Welcome to the Association for the Health Care Environment’s annual conference, EXCHANGE 2018! You are at the foremost event for environmental services professionals, and we’re glad you’re here.

Health care as we know it is evolving and undergoing significant changes. Now more than ever, it is vital for environmental services professionals to network face-to-face with peers from across the country, keep current on the latest products and services, and master the knowledge and skills necessary to make us even stronger leaders. In three days, you can take an active leadership role and participate in the evolution of health care here in Columbus, Ohio, the Arch City.

The city of Columbus itself is a thought leader. While it’s true Columbus is home to fifteen Fortune 1000 headquarters, a vibrant shopping and gallery scene, a rich farm-to-table movement, and a top-ranked zoo and science center, it is also a proud supporter of the Association for the Health Care Environment and its initiatives:

• A highlight of the conference is the debut of The Ohio State University Health Care Environmental Services Certificate offered through the Hospitality Management program. It is the first academic certificate in health care environmental services within a hospitality management program.

• The city of Columbus has awarded the AHE a generous scholarship fund which provides access for Ohio State University students wishing to attend and experience the EXCHANGE 2018 conference.

One of the most important aspects of EXCHANGE 2018 is the level of professional development opportunities available. This year, with thought leaders in mind, we have developed a program of unprecedented value. Whether it’s principles of leadership, staffing methodologies or infection prevention, you’ll find what you’re looking for at this meeting.

We’ve upgraded from an ordinary exhibit hall--which focused on the buying and selling of products or services--to a true Solution Center which focuses on learning, knowledge exchange, peer-to-peer networking, and relationship building. We’ve developed learning labs led by experts who specialize in leadership-focused content, and we’re thrilled to bring back our Conference-within-a-Conference with a spotlight on innovation and transformation in health care.

You, as leaders, have the vision, the wherewithal and the experience to help us pave our way into the future and transformation of health care. Now join us at EXCHANGE 2018 to take in the latest, most cutting-edge knowledge available so that we can do just that.

See you there!

VPEI can also help leaders across other support disciplines set new standards of excellence with respect to procurement, decision-making and change management.

The program is built around a real world scenario of a director-level leader creating an actionable plan for change based on the principles of value analysis. Participants identify key stakeholders, apply credible research and data, and craft evidence-based proposals to influence team members. The workshop helps participants pinpoint ways they can transform their approach from the conventional to the strategic. In addition, VPEI focuses on the essential steps required to ensure key decision makers have a seat at the table during early discussions.

Something for Nothing8:30 am – 9:30 am

Bruce Wilkinson, CEO and Chief Culture Officer of Workplace Consultants, Inc.

Changing economic times have caused many organizations to

rethink the way they manage, motivate, lead, inspire and hold people accountable for performance at work. But some employees, particularly those with tenure, develop a sense of entitlement and believe they deserve what they get because it’s owed to them. Entitled employees do not feel obligated to perform to their maximum potential, are more difficult to work with, frequently resist change and are less likely to respect leaders. They may also cause considerable problems for those employees who are doing their jobs each day without complaining. This high-level, energetic and content driven session will address how attitudes positively and negatively affect team performance morale, customer service, personal accountability and leadership’s ability to get things done.

Globalization and Infectious DiseasesRodney Rohde, PhD, MS, SM

(ASCP) CMSVCM, MBCM, FACSc, Chair and Professor, Clinical Laboratory Science, Associate Dean for Research, College of

Health Professions, Texas State University

The globalization of infectious diseases continues to dominate headlines on an almost daily basis. Population mobility is a main factor in globalization of public health threats and risks, specifically distribution of antimicrobial resistant organisms. Drug resistance is a major risk in health care settings and emerging in community-acquired infections. Clinical implications and health policy challenges associated with movement of persons across barriers permeable to products, pathogens, and toxins (e.g., geopolitical borders, patient care environments) are complex. Outcomes are complicated by high numbers of persons who move across disparate and diverse settings of disease threat and risk. HAIs account for roughly one infection every three seconds. Action must be taken or the current situation could spiral out of control, rendering current drugs ineffective and potentially endangering the lives of countless people per year worldwide.

