A ‘Loving’ after-partyIf you think races, after-parties and charities are awesome, don’t miss The Awe-some Race’s after-party Sunday, Sept. 8. Teams of two will have been racing around Vancouver completing challenges and winning prizes, but those of you not competing can still feel like winners by treating yourself to one of the always amazing Loving Spoonful events — after-party style. For $5 you can join in on the fundraising festivities, nosh on BBQ from Nester’s, mingle in the Rus-sell Beer & Barefoot Wine garden, Shazaam the DJ set and cheer on the winners at the ocial ceremony. It all goes down at the Strathcona Community Centre (601 Keefer) from 5pm to 11pm. A Lov-ing Spoonful provides free, nutritious meals to people living with HIV/AIDS in the Greater Vancouver. Stanley Park at the libraryThe party’s not over for Stanley Park. On Sept. 8, local historical groups will ll the Vancouver Public Library’s Special Collections oor with fascinating dis-plays that showcase why the park has been so much a part of the city’s psyche for the past 125 years. We fell in love with this photo from the event’s poster. Taken in the 1890s, it shows the Georgia Street entrance, looking north, with what was called Coal Harbour owing underneath the bridge. (The signs warn drivers not to go faster than a pedestrian could walk.) Poet Pauline Johnson later named the area west of the bridge Lost Lagoon because when the tide went out and the land became mudats, she lost her place to canoe. The area under the bridge was lled in in 1916 to create the articial lake and in the late 1930s, this strip of land was widened to include the causeway road leading to the newly built Lions Gate Bridge. Our thanks to the Vancouver Public Library for the photo and information. The exhibition is only from 1 to 4:30 and is free. For details go to VPL.ca.

Jazz trio does trios tributeBill Coon is a guitar-ist who has played with some jazz greats over his 25-year professional career. Miles Black has a few notches in his jazz belt too, having played piano with the likes of Max Roach and Harry “Sweets” Edison. And Jodi Proznick is no slouch as an in-demand bassist, becoming one of Canada’s “top call” artists. Together they are Triology, a nod to the trios of Oscar Peterson and the man who inspired Peterson, Nat King Cole. On Sept. 12, they’ll be playing at Roedde House as part of the West End museum’s monthly concert series (the second Thursday of every month at 7pm.) They’ll be featuring classic standards as well as original tuns by the trio’s members. Tickets are $15 and available at BrownPa-perTickets.com. Details at RoeddeHouse.org.

Flashback-festIn 1966, the West End was the most densely populated neighbourhood in North America, with 100,000 people bringing it to life. Lavish mansions were converted to boarding houses and a forest of apartment buildings sprung up. As decades passed and Vancouver grew up around it, the West End retained much of that era’s vintage charm. The West End Community Centre (870 Denman) invites you to capture that feeling and immerse yourself in ‘60s-themed nostalgia with the West End Fest this weekend, featuring Rolling Stones tribute band ‘Tongue’, face painting and more. Free, for all ages, Sept. 7 from 11am to 3pm. WestEndcc.ca

Real Housewives of Vancouver’s Reiko Mackenzie revels in her love for both at Luxury Supercar Weekend

By Kerry Vital

To car lovers or Real Housewives of Vancouver fans, Reiko Mackenzie is instantly recognizable. Her stable of cars includes such beauties as a Ferrari

458 Italia, a Lamborghini Murcielago and two custom Ferrari 599 GTOs.

Last year she brought three of her cars to the Luxury & Supercar Weekend, where two of them won second place in their respec-tive categories and she won the Chairman’s award for her enthusiasm for cars. This year, she will be a judge in the Modied Supercar category.

“My love for cars started in high school when I opted to take mechanics class over home economics for my last two years of high school,” Mackenzie says. “I’ve done all the basics and helped rebuild an engine. Just working with the parts was truly fascinating to me.”

She’s come a long way from her rst car, a “leaky” 1979 Honda Civic. “Eventually there was nothing we could do with the engine, but I tried!” she laughs. “I used to see those old convertible 300SEL Mercedes, and I wanted one. I have owned a 500SEL at some point so my dream was fullled there.”

Something that links all of Mackenzie’s cars

is their power. “The Lamborghini Murcielago was my rst track car, and some may ask why; it’s a hard car to drive track, especially manual shift. It was a challenge, but I love a good challenge and I felt strong driving that car.”

Mackenzie’s favourite car is her white Fer-rari 458 Italia. “It was denitely designed for both city driving and track,” she says.

The Luxury & Supercar Weekend is in its fourth year. It’s at the VanDusen Botanical Gardens on Sept. 7 and 8 and will be double the size of what it has been in the past.

Among the events taking place will be displays in honour of the 50th anniversary of Lamborghini and Porsche 911 and the 60th anniversary of Corvette.

There will also be a collection of luxury boats, yachts, helicopters and modied luxu-ry cars and supercars, among other displays. There’s also Vancouver’s largest outdoors designer fashion stage for Fashion Saturday; John Fluevog has designed an LSW driving shoe, with only 100 pairs for sale.

A lot of work goes into choosing the cars that will appear on the weekend, something that the chairman of automotive selection, Nigel Matthews, is intimately involved with. “I’m looking forward to the Canadian unveil-ing and debut of the 2014 Pagani Huayra,” Matthews says.

Mackenzie echos that, saying, “Last year I was fortunate to take the Bugatti Veyron for a spin out to the UBC highway. Maybe I will have a chance with Pagani this year, ngers crossed!”

Among the cars on display this year will be models from Jaguar, Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati, among

many others. “Rumour has it that LaFerrari will be

present, the new Enzo version,” Mackenzie says. “That will be a sight to see!”

Matthews himself is a long-time car lover. “I have oil running through my veins and always will,” he says. “My daughter has inherited it too!”

As a licensed automotive technician who worked on Rolls-Royce and Ferrari cars for more than 20 years, Matthews has always been happy to get under the hood.

“I changed my rst transmission at the age of nine,” he says. “I grew up on a large

estate in England. My brothers and I played tag in cars. We had a large in-house work-shop and full-time mechanic. He took me under his wing because he could see I had a huge interest in machinery.”

Matthews’ rst luxury car was a 1962 Alvis TD-21 Drop Head Coupe. “This is a very signicant hand-built British sportscar and would fall into the same category as an Aston-Martin or Bentley,” he says. “Queen Elizabeth II used to drive a new one as her personal car. She still owns it and it is in the museum at Sandringham House.”LuxurySupercar.com

When Jason Sarai’s brother asked him to suggest something to wear, it wasn’t “go into

my closet and pick out a shirt and pair of slacks for me.” The busy Chicago doctor wanted Jason to do the fashion opposite of the full monty: go to the store, buy the clothes from head to toe and then lay out what goes with what.

What are brothers for?A short time later on Facebook,

Sarai’s friend posted a photo of actor Ryan Gosling in a scene from Crazy Stupid Love and tagged him saying, “I want to dress like [Gosling.]”

The fates were colliding and Sarai — who has a degree in kinsiology from SFU, where he played on the varsity soccer team, taught tness, worked as an investment advisor at RBC and recently became general manager of Catalyst Kinetics’ tness division — once again found himself on a new life path.

He turned his love — and understand-ing — of fashion into Style by Sarai.

Some of his clients are, like his brother, too busy to shop. Others are in a fashion rut, going to the same stores to buy more of the same style of clothes. Then there are those who want to break out of the black or grey stranglehold but aren’t condent about how and when to add colour.

