On behalf of all of my colleagues and myself, a very warm

welcome to Amsterdam and to the Feed Additives event.

I hope you have a most enjoyable and informative three

days hearing from thought-provoking speakers and

networking with friends and colleagues across the indus-

try. Having recently taken over as Managing Director of

Feedinfo News Service, I thought it might be useful to

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Feed Additives 2018 Amsterdam, an

event designed to meet the needs of the feed additives, premix and compound

feed sectors.

Over the next few days, you will discover more about the market challenges

and opportunities of today and tomorrow, and how feed additives will play a

part in providing solutions along the way. I hope you learn about new industry

trends, sub-trends ready to emerge, and go back home with a clearer vision of

what is in store on the road to 2050.

Feed Additives 2018 addresses some of the opportunities ahead, but it is also

an opportunity for you to reflect on and discuss among yourselves the backdrop

and implications of some industry-wide developments which Feedinfo has helped

bring to readers’ attention in recent months.

In vitamin markets, volatility may be offset somewhat by the lifting of BASF’s

force majeure, but other issues make

the pricing environment unpredictable

too, like the EU’s recent reticence about

vitamin B2 (80%) produced by Bacillus

subtilis KCCM-10445, or Chinese sup-

pliers having to scale back or stop pro-

duction due to environmental reasons.

In amino acids, markets seem stable,

but the oversupply situation is still here,

and we have seen Asian manufacturers

taking extra steps in their focus on

specialty amino acids which are

high-value-added products that can

be sold at higher prices.

A fair amount of company expan-

sions and consolidation took place too,

as we reported on new animal nutrition production facilities and a wave of M&A

activity, with ADM in talks to acquire Neovia for €1.5 billion being one of the latest

significant stories.

That is the recent past, but we wonder ‘what will the animal nutrition industry

look like in 2050?’

At the 34th edition of Feed Additives, we could be living in a Matrix-like society,

where advancements in artificial intelligence and nanotechnology would make it

possible to plug our brains into computers and live in a simulated world, where we

could start using robots to do work at the factory.

We could rely entirely on renewable energy by 2050 and smartphones could be

obsolete. But in short, there is no way to tell, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy

discovering the future as it unfolds. Or you can seek to play a part in shaping that

future. As a pro-active member of the animal nutrition community, it is your duty to

help address today’s challenges and tomorrow’s needs. Think of Feed Additives 2018

as a chance to engage in the debate.

The main driver is, of course, feeding the 9bn plus humans who will be living on

Earth in 2050 by doubling the amount of food available, and doing so sustainably

and responsibly. But when it comes to animal protein, it is easier said than done.

The question of how we will feed more than 40bn-head of livestock and poultry

by 2050 still elicits a wide-range of responses from shock to disbelief and even

environmentalist disgust. The one that goes ‘if cattle were a nation, they would rank

third behind China and the United States among the world’s largest greenhouse

gas emitters’ in particular leaves me stupefied.

Regardless of one’s reaction, the reality is that, based on OECD and FAO

projections, meat consumption per person will rise from about 34kg/person in

2015 to 49kg/person in 2050. But is it

also safe to assume that feed demand,

and by extension feed additive demand,

will keep on rising to keep up with

global livestock, poultry and aquacul-

ture production?

Your meat industry customers

can sometimes suffer from bad press.

Yet the world is not about to give up

meat. In fact, with the growth of the

middle-class in countries such as India

and China, more meat is being con-

sumed than ever before.

Amid the debate over antibiotics,

industrial food production and animal

husbandry practices, nutrient delivery

kind of gets lost in the shuffle, yet the potential for improved animal nutrition has

never been more promising.

Feed Additives 2018 aims to provide you with answers with regard to a more

pressing issue at hand; the need now for smarter feed. What is more important to

you than formulating a finely tuned meal that satisfies an animal’s every nutritional

need while accomplishing more human objectives?

The future will see animal nutrition tackling new paradigms as our industry seeks

to tackle the low-cost feed formulation/best-performance conundrum, while increas-

ing their awareness of society demands, with a view to providing transparency on

how animals will be fed.

In other words, feed conversion will continue as an important driver, considering

that better feed conversion is related to less feed and water consumption, better feed

digestibility and less excretion, or less pollutant elimination. However, we will be

more focused on final economic results.

Also, customers and consumers will increasingly focus on feed safety, animal

welfare and sustainability considerations.

Sophisticated analytical models will be used, not based on least cost

feed formulation, but based on best economical feed formulation, where

environment, strains and production proposals will be taken into account,

besides the usual knowledge of animals’ requirements, nutrients and energy

composition of ingredients.

In terms of feed additive demand in 2050, anyone pretending to have answers

is either a charlatan or a prophet.

My colleague Martijn de Cocq, who is Lead Analyst at Feedinfo News Service,

knows you cannot predict prices so far ahead. But he is sure demand for feed

additives in terms of volumes will keep on growing in the coming decades, in

line with global feed consumption.

