Former Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown has written a book on Community Policy. As I understand, it is the philosophy of policing that allows officers to become friends with members of the community, placing less of an emphasis on force and placing more emphasis on officers becoming an extension of the people who they are sworn to serve. In Dallas, Police Chief David Brown, has adopted the philosophy that Mayor Brown first implemented while the chief law enforcement officer in Houston. It worked and the Houston police force became known as one of the most effective in the country, largely because they had the support of the community. Recently, the concept took a blow, when a police sergeant in Keene, Texas manhandled a 77-year-old woman during a routine traffic stop. Television reports show the officer, Sgt. Gene Geheb, pulling the woman from her vehicle, placing her on the ground and putting handcuffs on her.

She was arrested and charged with a crime. The question I have is whether or not Sgt. Geheb has a mother who is living and if so, how he would feel if his

mother was arrested by one of his colleagues and placed on the ground. I would be shocked if he would not be offended and highly upset. It seems to me that a decent society is one in which people of advanced age are treated with respect -- and dignity. They should not be subjected to the type of treatment that the

77-year-old grandmother received from an officer of the law in Keene. A lawyer for the grandmother has asked for an apology from the police department. They have refused and have said that the officer followed police procedure. This is sad. This is shameful. This is a disgrace. Our seniors deserve better. All of us deserve better.

What is your attitude in prayer? Or should we ask ourselves, what are we thinking when we pray? We will find an attitude check-up recorded in Luke 18:9-14. Verse 9 suggests that certain people pray within themselves, having a self-righteous attitude. Jesus tells of two men at the prayer meeting; a religious man and a not so religious man. The religious man told God about all the good things he is doing. He even told God he is better than everybody else. The not so religious man said “God is so good, I am not worthy to even look up, but God have mercy on me a sinner.” When God inspected their prayer attitude, the religious man failed the inspection, but the not-so religious man passed the inspection as grand mama would say, “with flying colors.

Mitt Romney and the future Queen of England both exposed themselves in recent days. The future Queen was seen walking around without any clothing on the top of her body. The man who wants to be President exposed himself by telling a group of supporters at a private dinner that nearly half of the people in the United States were worthless and were dependent on the government for their support.Let’s leave the future Queen alone and concentrate for a moment on the man who would become, if elected, the nation’s first acknowledged Mormon president. Most people of that faith who I know tend to be

very smart. Unfortunately for Romney, he does not appear to be like the people I know. He does not appear to be very smart. In fact, during his talk held at a dinner in California, Romney even criticized wealthy individuals who receive tax breaks from the government. Does Romney realize what comes from his mouth sometimes? I think not. Remember when he spoke at the Republican Convention and he neglected to make mention of those men and women who risk their lives daily on overseas battle fields for people like Romney and people like you and I.The reality is that former Governor Romney is not prepared to be president of the United States of America. He may be capable of running a business, but not the world’s greatest Democracy. Governor Romney, take your seat. The Oval office is not your fishing ground.

Downtown Dallas is going through a metamorphism. Old historic buildings are being converted to all sorts of things. The old Mobile building is now a well known Hotel and the old historic Dallas Power and Light buildings on Commerce is the home to a man’s upscale clothing store, flat apartments if you will and a Asian fusion restaurant called Fuse Japan. Once you enter the door and go up the elevators you are a visitor for residence of the converted office space. Since these are residence you can see the residence walk through with their pets. As you enter you are engulfed in jazz fusion music. Nice melodic music! You walk right into the hostess area and I was greeted by a warm hello and promptly escorted to my table. Given a minute or so to review the menu and right on queue Jackie, my server appears and takes my order, Bento Box III, salad, Cali Roll, shrimp and vegetable tempura, rice, and mento chicken. The Cali Roll is supreme it is just not enough of It and a wonderful item to make a meal out of all by itself. The pickled ginger is fresh with wonderfully moist wasabi. Be careful a little goes a long, long way. The rice was fresh and not over cooked. The dressing for the salad is gingery and intriguing, another good

choice. The tempura and chicken at best is so-so. They both lack flavor even with the topping provided. For ambiance it is wonderful place to go. For speed and promptly served food another thumbs up. For quality of food it is there for taste a mixed review, salad, sushi and rice all great tempura and chicken you need some flavor work. So if you look for a quick place with reasonably priced food stick to the good stuff and venture on to Fuse Japan and have a Bite to eat. Debra’s Monthly Words of Wisdom: PRUDENCE Make decisions after gathering information and considering consequences. Think things through before taking action. Make wiser decisions. Attain goals through forethought. Learn problem solving. Use caution. Consider the greater good. Learn from past mistakes. Prudence in Action: This month, buy only what is needed. List pros and cons prior to making a decision. Analyze: What could have prevented this? Utilize community resources by consulting experts. Eat to satisfy hunger as opposed to eating until full.

