• Dytarious Johnson had his biggest day as a Panther against Tennessee State as the sophomore finished with 12 tackles including 2.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Johnson is currently second on the team in total tackles with 26 and his 4.5 tackles for loss rank him seventh in the OVC. Johnson’s previous career high for tackles was eight against Austin Peay in the final game of the 2017 season.

• Defensive back Mark Williams had an interception against Tennessee State last Saturday, one of three EIU turnovers gained in the game. For Williams it was his fourth career interception after picking off three as a redshirt freshman last season including one returned 73 yards for a touchdown against Indiana State. Williams also added a pass break-up as he has three on the season and 14 for his career.

• Eastern Illinois picked up two sacks with its pass rush last Saturday against Tennessee State. Nolan Dean and Sean Williams were credited with the sacks for the Panthers as EIU now has five team sacks for the year. Dytarious Johnson, Levi Watson and D’Mitri George are the other three EIU players with a sack this season.

• Due to some depth issues on the front defensive line, Eastern Illinois switched to a 3-3-5 defensive look last week against Tennessee State. The Panthers will be in that formation once again this week with seniors Josh Price, Taylon Shepard and Levi Watson the starters up front. The fourth starter from the four-man front, Terrell Greer, will be the first player in as he leads all defensive linemen this season with 23 tackles.

• Freshman Skyler Mayes had a big day on special teams for Eastern Illinois against Tennessee State as he was credited with five tackles. Mayes was in on the tackle when EIU forced its first turnover of the season, a fumble forced by BJ Ojo. For the year Mayes has played in three games on special teams.

• Joe Caputo was one of five Panthers to finish with seven or more tackles against Tennessee State as the junior linebacker is the Panthers team leader with 31 tackles this season. Caputo has added 2.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery this season. He had a season high 13 tackles in week two against Illinois State.

• Freshman Josh Delgado has served as the kickoff specialist for the Panthers this season with eight kickoffs for an average of 55.2 yards per kick last Saturday against Tennessee State. For the season Delgado has averaged 59.9 yards per kickoff this season with opponents having an average starting position of the 26 yard line on drives. He has two touchbacks on 21 kickoff chances with only one kick out-of-bounds.

• Nick Bruno was 2-of-3 on field goals and 4-of-4 on extra point attempts last Saturday against Tennessee State. That marked the first time this season that Bruno had attempted a field goal attempt. The redshirt senior is now 33-of-48 on field goals for his career which ranks him third on the EIU career list, one behind Cam Berra. Bruno is now 123-of-126 on extra points for his career ranking third all-time at EIU on that list. The ten points scored on Saturday moved Bruno into a tie for seventh on the EIU all-time scoring list with Erik Lora and Willie High with 222 points.

• After a big day on kick returns in week three against Indiana State, the Panthers kick return game was slowed down slightly against Tennessee State with EIU averaging 16.6 yards per return. Isaiah Johnson had three returns for 78 yards (26 ypr average) but Matt Reyna was held to two returns for 17 yards. On the season Johnson now ranks 16th in the FCS and third in the OVC at 27 yards per kick return. Reyna is 29th in the FCS and fourth in the OVC at 24.3 yards per return.

• This season all Ohio Valley Conference games will be streamed on either ESPN3 or ESPN+ as the conference has extended its media rights partnership with the company. EIU is currently slated to play two OVC Games of the Week on ESPN3 when the Panthers travel to Jacksonville State and then host UT Martin. All other games will be on ESPN+.

Dameron played football at Arkansas appearing in four bowl games between 1979-82. He is a 1983 graduate of Arkansas. Complete Coach Kim Dameron bio available on page 6 of EIU game notes...

TENNESSEE TECH HEAD COACH DEWAYNE ALEXANDER Dewayne Alexander is in his first season as the head coach at Tennessee Tech. Alexander played football at TTU and earned his degree from the school in 1989. He later served three different stints as an assistant coach for the program, most recently under head coach Watson Brown. He returned to Cookeville after working the 2017 season as the offensive line coach at East Tennessee State. He was a head coach at NAIA member Cumberland University from 2006-13 posting a 41-33 record.

SCOUTING TENNESSEE TECH Tennessee Tech is off to an 0-4 start this season with games against three nationally ranked FCS teams and one at FBS member Utah State. The Golden Eagles have scored three offensive touchdowns with all of them coming through the air. Quarterback Bailey Fisher is the team’s top rusher (191 yards) and top passer (453 yards) on the season. ON THIS DATE IN EIU HISTORY Sept. 29, 2012 - Future NFL Draft pick Jimmy Garoppolo passed for more than 400 yards for the first time in his distinguished EIU career with 453 yards in a 65-15 win over Austin Peay. Garoppolo was 18-of-31 in the game with five touchdown passes as he didn’t play in the fourth quarter. The total ranks as the sixth highest passing yardage total in school history. Garoppolo would finish his EIU career with seven 400-yard passing games.