Right now, he says the oversupply situation for some amino acids is not without

its challenges, and we have seen massive volatility and price increases over the year

for vitamins, but in many cases, prices are declining again. And another member

of the Feedinfo team Janos Gal (Senior Analyst, Feed Phosphates and Copper Sul-

phate) argues we can also expect significant developments in the feed phosphate

markets in the foreseeable future, given that a lot has changed in the past year, as

we have seen with plant closures, consolidation and unexpected price increases.

PRICE LEVELS‘What price levels will there be and when?’ are the questions Feedinfo seeks to

answer, thus enabling companies to stay on top of those developments and see

what supply and demand ratios are going to look like.

The year 2050 will come very fast and your customers will not wait 32 years to

have their demands met. So, in that sense, 2050 has already arrived and the animal

nutrition industry will need to move fast and be bold. We hope the forward-looking

information learned at Feed Additives 2018 and its subsequent editions will guide

you into a somewhat clearer and less risky future.

Conference report

During the three-day conference, founders, chief exec-

utives and business leaders from global feed addi-

tives producers and buyers heard from academics,

expert advisers and their own peers in a series

of presentations and groups discussions. Topics

addressed included M&A activity in the sector,

an in-depth look at the recent crisis in the vitamins

market, and outlook for key markets in the Asia-Pacific region.

Attendees were presented with a series of facts, ideas and seasoned

opinions to help them shape their own business plans and connect with

potential partners who could help those plans come to fruition.

MARKET INSIGHTIn an overview of the ongoing consolidation in the global animal nutrition

sector, Simon Duke, Editor-in-Chief of Feedinfo News Service, said

diversification continued to be ‘the name of the game’.

Giving the inaugural presentation at Feed Additives Asia 2018 in

Bangkok, Mr Duke said all signs indicated consolidation in the feed

additive industry was expected to continue in 2018 and could be described

in two forms: horizontal consolidation, in which premix or feed compan-

ies would continue to expand operations; and vertical integration,

which is more about premixers or feed companies acquiring feed additive

manufacturers.

According to Mr Duke, the vertical trend is driven by the industry’s

ambition to bring to market solutions which address key issues, such

as antibiotic reduction.

He said: “Providing strong global brands will remain key as the market

is eager to invest in reliable products with proven R&D knowhow.”

Mr Duke said major feed additives companies did not just want

to be seen leading the market through additional capacities. Instead,

they are cultivating the image of being science and technology-based

partners.

CHINAMr Duke also detailed how foreign firms considered China a ‘low-cost

production hub’. Examples of toll manufacturing agreements include

Evonik’s and Fufeng’s threonine manufacturing co-operation in Northern

China, as well as Ajinomoto’s sub-contracting of lysine and threonine

production to Meihua, as part of the Japanese firm’s strategy to acceler-

ate a shift to specialty feed additives.

To demonstrate the current importance of China in the global amino

acid and vitamin production map, he cited Prof Qi Guang-Hai, of the

Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, who spoke at Feed Additives

Global 2017 in Frankfurt in September last year.

The professor has estimated China produces 70% of the world’s feed

grade vitamins and 41% of feed grade amino acids.

Mr Duke, however, warned Chinese vitamin production could be

expected to become more expensive, as China’s many vitamin factories

could be affected to various degrees by the enforcement of environmental

protection measures.

He said: “Many upstream facilities can be subject to reduction in

output or even complete shutdown. The resulting supply issues are dis-

rupting a wide range of industries. Feed additives are no exception.”

Continuing the discussions on the Chinese market, the second speaker

of the day, Dirk Jan Kennes, Global Sector Strategist, Farm Inputs at

Rabobank, believed China would need to invest in its livestock industry

to upgrade it to bridge the gap between its sector and that of the rest

of the developed world.

Mr Kennes said: “It is necessary for China to invest to bridge the gap

and they will also need to focus on improving their breeding strategies.”

Mr Kennes said, at present, China was well behind other nations, such

as the Netherlands, in terms of piglets per sow production and feed usage

per animal.

He also touched on the importance of diversifying product combin-

ations and portfolios to stay competitive, especially for feed companies

that compete for this consumer base.

Mr Kennes added that due to recent mergers and acquisitions, some

feed additives companies had been hampered by this, restricting their

access to customers on a farmer level.

On May 16-18, 2018, more than 200 senior representatives of the specialty feed ingredients sector came together at the Millennium Hilton Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand, to discuss trends in the current market and strategies required for success in the future.

In terms of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP), he said companies in

the region needed to apply better farm management practices to be able

to move away from AGPs.

Mr Kennes said: “If you manage your farms well and practice good

hygiene, your need for AGPs diminishes.”

For this, Mr Kennes said farmers needed to be educated so they could

enable themselves to improve their practices.

PRICINGFollowing presentations from Charoen Pokphand Foods (CP Foods) and

the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO),

Feedinfo News Service Lead Analyst Martijn de Cocq presented attendees

with a pricing update for the major vitamins and amino acids covered

by Feedinfo.

