My name is Dean Huppert, Director of Athletics, K-12 at Mishawaka Schools. I am excited to start this new chapter in my career after 28 years on local television at FOX 28 and WSBT-TV. My goals are clear as we head into the 2017-18 season. Do what’s best for kids and what is in the best interest of Mishawaka Schools.

I grew up in Bremen and played 3 sports. I still play men’s fast pitch softball and have been part of eight Indiana ASA State Championships. I was a girls softball coach for a number of years and have also been a tennis teaching pro in South Bend, Indianapolis and at Notre Dame. Many people don’t realize I’ve lived in Mishawaka for the past 27 years and I have a great love for the school and community.

When I was given the keys on my first day, I looked out over our basketball facility and got a chill when thinking about the possibilities of bringing it to life this winter. I also went out to Steele Stadium and thought about all of

the Cavemen greats who have performed on Tupper Field since 1939. We all know about the volleyball c h a m p i o n s h i p s S t e v e brought us and have seen the smiles as teams bring home state titles in wrestling. We know who we’re talking about when we say Anna, Sharon or Bart. I plan to keep all of the great traditions in tact while leading the Cavemen into the future.

I’ve been given the responsibility of helping 19 varsity sports achieve success. I’ll lean on our experienced head coaches to make that happen. Part of that will be communication. We are working on a new athletic website for MishawakaSchools.com and we’ve implemented Final Forms for our parents and student athletes to register for each sport.

LET’S TRY IT AGAIN! BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE!

Due to the late arrival of the August issue of the Alumni Newsletter, many did not know about the Back to School Supply Drive so we are going to give it another shot! Please remember to bring an item (or two) to the September luncheon and help out our awesome teachers provide the necessary supplies to their students. Many times, teachers will purchase much needed school room supplies out of their own pockets.

As always, our alums are the best when it comes to helping out! Last year MHS alums donated over 100 boxes of crayons, 1,108 pencils, 199 glue sticks, 44 packages of erasers along with calculators, scissors, folders, and so much more! This generosity helped teachers and students start the new school year on the right foot!

The Mishawaka Education Foundation (MEF) along with the partnership of the PTA help students succeed in their classrooms and we can help too. A bin will be provided at the luncheon to drop off your donated item.

We received a grant this summer from the USTA that will help our tennis program grow and we’re working on getting a power house swimming club to give our swimmers the best chance to perform at an elite level.

We hired a new high school basketball coach who has coached LeBron and the McDonald’s All Stars while also coaching the Indiana All Stars. We’ll be paying officials by computer instead of with paper checks and we’re now selling tickets online with the Go Fan app. While we have made our game day program bigger and better and printed it in full color, all of our football games and home basketball games can now be heard on WSBT Radio’s 96.1 FM and AM 960. If you’re out of the area, we’ll stream the games live on the internet with audio and video. We also want to work closely with the band, cheer and dance teams to create exciting events for our fans.

Part of my job will be fundraising and bringing in new business partners. Another segment will be to help our student athletes to appreciate and understand community. We’ll be working with representatives at the school and throughout Mishawaka to have a service initiative called Cavemen Care.

As you can see, we have a lot of moving parts. I’ve always found that if you’re not moving, you’re not growing. Our hope is to give our kids the best chance to succeed while giving them the opportunity to be proud to be a Cavemen not just now, but for years to come as one of our amazing Alumni.

Thank you for this opportunity to be your Director of Athletics. I’ll do my very best to make you proud!

For many , the beginning of August is the official kickoff to shopping for brand new school supplies. And while Target, Walmart and other shopping outlets are swarming with students

picking up their new supplies, you may also see many of our own Mishawaka teachers purchasing supplies for their school room using their personal funds.

There is a way that you can help those teachers be successful!

Starting mid-September, the MEF will post on their new website a “wish list” of school supplies and equipment that teachers most often request to help supplement necessary items for a successful teaching environment.

Contributions and donations in any amount for specific requests can be made through the secure website page and be a donor for making Mishawaka students effective during their educational journey.

Be sure to check out the new website after September 15 and “give the gift of a wish!”

The MEF will be hosting their annual silent auction/dinner fund raiser in October and are in search of auction items.

Do you have a service or talent that you would like to donate? Do you have tickets to a sporting event or memorabilia that would be special to a sport’s fanatic? Do you have a timeshare you don’t use?

This annual event is the largest MEF fund raiser that provides the majority of dollars to fund the Mishawaka Promise. The Mishawaka Promise is in its third year to reach their goal of $2.5 million.

Alums from Washington State to Florida, from New York to California can donate! All items will be available online so all can participate and outbid your classmate.

All donations are tax deductible. Please consider a donation for the auction. For more information and details, please contact Jane (Zimmerman) Wright ‘68 at [email protected].
