PARKLAND CARES

[email protected]. Parkland Cares Calgary 403-863-9927

Parkland Cares is a community-based organization of families and neighbours committed to helping others.

A big thank-you to all the young entrepreneurs that came out and showcased their treats, products and art-work at the Parkland Cares Kids Market. These amazing kids donated 50% of their proceeds to our Backpacks for Kids Campaign. We raised $192. These funds will be used to purchase backpacks and supplies. WOW!

September 8th is the next Parkland Neighborhood Clean-up day. We are looking for a few volunteers to help community members unload items and manage traffic. Please contact us if you can help.

The month of September we will be collecting clean and gently used fall/winter clothing for the Clothing Drive at Deer Park United Church. There will be a dona-tion bin at Park96. These donations go to families that might otherwise struggle to afford warm winter cloth-ing for themselves and their children.

Please contact us if you have ideas for ways to encour-age strong community connections, or if you would like to help us with any of our planned events.

Our next planning meetings are Tuesday Septem-ber 11th and November 13th at 7:15 at Park96, we would love to see you there.

City-Supported Community Cleanups

YOUR CITY OF CALGARY

Once again, it’s time to comb through your garage, sur-vey your off-site storage locker and purge your garden shed of that never-used stuff that has been collecting dust for the past decade. Save yourself a trip to the landfill by visiting one of the Community Cleanup events taking place across Calgary throughout the summer and early fall.

These popular events are hosted by community associa-tions with support from Calgary Community Standards and Waste & Recycling at The City. Check calgary.ca/cleanup for a list of cleanup events. You can also check your community association website for full details on the Community Cleanup in your area.

The following items are not permitted at the Cleanup events:•Car batteries•Glass (e.g. window panes, glass table tops)•Household appliances with Freon (e.g. refrigerators,

freezers)•Microwaves•Liquids (e.g. cooking oils)•Large metal items (e.g. lawnmowers, barbeques)•Railway ties•Sod or dirt•Household hazardous waste (see calgary.ca for a list of

household hazardous waste drop-off locations)

Yard waste is accepted for composting. The City en-courages residents to check for what can be recycled (visit calgary.ca/whatgoeswhere). The City’s Waste & Recycling collection is provided free of charge; however some community associations may provide additional services that require a fee.

Some communities may also organize a “free store” where you can drop off and select items for donations free of charge. Check your community association web-site for details.

PARKLAND NEWS & REVIEWS

Book, restaurant, and movie reviews by Parkland News readers. Parkland News welcomes your contributions. Please send book, movie and restaurant reviews, and neighbourhood announcements and photographs to [email protected].

The Equalizer 2Like last month, I am reviewing a movie that is a sequel; this time it’s the Equalizer 2. This movie stars Denzel Washington returning as Robert McCall, a retired DIA agent. Also making a return are Bill Pulman as Brian Plummer and Melissa Leo as Susan Plummer.

When researching this movie, I learned it was filmed in Massachusetts. The topography plays a starring role at the end of this movie.

Robert works now as a Lyft driver (think Uber). As well as driving, he also corrects injustices done to others, in-cluding a young girl who has been sexually assaulted, and a Holocaust survivor.

Robert lives in an eclectic neighbourhood in Boston and has an eclectic group of friends. One is a young man, Miles Whitaker, played by Aston Sanders. Miles has lots of artistic talent but a poor choice of friends. Robert en-lists Miles to repaint a vandalized mural on his building. Miles is at a crossroads in his life; he can either continue his education or fall prey to life on the streets. Robert, again righting wrongs, follows Miles and confronts him when he joins his friends.

Miles plays a continuing role in this film, as do Bill and Susan Plummer. It is through Susan’s conversations with Robert that we learn his wife has passed away. Susan is also a DIA operative and is killed while on duty. Her death propels Robert to investigate and connects him with another DIA operative, Dave York, played by Pedro Pascal.

Alas, not all is as it appears, and there is more to Dave York than meets the eye. I won’t spoil the storyline, so I will be brief. As Robert’s investigation unfolds, he takes refuge at his wife’s former bakery. It is at this point that the rugged terrain of the east coast of Massachusetts plays a part, when Robert is being chased by the bad guys (who used to be good guys) during a terrible east coast storm.