He said: “It has been a rollercoaster ride in the past year for nearly

all vitamins, and it is still ongoing as we speak.

“Although fundamentals [for example, increased cost price due to

new environmental regulations in China] exacerbated to some extent

by BASF’s Citral force majeure, are obvious, it was almost unbelievable to

see how much sentiment was involved and how much insecurity there was

at end user level about the fulfilment of their supply chain and pipeline.

“We are convinced that lessons will be, and have to be, learned

going forward.”

Like amino acids, there has been a massive shift in production

of vitamins from Western sources to China or other Asian countries,

Mr de Cocq highlighted.

This came under the forms of shifting production locations from

Western countries to China, by starting Chinese-Western joint ventures,

or by newly built original Chinese vitamin factories.

He said: “By now, a lot of vitamin prices have stabilised at a high

level and are coming down again. More than with amino acids, we do,

on the one hand, expect to see volatile markets going forward, but we

also expect prices to come down.”

In the near-term, Feedinfo remains bearish for the biggest part of

the vitamin group, with good examples being Vitamin E and D-Calpan

at the moment.

Mr de Cocq said: “Longer term, 2018-2020, although fundamentals

should indicate a steadier and somewhat bearish market, we expect

the main drivers for the trend will be, for example, sudden supply chain

interruptions, shortage of intermediates and market sentiment.

“In our opinion, the vitamin market and the supply chain around it

still needs more maturing.”

with leaders of the Asian industry talking candidly and honestly about

the issues facing the region.

The second day of the conference began with Kevin Liu (Vice-President

of Technical Services and Business Development Asia Pacific, Adisseo),

Robert Redman (General Manager, DSM) and Ramakanta Nayak

(General Manager, Trouw Nutrition) taking on the challenge of

describing the shape of the industry in 2050.

Mr Liu, Mr Redman and Mr Nayak were in agreement that among

the biggest challenges for feed additive companies in Asia were limited

raw material resources, animal diseases management, regulatory

barriers, optimal farm management and lack of institutional support.

Limited resources and using them in an optimal way can be quite

a task.

Mr Nayak said: “There is such a variety of raw materials that it is

important to have the right feed additives to maximise digestibility,

as well as consider the health of animals.”

He argued that optimisation of feed management to ensure food

safety would gain more importance in the region.

Mr Liu said the APAC region lacked adequate assessment testing

facilities to measure the efficacy of feed additives.

He said: “How do you judge the accuracy of feed additives? This is

still an issue in the area.”

The impacts of animal diseases

are also very consequential in the

Asia-Pacific region. For instance,

in 2004, when avian influenza

rocked Thailand, there was

hardly any chicken available,

Mr Redman said.

“The big challenge is the

management of diseases,” he

added, especially now that AGPs

are being phased out in some

countries of the region.

“There is, above all, a need for

farm management strategy to help

with disease management. Good

biosecurity first, then we can support the growth with feed additives.”

Looking at the case of fish farming, Mr Nayak said genetic breeding

lines were also a challenge.

He said: “Fast-growing fish creates more disease risk.”

Nayak remains optimistic though, as more and more focus was

being placed on aqua safety and its close connection to human health

considerations.

The fact fish is seen as a lean food in the consumer eye will continue

to spur growth in the aquaculture sector.

Mr Nayak mentioned countries such as Bangladesh and Myanmar,

where per capita fish consumption is already very high, will continue

to increase their demand.

Changes in Government policy in Thailand and Indonesia or in other

countries without industry involvement can be quite damaging too.

The panelists believed regulatory barriers were tough and costs to

register feed additives products in Asia-Pacific markets could be enormous.

Mr Liu said: “It can sometimes take years and millions of dollars in

investment. The best innovative products are in danger of not getting

on the market in time.”

Mr Redman added: “The registration processes are very time-consum-

ing and sometimes you are missing the innovation. It is then too late to

respond to the current needs.”

Mr Redman also said that

banning AGPs without having

first trained farmers or consulted

with the industry could be fatal.

Additionally, he said the

industry must not underestimate

the negative publicity it receives.

The panelists all agreed this

will continue to haunt the sector

in the coming years. And social

media will only help accentuate

the issue.

As Redman said: “We have to

be pro-active and tell world we

are not the bad guys.”

in selected areas where they have an edge. They are looking

to manage commoditised ingredients in a smart way, by handling

higher volumes despite streamlining operational costs at the

same time.

Q The human factor has always been crucial in transactions

in the feed industry; how do you create the same human

connections in an online platform?

A An online platform will never replace human interactions,

but rather complement it to make certain operations more

efficient, convenient and safer. Some traders and buyers struggle

already with exchanging hundreds of emails every day, spending

money and time to identify suppliers for basic commodities

or non-strategic product categories to finally still experience

operational losses or failing to get the best terms.