Dear Dr. Hollie:I used to be in a relationship with a lady about two years ago. The timing wasn’t quite right for what she wanted to happen with us and we eventually decided to break it off and just be friends. In this time, I’ve gotten to know her on a whole new level. I feel like I’m in a position now to be who she wants me to be. Now we both want to go further with this relationship once more. Here is my problem though: I really want to get back with her, but back when I wasn’t so serious about her, I was cheating with one of her friends. It went on the whole time we were together. The friend initiated it, but I went along with it with no problem at the time. Each time me and my lady would have a fight, this woman would know about it, and in turn come to me. This lady is still really close to her. Women claim they want honesty; so should I confess to this? What happens if I don’t confess and then this friend decides she wants to tell, and everything gets messed up for me for not telling in the first place? It’s a sticky situation. What do you suggest?

Sticky Situation

Dear Sticky,

You know I answer from a therapist and a female point of view. I say tell the truth. You did it, own it, accept the consequences and move on. As for me, I wouldn’t allow someone who knows a potentially damaging secret about me be able to hold me hostage. So, good luck and I wish you the best.

Dear Readers, Please pray for my husband, Bishop David Thibodeaux, and myself as we travel to Korea for the next two weeks to the funeral of Dr. Sun Myung Moon. Thank you and God Bless

The Texas Publishers Association (The Black Press of Texas) believes that Paul Sadler (D), is best qualified to be our next U. S. Senator. Sadler is the Democratic nominee who has served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1991 – 2003. He left the position to care for his son who had been hurt in a serious auto accident. He is the only candidate in the race who has had previous legislative experience. As a result, he can hit the ground running. Sadler supports the Dream Act, would fight to save Medicare, would supports the President’s plan to have a fair tax system designed to make sure that huge corporations and the super wealthy pay their fair share. He is in favor of continuing health care reform while making changes, improvements and corrections. Sadler, a Henderson, Texas resident, is making a special effort to reach out to the traditional voters of the Democratic Party as well as Independents. He knows that this is the only way to win over the heavily funded Republican candidate in the race. While serving in the Texas House of Representatives, Sadler received numerous awards for his legislative work. A decade ago, Sadler was a force in Texas politics.

As the chair of the House Public Education Committee, he had tried to fix school finance when it was only a crisis and not a disaster. He stepped down in 2002, and has since practiced law and kept a low profile. Now he's back, running for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by retiring Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison. Sadler offers the best chance of having an effective U. S. Senator in Washington who can help eliminate the gridlock in Washington. With very little help from the Texas Democratic Party and the National Democratic Committee, Sadler knows that this race will be an uphill fight. But, he believes that it is one worth fighting. The Texas Publishers Association (TPA) believes that Paul Sadler will be an effective representative for Texas in Washington.

Welcome to the weekend, baaaby! For the last couple of weeks, with Mom dying, my heads been in a mist...Big ups to the folks at Golden Gate Funeral Home for a beautiful experience. My Mom, Opal Crawford now rests next to her mom, in Texarkana's Fair Haven Cemetery. That said, I'm just catching up! Chad

"Ochocinco" Johnson and Evelyn Lozado's divorce is final...Was that fast or what? I thought I was the only one who could not fully connect with Oprah Network host and author Iyanla Vanzant? There's been a bunch of negative feedback on Iyanla's interview with Ms. Lozada. Maybe part was Ms. Van Zant and

