PAGE 3 Vigésimo Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario HOW DO WE TREAT THE MESSENGER?

Let’s not be too hasty in defining who is “the wicked one” and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don’t like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don’t like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don’t like?

Question of the Week

First Reading — The wicked say: With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test (Wisdom 2:12, 17-20). Psalm — The Lord upholds my life (Psalm 54). Second Reading — The wisdom from above is full of mercy and good fruits (James 3:16 — 4:3). Gospel — Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me (Mark 9:30-37). Question for Children: What do think it means for you to fol-low in Jesus footsteps? Question for Adults: What is the cross that you carry today? How do you follow Jesus in the work-place and at home?

Monday: Prv 3:27-34; Ps 15:2-5; Lk 8:16-18 Tuesday: Prv 21:1-6, 10-13; Ps 119:1, 27, 30, 34, 35, 44; Lk 8:19-21 Wednesday: Prv 30:5-9; Ps 119:29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163; Lk 9:1-6 Thursday: Eccl 1:2-11; Ps 90:3-6, 12-14, 17bc; Lk 9:7-9 Friday: Eccl 3:1-11; Ps 144:1b, 2abc, 3-4; Lk 9:18-22 Saturday: Dn 7:9-10, 13-14 or Rv 12:7-12a; Ps 138:1-5; Jn 1:47-51 Sunday: Nm 11:25-19; Ps 19:8, 10, 12-14; Jas 5:1-6; Mk 9:38-43, 45, 47-48

How long have there been parochial schools in the United States? Longer than you may imagine. The Jesuit fathers opened Saint Mary School in Philadelphia in 1782 in the first light of independence. Catholic and Protestant squab-bles about the nature of education forced the Fathers to make this risky and innovative venture in the heart of the city. The school was closed by a devastating fire in 1902, but reopened in 1968 as St. Mary Interparochial School, the first example of a shared parochial school. It is also the only Catholic school within the confines of a national park. This is the “Mother School” of this uniquely American institution. Many parochial schools, especially in “national parishes,” were established to preserve the culture and lan-guage of the “old country,” and also to protect young peo-ple from prejudice. In other countries, Ireland for one, the Church is au-thorized to run national schools, sometimes under the spon-sorship of a parish. In still other places, such as Quebec, publicly-funded “separate schools” were administered by the Church. Wherever the state funds Catholic schools, normally enrollment is guaranteed to all applicants. The Quebec system was dismantled in 1998 when the state de-cided to reorganize schools along linguistic lines rather than religious affiliation. Parochial schools require consid-erable sacrifice, but they endure as a distinctive treasure of the Church in the United States.

A Message from Archbishop José H. Gomez

Brothers and Sisters, We are working hard in the U.S. Bishops’ conference to address the scandals in the Church. We continue to be deeply disturbed and saddened by what has happened. We are determined to seek answers to questions that have been raised. And we are committed to take every step necessary to ensure that we are protecting the people we are called to shepherd and holding our-selves to the highest standards of accountability before God and before the whole family of God. I urge you to read today’s statement from the U.S. bish-ops' administrative committee. It is only the beginning of what needs to be done. But I believe it is a good, solid beginning. This is a time for prayer and penance and puri-fication for those of us who are bishops and priests. And as we work for the renewal and reform of the Church, we are asking humbly for your assistance and expertise — as mothers and fathers, and as faithful Catholics in all walks of life. Please keep praying for our Holy Father and for our Church. And please pray even harder for those who have been hurt. Together let us work to bring healing and restore justice. May our Blessed Mother Mary intercede for the Church, that we might have the wisdom and courage to do all that the Lord requires in this moment.

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

One can always be amazed by the prophets and the wisdom books of the Old Testament. A hundred years or so before Christ, the Book of Wisdom points to the kind of teachings a just person such as Jesus would pro-duce and the death that would result at the hands of the wicked. “Let us beset the just one, because he is obnox-ious to us” and “Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him.” When we are feeling set upon, we can cry out with Psalm 54, “O God, by your name save me, and by your might defend my cause.” With Jesus, we often suffer from the contempt of others, and here we have assurance of God’s help in our need. “Behold, God is my helper; the Lord sustains my life.” When the situation in our country and the world seems difficult or even hopeless, we cry out to God for help and salvation for ourselves, for others in need, and for the Earth itself.