Sarai meets with them to nd out where they are now in their sartorial choices and where they want to be. He assesses what clothes suit their aspirations and body type and, know-ing where he can nd the best t in both categories, goes to the store to scout out options. His suggested items will be waiting for the client who comes to the store to try them on and make decisions. (He says his clients buy 90 per cent of what he’s chosen.)

It’s not about spending a lot on clothes. Some high-end designers have a certain body type in mind, and not all men’s bodies are the same. It’s important to be familiar with the brands and how they t.

Once the clothes are in the client’s closet, Sarai will go and take photos of how to mix and match everything

— including what’s already there — to create various outts right down to the socks.

He takes a photo inventory so if the client emails to say “I’ve been invited to the Luxury Supercar Weekend at VanDusen Garden,” Sarai will email back with photos of an appropriate outt from the client’s wardrobe, or suggest another trip to the men’s store.

“I’m simplifying their life,” he says. And making it look a whole lot better.

The secret to launching a 35,000-sq.ft. retail store was revealed Tuesday, Aug. 27, and it’s as simple as ‘think pink’. The Victoria’s Se-cret agship location at Robson and Burrard

moved a rumoured $381,000 in lingerie and beauty products on opening day, with shoppers queuing up as early as 5am. Sources say it was the largest open-ing in Victoria’s Secret history, and that wasn’t even the day the “Angel” was there.

But you probably aren’t interested in corporate expectations and Canadian retail trends (a recent study by consultancy CBRE puts Canada at sixth among top destinations for retailers that are seek-ing beyond-borders expansion). You want to know what 28-year-old model Lindsay Ellingson had to say during her quick stopover in the city to cut the ribbon, lunch with media and meet-and-greet fans who lined up in the rain Aug. 29, right?

Well, these men did. We asked a handful of Vancouver men what they would ask Ellingson if they had one-on-one time with the Victoria’s Secret model in a segment we’ve dubbed ‘Three minutes in Heaven’:Desmond: Is there any sort of rivalry between Vic-toria’s Secret models and Sports Illustrated models? Lindsay: No, there’s really not. I personally don’t know any SI models. As models, you are competing against yourself constantly, not other girls, because we’re all so different. It’s a constant competition for how good can I be, how much better can I be.Mario: Do you have an “Angel” nickname?Lindsay: Just my initials, L.E. Josh: What is your dream runway song?Lindsay: That’s a tough one. I like anything with a really good beat. There was this one show in 2005, where Gisele [Bundchen] opened a section — they were all in a Victoria’s Secret gift box, dressed for Christmas and this song by Body Rockers, ‘I Like The Way You Move’...It was the most amazing song

for walking on a runway. And I’m like, ‘Pleeease bring it back!’ But they would never, just because it’s always about what’s up to date, what’s new. Cam: Who would win in a ght, Victoria’s Secret Angels or Charlie’s Angels?Lindsay: [laughs] Victoria’s Secret Angels — there’s more of us!

We had mere minutes with the bombshell, so head to WEVancouver.com for more clever fan questions that were cut for time. And in Shop Talk next week, Elling-son shares her ‘Angelic’ beauty secrets.

Enter the world of sous vide. Sous vide means “under vacuum” in French, but the cooking technique refers to sealing food in airtight, food-safe, plastic bags, and cooking them

in a water bath at a controlled temperature for a certain length of time. It is comparable to poaching and slow cooking, but the heat is controlled and there is no loss of nutrients.

Started in the 1970s, it wasn’t until early 2000 that chefs started to experiment with it — an old-but-new way of cooking initially associated with ne dining restaurants. Now, however, it’s more mainstream and even available to the home cook.

Cooking the food at low temperatures for longer results in succulent, tender, juicy and avour-ful meats, seafood and vegetables. The forgiving technique prevents overcooking and allows for consistency.

While I am an advocate of the technique, not every cut of meat or vegetable tastes best sous vide. It is a “dummy-proof” way of cooking and rather simple to do, but it still requires an understanding of temperatures and cooking.

Outside of the culinary word, it’s still rather mysterious and menus often use “slow poached” to replace the words sous vide to make it easier for cus-tomers to understand. If you’re new to it, it is likely you’ve had it before without even knowing it and many of Vancouver’s top restaurants and favourite dishes are made using sous vide as a technique.

L’AbattoirIt’s one of Gastown’s favourite upscale, yet

non-ne dining restaurants. They recently earned a prestigious Four Diamond Rating by AAA and they’re still leaders in the area. About 80 per cent of the proteins on chef and co-owner Lee Cooper’s menu is sous vide at some stage. The very popu-lar Steak Diane, and my personal favourites, the sweetbreads (pictued below), octopus and warm steelhead are all executed sous vide. Don’t worry about overcooked steak, tough sweetbreads, chewy octopus, and dry salmon, they have it all under (temperature) control here. 217 Carrall St. | LAbattoir.ca

HawksworthOne of chef Hawksworth’s longest running menu

item is his 48-hour beef short rib. It is currently served with jicama, Chinese long bean, beech mushroom, kimchi, and black garlic, but the ex-ecution for the beef has stayed the same. Although I usually prefer short rib braised, sous vide short rib is thinly cut and has a steak like quality. Short rib is an affordable and tough cut of meat, but after a warm 48-hour bath, the collagen breaks down and it becomes soft, tender and incredibly avourful. This is only one of many items that are sous vide at Hawksworth.801 W. Georgia St | HawksworthRestaurant.com

Railtown CaféSo you don’t have to go to fancier places to

experience sous vide cooking, although executive chef and partner, Dan Olson, (Coach for 2013 Bocuse d’Or Team Canada) can cook at Michelin Star levels. Besides The Veggie, all Railtown Café sandwiches are made with sous vide proteins. Since the method uses less oil and fat, their meats are healthier with maximum avour. I rarely order chicken breast since it tends to be overcooked, but their Chicken “Club” chicken breast is sous vide and moist. It is topped with 72-hour sous vide bacon, tomato and avocado. 397 Railway St. | RailtownCafe.ca

Nathan Fong’s Passions

Nathan Fong and Maxine Davis outside the Dr. Peter Centre. Martha Perkins photo

On the 10th anniversary of his gala fundraiser for the Dr. Peter Centre, the goal is to top $1-million markBy Martha Perkins

Ten years ago, Lotusland Vineyards was introducing a new label called People and Their Passions. It celebrated well-known BC residents who lived their passions,

including the late Dr. Peter Jepson-Young, whose Dr. Peter Diaries on CBC chronicled his personal battle against AIDS.

Around that time, Vancouver food writer and stylist Nathan Fong was meeting with Maxine Da-vis, the executive director of the Dr. Peter Centre, a drop-in support centre and residence for people living with HIV/AIDS named in honour of Dr. Jepson-Young. At the time the centre was part of St. Paul’s Hospital but a $10-million capital campaign spearheaded by the Dr. Peter Foundation had raised money to build the just-about-to-be-opened facility on Comox Street.

The year before, Fong had hosted a cooking class at Barbara-Jo’s Books to Cooks to raise money for the effort and Davis approached him with an idea for a fundraising cocktail party for some of the donors.

Fong offered to tap into his vast network of friends in the food and hospitality industry. They decided to call the fundraiser Passions and, rather than hold it in a hotel ballroom, they felt it was important for people to become familiar with the centre itself. Since the centre was about to open that September (2003), the timing was perfect.

In that rst year, Fong convinced nine chefs to provide the food, 100 people enjoyed canapes and wine as they toured the new building and together they raised $7,000. On this, the 10th anniversary of Passions, the goal is to push the total amount raised past the $1-million mark.

