Art Show for September Patrick HayashiI took up art when I retired from UC in 2004. Most beginners wisely focus on one medium and one subject matter, e.g., watercolor landscapes. I did the opposite. I have ranged far and wide in my explorations. I started by learning to draw in a classical way. But I soon began to make etchings and monotype prints. I work in oil, pastel and watercolor. I paint with melted wax. I paint portraits, landscapes, still lifes and abstracts. I recently created a comic book that I presented at a national conference. I like to think that what I lack in depth, I make up in breadth.

I even discovered a medium of my own - painting with smoke from a wooden match. I made this discovery when I tried to burn a failed drawing over my kitchen sink. Instead of falling into the sink, it fell on the counter and I had to whack it with a spatula to put it out. I then noticed that the burnt pattern on the back was very interesting so I continued to experiment and ended up painting landscapes with smoke.

Three years ago, the US State Department invited me to give master classes on how to paint with smoke in art colleges in Kyrgyzstan. The students listened politely to my carefully prepared lectures and them promptly ignored everything I said and created beautiful images out of smoke. It was a wonderful trip. For this show, I am showing a few older images along with images that I’ve done in the last few months. I hope you enjoy them.