Fight. More. Better.Joe Gerstadt, Keynote Speaker,

Author, Consultant

Proper decision-making and problem-solving are essential

for any successful team. Unfortunately, they are also two of the most difficult things that we do together. Oftentimes, disagreements create hurdles, rather than solutions, for group decision-making and problem-solving.

Despite the importance of doing disagreement well, it is rarely seen in the workplace and most teams avoid serious disagreement at all costs. However, not only does avoiding disagreement compromise our ability to solve problems and make decisions, it also wastes the mix of identities, perspectives, and experiences found in our workforce.

Joe Gerstandt will share strategies for being more intentional about disagreements in order to make decisions and solve problems together. These strategies will help drive better shared outcomes and a more inclusive employee experience for the teams involved.

have been 13 such outbreaks affecting severely immunocompromised patients. Preserving the cleanliness and quality of laundered HCTs is a major objective of the laundry process, and environmental infection prevention is key to achieving this objective. Drawing from epidemiology and real world experiences from health care facility inspections, Dr. Sehulster and Mr. Streifel will present best practice approaches to minimizing inadvertent environmental contamination affecting HCTs.

Break 3:15 pm – 3:30 pm

LL LEARNING LABS3:30 pm – 4:30 pm

LL Active Shooter: Preparedness and ResponsePatrick Shaw, Protective Security Advisor – North East, Ohio, U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Active shooter incidents are often unpredictable and evolve quickly. In the midst of the chaos, anyone can play an integral role in mitigating the impacts of an active shooter incident. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security aims to enhance preparedness through a “whole community” approach by providing products, tools, and resources to help you prepare for and respond to an active shooter incident.

LL Building an Environmental Services Career LadderFiona Nemetz, MS, CHESP, System Director, EVS, Safety and Security, Northside Hospital

It’s no surprise that leaders in environmental services departments across the nation are challenged with turnover, which exhausts resources and can be a heavy financial burden. In fact, the industry average for environmental services turnover is at an all-time high, with many departments experiencing close to a 40% turnover rate.

What would building a program that provides internal career opportunities for technicians and reduces turnover look like? The foundation of such a program would leverage the CHEST and CSCT programs as excellent educational opportunities to guide practice and develop professionalism, enabling management to launch a robust career ladder and take departmental performance to the next level.

LL Dry Biofilm: The Real Challenge of Infection PreventionMark Hodgson, MPH, LRSC, CMIP, Senior Vice President, Medentech

Biofilms are everywhere. In fact, they are the most common location of growth and survival for microorganisms. While the role of biofilms on normally wet surfaces and related infections is well understood, the risk of infection transmission may be under appreciated. Recent studies indicate that even normally dry surfaces support biofilm. Additionally, due to their complex nature, standard testing methods for demonstrating disinfectant efficacy on bacteria may provide misleading results.

This session reviews current information related to biofilms in the health care environment and explores methods for control and infection prevention. Participants will learn the basics of biofilm: where they are found; how environmental stress, such as chemical disinfectant treatments and UV irradiation, can increase biofilm resistance and persistence; their role in health care associated infection, and how they can be controlled in order to reduce the risk of infection for patients and health care workers.

LL Re-evaluating Hospital Mattress Cleaning Methods to Reduce HAIsEdmond Hooker, MD, DrPH, Professor of Health Services Administration, Xavier University

Current methods of cleaning health care mattresses can lead to damage, inadequate disinfection, or infection. This presentation delves deeply into the body of evidence suggesting that mattresses may still be contaminated, even after discharge cleaning. In addition, participants will review recent alerts from the FDA about mattress failures and recommendations for routine mattress inspection.
