How to Handle Bad Publicity on Social
Media
From the National Federation of Independent Busi-
ness, August 2017
“While it might seem like the worst possible sce-
nario, it’s actually one of the easiest to recover and
move on from. Angry and unsatisfied customers
are often the most vocal, and tend to be faster than
happy customers to take to social media. However,
if you handle online complaints properly and pro-
fessionally, you can build more trust and credibility
for your brand.
First, assess the severity and determine whether it’s
from an unhappy customer, a frequent complainer,
or someone trying to be funny, generate attention,
or get something for free. It it’s from a legitimate
unhappy customer or a frequent complainer (and
what they’ve posted is true or accurate), follow up
immediately and explain what’s being done to re-
solve the issue.
If possible—and this is only for serious issues—
politely make an effort to continue the conversation
directly, in person. The offer of privacy helps when
trying to take public attacks and complaints offline.
In the event someone posts something inaccurate,
politely reply with the correct information and be
sure to mention you’re available for any further
questions or concerns. Avoid being argumentative,
and take the time to craft the right response.
If the comment was posted by someone who does-
n't’ appear to be acting maliciously but is attempt-
ing to get shares, likes, or attention with a bad re-
view, don’t engage. Continue to monitor the con-
versation closely so you can step in if necessary.
Remember not to limit your online interactions with
reviews to unhappy customers. If a customer posts
a great review of your products or services, thank
them and share their feedback if appropriate.”

Sponsor a Business after Hours
Business after Hours is held quarterly in the months of
February, May, August and November from 5:30-7pm
and attended by chamber members, customers of spon-
soring business(es), as well as city county officials. It
is an environment for local business people to kick
back with some small bites and beverages in a casual,
relaxed atmosphere after normal business hours. The
sponsoring chamber business has the opportunity to
give a brief presentation about its business and intro-
duce its staff.
Call the Lockhart Chamber at 512-398-2818 for