It’s a number that makes Fong emotional and Davis says that, without him, the centre’s primary fundraiser would not be possible. This year’s event on Sept. 16 features 24 of Vancouver’s top chef vy-ing for the attention of people who will pay at least

$225 to attend. The chefs have a reputation for try-ing to outdo one another and the crowd includes a who’s who of Vancouver’s civic life.

“We are blessed Nathan’s putting his energy into helping the Dr. Peter Centre,” says Davis, admiring Fong for ignoring the stigma that can come with supporting an HIV/AIDs organization.

“Dr. Peter wrote a poem of afrmation that includes the line ‘But the energy that is in me will not be lost.’ Nathan has put his energy on top of Peter’s so a place like this can exist and provide the needed care.”

Davis says Passions is about “the power of one and how it extends itself to the power of many.”

“God bless Nathan,” says Shirley Young, Dr. Pe-ter’s mother, who, at 80, volunteers every Wednes-day morning. “He’s the most amazing and gener-ous man. He puts so much into this.”

Fong says the event gained even deeper meaning for him when he bumped into an old friend from West Vancouver at the centre. That friend was a resident. “That’s when it really hit home for me.”

He also tears up when Davis shares the story of a resident who died, his partner and his dogs by his side, while Passions was taking place. His partner later recounted how moving it was to hear the laughter and sounds of the people enjoying the event, knowing that their generosity helped ensure the centre can provide the medical, emotional and day-to-day support that people with HIV/AIDS need.

“When you ask, why do it?, that’s probably one of the answers,” says Fong.

To purchase tickets for the event go to DrPeter.org.

Many Okanagan wineries offer some of their wines at the vineyard only; they also create beautiful settings in which to try some of them. This is the tasting room at Tantalus. Supplied photo

Trip-worthy wines

September is my favourite time to tour Okanagan wine country. It’s picture-perfect since the grapes are all going

through veraison, the technical term for the onset of ripening when they start to change colour. It’s also a very busy time, as harvests begin, because there are visitors aplenty and the sun still shines bright throughout the day.

If you haven’t made the trip out this year, let this column be a gentle nudge that way. Keep in mind that many wineries will be offering wines in their tasting rooms that can’t com-monly be found in Vancouver. These small-batch exclusives are often some of their most interesting drops, so do take advantage when you come across them. Here are a handful of my favourite ‘tasting room-only’ BC wines to keep an eye out for.

Lake Breeze 2012 Bench White | Naramata, BC | $17 | LakeBreeze.caAn aromatic blend made from Pinot Gris, Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Ehrenfelser and Gewurztraminer, this lively white is more about the sum than its parts. All these varieties add up to a lip-smackingly juicy splash of lychee, papaya, citrus and charm. Sunshine in a glass.

Road 13 Vineyards 2010 Sparkling Chenin Blanc | Oliver, BC | $35 | Road13Vineyards.comFrom some of the oldest, gnarled vines in the Okanagan comes this wine of local legend. As a little selsh disclosure, Road 13 reached out to me earlier this year to assist them with putting on a couple dinners and

events. One of the top reasons I was happy to oblige was knowing that I could talk them into pouring this wine and I’d be able to snag a couple glasses for myself here and there. Made in the traditional Champagne method, this sparkling dazzles with brioche, pears, honeycomb and sage.

Tantalus 2011 Juveniles Pinot Noir | Kelowna, BC | $22.90 | Tantalus.caThe Pinot made from younger vines is a steal at 23 bucks, with a nice trufe and mushroomy nose plus plenty of plums and purple fruit on the palate. A good dusting of nutmeg gives it a little extra dimension, tying it all together nicely.

Quail’s Gate 2008 Dijon Clone Selection Pinot Noir | West Kelowna, BC | $65 | QuailsGate.comOne of the richest, most-complex and delicious Pinot Noirs in the valley, it’s a shame that this bottle is winery-only (and carries such a hefty price tag.) Pinot-geeks will adore this juicy wonder, gently swaddled in French oak, loaded with cherries, currants, cloves and nesse. Ultra-exclusive and there’s not much left of this vin-tage; dig deep into those pockets at least once to give this one a whirl.

Stag’s Hollow 2012 Grenache | Okanagan Falls, BC | $29.90 | StagsHollowWinery.comThe only 100 per cent Grenache in Canada will have you wondering why we don’t make more. With a similar weight and structure to a Pinot Noir, there’s a bit more of a weighty punch to this bottle, bursting with cherries, blackberries and a wee bit of ginger.

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

By Kerry Vital

MOSAIC Homes is bringing a touch of colour to Port Coquitlam with Fremont Blue, their new townhome development that’s a paradise for outdoor lovers. e second phase starts sales this month.

“is is the most exciting property today,” says MOSAIC’s Geo Duyker. “It’s just a beautiful place to live.”

Fremont Blue is bordered by the Pitt River, the 25-kilometre

Traboulay Trail and park land.“We’ve had people stop by the Home Store on their bikes

aer getting o the trail,” Duyker says. “It’s really rare to be able to live in this kind of setting.”

e homes themselves include open-plan layouts with plenty of space to relax or entertain, oversized windows and nine-foot ceilings throughout the main living areas to maximize your sense of space.

“We are doing what we do well in terms of creating beautiful

housing,” Duyker says. “MOSAIC has a long track record of building sought-aer homes.”

Fremont Blue will be part of the master-planned Fremont community, which will include shopping and restaurants. You’ll also be close by schools, leisure and recreation opportunities, as well as the convenience of the Port Mann Bridge, or commuting to Burnaby or Vancouver without having to cross the river.

“e whole neighbourhood is going to look a lot dierent in a few years,” says Duyker. “You could literally live, work and play here. is is the most signicant master-planned development in the region.”

Buyers will also have access to the Fremont Riverclub, which will include 12,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities, including a lap pool, outdoor cooking area, gym, tness studio and a great room with a big-screen TV, lounge, pool table, card tables and entertainment kitchen and bar, among many other things.

Homes start in the mid-$300,000s. For more information, visit mosaichomes.com, call 604-552-0319 or visit the Home Store at 2332 Ranger Lane, open between noon and 6 p.m.

Kitsilano is one of Vancouver’s most desirable areas, with its array of amenities and outdoor activities all in one place. Intergulf Development Group is now bringing an equally enticing oer to the neighbourhood with Kits360.

“Kits is one of the best neighbourhoods in Vancouver,” says project manager Macartney Greeneld. “We named the project Kits360 because there are amenities in literally every direction.”

at’s no exaggeration. Kits360 is just steps from the 5th Avenue Cinemas, shopping on West 4th Avenue and recreation on the seawall. You’re also minutes from South

Granville, Yaletown, Granville Island and downtown Vancouver, as well as Kits Beach, Kits Pool and the boardwalk trail.

“Kits is a very vibrant community,” Greeneld says. “And that atmosphere can be found in the community of Kits360 as well.”

e homes are completed and move-in ready now, which Greeneld says is one of the big draws for buyers.

“ere’s been a lot of excitement around completion,” she says. “Many happy homeowners have already moved in, and there’s already a great energy within the building. is is denitely an opportunity you can’t miss. It’s a phenomenal place to live.”

e nal release of inventory at Kits360 features just 15 two-bedroom suites and penthouse homes, ranging from 776 to about 978 square feet. Many homes feature fantastic ocean, mountains or city views and space for outdoor entertaining.