part being tired of Ms. Lozada! For me, I was hoping the "O" Network would be bet ter than th is garbedygoo, but in this "Love and Hip Hop" society, never say never! Maybe I am confused, lol.I hated the Iyanla interview, but loved Oprah's chat with R&B King Usher! Usher you may have heard, admitted to cheating on his wife with one of the bridesmaids. That is tacky with a capitol "T" for tacky!!! Big ups to Jay-Z and Beyonce on raising 4 million dollars for President Obama's re-election campaign. The power couple also deserves Kudo's for finally clearing up rumors about the Beyonce/Sean Paul video for the song "Baby Boy"...even if this "clear up" came 10 years after the tune was recorded in 2003! The word was that Jay-Z had blocked Sean Paul from appearing alongside "B" in any scene, especially the one where the Diva wiggled around on a fur rug! Then when the tune was performed minus the Reggae/ Dancehall star at the Video Music Awards, rumors

of Jay-Z's jealousy continued to spread. Both balla's are now squashing the rumor. Jay-Z winked and smiled when asked about it, while Sean Paul says the reason no one addressed the controversy is that it helped the song stay in the public eye, including 9 weeks at the top of the Billboard Charts. Man, the rumor was sooo much better than the truth! Hat's off to R. Kelly, who racked up two more Soul Train Music Award Nominations to become the most nominated ever for the show with 21. The show airs Nov. 25th on BET and Centric. T.O.'s financial state was a surprise when I found out, but the fact that former Longhorn Vince young may be broke was a BIG surprise. Young, who was recently cut by the NFL's Buffalo Bills has reportedly gone thru/lost to bad investments etc. a cool 26 Million Dollars in 5 years! This weekend "around the town", Fantasia Barino and Silk appear tonight at the Fair Park Music Hall...Cedric The Entertainer trips it up at the Verizon Theater in Grand Prairie this Saturday evening... Carter High's "Anti Bully" rally is Saturday at the school from 930a.m.-Noon...The Otis Uduebor Sickle Cell Foundations 4th annual 5K/Sickle Cell Family Day Picnic at Bachman Lake from 9a-4p Sat...The Urban League's ITSI Leadership Conference will be held Sat. 8a-3:30p at the J.C. Penney Corporate Headquarters in Plano! Finally, I know it's not too early to mention Grambling Vs. PrairieView, Saturday Oct. 6th in the State Fair Classic? Yes, it's that time aagain, lol...Good times, for sure...Happy Birthday to YOU and celebs this week: Freda Payne 67, Shari Belafonte 58, Holly Robinson-Peete 48, Ricci Lake 48, Alphonso Ribiero, Lance Armstrong and Jada Pinkett-Smith, 41, Jimmy Fallon 38. Thanks for Rollin with a brotha.

ROLLIN WITH A BROTHA

There was once a player on a professional football team. This player was a late draft choice, and this player had a outside chance of making the final roster for the season. The problem with this young rookie was the fact that he was inconsistent. Sometimes the player would play great, and sometimes he would play terrible. Because of his inconsistent practice this young man was given the nick-name "Rainbow". The coaches named him "Rainbow" because one coach said," he's like a rainbow, he don't come out often, but when he does, he sure is something to see"!!!This is how the Cowboys are playing so far this season. In week 1 against the NY Giants, the Cowboys were hitting on all cylinders, the rainbow was shinning bright. In week 1 QB Tony Romo was on top of his game, showing his game throwing the ball while in the pocket or outside of it. Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, and Kevin Ogeltree looked like they were ready to run past the NFL secondary. the Defense was stellar and played the way

an NFL team is suppose to play. But that was week 1 and the "Rainbow" came out. But week 2 in Seattle, was a g l o o m y d a y f o r o u r b e l o v e d Cowboys. The Cowboys gave up 10 points early because of special teams miscues, and the cowboys could never get back in the game. The Seahawks defeated the Cowboys 27-7 improving their record to 1-1while the Cowboys drop to 1-1.Tony Romo only managed to pass for 251 yards ,but was constantly scrambling around the backfield. Romo finished the night completing just over 57 percent of his passes going 23 of 40 for 251 - yards a n d o n e t o u c h d o w n w i t h o n e interception. Tony Romo. Is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL to use the spin move to get away from defenders. Romo used the spin move four times in this game and he made defenders miss every time.DeMarco Murray only gained 44 yards on 12 carries. his average was cut in half from a week ago as he only averaged 3.6 yards per carry. Murray never got on track because he was constantly getting hit near or at the line of scrimmage. Murray added another 4 receptions for 31 yards, but he was never really effective throughout the game.Miles Austin led all receivers in receptions and yards. Austin caught 5 passes for 63 yards and the only touchdown of the game. Austin was the most reliable receiver on the field. Demarcus Ware was limited against the Seahawks quick passing game. Ware finished the game without a sack,Ware