It’s a reality that misunderstandings, contract breaches and

lack of business ethics are happening to even the most seasoned

experts, despite human interaction.

Q Your background is

in investment banking;

what could raw materials

traders learn from financial

traders?

A Some people in our

network are trading both

raw materials and financial

products, so I guess their core

mentality and business sense

are quite comparable.

Eventually, financial

trading is more high-tech,

transparent and faster, while

raw materials trading requires

more comprehensive knowledge

in supply chain management, as well as technical product and

industry insights. Therefore, we believe the main learning point,

if any, would be the use of digital platforms which have been used

during decades, whereas raw material traders have kept their

traditional channels to do business.

Q You have a partnership with Atradius to provide credit

insurance on a trade-by-trade basis; what other steps

can one take to limit counterparty risk?

A Relying on only one or a few traditional counterparties

and ignoring new channels poses the highest counterparty

Q Why has it taken so long for an online trading platform

to enter this industry?

A Online matchmaking platforms are not a completely new

concept to feed industries, with some platforms dating back

to early 2000s.

Our platform is the result of the digitalisation trend and use of

advanced technologies, the combination of best practices

from outside and inside the industry and, ultimately, intensifying

market trends urging market participants to diversify networks

and toolsets.

In a recent research paper, we outlined some ideas on how to

strategically approach purchasing to cope with current industry

challenges, such as higher price volatility and more frequent supply

disruptions driven by environmental regulations, trade wars and

vulnerable global supply chains.

Many existing matchmaking platforms fail to offer a holistic

solution to some of the most pressuring industry challenges, as

Martijn is an experienced Managing Director with a proven track record in building profitable growth in specialty life sciences (nutrition ingredients for feed/food, diagnostics). A business leader with a biochemistry background, he has experience in leading commercial, M&A, legal/regulatory, finance, HR, production and science functions of organisations. His career has taken him to six different countries, working for firms including AKZO Nobel, DSM and Nutreco. He is currently MD of Terra Nova Life Sciences, a private equity firm investing in the sustainable feed-food value chain.

Nicky is a recognised corporate responsibility professional with extensive experience in managing and directing corporate social responsibility strategies in global companies. Through her consultancy, she advises multi-national organisations and leading non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on the development and implementation of sustainable development strategies and measurement frameworks, materiality assessments, stakeholder dialogue and reporting. As co-founder and director of Chronos Sustainability, Nicky leads the company’s engagement with the private and NGO sectors, and specialises in the development and implementation of sustainable development and responsible sourcing strategies, multi-stakeholder partnerships and corporate disclosure. Nicky played an instrumental role in the development of the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW) and is executive director of the BBFAW. She is also responsible for directing the secretariat of the Global Coalition for Animal Welfare. With Dr Rory Sullivan, Nicky is co-editor of The Business of Farm Animal Welfare.

With more than 25 years of experience in the international aquaculture industry, Hans established his consulting company, Aquaculture Experience, in June 2008. Since the start of the company, Hans has worked on several assignments, ranging from acting as Interim General Manager for an aquafeed company in Greece to developing export markets in Asia and supervising field trials of eels in ponds in the Netherlands. Aquaculture Experience has gone from strength to strength, providing valuable advice and professional consultation to an ever-expanding group of companies in more than 15 countries to date. He graduated with a masters degree in Biology from Wageningen Agricultural University, with a specialisation in Aquaculture and Nutrition. From 1999 to 2008 Hans worked in Provimi Holding’s Aquafeed Division, first as Manager of Aquafeed Development and, from 2003, as Division Manager. Hans was instrumental in the growth of Provimi’s Aquafeed Division from the word go; production eventually increased to about 250,000 tonnes of aquafeed in Brazil, Chile, Denmark, Spain and Greece in 2007.

Daniela Battaglia is Livestock Development Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). She is member of the FAO Working Group on Antimicrobial Resistance and Focal Point for the use of antimicrobials in animal production and feeding. She is also responsible, for the Organization programme of work on feed safety and animal welfare and she coordinates the FAO Livestock Technical Network. Daniela holds an M.Sc. in Agricultural Science and another in Tropical Animal Health and Production. Before joining the FAO in 2001, Daniela worked for nine years for the European Commission and has been based in in several countries: Belgium, UK, Peru, Suriname, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Israel and Tunisia.

Mark Bond is an experienced life scientist and policy expert, enhanced through academic, commercial and public sector roles. Mark is currently the Senior Scientific Adviser within the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA’s) Animal Feed, TSEs and Animal By-products branch. Key responsibilities include representing the UK at European Commission meetings on animal nutrition, as well as providing scientific advice to inform on FSA policy development and animal feed incident management. Academic achievements include a degree in biotechnology (Leeds), a PhD in crop development under climate change scenarios (St Andrews) and a master’s degree in science and technology policy and management (Manchester Business School).