“ey’re really the cream of the crop. e oorplans available give you lots of exibility depending on how you live your life,”

Greeneld says, noting that both downsizers and growing families alike have found their dream home at Kits360.

“Our oorplans are designed to make condo living a reality for our buyers with ex spaces for their home oce, nursery, or whatever they may need,” she says.

Each home is spacious and open, with plenty of room to entertain or relax.

e kitchens are particularly beautiful.“e kitchen is really the jewel of your

home,” Greeneld says. “It’s a huge focus for people and Intergulf did it right.”

e stainless-steel appliances are complemented by a modern stone backsplash high-gloss cabinetry and stone countertops.

“You can spend tons of time entertaining in here,” Greeneld says.

You’ll nd engineered laminate wood ooring throughout your new space, as well as over-height ceilings in most homes and a stackable washer/dryer. e bathrooms hold luxurious soaker tubs and plenty of thoughtful details.

“Older homes in Kits don’t have these features,” Greeneld says. “is is a rare opportunity to get this calibre of living and this address.”

e amenities at Kits360 are truly top-notch, including an expansive rooop terrace and outdoor barbecue with a garden, lounge and kitchen area, as well as a courtyard water feature and two fully equipped tness centres. ere is also a 24-hour concierge and bike storage space. With all the amenities available at Kits360, there’s an immediate feeling of luxury as you step inside the building. It’s also obvious that the project ts perfectly into the neighbourhood and everything that makes the area so great.

e nal release of two-bedroom homes at Kits360 start at $599,900. For more information, visit www.kits360.com, call 604-737-0360 or visit the sales oce at 1777 West 7th Avenue, open starting Saturday Sept. 7 from 12 to 5 p.m. daily except Friday, or by appointment.

Submitted photosKitsilano is a vibrant neighbourhood, and Kits360 is perfectly situated to take advantage of every amenity, above right. Among the gorgeous features you’ll find in your new home at Kits360 are stainless-steel appliances and high-gloss cabinetry, below right.

FINAL

Improving Vancouver’s infrastructure: Construction at the south end of the Burrard Bridge – Expect delays Effective August 26

vancouver.ca

The Burrard and Cornwall intersection at the south end of the Burrard Bridge will be under construction beginning August 26. This project will improve traffic safety and accessibility around the Burrard Bridge.

The improvements to the intersection will:

• Simplify the intersection by making it easier to navigate and safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to use.

• Improve safety and decrease travel time for pedestrians at the intersection by reducing the maximum number of pedestrian crossings from five down to two.

• Decrease the volume and speed of vehicle traffic coming off the Burrard Bridge onto Cornwall Avenue.

The replacement of expansion joints on the Burrard Bridge will also be coordinated with this work.

During construction, motorists can expect traffic changes, lane restrictions and delays and are encouraged to use the Granville Street Bridge.

The intersection will remain open and be accessible to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, and there will be full access to businesses along Cornwall Avenue and Vanier Park.

NEW PRICE!

By Jeff Nagel

The cost of owning a standard detached bun-galow in Vancouver now consumes 82 per cent of a typical household’s income.

That calculation, from RBC Econom-ics Research, is among the ndings in its recent housing trends report showing home affordability has taken a hit in BC in recent months, but is still lower than last year.

RBC’s home affordability measure compares home ownership costs — mortgage payments, utilities and taxes — to median pretax household income and provides plenty of fodder for those who think BC real estate costs too much.

The Vancouver measure of 82.2 for a bungalow is up 2.2 points from the previous quarter and is far above Toronto’s 54.5, Montreal’s 38 and Calgary’s 33.

The measure for BC as a whole also rose to 67.6 for bungalows, 72.8 for two-storey homes and 33.8 for condos.

In Vancouver, owning a two-storey home took 85.8 per cent of household income, while a condo took 40.7 per cent.

“The weakening in affordability is a bit disap-pointing and the latest setback disrupting the way to healthier housing market conditions in BC,” RBC chief economist Craig Wright said.

But despite the recent uptick in prices, Wright noted home ownership costs in BC are still lower than a year ago, due to a nearly two-year-long cool-ing stretch in the real estate market.

Fears of a steep drop in Vancouver real estate appear to have abated, he said, suggesting the “market correction has run its course and that the risk of a catastrophic outcome has greatly moder-ated.”

10 questions to ask when hiring a RealtorHome owners should interview a few po-

tential Realtors before choosing the one to sell their homes. Here are some questions to ask, suggested by HowRealtorsHelp.ca.

How long have you been in the business?A freshly-licensed Realtor can do a wonder-ful job and will have up-to-date training; those in the business longer bring more practical experience to the table.

What is your average list-to-sales-price ratio?A listing Realtor should hold a track record for negotiating sales prices that are very close to list prices.

How will your marketing plan meet my needs?Specifically, how will you sell my home? Where and how often do you advertise? Will you show me a sample flier? How do you market online?

Will you provide references?Ask if any of the references are related to the Realtor. Ask if you can call their references with additional questions.

What separates you from your competition?Key phrases to listen for: assertive, available by phone or email, analytical, able to main-tain a good sense of humour under trying circumstances.

May I review documents that I will be asked to sign?A good Realtor makes forms available to you before you are required to sign them. Ask to see agency disclosure, listing agreement, seller disclosure.

Can you help me nd other professionals? Your Realtor may be able to provide a list of service providers who can help with things

such as home inspection, staging, renova-tions, legal and financial advice. Get an explanation if you see the term “affiliated”. It could mean the Realtor is getting compen-sation from vendors.

How much do you charge?Real estate fees or commission are negotiable and may vary from broker to broker.

What if I’m unhappy with the service? If you sign a listing agreement with the Realtor and later find that you are unhappy with the arrangement, will the Realtor let you cancel the agreement?

What haven’t I asked you that I need to know?Pay close attention to how the Realtor answers this question, because there is always something you need to know — always.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): “No regrets? Really?” asks author Richard Power. “I have regrets. They are sacred to me. They inform my character. They bear witness to my evolution. Glimpses of lost love and treasure are held inside of them; like small beautiful creatures suspended in amber.” I’m going to suggest you do what Powers advises: “Do not avoid your regrets. Embrace them. Listen to their stories. Hold them to your heart when you want to remember the price you paid to become who you truly are.”

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): Urbandictionary.com says that the newly coined word “orgasnom” is what you call the ecstatic feelings you have as you eat especially delectable food. You are in an excel-lent position to have a number of orgasmic-like breakthroughs in the coming week. Orgasnoms are certainly among them, but also orgasaurals, orgasights, and orgasversations — deep thrills resulting from blissful sounds, rapturous visions, and exciting conversations.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): If you were about to run in a long-distance race, you wouldn’t eat a dozen doughnuts. Right? If you were planning to leave your native land and spend a year living in Ethiopia, you wouldn’t immerse yourself in learn-ing how to speak Chinese. Right? I hope you’ll be smart about the preparations you make in the coming weeks. This will be a time to prime your-self for the adventures in self-expression that will bloom in late September and October. What would you like to show the world about yourself?

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): When the Constitu-tion of the United States originally went into effect in 1789, it was only 4,543 words long. The Bill of Rights, enacted in 1791, added a mere 462 words. By contrast, India’s Constitution is 117,000 words. If you create a new master plan for yourself, Cancerian — as I hope you will — a compact ver-sion like America’s will be exactly right. You need diamond-like lucidity, not sprawling guesswork.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): There are two scientic terms for tickling. “Knismesis” refers to a soft, feathery touch that may be mildly pleasurable. The heavier, deeper kind of tickling is called “gargalesis.” If playfully applied to sensitive parts of the anatomy, it can provoke fun and laughter. Both of these will be rich metaphors for you in the coming days. I suggest that you be extra alert for opportunities to symbolically tickle and be tickled. (P.S. Here’s a useful allegory: If you do the knisme-sis thing beneath the snout of a great white shark, you can hypnotize it.)

