COVER STORY | DOOSAN

How do you get the best value from your fork lift truck fleet? It may be simpler than you think says Paul Watson, UK Sales Director, Doosan.

FIVE SIMPLE STEPS TO LIFT TRUCK VALUE

M any companies operate mixed fleets that have grown organically over the years, replacing units as they come to end of

life – or contract – simply by taking the lowest cost option. Others may choose a familiar brand and then stick with it almost out of habit, without any real compulsion to search for value over time.

But markets change, and so should buyers. Looking around for new options can offer important value enriching opportunities. Here we set out five simple steps to consider when searching out value for your forklift fleet:

1. PERFORMANCEWhether you are looking for robust diesel counterbalance trucks for heavy yard duties or durable battery powered trucks for extended shifts within the warehouse, reliable performance is a primary requirement. Simply put, the trucks must have performance designed in – well-engineered products that are built for the task but without unnecessary add-ons and extras that can so easily go wrong.

Safety rather than speed is now the overriding consideration. Speed limiters, access control and fleet management systems are the new ‘must haves’ for buyers, replacing the traditional focus on performance statistics.

Nowadays, examples of value enhancing performance are hard to find. However, Doosan’s standard diesel and electric ‘feature rich’ counterbalance models include the lift truck maker’s industry leading oil-cooled disc brake system. Manufactured as completely sealed units the system is protected against outside elements, such as water, dust, dirt, shrink wrap and metal banding – ensuring top-rate braking performance for enhanced safety and increased productivity.

This low-maintenance, heavy-duty braking system provides increased uptime and reduced running costs when compared with conventional shoe brakes.

As Mike Cholmondley, transport manager at builders merchant, Huws Gray, points out: “We like the simple, no-nonsense design and construction of the Doosan truck – no unnecessarily complex electronics that can go wrong. It’s really well suited to the builder’s yard environment and has large drive wheels that are great for any uneven surfaces.”

2. SERVICE SUPPORT Ensuring uptime for each and every truck is critical to any busy operation. Having easily accessible and reliable service support, to regularly maintain vehicles and be there quickly when a truck goes down, can make all the difference to on-site performance,

productivity and customer service. Trucks not only need to be designed and built to be easily serviced, but the manufacturer’s service support network must be inherently responsive – and that means a guaranteed service engineer call out time.

Doosan has over 550 engineers on the road at any one time, enabling the company to issue a guarantee that an engineer will be on site within four hours.

Fast and easy access to parts is a fundamental support function – waiting for parts to arrive from a distant European parts store can cause delay and increase down-time. In recent months Doosan’s UK Parts Distribution Centre has increased its capacity by 50%, allowing the business to carry in excess of £1m worth of stock for next-day delivery. With a 4.30pm cut-off for orders – one of the latest in the industry – Doosan customers get the best possible support from within the UK.

A further enhancement to Doosan’s service support operation is the company’s Fleet Management System, which enables customers to access up-to-the-moment information on their equipment fleet, log breakdowns on a 24/7 basis and access maintenance records, account details and other vital information. Importantly, live data is fed through the engineer’s tablet making site visits simpler, with all maintenance records updated in real-time.

3. SAFETY Of course, above all else, on site safety has to be the highest priority. Shockingly, statistics released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that 24% of all workplace transport injuries in the UK are related to fork lift trucks. There are around 2,000 accidents every year of which, usually, seven are fatal. Failure to maintain a safe working environment can have dire legal consequences for a business and its directors, so getting the best value from a truck in terms of safety is absolutely essential.

At Doosan the wellbeing of the driver and the safety of those sharing the same workspace is a primary focus for the company’s design engineers. Their industry-leading safety innovations have gained Doosan many plaudits from the industry, including winning the Fork Lift Truck Association’s highly coveted Award for Safety Excellence over three consecutive years – for its operator sensing system, an inbuilt auto-slow down function, and a rear grab handle & horn.

Health & safety managers are taking a strong interest in the automatic electric parking brake on Doosan’s latest 7-Series electric range.