Ludovic is Research Engineer in nutrition and growth modelling for pigs at INRA (UMR PEGASE), France, and is responsible for a research team working on pigs in livestock systems. He has a PhD in Biology and Agronomy, obtained at ENSA Rennes in 2004. He is working on heterogeneity among individuals to integrate it in growing pig nutritional models and study its implication in the definition of feeding strategies, considering animal performance, economic results and environmental impacts. In the past five years, this includes the development of precision feeding concepts and their inclusion in decision support tools, for instance through projects as the Horizon 2020 EU Feed-a-Gene program (2015-2020).

Luca is a food technologist with a PhD in agri-food economy and extensive experience in regulatory affairs, as well as in the livestock and meat industry. He is responsible for scientific/technical files relevant to the industry and follows up on feed and food regulatory developments impacting on the strategic interests of the FEFANA membership, including those pertaining to sustainability and innovation. Luca also provides support to and co-ordination of expert groups and advocacy of industry’s interests through contacts with EU competent authorities.

Patrick Charlton is Vice-President at Alltech and Chief Executive of Alltech Coppens, a specialist aquaculture feeds company, which was acquired by Alltech in 2016. Before joining Alltech Coppens, Patrick oversaw the activity of 32 Alltech offices across the European region. He graduated from the University of Nottingham and joined Alltech UK in 1991, becoming the Technical Manager in 1995. In 1998, Patrick moved to Cape Town, South Africa, to become Technical Director for Alltech’s Africa and Middle East region, working with customers in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, Iran, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana and Zimbabwe. Patrick took on the role of General Manager of Alltech Canada in 2000, working with customers, consultants and researchers across Canada. In 2005, he was promoted to global Bioplex manager, responsible for all activities relating to the Bioplex series of organic minerals. Patrick currently lives in the UK and received a master’s degree in fermentation and distilling from Heriot-Watt University in 2006.

Martijn graduated with a bachelors degree in logistics engineering in 2002 from the University of Amsterdam. After being active as a Logistics Consultant for some time, he started working at Provimi Netherlands in 2004 as a purchaser of micro feed ingredients, specialising in vitamins, amino acids and trace elements. In the years after that, Martijn has been active in various purchasing, sales and trading roles around micro feed ingredients, working mainly with amino acids and vitamins. He has built up a lot of experience with the premix and compound feed industry, as well as direct sourcing of amino acids and vitamins from several regions, but with a focus on Asia. In the last two-and-a-half years, Martijn has been working at Cargill Animal Nutrition in The Netherlands as a trading lead for feed ingredients, specialised in amino acids and vitamins. Most recently he has joined Feedinfo News Service as an expansion of the analyst team.

André Bos joined DSM in 1987 and is President Global Products and Strategic Alliances, headquartered near Basel, Switzerland. DSM Nutritional Products (DNP) is the world’s leading supplier of vitamins, carotenoids, omegas and nutraceuticals to the food, pharmaceutical, personal care and feed industries. Within DSM, André worked for DSM Hydrocarbons, led the sales office in Italy for DSM Chemicals, managed the Powder Coating Resins unit, was President for DSM Biologics in Canada and moved to DNP in 2005. Within DNP he managed the Aroma Ingredients unit, has led M&A activities, was head of the Human Nutrition and Health Business, before moving to the current function. André studied at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

Simon holds the position of Editor-in-Chief at Feedinfo News Service, a company he has worked at for 16 years.

Sandra is Professor Emerita of Newcastle University, UK. She retired as Chair of Agriculture in 2017 after working for more than 35 years on the multi-disciplinary interactions between nutrition, reproduction, behaviour and welfare in pigs and other livestock. She has received the Leroy Fellowship Award from the European Federation of Animal Science and Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Animal Welfare from the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare. She has served as a member of the UK Farm Animal Welfare Council and the Animal Health and Welfare Panel of the European Food Safety Authority.

Janos Gal has been an analyst since 2008. He holds an honours degree in Journalism from Edinburgh Napier University. He has worked in the price reporting industry, covering various fertiliser and chemical markets for eight years. He has covered the hydrochloric, phosphoric and sulphuric acid markets for three years, as well as the sulphur and phosphate fertiliser markets for an additional three years along with plastics, paints and rubber for two major price reporting agencies. He started working at Feedinfo in February 2017 and has since researched and launched the feed phosphate, phytase and copper sulphate reports. He has also written several livestock and compound feed analyses, as well as one-off articles about various feed additives. He also writes regular freight and macroeconomic updates for the Feedinfo news website. He has worked at Agence France-Presse, the Global Journalist magazine, the Estrella de Arica daily in Chile, Nepszabadság Travel in Hungary and many international titles in London.

Jaume graduated in veterinary medicine and holds a PhD in animal nutrition. His research activities focused on poultry nutrition and product quality. Since 2004 he is working as a Senior Scientific Officer at the Feed Unit of the European Food Safety Authority. He is currently co-ordinating the work of the FEEDAP panel and has been involved in the working group on the revision of the guidance documents.