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): In his “Song of the Open Road,” Walt Whitman wrote some lyrics that I hope will provide you with just the right spark. Even if you’re not embarking on a literal journey along a big wide highway, my guess is that you are at least going to do the metaphorical equivalent. “Henceforth I ask not good fortune — I myself am good fortune,” said Uncle Walt. “Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need noth-ing. Strong and content, I travel the open road.”

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): Mystical poet St. John of the Cross (1542-1591) was one of Spain’s greatest writers. But not all of his work came easily. When he was 35, a rival religious group imprisoned him for his mildly heretical ideas. He spent the next nine months in a 10-foot by six-foot jail cell, where he was starved, beaten, and tortured. It was there that he composed his most renowned poem, “Spiritual Canticle.” Does that provide you with

any inspiration, Libra? I’ll make a wild guess and speculate that maybe you’re in a tough situation yourself right now. It’s not even one per cent as tough as St. John’s, though. If he could squeeze some brilliance out of his predicament, you can, too.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): The American natural-ist John Burroughs (1837-1921) traveled widely and wrote 23 books. “I still nd each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think,” he testied, “all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see.” Let’s make that longing for abundance serve as your rallying cry during the next two weeks, Scorpio. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you have a cosmic mandate to push to the limits — and sometimes beyond — as you satisfy your quest to be, see, and do everything you love to be, see, and do.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): Punk icon Henry Rollins did an interview with Marilyn Manson, rock and roll’s master of the grotesque. It’s on You-tube. The comments section beneath the video are rife with spite and bile directed toward Manson, driving one fan to defend her hero. “I love Marilyn Manson so much that I could puke rainbows,” she testied. I think you will need to tap into that kind of love in the coming days, Sagittarius: erce, intense, and devotional, and yet also playful, funny, and exhilarating. You don’t necessarily have to puke rainbows, however. Maybe you could merely spit them.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): If you want to know a secret, I talk less crazy to you Capricorns than I do to the other signs. I tone down my wild-eyed, goddess-drunk shape-shifting a bit. I rarely exhort you to don an animal costume and dance with the fairy folk in the woods, and I think the last time I suggested that you fall in love with an alien, angel, or deity was... never. So what’s my problem? Don’t you feel taboo urges and illicit impulses now and then? Isn’t it true that like everyone else, you periodically need to slip away from your habitual grooves and tamper with the conven-tional wisdom? Of course you do. Which is why I hereby repeal my excessive caution. Get out there, Capricorn, and be as uninhibited as you dare.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): Germany’s Ostwall Museum displayed a conceptual installation by the artist Martin Kippenberger. Valued at $1.1 million, it was called “When It Starts Dripping from the Ceiling.” Part of it was composed of a rubber tub that was painted to appear as if it had once held dirty rainwater. One night while the museum was closed, a new janitor came in to tidy up the prem-ises. While performing her tasks, she scrubbed the rubber tub until it was “clean,” thereby damaging the art. Let this be a cautionary tale, Aquarius. It’s important for you to appreciate and learn from the messy stuff in your life — even admire its artistry — and not just assume it all needs to be scoured and disinfected.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): In her novel White Ole-ander, Janet Fitch suggests that beauty is something to be used, “like a hammer or a key.” That’s your assignment, Pisces. Find practical ways to make your beauty work for you. For example, invoke it to help you win friends and inuence people. Put it into action to drum up new opportunities and hunt down provocative invitations. And don’t tell me you possess insufcient beauty to accomplish these things. I guarantee you that you have more than enough. To understand why I’m so sure, you may have to shed some ugly denitions of beauty you’ve unconsciously absorbed from our warped culture.

This week’s Horoscopes are on page 20.

E-MAIL: [email protected] All rants are the opinion of the individual and do not re ect the opinions of WE. The editor reserves the right to edit for clarity and brevity, so please keep it short and (bitter)sweet.

rant/rave!

You called me a moron?Last week’s Rants contained three responses to my previous letter thanking a responsible building owner for dealing with a problem, that is way out of balance in terms of populations — sea gulls. Sea gulls’ droppings contain E. Coli, as well as another serious contaminants. To the “Water+Gulls” writer, you called me a moron? There are gulls through-out the lower mainland; a recent visit to Langley centre alarmed me because the populations are so numerous. The gulls no longer live close to the ocean because of overpopulation. Why are they on our buildings if they are water birds? Have you seen the populations that are aggressive on Gran-ville Island? Have you seen the mass of gulls at the city dump? Have you seen and heard the gulls on every building in the DTES, Howe Street, Kits, Commercial Drive, Burnaby, Surrey, Langley? The roof of the elementary school near Davie is white with droppings. I see 50-60 gulls daily using that building to live, nest, and occupy. To call someone down for speaking up (you call it whining — “na-ture’s alarm clock”) says more about you than the person who took the time to speak up about an issue that is becoming problematic. I applaud the building owner’s foresight and care. I have not seen a sea gull on his roof since the controls were installed. Nothing changes unless people speak up about it, and that is a freedom still available to Ca-nadians who care. Last week’s responses have little to do with the content of my rant, but are reaction-ary and show a complete disregard for what I am saying. People actually write in to complain about the complainers and call them names? That does not contribute anything to the conversation.

DK

Sea gull satireCome on, Bob (Aug. 29 Rants, Water = Gulls). You have to admit the gulls can be noisy with all their love making and chick raising. But then, I thought the original piece was satire. I loved it.

Gary, Land of the Crows

Mother’s natureIt breaks my heart that some heartless creep killed some gull chicks because he didn’t like the peeping chicks’ cries. We live by the sea — seagulls! I was enjoying watching the mother gull and her three chicks on a rooftop grow from chicks to tiny birds. The mother gull was a good mother as she would shoo her chicks back when they got too close to the edge. I watched them op and try again as they stretched out edgling wings. There are worse noises like grass-cutters, sirens, workmen hammer-ing, loud car radios, drunks yelling, etc. Now I can see the mother gull sitting on the roof by herself calling out for her chicks. I hope the pr--k gets the bad karma he deserves.

Mel

Do something!Re: Cull to arms, Rants, Aug. 29: It is totally disgusting, and illegal, that workers (thugs) killed three baby seagulls. I applaud you for calling Ot-tawa and reporting them. What they did is illegal and is also grounds for discipline. It is also grounds for nes and/or criminal charges. This may apply to the company where they work. I strongly urge you to contact the SPCA and report them. Second, please contact the owner of the company they work for, with the details of the occurrence. Advise them that the police will be contacted. Third, please report the occurrence to the owner of the building where the thugs were working as they may be vicariously liable. Fourth, please contact the Vancouver Police ASAP. This is the third time in as many weeks as I have heard a story like this.  Animal cruelty can never be tolerated.

Tom McKenna

Kind spiritsThank you to the kind young men who took my mother to the hospital after she broke her wrist in Paci c Spirit Park. So grateful that you took the time to help a stranger in need.

A grateful daughter

West End gratitudeI had a bike accident August 30 at Robson and Bidwell. The moment I hit the pavement I was sur-rounded by helping and concerned people who did everything from applying rst aid to calling my friends. A special shout out to the young Asian Canadian guy who obviously has some medical training who looked after me very professionally until the ambulance arrived, and to the management and staff of Blends for their help...I have lived in and around the West End for over 40 years and this just reminds me of what great neighbours I have.

