Adult Learner Week was celebrated throughout the country last week ( 4 to 10 September

2017). The class at Anglican Friendship Centre celebrated their learning journey by mak-

ing cards.

Exchanging Cards & Culture

Every week is a celebration of adult

learning at the Anglican Friendship Cen-

tre ELG. Our learners and volunteers all

bring an incredible mix of experience

and knowledge to our learning environ-

ment. Recently, we discussed

“feelings” and some key phrases to use

as comfort and/or encouragement. As a follow-on lesson, we made cards and

wrote messages to each other. The cards were exchanged and in small groups

some of our learners shared how empathy, sympathy, gratitude etc. are shown

in their culture – i.e. not with greeting cards. This two-way sharing and under-

standing between learners, volunteers and teachers is a wonderful part of adult

learning because we recognise that every person has something to bring to the

group. We’re learning together and the learning journey sure doesn’t stop just

because our hair is getting a bit whiter. By Vanessa Curtis

Palmerston North

Kia Ora and Hello,

Spring is here and hopefully brings warmer days! A lot has happened since we sent out the last newsletter. Amongst other

things, we are excited to welcome Vanessa Curtis, Helen van den Ende, Mary Legg, Remuuna Tar May and Edward Nguyen

to the teaching team in term 3. Congratulations to Chuda and Khina for the safe arrival of their second baby son.

Our Centre has started an ESOL Intensive class beginning in Term 3 and Catherine Taylor is teaching the class. We were

sad to farewell Dianne Fountaine Cody last term. We welcome Deborah Rasmussen joining the teaching team in the Work

Talk programme.

Recently the Centre has the opportunity to contribute to the plan and survey of a new initiative by Ministry of Business, Innova-

tion and Enterprises (MBIE) and Palmerston North City Council. The Welcoming Communities is a new initiative to welcome

new comers to Palmerston North. It is great to be involved in this pilot as the voluntary home tutoring job that you do plays a

significant part in welcoming new comers and providing a service that helps in their settlement in NZ.

A huge thank you to all the home tutors who returned their Tutor Surveys on time and congratulations to Bonnie Dewart for winning the $50 petrol voucher!

All current Home Tutors will have received, by email, a copy of the latest Record of Learning. I’m sure you will be finding it very ‘user friendly’ with only two sections requiring your comments about what your learner is achieving after session 6 and again after session 12. Please try to get these RoL’s completed as soon as possible. As I indicated in an earlier email, English Language Partners expect every home tutor to complete a minimum of two RoL’s a year. Some of you even manage to com-plete 3 or 4 in a year and that’s fantastic!

A message to all our new Home Tutors who are working on Assignment 4 with their learners – please try to complete your 12

sessions as soon as possible, I really want to see you all achieve your Certificates in ESOL Home Tutoring.

Keep up the great work and Happy Tutoring!

With warm wishes, Jess, Sue and Kattarin

From the team

The theme Kia ora te reo Māori was chosen to celebrate New Zealand’s indigenous greeting, and also as the words ‘Kia Ora’ are an exact description of the intent of the new partnerships for te reo Māori revital-isation between the Crown and Māori under the new Māori Language Act 2016.

Katie and Esther from the Westpac Bank visited the mums and tots class in Roslyn School to talk about scamming in the

banking environment. Recently a learner from the class was conned $650 from her bank account . The workshop helped

the learners to understand how credit card fraud happened and the measure they could take to prevent scammers from

taking their money. The workshop was so successful that the pair were invited to talk to other ELP classes. Thank you

Katie and Esther.

Deborah and her class had a celebration at the end of the Eldercare Course. Learners learnt about the language and com-

munication used in aged care in New Zealand, basic legal rights of our elderly and staff, how to deal with our elderly in elder-

care settings and about what goes on in an elderly care environment. Learners had two terms to learn the theory and visit-

ed the Peppertree Rest-homes for practical experience. Congratulations to Gauri and Tanka in securing a job at the rest-

homes in Palmerston North and wishing some of you the very best in pursuing further studies in the subject.