Mr Emmanuel Geneiatakis has been with FAMI-QS since 2009. He started his career in FAMI-QS as a quality manager in 2009. Since 2015 Mr Geneiatakis has been the Secretary General of FAMI-QS. His main responsibilities include, general management and development of the organisation, international partnerships, technical preparation, auditors training, regulatory compliance and supply chain integrity. Mr Geneiatakis is Agriculture Engineer major in Agribusiness. He is involved in Standardization Activities ISO CASCO, ISO/TC 34/SC 17 Food Safety and International Accreditation Forum (IAF) activities.

Anton is a consultant at Danish Technological Institute (DTI), specialised in insect production. Anton has exceptional interest and experience in working with insect biology and insect production and holds a masters degree in environmental biology and technological and socio-economic planning, from Roskilde University. At DTI, Anton has been involved in a series of R&D projects (WICE, inVALUBLE) and commercial assignments in bio-converting industrial bio-products into insect biomass intended for both feed and non-feed applications. Anton is responsible with conducting R&D work within the reproduction and production of black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens) at semi-industrial and industrial levels.

Maarten is Co-founder and Principal of Anterra Capital, an independent growth capital fund that invests in companies that are transforming the food supply chain. Anterra is backed by Rabobank (the world’s largest food and agriculture bank) and Fidelity and is presently the largest food and agriculture innovation-focused fund in the world, with offices in both Europe (Amsterdam) and the USA (Boston). Maarten has 10 years of private equity and venture capital experience and began his investment career with Rabo Private Equity in 2009. Prior to joining Rabo Private Equity, Maarten worked for the Rabobank-Rothschild M&A joint venture in London, where he focused on transactions in food and agriculture. Maarten holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Free University of Amsterdam, and has studied at the London School of Economics.

Hadden grew up on a dairy farm in Northern Ireland, obtaining a PhD in Agricultural Biochemistry at The Queen’s University Belfast, before spending 10 years in teaching and research in Animal Sciences at University College Dublin, Ireland, The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala and Montana State University, USA. He moved across to a commercial post in 1989, then to AB Vista as Global Services Director in 2004, where he is responsible for technical support worldwide to its developing feed additives business. He has more than 100 publications in ruminant, swine and poultry nutrition in the past 25 years. He also served as President (2007-2009) of the European Feed Additive and Premix Association (FEFANA).

Kees has been active for more than 35 years in the international feed business, holding senior positions in leading global feed companies (DSM, Provimi-Cargill, Nutreco-Trouw Nutrition). The focus of his career has been commercial feed formulation in monogastrics and nutritional value of feed ingredients and feed additives, including gut health aspects. He is currently an Independent Nutritional Consultant. He holds a masters degree in Animal Science from the Wageningen University.

David has lived and worked in Europe, North America, the Caribbean, Africa and South East Asia and has extensive experience as an international advisory board member with food companies and financial service organisations on three continents. With his American business partner, David established, grew and sold a branded fresh food business which served supermarkets in the USA.

Tom was brought up on a drystock and arable farm on Ireland’s east coast and gained an honours degree in Agricultural Science and a masters in Animal Science from University College Dublin. Following graduation, he began a professional career as a Ruminant Technical Sales Specialist with Andrews Milling, Belfast. This was followed by five years with Elanco Animal Health, focusing on Technical Sales of its ruminant and pig animal health and digestive enhancer products. He then entered the feed premix business with Inform Nutrition Ireland and subsequently joined DSM Nutritional Products. Tom spent 18 years at DSM, where he was responsible for premix and feed additive business across all species on the island of Ireland, with special focus on supporting and developing the poultry business. Tom joined Moy Park in 2017 where he currently works as Nutrition and Innovation Manager (Feed), covering management of feed and premix formulation and design for grandparents, parent stock and all broiler categories.

Glen has more than 25 years of management experience, leading multinational and geographically dispersed teams, developing and implementing global strategies across Asia, Central Europe, South America, USA and Europe. Glen has managed companies through growth, market downturns, disease challenges and strong competition by restructuring and developing solutions to revitalise organisations. Glen held several senior management positions in the world’s largest porcine genetics business Genus/Sygen/PIC Group over several decades. In 2006, he successfully led a management buyout of the SyAqua Group, an Applied Aquaculture Biotechnology company, and spearheaded the group as Chief Executive. While at Topigs, he developed strategies as Regional Director in Asia Pacific and Africa. Glen was instrumental in the merger of Topigs and Norsvin, making it one of the most innovative global pig genetics companies and claiming the global number two position. Glen received his MBA from Bath University, after graduating in Agriculture from Seale-Hayne Plymouth University, and awarded a Post-Graduate Management diploma at Oxford Brookes University.