A thankful cyclist

NATALIE LANGSTON, 24TV host, reporter and producer for City Lights and Fitness on the Run for Novus TV, Ch 4. NatalieLangston.com (launching Sept.)

How did you decide what you wanted to do for a living? During computer class in Grade 4, I announced to my entire class that I wanted to be an anchorwoman when I grew up. Some people had no idea what I was talking about, others laughed. My teacher smiled and was very supportive. I’ve gone after it ever since.

Describe your dressing room rider or fantasy rider:M&M peanuts for sure, and lots of hot lemon water. Fresh fruits and vegetables are also a must. I like to stay healthy and they are easy snacks to eat on the y. It also doesn’t hurt to have a stick of Tide to Go for those emergencies, especially wearing white — I can be a bit of a klutz. Some safety pins and bobby pins are great to have, too. Also, a charger — my iPhone and iPad are always dying!

Describe your personal fashion style: I think my personal fashion style re ects who I am: modern, classy, well pulled-together, tailored and maybe a little daring!

Proudest accomplishment? I have been the youngest reporter for Novus TV. They give me a lot of freedom that someone of my age is not normally accustomed to. I am constantly pitching, producing and hosting episodes and am so proud to have been working for the network for more than four years now.

I am also proud I was given the opportunity to interview Team Canada during the 2010 Olympics for Global BC. It was de nitely an experience I will never forget.

Favourite: • Drink: Champagne bubbles and green tea. • Store: Holt Renfrew, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bergdorf Good-man, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Harrods. • Designer: I am absolutely loving everything from Pink Tartan. I wore a colour-blocked navy and pink dress for part of this photoshoot (photo online) and the way the dress just hugs my body in all the right places is something I look for in the pieces I wear. • Perfume: I adore Flowerbomb by Victor & Rolf. • Blog/magazine: Vogue, InStyle, Refi nery29, Polyvore.com.• Local charity: I really support Dress for Success and how much they do for women looking to get back into the work force; we women need to stick together. And I am on the ex-ecutive board as an ambassador for the Miss World Canada Organization for Beauty with a Purpose.

What’s in your purse at this very moment? Gum, lip gloss, translucent powder, wallet, keys, water bottle, iPhone and earphones, ballet ats for after events, and wallet-size photos with my mom and my boyfriend.

What is your most sentimental wardrobe item? I am very close with my grandpa — he’s been like a dad to me. He’s getting older and his health isn’t doing too well. He is always sending for things in the mail and cracks me up with the crazy things he receives. When I was younger he sent for a gold locket and surprised me one day with it for no reason, just because he thought I would like it. I will always cherish this piece of jewelry.

Where do you shop for everyday wardrobe items? I love my girls at Topshop — they always have out ts ready to go for whatever shoot or event I have. I’m in and out in no time and, for me, that’s super important.

Where do you look for that after-hours ‘wow’ outfit? Defi nitely The Room at the Bay or BCBGMaxazria.

What fashion event do you look forward to the most every year? Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and New York Fashion Week. Locally, the Deighton Cup, which is the fashion event of the summer here, and Diner En Blanc, the all-white party, which originated in Paris 25 years ago.

Something that surprises people about you: I’m actually quite a homebody...When I’m not shooting or at an event, I love curling up at home with a good book, candles and a glass of wine.

Last time you cried and why? Yesterday, during the commercial with Sarah McLachlan and those sweet little puppies. They are just so cute and get me every time.

What’s your style/beauty life saver? Red lipstick and dry shampoo; I couldn’t live without them. Dry shampoo makes bad hair days, great again!

People tell you you look like: My mom, and Julianne Hough.

What’s coming up for you? Reporting for View the Vibe restaurant video guide at TIFF. I am so excited to be a part of the lm festival this year. I live for the rush of red carpet interviews; there is so much pressure and excitement in the moment and in a blink of an eye it’s over.

I will be back for FMA Shop and Dine Nov. 19-24. I’m putting it together with my executive producer at FMA En-tertainment Weekly and long-time friend, Andy Chu. Shop and Dine week is both an industry and consumer event. It features the rst-ever FMA online fashion week, including a number of live-stream exciting events, online giveaway and sales promotions; retailers’ VIP shopping events; runway fashion shows with showroom shopping and exhibits; musi-cal and artistic performances; VIP receptions; art exhibi-tions; and dining out experiences throughout the city.

I will also be in London, England in February for an exciting gig to host the High Commission of Canada, a part of Men’s Fashion Week. I’m so excited to be a part of it.

TIPS FOR SHOPPING FOR FALL? I just shot an episode for City Lights at Topshop for Fall fashion trends, so I have the scoop: emerald greens, super-sized swing coats, fur coats, classic prints like tartans, tweeds, and argyle. Layering is huge this season so don’t be afraid to mix textures with your pants, skirts, and tops. A sheer dress over leather pants allows you to layer without looking bulky. Pastels are big for fall as well as leather and PVC (shiny/pleather look).

After 17 years in television, it’s all radio, all the time

By Martha Perkins

Mike Eckford is talking about Syria. The more he talks, the more animated he becomes,

expressing some pretty strong opin-ions about the rest of the world’s role in the civil war. “You’re not the world’s policeman; you don’t get to say who’s wrong. You’re throw-ing bombs in there, you’re killing people....”

When the conversation switches to the loss of our personal privacy, the hits keep coming. He’ll tell you what he’s read, who he’s talked to, what he thinks. “It’s a question of how all those tiny pieces of infor-mation can be used to distort and manipulate....”

This side of his personality may come as a surprise to people who loved his quirky humour as co-host on The Rush, the Vancou-ver television show that is more lifestyle than hard news.

But his family wouldn’t be surprised by his ravenous appetite for serious fare. After all, when the Eckfords gather around the table at his parents’ house on the Sunshine Coast, dinner conversations can last three hours, with everyone ex-pected to dish on what they think.

Listeners to his new show on

Mike Eckford makes The Shift

CKNW, The Shift, soon won’t be surprised either. They’ll discover that while he brings his funny side to the show, he’s revelling in the opportunity to let the entire Mike Eckford out.

“I don’t want to be anyone’s talking mouth,” he says, amazed by how much freedom he’s been given on the show. “I want to be part of a genuine conversation and

not be afraid to say what I think.”He’ll still use humour but more in

the way that Jon Stewart does it on The Daily Show. Although Eckford’s an apostle of radio, his personality is more Doubting Thomas.

And you needed a healthy dose of doubt when reading all the speculation about what’s been go-ing on on in Vancouver radio land for the past few months.

Eckford had been doing television for 17 years and as much as he loved working with long-time cohost and friend Fiona Forbes, “it felt like I’d been doing the same thing for a long time.”

Meanwhile, for the previous year, he’d also been co-hosting the Bro Jake show on Rock 101 and felt like he’d found a home on radio. “Jake is the most creative

guy I know in this industry. He’s a fertile mind,” Eckford says with unabashed admiration for the radio veteran.

In late January, Eckford sud-denly quit The Rush, leaving Forbes with a series of guest co-hosts. Then, in July, equally to everyone’s surprise, Corus Entertainment announced that, after 17 years, it wasn’t renewing Edwards’ con-tract. (It’s been reported that Ed-wards will cohost a new morning program with Dave Pratt on Team 1040 starting Sept. 9)

Eckford didn’t see it coming. “I was looking for chaos, but not that much chaos,” he says with a smile. He says Corus told him, “We have a plan, we will be doing something with you, but we’re not yet ready to tell you.”