did have 8 total tackles including one for a loss and one hit on quarterback Russell Wilson. The Seahawks doubled teamed Ware throughout the game and he was never able to be a disruptive force.Brandon Carr broke up a couple passes, And did not give up a big play. Carr broke up the only deep pass attempt on his side. Teams continue to attack Carr's side but teams are not having much success. Carr continues to show his acquisition is one of the best of the offseason. Rookie Morris Claiborne had a solid game and only gave up two short catches to his side. Claiborne finished the game with one pass defended and two tackles. The Cowboys played a good game, but the Seahawks played a great game. Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch was dominant on the ground against the Cowboys, rushing for 122 yards on 26 carries with one touchdown.Rookie quarterback Russell Wilson was efficient in his second-career start, completing 15-of-20 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown. It's only the second game of the season, it's not time to jump off the Cowboy band wagon just yet,The Boys are going to win some and they are going to lose some. But just like in life some times you get sunshine and some times you get rain. And some time after that rain you might get a Rainbow! And that could come next week!!!!Thanks DFW Metroplex! May God. Bless You and Help us Change the World!!!

A f t e r 2 3 6 years she is finally show-ing her true co lo r s , t he

people spoke when they voted Barack Obama as President of the United States of America in 2008 without the help of the Supreme Courts. You had a Texan serve two terms as president just before we elected our first Black to the highest office held by man, and some still have a problem calling him president, yet the Texan is out of office and they still refer to him as president. Where is the respect for our leaders? President has shown

to be in step with people of all races all over the world, so why not let the voters speak at the polls. Some of our so call leaders need to stand up and be counted, we need to come together and stand for what is right for all of God's children, because some of us are a little shaky and it's showing in the polls. This election should not be a contest at this point do the math. President Obama has shown himself to be someone the world can trust. It starts at home and then our churches need to get our young people involved at this point and time because it is very critical for all of us at this election in 2012, show your appreciation go and vote, PLEASE!

University of Texas at Arlington History Department Chairman, Professor Marvin Dulaney, is currently writing a book on the history of Blacks in Dallas. When completed it may be one of the most significant literary works ever written about the contributions that people of color have made to one of the most vibrant cities in the country. Historians, sociologists, political scientists, city planners and avid readers are eagerly awaiting the publication of the book that Dr. Dulaney has been contemplating for more than 15 years. Many in the church community are also waiting for the book as religious institutions and individuals have played a vital role in the development of Dallas, its customs, traditions and standards. When he left his teaching post at the University of Charleston in 1996, Dr. Dulaney cited his passion for the book as one of the reasons for his departure. “If I stay here I know that I will never get the book completed,” he said during an interview. A quiet and studious man, Dr. Dulaney previously authored a work entitled Black Police in America, a book that helped to illuminate the historical role of Black law enforcement officials. Former Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown, himself, a former senior law enforcement official described the work as one of the “most thoroughly written pieces on the history of Black police officers.” Those close to Professor Dulaney describe him as a human being who “gives of himself fully to others.” Dr. Harry Robinson, the executive director of the African American Museum in Dallas, said that Dr. Dulaney volunteered his time, his talent and his service to the institution with no request for financial remuneration. “He was a gift to our organization,” Robinson said. “One day he showed up and began to serve.” Known as an exceptional thinker, Dr. Dulaney regularly appears on panels and

participates in forums that explain events of historical significance. He once called the Civil Rights Movement the most important movement in American history. He often speaks of the work of religious leaders in Dallas such as Reverend Maynard Jackson Sr., Reverend Caesar Clark and Reverend S.M. Wright. At the University of Texas at Arlington his classrooms are packed with students who are eager to learn the essence of American history from one of the best prepared sources in the country. They describe his lectures as riveting and pedagogical. A graduate of Central State University, Dr. Dulaney earned his Ph.D. in American and African American history from Ohio State University. He began his teaching career as a research assistant at Ohio State and also worked as an instructor in the Upward Bound Programs at Wittenberg University and Central State University. “All of us in the academic and scholarly communities are waiting for Dr. Dulaney’s book to be published,” said Dr. Robinson. “We know that it will be relentlessly researched and wonderfully written.”

