“I tell everyone that you should own a wood stove because it is the only heating method or fuel source that you can get on your own,” said Gene “Smokey” Bradley, the owner and namesake of Smokey’s Stoves. “In a worst case scenario, you could chop up furniture for fuel and you could cook food on it while heating up your whole house.”

Bradley and his wife, Trudy, got into the stove business by a turn of fate 40

years ago, but through hard work and experience, have become experts in home heating options. Evolving from installation contractors to the owners of three retail stores, the Bradleys believe in solving a customers’ problems, not just selling products.

“The biggest strength of our business over the years is that I never really cared if I sold you a stove,” he said. “I can show you what I have and what it’s capable of producing, but I never

option. Though Bradley has a fondness for wood stoves, the business also sells other options including pellet and gas.

“Gas has gained in popularity over the years,” he said. “Gas fires are beautiful to look at and efficient. They will heat a whole house and you can set them with a thermostat to keep the house at a nice, comfortable temperature.”

Among pellet options, Bradley is enthusiastic about Wiseway non-electric stoves that run for 24 hours and heat as much as 2,000 square feet.

“These stoves are truly in a class of their own and the most unique product to hit the market in all my time in business,” he said.

Customers are interested in stove heat as an alternative to heat pumps

and high electric bills, Bradley noted. The right alternative option depends on several factors including how much effort the customer is willing to do to maintain the products.

“The current wood stoves are the most efficient I’ve ever seen -- they truly burn so clean that there is little if any build up in the flues,” Bradley said. “However, that doesn’t mean owners don’t have to clean their chimneys. Chimneys must be maintained at least once a year to make sure nothing has deteriorated. If I could emphasize one thing it would be that whatever appliance you may own, have it serviced once a year. It would save people hundreds of dollars in the long run in repairs or thousands of dollars in replacements.”