Finding out the station wanted him to move its programming away from sports and into news was “a marriage of everything I’ve done.”

That said, radio has been “an absolute shock to me.” As much as he thrives in the role, the task of lling three hours of silence pro-voked “ball-clenching fear.” The show of cially débuted Sept. 2 but last week Eckford enjoyed a “dry run”. Providing his own review of the rst show, he says, “I feel like a trapeze artist who went out, totally blew the routine and somehow landed it.”

“Over time,” he says, “we’ll nd our voice and I think it will be a real re ection of what I think Vancouver is — young, funny, insightful and interesting. You can laugh and get really serious.”

The Shift is weeknights from 7 to 10pm on 980 CKNW; you can also download the CKNW app for free.

“I want to be part of a genuine conversation and not be afraid to say what I think,” says Mike Eckford, the new talk show host on CKNW. Rob Newell photo

Run size for sockeye boosted to four million; 16 million pinks expected

By Jeff Nagel

An improving run of sockeye salmon returning to the Fra-ser River has prompted shery managers to reopen shing for

other salmon species that had been closed to guard against any accidental bycatch of sockeye.

Paci c Salmon Commission of cials now estimate around four million sockeye are on track to return due to more sh arriving later than anticipated.

That’s still below a pre-season forecast of 4.7 million but it’s much better than a few weeks ago when salmon watchers feared just two million would return.

Recreational angling for chinook, pink and chum salmon opens Friday morning below Mission and for pink and chum above Mission starting Saturday morning.

First Nations also have the go-ahead to sh for chinook, chum and pink on the lower Fraser for food, social and ceremo-

nial purposes.A limited commercial shery for pinks

is also expected.Water temperatures have cooled some-

what from dangerously high levels earlier in the summer but shery managers still expect 70 per cent of returning sockeye will die on their journey upriver to the spawning grounds.

As a result, all of the sheries are direct-ed to release any sockeye that are caught.

“We are getting early reports of sh arriving at the spawning grounds in good condition,” said Jeff Grout, DFO regional resource manager.

Sockeye run on a four-year cycle, so the sh now migrating are the offspring of the disastrous 2009 run, when just 1.6 million sockeye returned, prompting the appointment of the Cohen Inquiry.

There had been high hopes that this would be the year that stock begins to rebuild.

While DFO of cials say there are now signs that will happen, they say the return and the river con-ditions are still far from what they had hoped.

The pink run has also been upgraded, from 14 million to an estimated 16 million sh, and that number is expected to climb further.

Fishery of cers have been sweeping the river for sockeye poachers.

So far 10 boats and 66 nets have been seized with 29 investigations underway that are expected to lead to charges.

Tom Hlavac, from DFO’s conservation and protection branch, said the majority of suspected poachers caught are First Nations, but added others are non-aboriginal.

Trudeau’s pot admission reefer madness to U.S. lawyer

Federal Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s admis-sion he smoked marijuana after becoming an MP – and the ensuing urry of similar disclosures by other Canadian politicians – has a US immigration lawyer shaking his head.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw him admit to it,” said Len Saunders. The Blaine, Wash. lawyer says Trudeau and any other admitted Canadian pot smokers – high pro le or not – should expect to be refused entry to the US.

Saunders warned earlier this year he was seeing large numbers of BC residents permanently denied entry to the US after they admitted to past marijua-na use when questioned by American border agents.

Washington State’s vote in late 2012 to legal-ize, tax and sell marijuana has created confusion, leading some BC residents to believe pot is now a non-issue when heading south.

Saunders says the drug remains illegal under US federal law and someone with no criminal record who merely admits historic marijuana use can be barred because it’s a crime of “moral turpitude.”

Saunders said he hasn’t seen any new cases this summer of Canadians refused entry for admitting pot use.

He said the pending changes in Washington State – stores selling marijuana are expected to open there within a year – may have left US Cus-toms and Border Protection of cials unsure how to apply the law right now.

But Saunders said he still believes it’s folly for any Canadian to publicly disclose their past pot use. In BC, the list includes Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, Kamloops Conservative MP Kathy McLeod and former Maple Ridge Coun. Craig Speirs, who is leading Sensible BC’s petition campaign in that area to force a provincial referendum on marijuana reform.

TransLink of cials say they’re con -dent their new Compass card will work well and be used by the vast majority of transit passengers despite

criticism that those who pay in cash aboard buses won’t be given a transfer for SkyTrain.

The new payment system will undergo a beta test by 10,000 volunteers — twice as many as TransLink hoped to recruit — start-ing Sept. 9 ahead of a full launch later this year or early next year.

Riders will tap their smart card on blue reader disks as they board a bus or SkyTrain and tap out again on exit — the system will register the trip length and debit their ac-count accordingly.

The transfer incompatibility of bus-issued tickets — blasted on social media as a double charge for those who pay cash — stems from TransLink’s decision not to retro t either all the bus fare boxes at an extra cost of $25 million or else faregates at SkyTrain sta-tions for $9 million. Neither x would have worked for more than a few years and were deemed not cost-effective. But not everyone hates TransLink’s decision.

Surrey transportation advocate Daryl Dela Cruz says those who pay in cash infuriate him because they slow down bus boarding.

“It causes delays and holds up lines, especially on long and busy bus routes,” Dela Cruz said. “It’s almost a vendetta I have when I see the number of people who pay with cash fares.”

He predicts faster boarding as more people swipe cards instead of dropping coins and expects more buses will actually run on time as a result.

Mike Madill, TransLink’s vice-president of enterprise initiatives, said convenience is the

main aim of Compass, but he agreed fewer cash payments should speed bus boarding.

“It’s more ef cient and it keeps the lines moving,” he said, noting the new card can be read in less than a third of a second.

Cash payers who don’t want to pay again if they transfer from bus to SkyTrain can avoid that by getting a Compass card, so they’ll have a strong incentive to switch.

About 6,000 passengers a day pay in cash on buses and transfer to SkyTrain – 1.5 per cent of the 400,000 daily bus users.

Other transit systems, including London and Paris, don’t allow cash-paid transfers from bus to trains, and Madill said London

saw its share of cash payers drop from 30 per cent to about 2.5 per cent after its similar Oyster card rolled out.

For now, TransLink will simply mirror the existing three-zone system and fare structure with the new cards.

Reloadable cardThe vast majority of transit users who use a monthly pass or a book of pre-paid Fare-Saver tickets are expected to easily make the switch to Compass cards and nd it much less hassle.

No longer will they have to go to a retail store each month to buy a new pass or book of tickets. Most will buy a month pass on their card online or over the phone, as well as at vending machines at SkyTrains and some other locations.

Those who link their Compass account to their credit card or bank account can have it automatically buy a new month pass at the rst of each month. An auto-load feature will let users program their card to automati-cally add a preset amount whenever the balance drops below $5.

For those who prefer the equivalent of soon-to-be-eliminated FareSavers, which of-fer a discount on a book of 10 tickets, Madill said any amount of prepaid cash put on a card will qualify for a 14 per cent discount.

That’s less generous than the current 24 per cent discount on Faresaver cash fares.

Asked why FareSaver users will pay more under Compass, of cials say FareSaver discounts had become “arti cially in ated” in recent years because TransLink was only allowed to increase prices for cash fares, not the prepaid tickets. They say the discounts will become consistent under Compass.

