From your Vicar…. Dear friends Whenever I drop into one of our church buildings, at this time of year, there are normally a few tourists enjoying it. Many comment to me on how well kept our churches and graveyards are. Despite the rather unpredictable weather, the natural world around us flourishes with life and I'm aware that a considerable amount of work goes into keeping the graveyards beautiful. Thank you to all of you who work to keep our churches and graveyards in such good condition. Thank you also to those who lock and unlock throughout the year. Your efforts are not just appreciated by the local communities but enjoyed by many, many visitors each year. This month, a number of the Bible readings used in church have referred to Jesus as the 'bread of life'. One of the points Christ was making by describing himself in this way, was that he was inviting us to 'consume' him. To take him into ourselves. In other words, to let Him and His teaching infect our hearts and our minds, our thoughts and our feelings. One way we can respond to this invitation is through prayer. Our beautiful church buildings are wonderful, peace-filled places to pray. Places where we can hand the stresses and pressures of life over to God and find an eternity inspired perspective. With so many church buildings locked, we are fortunate indeed that ours remain open every day. Do drop in and enjoy them. Lastly, a good friend sent me the following advert for a trip he is organising. Rob was the guest preacher at the Tissington Well Dressings during my first year here. He's both knowledgeable and inspirational and I commend this trip to you. Wishing you Christ's peace,

Andy

A final, yet very sincere, thank you to all who have helped in any way with the Bank Holidays Fund Raising days, including J F Gibson Dairies who have supplied us with milk. We appreciate your continued support so much, and all we need now for next year is someone to organise some good weather!

Given the expected shortage of some produce this season, don't forget to do your fruit and veg shopping at the Harvest Service on Sept 23rd. There are bound to be some bargains...

Residents from all parishes are very welcome, there is no charge, but donations are welcome as this is a self-funding event. We also have a ‘book swop’ service at the coffee mornings so just bring along the latest book you’ve read and swop it for a new one. If anyone wants to donate cakes for the coffee mornings they will be very welcome. Vintage Tea Party & Bingo This will be held in the School on Sunday 16 September at 3pm until 6pm. Tickets will be £5 which includes tea and the first game of bingo. Everyone welcome. To book tickets tel Sheila Haswell on 350598. Sadly we have recently lost 2 long standing members of our community. Ian Macconachie who lived in the flats at Fenny Bentley along with his wife Sue, died recently in St Oswald’s Hospital. We send our sincere condolences to Sue and the family at this very sad time. We have also lost Gordon Webster, who died recently in Highfield House. Although Gordon had been in Highfield House for the last 4-5 years, prior to that he had lived and farmed in Fenny Bentley all his life. We send our deepest sympathy to Gordon’s family at this very difficult time.

An eagerly awaited film

A group of British retirees decide to "outsource" their retirement to Best

less expensive and seemingly Exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for

the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of

leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the

new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever

transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can

begin again when you let go of the past.

COFFEE MORNINGS We were lucky at our Coffee morning on July 18th to have 3 visitors, two walkers and a lady who was waiting for her husband and grandchildren to come back from a walk and fancied coffee whilst waiting, instead of just sitting in the car! The charity to benefit from donations was Hearing Dogs for deaf people and we were able to have a fleeting glimpse of Fudge, a hearing dog, brought along by Joan Ellis. A total of £60.00 was generously donated. A letter has since been received from Hearing Dogs who wished to thank everyone who had contributed and for our continued support in helping their valuable work during their 30th Anniversary year. They gave an example of how a gift of money will help more people like Simon who has a hearing dog called Foggy. ‘Bullied at school, Simon was left feeling isolated and lacking in confidence. Since he was partnered with hearing dog Foggy all that changed and he now leads a happy and fulfilled life.’ A letter was received also in early July from British Red Cross at Matlock to thank us for the generous contribution of £45.00 that had been raised at the June Coffee Morning. They appreciate our support very much. ‘As a result of our help the charity is able to continue to save lives and deliver the invaluable services that they currently do both at home and overseas.’ Only 8 people came to our Coffee Morning on August 15th but we had some lively discussions. Because there were so few of us, we decided to hold over the money donated (£30) until the next Coffee Morning in September as the charity chosen, Ashbourne Community First Responders, does such excellent work. Future dates: Sept 19th (charity as mentioned above) and Oct. 17th in the Village Hall at the usual time between 10.30 am and 12 noon. Everyone is welcome so please come along. RH

Thorpe Village Hall - Annual Report – 5 July 2012 The Annual General Meeting was held on 5 July. It was attended by the members of the committee but no one else. The Management Committee has consisted of David Froggatt, Bob Evans, Barbara Wager, Cyril Challinor, Clarke Lomas and Andrew Wager during the year since the last Annual Meeting on 28 April 2011. Phil Lee joined committee at the AGM and resigned later in the year. Andrew Wager has continued to act as chairman and secretary, while Bob Evans has continued as treasurer. Management Committee meetings were held on 28 April, 26 May, 12 August and 8 December 2011. Gill Frith has been the caretaker since 1992. The committee continues to be very grateful for her work. Work has started on a project to improve the toilets in the hall. The design has been worked up with an architect but it has not so far proved possible to find a builder who is prepared to do the work to an acceptable fixed price. The current committee members agreed to remain in office for another year, but would be grateful if the two vacancies on the committee could be filled. The committee are trustees for the charity but the duties are not onerous – the hall has a caretaker and shortfalls in funding are often met by the Dovedale Dash. The objective is to maintain the Hall so that it continues to provide a valuable facility for the local community. Two or three committee meetings a year are usual. The are several people in the village who organize social events but someone willing to help oversee the provision of a Village Hall to Thorpe would be very welcome.

Let’s face it, winter will be here again soon and we will need the central heating. So, once we get into August I am planning to do another round of those on the list who might need oil. Please could you check your tanks – anyone needing more than 200 litres, I’m sure we can get you a discount.

TISSINGTON ‘LIBRARY’

How many people know there is a thriving paperback “library” in the paper shed under Green Farm? Kept by Helen and Karen there are not only books but also back numbers of various magazines – all for your enjoyment at no charge. The idea is that everyone is able to place unwanted books and magazines there and also take whatever they want to read. With the idea of a Tissington Book Club being mooted why not help yourself to a book and/or take along your unwanted volumes.
