Parish Update

Thank you everyone for your great spirit of welcome and hospitality that you extended to Father Bob Con-nors during his stay with us these past seven weeks. Father Bob enjoyed his time with us. Now, we will welcome Father Jerry Hogan who will join us the first week of September to serve as a tem-porary parochial vicar until December. Father Jerry’s primary ministry is as the chaplain for traveling cir-cuses across America. Our new pastor, Bishop Reed, will take up residence on September 20 and will be with us at the Masses on the weekend of September 25. We eagerly look forward to welcoming Bishop Reed and Father Jerry to our Good Shepherd parish com-munity!

Father Jerry! We’re glad you are here

Father Jerry is the National Circus Priest travelling the Father Jerry grew up in Woburn and was or-dained to the priesthood in 1974. He has served as parochial vicar throughout the archdiocese of Boston and as campus minister at Emmanuel College and UMass Boston for 11 years before becoming the na-tional chaplain for travelling circuses. In this ministry, Father Jerry travels the globe to provide sacramen-tal and spiritual support and friendship for about 4,500 Catholics who work in over 60 travelling cir-cuses. Fr Jerry has been fascinated with the circus ever since he went backstage as a child and has

been president and chaplain since 1993.

“Name Tag Sunday” – September 25 Yes, it is what you think. In an effort to help Bishop Reed and Father Jerry (and, even ourselves) get to know more people by name, we are going to give “Name Tag Sunday” a try. What does it mean? The weekend of September 25th we will have name tags available for everyone to take as you come to church. After Mass you will take the tag with you and perhaps leave it in your car to have on hand for the next “Name Tag Sunday.” “Name Tag Sunday” will take place the last weekend of each month. This is just one small way to build meaningful community

and help everyone feel welcome.

25. Thank you for your understanding.

Mission Statement

We, the Roman Catholic community of Good Shep-herd Parish, strive to be a living sign of Christ's love in and for the world. In response to our Baptismal call, nourished by the Eucharist and guided by the values of the Second Vatican Council, we seek to continue the mission of Jesus Christ by welcoming, supporting and guiding all through prayer, sacramental celebration, service and education.

When was the last time someone really listened to you? We’re talking about the undistracted, full-attention kind of listening. That’s one of the ways Stephen Ministers care for others. Stephen Ministers care for those who are making that long journey through the valley of a life crisis. If you’re interested in serving in this way, contact Mar-cia Anderson 774-270-1114; Kathleen Fantoni 508-843-0490; Sister Roberta 508.650.3545. A new

training session will begin September 20.

Volunteer Needed Each Sunday a Eucharistic Minister brings Holy Com-munion to the residents of Sunrise. This special minis-try brings great comfort to the residents. We thank Judy Rich for her many years of service to the Sun-rise community. We are now in need of someone to replace Judy. It is a commitment of one Sunday a month and training will be provided. If you are inter-

ested in this ministry, please contact Sister Roberta.

BETHANY HILL BACK TO SCHOOL APPEAL begins this weekend. You can help a family purchase back to school clothing or supplies by purchasing a $25 gift card to a local store. Please consider taking a name tag from the poster in the vestibule of the church and returning it with your gift to the poster next week. Cards can be returned to either church or to the pastoral office if that is more convenient. For questions or to help with this appeal contact Kathy at [email protected]. Your generosity will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Music Ministry Nuestro Pequenos Hermanos NPH

Please consider sponsoring a university student or a

child living in one of the NPH homes. We are hoping

that 14 more children will be sponsored by GSP pa-

rishioners as well as 5 university students. We are

confident that the family of Good Shepherd Parish

will once more open their hearts to support the chil-

dren of NPH. Let’s add more faces to the photo col-

lage of sponsored students displayed at both church-

es!

In honor of Blessed Mother Teresa’s canonization to-

day, Good Shepherd Parish has been learning Mass

for Teresa of Calcutta. In churches all over the world

today, Father Bob Fabing’s Mass for Teresa of Cal-

cutta will be sung. We have learned this new Mass

setting quickly and have most of the sections learned.

We are adding the Lamb of God this week, and

next weekend we will begin learning the Gloria from

this Mass setting.

An invitation: Come join music ministry! There are many opportunities from singing in the adult choir which is a weekly rehearsal commitment to occasion-ally playing an instrument at Mass. If you are willing to share your talent, please contact Jody at [email protected] to arrange a time for her to hear you play or sing. This invitation is extended to everyone: adults, teens, and children.

The adult choir will be meeting on Monday evenings at 7:15pm beginning September 12. New members should contact Jody prior to the first rehearsal.

Youth Choir will be on Mondays or Wednesdays in

the late afternoon/early evening. Please send Jody

your child’s availability.