Kaleem Iqbal QuaziConsultant, Gulf Feed Formulators

Born in Hyderabad, India, Dr Iqbal finished his undergraduate studies in veterinary medicine and studied poultry nutrition for his masters degree. He began his carrier with TATA group which is one of the leading industrial houses of India. After a few years he moved to Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to join ARASCO, one of the largest feed mills in the Middle East. Among other things, he was instrumental in the commissioning of a premix plant and was responsible for formulation and production of feed and premix. After five years, he moved to Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) to start a new feed mill and premix plant for IFFCO which is one of the largest food production groups in the Middle East and was responsible for formulation, production and marketing. He moved on to become Chief Executive for the feed business and left this group as director of new projects after 20 years’ service. He worked for a couple of years in NFFPM Abu Dhabi as R&D manager before returning to India. He is currently self-employed as a Consultant to the industry.

Heather HayesDirector of Food Innovation, Devenish Nutrition

Heather graduated at Queen’s University Belfast with a PhD in ruminant nutrition. She joined the feed industry on graduating in 1990, where she worked as a multi-species nutritionist, later specialising in poultry nutrition. Heather joined Devenish Nutrition in 1993 as Poultry R&D Manager and was responsible for the design and management of the company’s Poultry Performance House, where nutritional trials are carried out. More recently, she took on the role of Food Innovation Director at Devenish, with responsibility for developing feeding programs to enhance the nutritional and eating quality of agricultural produce. The Food Innovation team successfully brought Omega chicken to market in June 2016 in partnership with Moy Park and Waitrose. Heather is from a farming background and lives with her husband and three sons in Lisburn farming dairy, free-range hens and renewable energy. During 26 years’ experience in the feed industry, Heather has become widely acknowledged for her ability to innovate and for her practical knowledge of the industry.

Edwini Kessie has a Doctorate Degree in Law from the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia, and Masters Degrees in Law from the University of Toronto, Canada, and the University of Brussels, Belgium, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the University of Ghana. He is admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Courts of England and Wales, New South Wales, Australia and Ghana. He has practised corporate and commercial law in Sydney and international trade law and European community law in Brussels. He has been a staff member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) since January 1995. He is currently the Director of the Agriculture and Commodities Division. Between 2012 and 2017, Dr Kessie took leave from the WTO to become the Chief Trade Adviser of the Pacific Island countries and CEO of the Office of the Chief Trade Adviser located in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Yoram Knoop (1969, Dutch nationality) has been employed by ForFarmers since November 2013 and has been CEO of ForFarmers N.V. since January 1, 2014 (at the time ForFarmers B.V.). As Chairman of the Executive Committee, he is ultimately responsible for all strategic and operational affairs. His current contract runs for a period of four years until the AGM in 2018. It will be renewable for another term of four years. On account of his position, he is a member of the European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation Steering Group. Before Yoram Knoop joined ForFarmers, he was Managing Director of one of Cargill’s operating companies, which focuses on producing premixes for, among others, feed companies. Dr Mendoza has co-authored a number of publications to include peer-reviewed articles, scientific abstracts and a book chapter.

Francesc Molist is a Veterinarian and Nutritionist and joined Schothorst Feed Research as a researcher and consultant in 2011. Since 2017, he leads the research group as Research and Development Manager. Schothorst Feed Research provides consulting services animal nutrition in more than 22 countries, representing a total of 9% of the world production of feed. During his Masters and Doctorate in Animal Science at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he collaborated with several major research groups in swine nutrition from across the world. Francesc is the author of numerous scientific publications, as well as articles in scientific journals and conferences.

Since then, he has served in several senior executive roles, always within the nutrition industry. Koen Schwarzer obtained his degree in Chemistry in Belgium in 1976, and followed that up with further education in microbiology and mycology. His interest for applied research and product development in animal health and nutrition brought him into the world of feed additives, where he has been active now for nearly four decades. With close ties to the market, Koen supported the development of many new products that, for example, secure the quality of feed and feed raw materials (non-corrosive preservatives) and improve feed digestion and nutrient utilisation. More recently, the devotion has been oriented towards gut health and animal performance (derivatives of butyric and valeric acid). Koen has been with Perstorp since June 2011.

Joerg Seifert is in charge of the effective management of the affairs association, including representing the interests of the specialty feed ingredients business towards EU institutions and other stakeholders, supporting the members, ensuring effective and efficient administration and providing leadership to the FEFANA staff team. He holds a university degree in Food Science and Technology of Humboldt University Berlin (Germany), as well as an MBA of Henley Management College (UK). Jim Shepard is Senior Director of Live Operations for Wayne Farms LLC, directing all aspects of live production including management of over 1,300 contract breeder, broiler and pullet farms, and oversight of the company’s hatcheries, feed mill operations, nutritional, veterinary and live transportation services for 11 production facilities in six states. His responsibilities span 62 million chickens in various stages of production across south-eastern US. Mr Shepard graduated from North Carolina State University with a BSc in Poultry Science and minor in Business and has 40 plus years of industry experience, including over seven years with Wayne Farms. During this time, the company has seen live production expansion, enhanced bio-security programmes at all facilities and construction of the largest start-up poultry feed mill in the nation. Dr Stefaan van Dyck defended his PhD thesis in organic chemistry in 2001 and began working for Kemin Animal Nutrition and Health (EMEA) as Chemistry Manager. His responsibilities in R&D increased over the years, resulting in the development of a wide range of feed additives, such as mycotoxin binders and absorption enhancers. In 2006 Dr van Dyck obtained his MBA from the University of Antwerp Management School. In 2008, he became a member of the EMEA executive team with responsibility for R&D, quality control/quality assurance, regulatory affairs, and lab services for customers. Dr van Dyck has held many roles within Kemin, including Global R&D Director, VP Marketing and Business Unit President of Kemin food technologies for Europe, Middle East and Africa. In 2018 Dr van Dyck moved back to the animal nutrition and health group of companies as President and CEO for the EMENA region. Dr Van Dyck is author of several peer reviewed publications and book chapters in the field of oxidation in food and feed and B2B marketing. Since the beginning of his professional career with Kemin, he has received several patents for the formulation of functional food and feed additives.