God Notices What Others Overlook

By Geraldine Davidson- Hooker We have read how each person is a part of the body of Christ. Just like the organs of our body, though all have different functions, they make up one whole b o d y. N o o n e i s l e s s important than the other. Each has a function in the church. Sometimes though, we go through times of feeling unappreciated for what we are doing for the Lord. There may be times when we feel that we aren’t accomplishing as much as we would like, at the level we would like to be at, and w e f e e l t h a t w e g o unnoticed. These times can cause us m u c h f r u s t r a t i o n a n d

dismay. It’s hard sometimes when we see an area where we could be used, but fail to be used there. It’s hard to get others interested in what we can do, for not everyone shares our enthusiasm. How do we handle times like these? I know from personal experience, that I don’t handle it as well as what I should. But we need to remind ourselves of the fact that God has planted within us this desire to be used, and He has called us and desires to use us in His kingdom. It may not be our time yet. It just might be a time where God is working in us - helping us to develop more of a Christ-like character. I know it’s hard to be in this place. But don’t be dismayed. God notices you, and will cause others to as well, in His time. What God has birthed in you, He will bring it to pass – one day! “ Wo r k w i l l i n g l y a t whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.” Colossian’s 3:23-24 NLT

10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;I have come that they may have life, and

have it to the full.

This last Memorial Day weekend, the weekend every year where we remember those who have gone on before us and especially those who were killed while fighting to protect our freedoms. Many of you put flowers on your loved ones graves during that time, and reminisced a little about what life was like when they were alive. Cemetery’s like yours are very interesting, some of the graves back in this old section behind the church date back to the time of the Civil War, which took place in the 1860’s. I’ve got a friend who really enjoys walking around in old cemeteries and looking at the tombstones. Sometimes you can find out a lot about a person from their tombstone. Last summer when we took a group to Eastern Kentucky, we got up early one morning and walked around a large cemetery at the top of the mountain. Several of the gravesites were decorated lavishly with lights, flowers, pictures and all

kinds of little trinkets. It was obvious to us that some of the men who were buried there were NASCAR fans, while others enjoyed hunting or fishing. Looking at old tombstones, can at times give you a glimpse of what that person was like when they were alive, but when it comes right down to it each person’s life is encompassed in two dates and a dash, the day they were born, the day they died and the dash that separates those two dates. When you think about it, we do not have control over many things in life. We do not get to decide who our parents are, when we were born, what time period we are going to live, or the culture we are going to face. We do not get to decide the dates on our tombstones. We do not know when our time on this earth will be up. It could today, it could be next week or next year or for many of you reading this message it could be decades away. Only God knows. Our lives are in His hands. But there is one thing we have complete control over, and that’s how we are going to live our lives. In other words how we are going to use our dash.

That is what I want to talk to you about today. This morning we honored our High School Graduates, who have come to one of those important milestones in their lives. Young people I want you to pay careful attention to this message today because if you will live your lives the principles I am going to share with you today; I assure you that you won’t regret it. I want to ask you a question this week. If you knew you had one month to live, would you live your life differently than you are living it right now? During the next few weeks I am going to be writing about series of messages based on that idea. In this series of sermons I want to challenge each one of you to live life as though you only had one month to live. I want to challenge you to live the next 30 days as if they were your last not because you are going to die in a month, Lord willing you are going to live many, many more months and years. The point is if you live the next 30 days as if they were your last then you will know how to really live! Over the next several weeks together we will discover four universal principles that will transform the

question, “What would you do if you had one month to live,” into an amazing lifestyle of meaning and purpose? These four universal principles can be seen in the life of Christ. Jesus is our Lord and Master and as His

Disciples we are to do our best to become more like Him. It does not happen overnight, but instead is a lifelong commitment. Now with that in mind, I want to remind you of something. On several different occasions in the Scripture Jesus tried to prepare His Disciples for His impending death. Unlike us, Jesus knew when He would die. He knew the day and the hour they would nail him to the cross of Calvary. He knew because that is why he came into the world. Amen! So if Jesus knew when He was going to die, it would stand to reason that during that last month or so He would have focused his attention and efforts on the people and the things that meant the most to Him. From a careful examination of His life we will discover four universal principles that will enable us to really live our dash instead of just wandering through life aimlessly. He lived passionately, He loved completely, He learned humbly and He left boldly. This morning we will examine the first two of these principles. Look at what Jesus said in John 10:10. “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” Amen!