Lee Allen, works manager at Michelmersh Brick’s Charnwood site, advocates the use of Doosan vehicles throughout the manufacturing process. Every truck is fi tted with Doosan’s in-cab Operator Safety System (OSS). The trucks are immobilised until a sensor in the seat detects the driver’s weight and the seatbelt is fully secured. In addition, white-noise reversing bleepers are also fi tted for pedestrian safety.

“All the trucks have hydraulic accumulators fi tted to reduce bumps and improve stability, making them perfect for the job of handling our products safely and with care,” said Lee Allen. “The trucks are being used seven days a week and we wanted good, honest machines that could take a bit of a hammering – we can’t fault them.”

4. ENVIRONMENTThe writing is on the wall for diesel and petrol cars, and there can be little doubt that this trend will be

refl ected across industry too as traditional users of diesel forklift trucks move to electric powered vehicles. The shift will be gradual and there will be applications where the sheer power of diesel will still be required, but electric counterbalance trucks are already fully capable of working outside, eight hours a day in dirty and dusty environments, such as builders yards and industrial sites. In many instances, electric trucks are out-performing their diesel powered equivalents and the cost of ownership can be signifi cantly less, making them a very attractive option. Really, it just requires a change of mind-set.

Last year Doosan launched a range of 48v electric trucks up to two tonnes and earlier this year we launched an 80v range from 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes. In 2018 we will be revamping the fi ve tonne electric series and we are looking at six, seven and eight tonne electrics models in the near future. In fact, most of our R&D resources are going into electric powered

vehicles. Perhaps that’s a clear enough pointer for the future.

However, in the meantime, diesel power will still prevail. And buyers of diesel trucks will continue to be told by some fork lift truck manufacturers that they need a truck fi tted with a diesel particulate fi lter (DPF) to comply with the latest EU regulations on emissions – with all the hassle, cost and downtime of running a regeneration cycle on the fi lter every 25 hours or so. But in most cases, that is not the case. There are forklifts on the market with diesel engines

that do not require DPFs. There are only three fork lift truck manufacturers

who have diesel engines on the market that do not require diesel particulate fi lters to comply with Euro-Stage IIIB and Stage IV standards. Two of them can only offer solutions in limited product ranges. The other, Doosan, has a full range from 2.0-tonne capacity across all diesel powered counterbalance trucks up to 25–tonnes.

Doosan’s revolutionary approach to the new emissions challenge was to anticipate the legislation by developing a diesel engine specifi cally for non-road use – produced ‘in-house’ by Doosan’s Infracore Engine Division. The result was a groundbreaking new design, the G2, created for the specifi c needs of

industrial applications – a concept far removed from the ‘sticking plaster’ approach taken by most fork lift truck manufacturers with their poorly adapted diesel engine formats borrowed from the automotive sector.

In September 2014, Doosan’s award-winning ‘DPF-free’ G2 engine was introduced to the market bringing lower fuel consumption, longer maintenance intervals and maintenance-free after-treatment systems – providing best-in-class performance on fuel economy and emissions while exceeding all Euro Stage lllB and Stage IV legislation.

So, performance, fuel economy and emissions compliance can all be attained from a new diesel fork lift truck without the need to endure the frustrations, downtime and costs associated with DPF regeneration.

5. BRAND VALUESWhether looking to invest in a single fork lift truck or a whole fl eet of vehicles, confi dence in the brand is paramount. Questions that should be asked are: Has the manufacturer the reputation, fi nancial backing and engineering know-how to support your organisation and its business objectives? Does the supplier have the scale to deliver a comprehensive product offering at a competitive price? Is the brand active in developing innovative solutions, and is it investing in future technologies? Ultimately, is the brand geared-up to delivering long-term value?

ABILITY TO DELIVERDoosan Industrial Vehicles is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of forklift trucks. As an important part of the $21 bn global Doosan Group – a conglomerate with a 120-year history – the fork lift truck division has the extensive resources necessary to dedicate to the pursuit of excellence in product design, performance, ergonomics, energy and importantly, safety. This capability has been successfully translated into practical design innovations across Doosan’s range of over 200 models of counterbalance, reach and warehouse trucks, with capacities spanning 1.3 to 25 tonnes, and over power sources of electric, gas and diesel.