WHEN 40 DOESN’T GO YOUR WAY Eastern Illinois scored 40 or more points for the second straight week as they lost on Saturday to Tennessee State. It marked the first time in school history that EIU has scored 40 or more points in consecutive weeks and lost both times. In EIU’s long school history the Panthers have only lost seven times when scoring 40 or more points.

KIM DAMERON(Arkansas, 1983) -- 5th Season (Career Record 24-23, 21-11 OVC)

Kim Dameron was hired as the 24th head coach in program history and the fifth in the NCAA Division I era in January of 2014.

The 2017 season may have been one of the most pulse stopping in recent years as the Panthers posted their third straight winning season under Dameron with all six victories coming by three points or less with a total margin of victory of 15 points for the year. Three of the wins were in overtime with two of them coming in double overtime. The wins on the season came in a variety of ways with two last play touchdown wins, two defensive stands, one game winning field goal and one game winning field goal block. EIU placed seven players on the All-OVC team and had defensive back Mark Williams earn Freshman All-American honors. In 2016 the Panthers quickly climbed into the FCS playoff picture as they knocked off FBS member Miami (Ohio) and beat No. 5 ranked Illinois State in the Mid-America Classic. Dameron would guide EIU to a No. 13 ranking in the polls at the midway portion of the season. The Panthers would face several key injuries late in the season and finished the year at 6-5 overall following a 24-0 win at Eastern Kentucky to end the season. EIU was 4-4 in the OVC. The Panthers had four players earn All-OVC honors with Devin Church and Seth McDonald both earning first team honors. Dameron returned the Panthers to the FCS playoffs in 2015 as EIU won seven of their last eight regular season games

to finish with a 7-4 regular season record. EIU lost in the opening round of the FCS playoffs at Northern Iowa. The Panthers were ranked No. 23 in the final FCS Coaches poll after making their 16th all-time FCS playoff appearance. During the season Dameron’s team produced six All-OVC players including co-Defensive Player of the Year Dino Fanti. Dameron would have his first player from Eastern Illinois drafted in May of 2016 when linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill became a sixth round selection of the New England Patriots.

In his first season Dameron coached the Panthers to a 5-7 record including 5-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference as the Panthers were in the championship race until the final weeks of the season. Dameron’s first career victory came on Sept. 20 against Austin Peay as the Panthers won 63-7. In the game EIU tied a school record for rushing yards with 413. The team featured three All-American selections including first team offensive lineman Collin Seibert and freshman All-American kicker Nick Bruno. Dameron’s squad had five first team All-OVC selections and five second team All-OVC honorees. The team was among the best on both sides of the ball in the OVC ranking second in total offense (11th nationally) and third in total defense.

Dameron spent the 2013 season as the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech where he directed a much improved defensive unit. The Bulldogs finished ranked 69th in the nation in total defense under Dameron’s direction after being ranked 120th the previous season. Dameron’s defense was the fourth most-improved squad in the FBS last season.

An experienced defensive coach with more than 15 years as a defensive coordinator Dameron took over an Eastern Illinois program that advanced to the FCS playoff quarterfinals last season. It is Dameron’s second stint in Charleston as he previously worked as the defensive coordinator at EIU in 2000 as a member of head coach Bob Spoo’s staff. During that 2000 season, Dameron helped transform the Panthers defense as they rebounded from a 2-10 season in 1999 to 8-4 and Ohio Valley Conference Champions in 2000.

Dameron spent three seasons as the safeties coach at Ole Miss as the team appeared in two Cotton Bowls. Two of his players were selected in the NFL draft as his pass defense unit ranked 11th in the NCAA in pass efficiency defense and 15th in pass defense. Prior to his stint at Ole Miss, Dameron was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Monroe as the program became bowl eligible at the FBS level for the first time in 2007 while also picking up a win over Alabama. The ULM defense led the Sun Belt Conference in fewest points allowed and ranking third nationally in turnovers gained. Dameron has previous stops as the defensive coordinator at Stephen F. Austin and as the secondary coach at Cincinnati and UNLV. He spent the 1999 season as the secondary coach in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts. He has previous FCS coaching experience on the staffs of Murray State and Missouri State where he helped coach both teams to FCS playoff appearances. Dameron began his coaching career as a graduate assistant

under Lou Holtz at Arkansas, his alma mater, after earning his degree. He was a four-year player for the Razorbacks from 1979-82 at wide receiver and defensive back. As a Razorback he participated in four bowl games including the 1979 Sugar Bowl. Dameron and his wife Debbie, have one daughter Krystle. Krystle and her husband Mike, gave birth to daughter Emma the day prior to Dameron coaching his first collegiate game as a head coach on August 28, 2014 at Minnesota. Dameron has since added another granddaughter Ava.

All eyes are on Rich Ehmke's (#6) record-setting 58 yard field goal that gave the No. 8 ranked Panthers a 31-30 victory over No. 11 Northern Iowa on the last play of the game in 1986. Often described as the "most exciting game in EIU history," the Homecoming win in front of 11,000 plus fans propelled the Panthers on to the conference championship that season.
