Thornton Celebrates Anniversary of Torosaurus Fossil Find

It’s been just over a year since a construction crew, working on the site of Thornton’s new Public Safety Facility discovered a rare dinosaur fossil. Scientists from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS) were called, and arrived quickly to confirm it was a dinosaur fossil. “My heart was racing,” said DMNS Curator of Dinosaurs Joe Sertich. “I realized it was a pretty important dinosaur find.” Still, it would be another week more before they realized just how important the fossil was.

After initially clearing away some of the dirt at the site, Sertich said it appeared to be a triceratops skeleton and skull. “This is probably one of only three skulls of triceratops found along the Front Range area,” said Sertich. According to Sertich, most fossil finds along the Front Range are from the Ice Age, just 10,000 to 12,000 years old, but this fossil was much older, and much rarer. After excavating the fossil, and taking it to the museum, scientists realized it was the remains of a rare Torosaurus, similar to a Triceratops. “This dinosaur has been laying here for at least 66-million years,” said Sertich. “I’m over the moon right now about this dinosaur fossil.” The triceratops and torosaurus were very similar. But, while cleaning the fossil, museum staff found telltale signs of a torosaurus; “a delicate frill with two very large holes.” DMNS staff says this is the first recorded torosaurus find in Colorado.

The fossil is now housed at the museum, and a cast of the bones is at the discovery site, now named Fossil Ridge, for visitor and school tour viewing. “A lot of times these will be plowed up and they won’t be recognized,” says Sertich. “We’re really lucky in this case that it was recognized as a fossil and we got the call.”

Thornton Comprehensive Plan: Help Shape Thornton’s Future

The city is beginning a major rewrite of the Thornton Comprehensive Plan. The city currently uses the 2012 Comprehensive Plan. “The Comprehensive Plan provides a vision of what Thornton can be in the future for all aspects ranging from transportation to housing choices and from recreational amenities to employment opportunities,” says Thornton Policy Planning Manager Glenda Lainis. “The Comprehensive Plan serves as

a long-range guiding document for the city’s systems and services and allows for coordination with all of the detailed plans and implementation programs in which the city engages.” The Comprehensive Plan rewrite will be ongoing throughout 2018 and 2019 and will have two major phases. “In Phase I, the community will be involved in identifying the core values, vision and goals for Thornton’s future,” says Lainis. ”The rewrite of Thornton’s Comprehensive Plan document will be the focus of Phase II. This phase will incorporate the outcomes of the visioning process.” This process will include opportunities for community input at outreach events and community meetings, some of which are scheduled for September. For more information and to view upcoming events visit thorntontomorrow.com or send an email to [email protected] to give your comments.

Groundbreaking For New Affordable Housing CommunityConstruction has started on Crossing Pointe North, an affordable apartment building for seniors at 104th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. The 64-unit building is walking distance from the future commuter rail stop, bus stops, a grocery store and banks. “People who are at least 62-years-old and are at 60-percent of the area median income are eligible to apply for the apartments,” states Neighborhood Services Manager Nicole Jeffers. “Thornton residents who meet those qualifications will be given preference on initial lease up over those who live outside of Thornton.” The official groundbreaking took place on August 8 with members of Thornton City Council in attendance. Crossing Pointe North is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2019.