FORK LIFT TRUCKS | CUSTOMER SERVICE

BUILDBASE GOES FOR MECHANICAL MUSCLE Buildbase is one of the UK’s fastest growing builders merchants with more than 165 branches nationwide. The building supplies company has expanded its service support for its forklift truck fleet through Rushlift, a UK subsidiary of Doosan Industrial Vehicles.

E xcellence in customer service, with high product availability and fast delivery, is a corner stone of the company’s business strategy. In

the building merchants sector that means having the mechanical muscle to handle the heavy materials and products traded on a daily basis. Fast and efficient unloading and loading of vehicles, along with careful lifting and placement of heavy goods, such as bricks, blocks and timber, are critical activities that place a huge onus on the smooth operation of the forklift truck fleet.

“We need good, reliable, robust forklift trucks with fast service back-up,” says Fraser Boyd, transport operations manager at Buildbase. Over the last two years, the building supplies company has expanded its service support for its forklift truck fleet through Rushlift, a UK subsidiary of Doosan Industrial Vehicles.

MEETING SERVICE REQUIREMENTS“Ensuring the uptime of our fork lift trucks is absolutely essential to the efficient running of our sites. So having reliable and fast service back-up and support, across all our sites, requires a service organisation that can provide nationwide coverage – even to really outlying areas such as the Highlands and the Shetland Islands,” he says. “Rushlift accommodate all our service requirements. They outsource some services in the most far-reaching areas, but importantly, they are able to facilitate this for us, giving us just one point of contact. With any breakdowns or servicing needs they just make it happen, which takes a big burden off of our shoulders.”

‘NO FRILLS’ CAPABILITYThe relationship with Rushlift and Doosan has grown steadily and in 2016 an order was placed for 30 new Doosan 3 tonne and 3.3 tonne diesel powered counterbalance trucks for several Buildbase sites. The standard D30S-5 and D33S-5 Doosan models offered the tough, ‘no frills’ capability Buildbase was looking for. “We wanted a robust piece of kit that is easy to maintain – nothing too complicated or full of electronics that are going to keep breaking down every few days,” says Fraser Boyd.

‘FEATURE RICH’ MODELSDoosan’s standard ‘feature-rich’ models include the lift truck maker’s industry leading oil-cooled disc brake system – perfect for the dust and grit of builders merchants yards. Manufactured as completely sealed units the system is protected

against outside elements, such as water, dust, dirt, shrink wrap and metal banding - ensuring top-rate braking performance, for enhanced safety and increased productivity.

This low-maintenance, heavy-duty braking system provides increased uptime and reduced running costs when compared with conventional shoe or drum brakes.

In addition to the standard specification, the trucks supplied to Buildbase were fitted with front, overhead and rear screens, speed limiters for safety, rear grip handles for driver comfort when reversing, a rear mounted tool tray, steel under panels for extra protection on rough ground, and on the 3.3 tonne models, brick clamps for palletless handling and loading.

“We trialled competing brands at our Nottingham and Leicester branches for a couple of weeks and the feedback on the Doosan trucks was really positive,” says Fraser Boyd. “The drivers liked the smooth operation of the levers and the ease of raising and lowering the forks. And the Doosan trucks scored highly on driver comfort, stability, safety and visibility through the forks too – which were all important points for us.”

Parts back up also played a significant role in securing the deal. “The Doosan parts centre in Northampton really made an impression. They keep a good stock of spares and they can dispatch overnight for parts delivery within 24hrs, which offers great security. No one else seemed to want to

talk about parts, but Rushlift showed us exactly how the centre works,” he says.

DESIGNED-IN SERVICEABILITYOne additional benefit of choosing Rushlift was the capability to supply and support Bobcat tele-handlers, which are also owned and manufactured by Doosan, as well as specialist products manufactured by Combilift.

Overall, it was the designed-in serviceability of the Doosan product, its on-site performance and the lifetime cost of the truck that counted. Fraser Boyd concludes: “Compared to other manufacturers, we’ve seen that the whole-life servicing costs could be significantly reduced due to the way the Doosan truck has been engineered and designed. The whole package was there for us – and with the backing of Rushlift’s nationwide servicing, it ticked all the boxes.”