Angel Kwan

Congratulation to Angel Kwan and the team at

Global Parents NZ for successfully running the

Global Passport Festival during the school holi-

day last term! School aged children had 2

months to complete 5 tasks—join 2 cultural

activities, meet two new friends and take the

world quiz. Many children meet new friends

and learned about different food from different

countries in the world.

Well done Angel and team!

Learner’s Corner - Let’s Get Physical

English Language Partners Page 4

All the women in the ESOL Literacy classes

were physically challenged for 3 days in

the Women Self Defence class. They

learnt about kicking, punching, stomping,

elbowing, kneeing and shouting. They

had also learned about the relevant anato-

my of the body parts to target should they

find themselves in the situation. Other

ways were also demonstrated in the train-

ing to protect themselves. Thank you

Julie Goldingham from Wahine Toa for

facilitating the course. All participants

received a certificate after the 3 days

training.

Learner’s Corner - Let’s Go Shopping at the Trade Aid Shop

"Adult Learners week was introduced with a visit from Trade Aid where we heard about the value of hand made products. This provided the platform to discuss the different skills and hobbies our learners have. They were able to share how they applied their skills in their home countries. Most of our Afghani learners are very crafty and able to hand make rugs, bags, clothes and many more items that require weaving and knitting. We were moved by their stories about making rugs with their friends and family members, yet, having to leave it all behind. These women are full of knowledge when it comes to creating art with their hands and pieces of fabrics. Our learners from Bhutan and Myanmar also shared about their different crafts from their home countries. Most of them used to make fishing nets and different types of baskets for use in their daily lifestyle. We were able to encourage all of our learners to seek ways to bring back the many skills they have and put them into practice here in New Zealand.” By Lizzie Schwamm

Learner’s corner - 2017 Election

Page 5 English Language Partners

It’s Election time. Come 23 September 2017, New Zealand is having a general election. The Registrar of Electors from the

Electoral Commission gave a talk to the learners on Wednesday the 23rd of August. For some learners it is the first time that

they participate in the election process. They had learnt about the importance of enrolling to vote so that they have their say

on the issues that affect them, their friends and family and their voice is heard. They had an interactive activity identifying

the local candidates and the leaders of the political parties. The Mums and Tots class came first answering all the questions

correctly in the political quiz session. All learners that participated in this workshop had enrolled to vote in this Election.

Special thanks to Moana Kaka from the Electoral Commission for the election workshop.

Karen Wrist Tying Ceremony:

The Karen community celebrated the Wrist tying ceremony on Saturday

the 19th of August 2017. This tradition was past down through genera-

tions by their ancestors. By tying white thread together while praying,

the action hopes to ward off darkness and fear and to return to light.

There were seven symbolic items in the celebration and each item was

represented as follows:

1.Water: refresh, cleansing and forgiveness

2. Thread: Light

3. Rice: Unity

4. Sticky Rice: Togetherness

5. Banana: Family duty and

loyalty

6. Flower: Growth

7. Sugarcane: Kindness

Po Pae , Mu Taw and Pa Htoo, the elders of the Karen

community performed the wrist tying ceremony on the

young people.

Mu Taw with her beautiful hand made

costume and head gear.

Pa Kye Nay sang a song about the wrist tying tradi-

tion. He made the instrument out of wood and

strings.

We welcome the Rohingya community to Palmer-

ston North early this year. Let’s hope that the

current situation in the Rakhine State of Myanmar

is resolved and peace is restored.

Tutor Workshop– Speaking Skills and Activities

English Language Partners Page 8

August Workshop: ‘Speaking Skills and Activities’

facilitated by Dana Taylor

On Saturday 19 August Dana Tay-

lor lead a very interactive tutor

workshop focused on the use of

visual techniques to elicit, teach,

and practise new language in con-

trolled (e.g., drilling, simple ques-

tioning) and less-controlled (e.g.,

conversation and dialogue) activi-

ties. This workshop was aimed at low beginner and pre

-literate learners and was therefore very relevant for

many of our home tutors. It was great to see everyone

getting involved in the activities and then heading

home with some fantastic new ideas to use with their

learners. Our aim at every workshop is for you to learn

something new that is useful to use with your learners

and to meet and mingle with other home tutors – I feel

confident this workshop definitely achieved that goal!