I think this movie is a notch above the typical revenge movie; the relationships between the characters is given more than a perfunctory glance. And I’m glad to report that all wrongs get righted in the end! It’s a good movie with lots of action and a good ending.

How to be a Good Listenerby Nancy Bergeron, Registered Provisional Psychologist

One of humanity’s deepest needs is to be heard. However, many of us fail to realize that ‘active’ listening requires in-tention and practice. Because listening is quiet and inter-nal, it’s easy to overlook. Listening well is worthy of both our attention and effort. Do you have what it takes to truly be a great listener?

InterestHumans are remarkable. Some humans are so wonderfully different and even eccentric. It is a gift to be invited to hear what other human beings have to say, in order to expand our own worldviews and understanding of others. Make an effort to be truly interested in what other humans have to say.

ActiveListening is active. When we are spoken to, we need to ac-tively receive the message. This requires us to look at the person speaking, possibly give a smile, nod or just lean in a bit. Give a few verbal cues that you are engaged such as a yes, mmm, or un-huh. We need to concentrate to remain active in listening as we have a tendency to let our mind drift or start thinking about what we want to say next.

VulnerabilityWhen a someone shares a personal experience, it requires vulnerability. Likewise, truly listening to their experience places us in an equally vulnerable position. To really listen to another is to open ourselves up to their perspective and to challenge our assumptions and understandings. When we really listen, our minds should open and this may en-able a shift in perspective. This can allow us to learn some-thing new about ourselves.

PresentTry not to bring our own experience into theirs. This will take away from their experience by tagging ours on too quickly. We want to fully receive the valued gift of someone else’s experience and emotion. Although we may relate to their experience, we wouldn’t want to take away from the understanding of that person or situation. We can respond once they finish. This allows us all to be in the present.

GraciousNo matter what a person’s circumstance or station in life, do not judge them. Instead, listen with care and graciousness. When you open your ears, open your heart too. Remember that when someone opens up, it may be all they have to give, those of us listening need to simply receive.

Parkland Community Centre Water Main Repair UpdateDuring the June 13, 2018 Parkland Community Centre Annual General Meeting, Parkland Residents voted to approve the Special Resolutions which read:•Special Resolution – To use Park 96 reserve funds in

an amount up to $87,000 for the water service piping replacement and main parking lot expansions and im-provements.

•Special Resolution Rationale – The Piping from the City water main to the main building connection re-quires replacement. The Park’s maintenance staff has experienced significant issues with debris collecting in the water distribution system throughout the Park for several years. Changes to the water distribution system in the past have revealed that the existing ductile iron piping is deteriorating and requires replacement. The Park wishes to replace the existing piping before a fail-ure occurs that would disrupt the operation of, and pos-sibly damage the Park’s facilities. The current line is 40 plus years old and is approximately 45 meters in length. •A Community Facility Enhancement Project grant has

been applied for, which could cover up to 50% of the Water Service Piping replacement project.

This notice is being written on Friday, August 3. At this moment the Park predicts this will impact the Park start-ing mid-September for approximately 1 week. The proj-ect involves the water being turned off, a trench across the width of the parking lot and a trench inside the Park from the gate to the building.

This may involve a brief Park and/or parking lot closure and safety fencing around the excavation. These deci-sions will be made closer to the start date. An email will be sent to Parkland Residents with the details once they are established. HOME GARDENING WITH BARBARA

Garden Folklore

Some people follow the Farmer’s Almanac; some re-member truths told by a grandmother. Some sayings have an origin in another country and time, or time unknown. It can be interesting to explore these max-ims and see how they work for us here in the Alberta chinook belt.

“March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.”This saying originated in England and involves more wishful thinking than actual prediction in our part of the world. A cold blustery March should end with nice spring weather. Maybe in England; rarely in Calgary. Some people think it is related to the Astrological cal-endar, but Leo (the lion) lives in summer, and Pisces (the fish) in Feb./Mar., so it doesn’t work.

“April showers bring May flowers.”Of course, they do. The gentle rains and snows of April are the best ones for soaking into the soil as the ground should now be thawed and receptive. All that drama in March just runs into the storm drains.

