26 ½ miles), in order to raise funds for the church as well as Eastern Green resident, Hannah Miller, a young mum, who following surgery last year is now confined to a wheelchair. Our target is to raise £1200, half of which will go to Hannah towards financing a wet room in her adapted home. Anyone wishing to sponsor us should post donations or pledges to the Vicarage marking them ‘sponsored walk’. Eastern Green History Group
For the July event, the Group and visitors
were hosted for a second time by Charles and Gill Holbrook at the old vicarage of St. Andrew's Church. We are very grateful for their kindness and hospitality and also for the help of Fay Gibbs. Mr & Mrs Holbrook have lived there since 1986. Many features of the old vicarage remain and others were described to us. The Revd. Jenkins was its last resident vicar, up to 1971. James Kessel, the artist, lived there in the late 1970s and painted his portrait of Bishop Cuthbert Bardsley on the premises.
11
The church, vicarage and school were completed in 1875 during what is called the Gothic Revival Period by architectural historians. The architect Samuel Sanders Teulon (1812-1873) designed many ecclesiastical and other properties in England during his lifetime. Notice the double course of contrasting blue brick and bath stone dressing as a feature of his work.

EASTERN GREEN WI August is usually a quiet month for many
groups & organisations, but not for Eastern Green WI. We had a party to celebrate our 70th Birthday – our first meeting was in 1946 and we’re still going strong! Our party in Eastern Green Village Hall was attended by more than 50 past & present members and the room looked lovely – clothed tables with sandwiches, cake stands, strawberries and cream and a celebration birthday cake and a glass of bubbly for the toast. After tea we were entertained by Chris Ford (keyboard vocalist) who had us all singing and dancing with music from the 40’s to present day.
Also in August, Mark Hope-Urwin from the British Trust for Ornithology gave an interesting and informative talk at our regular monthly meeting about gardens for birds – he advised us on the best food to put out to attract different species and the ideal habitat to encourage birds into our garden – for more information google www.bto.org.

Eastern Green WI meet at 7.15pm on the first Wednesday of the month at Eastern Green Village Hall – new members and visitors are always welcome - please come and join us. Our programme for the next couple of months is:
7th September, Peter Walters (historian/author) will enlighten us with a talk on the history of Coventry from 1793 to present day.
5th October, Harvest Supper and a workshop on Table Decorations under the guidance of Glen
Duggins. St Andrew’s Buildings Committee
St Andrew’s is subject to an architectural survey and report every five years. The latest report in 2015 indicated there were no major renovation works required at the present time. Much of the future renovation works included normal maintenance items like clearing leaves from gutters. The only items of any significance related to the need for re-pointing of brickwork in various areas and a closer inspection of some areas of stonework.
The buildings committee are also involved in
making improvements where possible. A recent bequest led to a project to propose the glazing of the current porch, the moving of the existing entrance doors to replace the outer wrought iron gates and new glazed entrance doors on the inside. However this has been shelved for the time being on cost grounds and work concentrated on new gutters and drainage, timber treatment and re-pointing of the porch.

The Rev Paul Hardingham looks back on that terrible morning 15 years ago this month…
15th Anniversary of 9/11
Fifteen years ago on 11th Sept 2001 terrorist attacks demolished the Twin Towers in New York killing 2,996 people and injuring over 6,000. Events like 9/11 raise the inevitable question: Why does God allow such suffering to take place?
There are no easy answers to this question! We cannot fully understand why such things happen, although we live in a fallen world, where people make real choices. Yet the Bible affirms that God identifies with our suffering, supremely when Jesus experienced suffering and death! It is on the cross that God knows what it is to lose a loved one in an unjust attack. ‘I could never myself believe in God if it were not for the Cross. In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it?’ (John Stott).
What does this mean? We cannot know why God allows evil and suffering to continue, but we do know that he does love or care for us: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’ (John 3:16). God loved us enough to fully engage with the mess of the world.

Canon David Winter, former Head of Religious Broadcasting at the BBC, muses on the church calendar…
For those who attend to such ecclesiastical details, the Church is now in what it calls the ‘Ordinary Season’. It doesn’t mean it’s going to be bland, boring or predictable in church at the moment (or at any rate, no more than usual), but that following Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, there are no great festivals of the faith to celebrate until we get to Advent, and that’s not till the end of November. For a few months, we can forget the high days and holidays and simply concentrate on, well, being ‘ordinary’.
Personally, I find that rather encouraging. All my life I’ve been a person who enjoys the ordinary. Even on holidays which I’ve enjoyed, I’ve secretly looked forward to getting home and picking up the familiar routine. The dictionary defines ‘ordinary’ as ‘with no distinctive features, normal, usual’. Well, I think everyday, ordinary, normal, usual life still includes plenty of ‘distinctive features’ – surprises, too. To me an impressive feature of the biblical gospels is how normal and ordinary most of it seems. Yes, there are those mighty acts of power which we call miracles, but the setting of them is about as ‘ordinary’ as you could get: a cattle-shed, a lakeside, a fishing boat, a garden, a little girl’s bedroom, a wedding party. It’s in the rich raw world of the ordinary that God does wonderful things, just as it’s in the routine of daily life that kind words are spoken, the sick healed, the sad comforted. I’m sometimes more aware of God in these ‘ordinary’ settings than in the extraordinary splendour of a great cathedral. Long live the ‘ordinary’!