Ellen studied Animal Sciences at Wageningen University (the Netherlands) and graduated in Animal Health and Reproduction. After her graduation she started working on a PhD project at the Adaptation Physiology group of Wageningen University, investigating the relationship between energy metabolism and immunology in young pullets. After finalising the PhD project, she worked as a Postdoc at the Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht University. Since December 2009 she has been working at Schothorst Feed Research as a Researcher in Poultry Nutrition, with a special focus on the relationship between nutrition and intestinal health.

Filip van Immerseel is head of the Poultry Intestinal Health group as Ghent University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Pathology, Bacteriology and Avian Diseases. He graduated in 1999 as Master in Bio-engineering Sciences, has a second Masters degree in Lab Animal Sciences (2004) and a PhD in Veterinary Medical Sciences (2004). He currently has authored 190 papers in international scientific journals, multiple books, book chapters, and has multiple patents on intestinal health solutions for poultry. His group studies host-bacterium interactions aiming to develop diagnostics for gut health and prevention strategies for intestinal diseases. His group is internationally renowned for its work on salmonella and clostridium perfringens, intestinal inflammation, and microbial signals that are of vital importance for animal health.

Anisha ThankiBacteriophage Researcher, Department of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, University of Leicester

Anisha Thanki graduated from King’s College London, UK, completed her MSc in Infection, Immunity and Inflammation at University of Leicester, after which persuaded a PhD at Loughborough University, UK. Her PhD focused on identifying and utilising the potential of bacteriophages, which are viruses that specifically infect bacteria. Bacteriophages offer a natural alternative to antibiotics in treating bacterial infections and can be used to develop specific bacterial diagnostic tests. For her post-doctoral research, Anisha was funded by AHDB Pork and works in Professor Martha Clokie’s research group. Her research has focused on isolating bacteriophages against the enteric pathogens of pigs: salmonella spp. and Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, the causative agent of swine dysentery. Her aim was to identify a set of bacteriophages that could be used therapeutically to treat these infections in pigs and significant progress has been made. Throughout the project she liaised with the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the Veterinary Medicine Directorate, whose input has been valuable.

Kevin started working for Nuscience in 2015 as Product Manager. As member of the business unit ‘Health4U’, he is responsible for optimising the market position and financial results of different functional feed ingredient products. Kevin holds a master’s degree in Bioscience Engineering, as well as a masters in General Management, both obtained at the University of Leuven, Belgium.

Dr Alex Yiannikouris obtained his Doctoral degree in Biochemistry in 2004 from Blaise-Pascal University, co-supported by Alltech and the National Institute of Agronomic Research France following his bachelor and master’s degrees in Cellular Biology, Microbiology and Parasitology and a master’s degree in Human Nutrition and Food Science. Dr Yiannikouris joined Alltech France in 2004 while completing a post-doctoral commitment in environmental analytical chemistry in the laboratories of the National Council of Scientific Research France. He is currently Research Group Director (speciality chemistry), leading research and development programmes in mycotoxins and food chain contaminants and related mitigation strategies, as well as bioactive ingredient research. He is part of the Alltech Mycotoxin Management Team as the Research Director and field expert, and provides global technical support for departments worldwide. He has given lectures in more than 50 different countries with more than 100 scientific publications and international communications. He carries the title of Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Animal and Food Sciences of the University of Kentucky, US.

After his MSc graduation at Wageningen University (Animal Husbandry), Marinus van Krimpen worked as a nutritionist specialised in pigs and poultry for a feed company. Since 1999, he has been appointed as Researcher in pig and poultry nutrition at Wageningen Livestock Research. In 2008, he finished his PhD project regarding the effect of nutritional factors on reducing feather pecking behaviour in laying hens. Since 2010, he has been Senior Researcher in animal nutrition at the same institute. The focus of his projects regards nutritional requirements of laying hens and broilers, development of alternative protein sources, improving the phosphorus and nitrogen efficacy of pigs and poultry, improving bird welfare, and stimulating immune competence by nutrition.