“A dry August and warm does the harvest no harm.” Makes sense to let the sun ripen the grain crops. Mother Nature is in charge of this.

“In October, dung your fields and your land; its wealth will yield.” We don’t say dung that often nowadays, but we do love our compost, don’t we? The best time to amend your soil is in the fall, giving the soil and compost time to marry over the winter. While on the topic of compost, it is only as good as the material put into it. If you make your own, you know that a whole buffet of kitchen scraps, lawn clippings, leaves, prunings, coffee grounds, tea leaves and eggshells will give a healthy mix. If you choose to buy it in bags, try to find compost that is made locally as it is most likely to complement our alkaline soil. Manure

can be good too, but only if aged, no longer stinky and liable to burn. It is worth growing COMFREY just to add its powerful nutrients to your compost. Remember, you are feeding the soil, not the plants.

“On the 1st of November, if the weather be clear, an end to the sowing you do for the year.”I suspect this little item also came from Britain, so we would be wise to adjust this to October for our climate. Spinach, lettuce, bulbs like tulips and garlic are all best planted in the fall. You can copy Mother Nature and just scatter the lettuce seed on the ground and let the snow sink it in.

“One for the rook, one for the crow, one to rot and one to grow.”I am not sure if we have rooks here, but we definitely have crows and lots of other critters who find our spring vegetable seeds tasty. Therefore, sow four seeds for ev-ery plant you need, particularly peas. If the critters and the rot don’t get them, you can always thin them out.

“The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago.”Yes, true enough, but the second-best time to plant a tree is NOW. A few tips: Do not plant deep; plant at the same depth it was in the pot. Dig a nice big hole, but do not fill with potting soil; put back the soil you took out in the first place. The little tree has to learn to live where it is put, not in an artificial environment. Do not fertil-ize! You want roots, not leaves, so definitely no nitrogen. Top dress with compost, if you must. And water deeply, of course, and often, particularly if Mother Nature is busy elsewhere.

I must give credit to Janet Melrose for much of this infor-mation as she does a fine job of presentations here and there around town. Watch for her—she is full of wisdom and highly entertaining.

September is for many the start of new beginnings for school, work, and play. However, as leaves begin to change and days become shorter, there are still many opportun-ities to enjoy the great outdoors and give back. In our very own Fish Creek Provincial Park, the Friends of Fish Creek and Bow Valley Ranche Restoration Society thrive on volun-teers. Both FFC and BVR enhance visitor experience in the park and increase our connection with history and nature. “Friends” are hosting “A Taste of Autumn” fundraiser on Sep-tember 28th and the BVR holds an annual fall cleanup of the Artisan Gardens. The familiar saying, “many hands make light work” rings true for both volunteering and fundrais-ing.

Building community connections and resiliency was an im-portant part of my previous corporate life and something I am still passionate about while serving in public life. One of my favourite corporate-community partnerships is the Trico Centre. The Trico Centre, which I am personally hon-oured to have helped establish, is holding its 35th Anniver-sary celebration complete with live entertainment and a tradeshow on Saturday September 8th from 12-5pm. This community-owned recreation centre boasts 33 community partnerships that continually fill the needs of the people it serves. The Trico Centre offers a variety of activities for all ages and is where my children learned to skate and swim. For those 55+, I would recommend the FLC Senior’s Club which is based out of the Trico Centre. FLC Seniors is the lar-gest seniors’ club in Western Canada and offers a wide range of programming. Their mission is “to enhance the positive qualities of our membership and create a nurturing, stable environment which encourages seniors to continue to be active, respected and vital members of their community.” For more information, please visit www.flcseniors.ca.

I look forward to continuing my MLA Café series this fall. Please join me for conversation and special guest speak-ers on Seniors Issues on Tuesday, September 4th from 2-4 pm and Community Recreation Facilities Friday, September 28th from 10-11:30 am. Your feedback and insights assist me to best represent you in the Legislature. Remember, my door is always open—call or email my office to book an ap-pointment at 403-278-4444 or [email protected]. Best wishes for a glorious Fall season!