Cash can also be used to buy Compass cards at station vending machines in

amounts as low as $6.

Low-income optionsResponding to concerns that poor residents without bank or credit card accounts will face obstacles, Madill said there will be some additional locations, including a yet-to-be-announced retailer, where machines will dispense cards for cash.

Anti-poverty groups that hand out tickets to low-income clients to get to job inter-views or appointments will be allowed to buy bulk Compass cards, valid for a single use for up to 90 days.

Some question marks remain.TransLink doesn’t know how many riders

will forget to tap out with their card as they exit the system and then get charged for travelling the default three zones when they may have only travelled one.

And it’s not clear what bugs the beta tes-ters may uncover.

Asked if TransLink considered using some discounts or incentives to encourage early sign-ups — as TReO successfully did in getting motorists to register to pay tolls on the Port Mann Bridge — Madill said it was unnecessary.

“We really think that the card will sell itself,” he said. “We think the adoption rate is going to be pretty high right out of the gate. For the customer, it’s going to be way more convenient.”

After Compass cards are offered to the general public, the old and new systems will run in parallel for a number of months before the activation of the new faregates — the other part of the $171-million system.

It should reduce fare evasion but more value is expected from better data on where transit users go, guiding future transit system improvements.

Test time for TransLink’s Compass card

Mike Madill, TransLink vice-president of enterprise initiatives, holds a new Com-pass card. He predicts the Compass card will be widely embraced for its conve-nience. Jeff Nagel photo

RIDDICKStarring Vin Diesel, Katee SackhoffDirected by David TwohyCashing in on the sci- cult following generated by 2000’s Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, director David Twohy returns to helm action star Vin Diesel in his mysterious, futuris-tic ex-con role as Riddick.

This time around, our anti-hero is left for dead on a desolate planet and must contend with all manner of erce alien creatures. The only way off the hostile environ-ment is for the renegade to activate an emergency beacon that alerts a band of dangerous mercenar-ies, all looking to cash in on a hefty bounty for his head, and a mysterious man from Riddick’s past with a personal score to settle.

Twohy’s latest installment may satisfy a B-

movie crowd looking for cheap thrills but overall, despite some imaginative conceptual design, the entire affair is dull and rather lifeless. The main issue stems from the derivative writing,

which strives for a lm noir motif, but never takes off thanks to Diesel’s one-dimensional acting and perpetu-ally monotone delivery. In fact, most of the actors in Riddick either seem not to care they’re in the movie or are cartoonishly over the top.

The special effects in the lm leave a lot to be desired with heavy reliance on dated CGI that fails to provide any sense of real tension or immersion in setting. There is no question of Riddick’s fan-generat-ed appeal; what is really disappointing is that Twohy seems completely disinterested in taking audiences of a different journey and offering something a little more original.

Good riddance to disappointing Riddick

Goh Ballet’s Nutcracker is a go

By Martha Perkins

Yes, Virginia, there is a Sugar Plum Fairy. This past spring, when the Westside

Church bought the Centre in Vancou-ver for the Performing Arts, Goh Ballet

thought it had lost the only appropriate place to stage its beloved Nutcracker. The Centre was the right size and came at the right rental price for the independent ballet school.

“The audience is able to enjoy quite an intimate and wonderful, clear view of the stage, so the experience for both the dancers as well as the audience is quite a wonderful match,” executive director Chan Hon Goh told the CBC in May.

City politicians got involved, local cultural leaders got involved. Everyone wanted to save the Goh Ballet’s Nutcrack-er which, for many people, is akin to sav-ing Christmas.

Goh Ballet has entered into an agree-ment with Westside Church to ensure the Nutcracker will go on.

For the rst time, it will offer performanc-es over two weekends — December 14 (2pm and 7:30pm) and 15 (2pm), and Dec. 20 (7:30pm), 21 (2pm and 7:30pm) and 22 (2pm).

Joining the local dance students will be two dancers from the Royal Danish Ballet and dancers from China’s premier dance academy, making it a high-calibre, interna-tional production.

Tickets are on sale. Keep up to date at GohBallet.com.

Have you ever contemplated the enormous truth to be found in a librarian’s due-date stamper?

It “contains every date that ever was,” says the Librarian in Glen Berger’s Underneath the Lintel, “a curiously funny drama about life’s most curious stuff.” Your birth can be found in the revolving numbers, as can your death. Spin a date, any date, and the Librarian can tell you something about it.

“It’s all in here. All the joys and trials of history,” he says (or will say) over 10 nights of the Vancou-ver Fringe Festival.

January 25, 1971? That’s the day when “Helen Shattock is walking her dog in Dayton, Ohio [and] a frozen block of urine from the lavatory of a Pan Am jet falls, and hits her on the head, killing her instantly.”

Of course, the type of mind that retains such arcane facts is not a mind at peace. And such a mind can go down many serpentine paths when it contemplates the arrival of a book that’s 113 years overdue. The wheels on the stamp go round and round....

“It’s a hero’s journey of a nebbish little librar-ian whose horizon of life doesn’t extend beyond the stack of books in front of him,” says David Cameron, the one man behind KingBaby Produc-tions’ version of the popular one-man play. (It’s been translated into six languages and the Librar-ian’s home town, Hoopdorf, Holland, has become a pilgrimage for fans. Richard Schiff, Toby of West Wing fame, played the Librarian in the West End version.)

The Librarian, who prides himself on an ency-clopedic memory, is thrown into turmoil when he can’t gure out where the book has been for all these years. And why is it being returned now? By whom? He simply must nd out.

“He thinks he’s on the track of a higher truth,” says Cameron, who won won the best male actor award for the role at the Theatre BC festival. (The production, directed by his wife Jackie Minns, also garnered ve honourable mentions.) “He has to tell the story to free his soul.”

In following the clues, including a drycleaning slip found tucked into the pages of the overdue book, the Librarian comes to believe that that mys-terious “A” who borrowed the book is none other than Ahasuerus, the Wandering Jew who is cursed to wander the earth until the Second Coming after mocking Jesus on the way to the Crucixion.

“I love the character, this person who thinks he’s so smart and yet gets tripped up by life,” says Cameron.

Travel millennia in just 72 minutes when David Cameron brings Underneath the Lintel to the Vancouver Fringe Festival. Jackie Minns photo

It’s also the perfect sort of play for the Fringe Fes-tival, in part because there’s only one character and a minimal set. A challenge for an actor, even one as ambidextrous as Cameron, “it’s like going on a ride at Playland. You’re a different person when you get off. I need deprogramming at the end of the play.”

Cameron and Minns thrive on being part of the Fringe. For all its intensity, all the performers get to “piggyback on each other’s energy,” creating a whole that is bigger than its dozens of parts.

The Fringe Festival marks the end of the Under-neath the Lintel run for Kingbaby, which will now focus on creating its next original production. Its Mad Mabel’s Christmas is a perennial favourite, es-pecially in their “hometown” of Bowen Island, and La Vita Grande won best comedy at the Victoria Fringe Festival several years ago.

Underneath the Lintel is at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre (1895 Venebles) on Sept. 5-8 and 10-15 at various times. Tickets at VancouverFringe.com.

You never know what you’ll find at Fringe...

Eleven days and 91 shows. If anyone can do it, it’s the Vancouver Fringe Festival. From Sept. 5 to 15, “you see some fantas-tic independent theatre, laugh, cry, experience free live music, meet kindred spirits, stuff yourself with Vancouver’s finest food truck fare, and stagger home fat and happy. All you have to do is buy a ticket.”

Life on the Fringe
