TEACHER OF THE MONTH – TRUPTI MA’AM

Being a student of life...

Life, a teacher

“Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it. “

Albert Einstein What is said above is true, what really matters more, is the enthusiasm to learn. Age is never a hurdle in learning.

Just imagine the world, if few great people like APJ Abdul Kalam or Steve Jobs would have stopped learning altogether! “Where would the world be?” If they said I won’t learn anything except what is given in my textbook; they wouldn’t

have ever created such remarkable progress in their respective lives. Textbooks contain only a limited amount of information that one can have. You always need to learn what’s beyond that.

No matter what phase of life you are in at the moment, you can always learn something new. By learning, one educates oneself and also broadens one’s own horizon. Education is not limited to school going kids or college going youth.

Education helps one in conquering major battles in life. It impacts the way we speak, express and think, in short, our whole personality. Education is a peaceful weapon, created to kill all the wrong doings in this world. That is why it is

very important for a person to be a learner throughout his/her life.

“Education is not preparation of life; education is life itself” John Dewey

Have you ever thought that, a person as old as a grandmother can also learn from a kid? My grandmother once told me, that when I was a kid, she got to learn a very important lesson from me, a lesson to be unbiased to people of any caste. I used to play with my brother, and also with the maid’s son. Being a kid, I never realized the caste system. Now, at this

age, it amuses me, the way my grandmother looked at that matter. She was indeed a learner!!

By learning, I mean all kinds of linguistic, logical, interpersonal and intrapersonal learning. A person is called a good learner, if he tries to learn from the smallest of things or situations. For example, if one is standing on the road, he

should learn from the roads. He should learn that no matter how harsh they are, they will still take you to your destina-tion.

We all are students when in a school. Some might be having more knowledge, some being more creative, while some with more experience. Whatever element one is good at, he/she still seeks to improve on it. In a way, we all are learn-

ing. Learning keeps one going.

As said by Albert Einstein, “Once you stop learning, you start dying”. The school of life doesn’t have any teachers. It conducts its own tests and teaches you lessons through it. Nobody has an option to flunk or to copy. It has planned different papers for each one. No matter what age level you are at, life always

has something new to show you, surprise you, and teach you.

Let us all learn, learn and learn...

“Lifelong learners” as IB says.

GRADE 3 SEEN IN ACTION

In connection to the unit Citizenship, the students of grade 3 presented an act in which they explained the re-sponsibilities of being good citizens. They explained the responsibilities of a Good Citizen at the Traffic Signal.

They did this by waiting for the green light so that they can move ahead, and also by not throwing garbage on the road, rather putting it in a bin.

KIDS LEARNING THE IMPORTANCE OF USING

A DICTIONARY……

Many times we see young kids who suffer from poor vocabulary. To overcome this barrier, kids of grade 3 have been encouraged to use a dictionary in order to enhance their day to day vocabulary along with learning the meanings of the words they aren’t aware of or aren’t heard by them.

Just by looking up a new word and its meaning, the process mentally glues the word in the Child’s memory for a longer time span.

The Usage of a Dictionary is encouraged in the class by making sure the child has one, and is modeling its use in everyday life.

Hello, I am Aanya from Grade 5. I have moved from Chicago to Ahmedabad a few months back. In my mind, even before I moved here to Ahmedabad, India, I thought to myself “No school can be like my school in Chica-go.” Let's just say, I was wrong. On my 1st day in COIS I was fascinated. Calorx Olive International School has helped me so much ever since I got here. It was so awesome to learn more about my culture and by now I have learned so much. I was new to an Indian school but it didn’t seem like I was in India. I felt as if I was in my old school… I was so comfortable and happy. Even though everything for me was totally new, I still adjust-ed so fast to this new environment, and I couldn’t have done it without the help of Calorx Olive.

I have been motivated to do my very best. Calorx Olive International School is known to bring out the best in every child so they can help our society in the future and make good decisions. COIS has been so sup-portive. Everyone is so nice and helpful here. I never thought I would make new friends so quickly. But from all the support I have received in this school, I have felt something I have never felt before. Something I feel here but not even in my old school! I felt as if I was truly included in everything. I have never felt alone or left out, every girl in Grade 5 would always ask me if I wanted to join them or not. It just feels so good that even though I am a new student, the whole school acts as if you have been their friend forever and never make you feel sad. Sometimes, I myself forget that I am new! The students treat everyone as a friend no matter who they are or where they’ve come from. I am so happy. I never thought I would enjoy going to school this much ever in my life.

Another whole part of Calorx Olive is their teaching. I have learnt so much till now it’s unbelievable! So much knowledge in such short time! I can tell that COIS really cares about a child’s learning and makes sure that all the children are fully clear with the subject and only then when everyone is ready, we move on. The teachers give the children assignments that are for their understanding, making them feel comfortable in what they do so they get motivated to go on. All the teachers here teach so well and have been so kind to me. Every teacher cares about me and my learning and probably all students too. Divya Ma’am (Grade 5 HRT) has sup-ported me so much in my studies. She always compliments me on my work and I always feel so motivated by her. She is my role model. I wouldn’t be in the place I am today, without her and obviously all the other teachers.

I have already received so many opportunities and chances to do things. Whenever I get compliment-ed or am given some type of promotion, I notice that this is where I am meant to be. This is my family. Thank you so much everyone for supporting me whether it’s the staff or students, everyone has made me feel wel-come and right at home. I feel proud calling myself a student of COIS. I Love Calorx Olive International School.