***Only 3% to go to reach goal!***

I am pleased to share that Good Shepherd Parish has raised $64,336 toward our 2016 Catholic Ap-peal goal of $66,106. Thank you to all who have helped make our campaign a success. No gift is too small! If you have yet to participate in this year’s Catholic Appeal, please pledge online at bostoncatholicappeal.org. On behalf of Cardinal Seán O’Malley and all who will benefit from your generosity, thank you for your support.

PARISH PAY-ELECTRONIC GIVING

Parish Pay is an easy electronic way to contribute to the Good Shepherd Parish. This method of giving is recommended to enable our parish to receive a consistent level of contributions each month, which makes it significantly easier to plan and budget. We invite you to consider including Good Shepherd in your monthly budget by signing up for Parish Pay. Visit the www.GoodShepherdWayland.org for the link. Thanks to all who have already enrolled!!

You may donate either by direct bank transfers or charge to a credit card. If you choose ParishPay as your method of giving, please notify the Pastoral

Office so we can discontinue your weekly envelopes.

Thank you!

Boston Sock Exchange Once again the Holy Spirit provided as we traveled to the Boston Common for our August trip. Although it driz-zled on the way to Boston and rained on the drive back to Wayland, it was dry throughout our visit. We were blessed to have lots of help from our brothers in line with unpacking the cars and distributing the dona-tions of water, sandwiches and clothing. They know many of the people coming through the line and help them find the items that they need. They always vol-unteer with smiles and a sense of humor. They bring

such joy to our visits!

When we finished with the donations and packed the cars, we concluded our visit by forming a prayer cir-cle on the Common to recite the “Our Father” togeth-er. It is wonderful to join hands with our brothers and sisters and pray to God our Father. When we pray together and unite as one family, we truly see the face of Christ in one another as we look around

the prayer circle.

DONATIONS: Your donations of NEW OR GENTLY USED CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR really help the homeless. Clothing and footwear donations as well as water bottles (16 oz. bottles) may be placed in

the blue bins at both churches.

If you’d rather give a monetary donation so that we may buy items in bulk, please make checks payable to “Good Shepherd Parish” with "Boston Sock Ex-change" on the memo line and place the checks in the collection basket at Mass or in the blue donation

bins.

The MOST NEEDED ITEMS for our September trip

are:

New men's t-shirts, briefs and boxers (M-3X) and women's new briefs (sizes 5-7)

TIMID DELIBERATION? Writing in Greek at the beginning of the 1st century CE, the anonymous author cautions wealthy, sophisti-cated young Jews not to be seduced by the “high learning” in the sciences, literary criticism, mathemat-ics and philosophy that surrounded them in Alexan-dria. He adopted the fictional persona of king Solo-mon, renowned for wisdom, wealth and military prowess, to underline the fragility of all human wis-dom. “The deliberations of mortals are timid, and un-sure are our plans”, he says (Wisd 9:14). “Timid or fearful” is the first meaning for the Greek word deilos in the newest complete dictionary of ancient Greek (2013), but the second is “contemptible, vul-gar”. Similarly, “unsure” (Gk. episphales) has “precarious, unsure” as a first meaning, but shades over to “dangerous” or “deceitful.”

It is the bane of translators to have to choose imper-fect equivalents. Ancient readers might easily hear both. Paul’s rhetorical dancing around a very sensi-tive issue in our second reading (Phlm 9-17) is an example of timid deliberation which many students find contemptible. A slave, named Onesimus (“Useful”) who apparently ran away from his Chris-tian owner, stealing something in the promise. En-countering Paul in prison, Onesimus was baptized. Paul, who also baptized Philemon and many of those who met in his house-church sends the slave back. He wants them to treat the slave as “beloved brother”. He even states that he is sending them “his own guts” (usually translated “heart”).

Well, what would Paul expect if the suffering apos-tle, prisoner had ripped out a section of his intes-tines? Forget the harsh penalties in Roman law for runaway slaves. Forgive restoration of any stolen property. Even – and that is the most timid part of this brief letter – give this “had” slave his freedom. Romans could, and did, reward loyal slaves with freedom after years of service. And if a slave was lucky enough to have a master with Roman citizen-ship, he got that in the bargain. But a thieving runa-way just because he’s now a baptized Christian?

At least let his earn it (eventually), a 1st century Ro-man audience might have said. “That letter is insane. Paul should have condemned slavery outright and ordered Philemon to free his slaves,” my students conditioned by “Black Lives Matter” style rhetoric insist. Instead he left the door open for centuries of cruelty by slave-owners to consider themselves up-right, moral Christians, they argue. Scripture does not always reflect the dimensions of moral insight that we have come to learn through living with the gospel. Pheme Perkins