WHERE DO THE WARS COME FROM?

The letter from Saint James is quite explicit about the problem of war and peace. “The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace.” So then, “Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? . . . You kill and envy but you cannot obtain; you fight and wage war.” War is an evil and never to be the first resort in settling conflicts.

Peace and Love-Filled Gratitude! It hardly seems possible that two years and 7 months ago, a parishioner greeted me “Welcome to St. Linus Fr. Les and to California!” and he added: “Where the people here are more sunshine than the weather!”. I pondered for such a time what the words meant. Only later to realize that time and the people would provide me a clear answer. Truly my time in friendship and ministry here have been a blessing and memorable one. Definitely not with-out the lesson and humility gained from mistakes and shortcomings. It was a great privilege to serve God with/through the people of St. Linus and St. Linus School. I am overwhelmed with an experience of gratitude for all you have shown and the willing support I have re-ceived, especially with my ministry at St. Linus Church. From both pastors, Fr. Anthony Gomez and Fr. Christopher Felix, for their wisdom, confidence and understanding, to the deacons and their spouses, Deacon Mario and Nati Mejia, Deacon Chuck and Marge Baker, and Mario and Ann Guerra. To the staff, Ana, Faith, Teresa, Arlene, Maria, Stephanie, Christina and Crystal. To the Administration and faculty of St. Linus School. To all the ministry leaders, and volunteers, thank you so much! To the Church workers I see every

day, I truly learned a lot from your words and example. I have a long list of names in mind, but would only be-come a faint effort for my space here and would never satisfy. In spirit, I embrace all of you in prayer, in heart, I will always love and cherish all of you, in memory will con-sider the best days of my life and in my vocation, my sincere gratitude for bringing the best of my priesthood to ministry with you. I have seen “Christ” in/through and with you. God bless you! I will miss you all!

God Bless you, Father Lester Niez, Associate Pastor

SIMPLICITY AND LOVE As Jesus walks along with his disciples, they are talking and arguing. Jesus asks them what they are discussing, but he knows. They are arguing about which of them will be greatest in the reign of God. He tells them that whoever wishes to be first must take the last place and be the servant of all. Then he takes a little child and places it in their midst. “Whoever re-ceives one child such as this in my name, receives me.” Sometimes it is assumed that small children are incapable of under-standing the teachings of the Gospels and the sacraments of the Church. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which has its roots in the Montessori method of pedagogy, allows even very small children as young as three to experience the life of Jesus and the liturgy of the Church through materials such as the altar, small vestments in seasonal colors, and wooden maps of the Holy Land where Jesus lived and traveled, as well as other materials related to the Gospels and the liturgy. People who ob-serve the children at their work using this method of catechesis are amazed at their understanding of the Gospels and espe-cially the parables. Most importantly, the children develop a genuine love for Jesus that is deep and touching. There is a lesson here for all of us, as Jesus pointed out. We must have the same simplicity and love for Jesus as these little children in order to enter the reign of God.

Psalm 68:5 A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation.

A Pro Life Rosary for the Unborn Every Tuesday at 6:30pm inside church before mass

Many lives depend on us advocating for them!

Please continue to pray! The babies are counting on us! ~ Remember to pray daily for your spiritually adopted child and his/her parents. During your earthly life, this spiritually adopted child of yours is known only to God, but in the world to come, it is hoped that you will meet this child whose life was spared by your prayers and spend eternal happi-ness with him/her.

One Month: Your spiritually adopted baby has been quite active over the past month. Already your baby is 10,000 times bigger than at conception. Your baby has developed the foundations of his/her brain, spinal cord, and nervous system by the 20th day. His/Her heart began to beat on the 21st day and is pumping blood though its own cir-culatory system. The blood type can be different from the mother’s. Your baby is most vulnerable during the next month of being aborted. Pray that the Lord of Life might move the heart of this baby’s mother to give the most precious gift of all – the gift of life.
