Citizens urged to report

suspicious strangers to

prevent crime

A top-ranking official along with Police officers appealed to people

residing in the barangays to do their share in helping prevent crimes from happening by reporting to authorities unknown persons in their communities. Nacional “Nikko” Mercado, President of the provincial federation of the Liga ng mga Barangays, stressed the cooperation of the citizenry is vital, particularly residents of a certain barangay, in informing their tanods, officials, the police the moment they

Start the PAMANA road project at our end, Buan mayor pleads

San Jose de Buan (Samar) Mayor Ananias Rebato pleaded to the

PAMANA Technical Working Group to allow the construction of the PAMANA road project at their end. The mayor faced the visiting PAMANA TWG during the joint Municipal Peace and Order Council (MPOC) meeting on Wednesday. The road project that is supposed to reach Buan will be passing first, barangays of Paranas and Motiong towns for a total of 38 km road stretch. “While Paranas and Motiong folks are enjoying, my people are suffering from the bumpy roads in the approach of Buan,” he lamented. LtCol Edgar Yerro of the 546th Army Engineer Brigade said that the mayor’s request can be done. If only to give them satisfaction that we truly sympathize with their accessibility problem, it can be done,” he said. Samar Provincial Engineer Divine Mate also backed up Yerro to accommodate the request of the Buan

mayor. “We will just revise our plans but it can be done, I am happy that they will finally feel our services.” Mate said. Emy Bonifacio, PAMANA manager meanwhile, appreciated the mayor and his people for being honest. “At least because of this meeting, we learned about their concerns, I am sure it can be done,” said Bonifacio as she assured them of its approval. “Maybe this is why Mayor Rebato invited us to the 38 kilometer ride to Buan to feel what they are feeling when they go about the bumpy ride,” she jested. Presently, with another P100 Million allotted to the PAMANA road, at least 35% of the Lokilokon-San Jose de Buan road are now concretely paved albeit one lane only. “The critical parts in uphill climb are concretely paved with double lanes to ensure that approaching vehicles can make it to the top,” said Engr Ishar Ignacio of the provincial engineering department.

The PAMANA road project has partnered with DILG and the provincial government in the implementation of the PAMANA road project in Samar.

“We welcome the results of the 2013-2014 Global Competitiveness Report, which shows the Philippine economy continuing its upward trajec-tory in rankings. From a low of 85th place when the Aquino administration took over, the Philippines has pro-gressed 26 places to rank 59th in the

“This impressive performance was highlight-ed in the report, which cited the Philippines as among the ‘most dynamic and rap-idly improving economies in terms of competitiveness’,” matud ni Lacierda .

concerned, rice consumers need not worry, Director Zarraga continued, because aside from the present inventory, the Region is expecting rice shipments from Cebu totaling 293,000 bags. Meanwhile, commercial rice price monitoring of NFA showed that the present modal regional average retail price of well milled rice and regular milled rice is pegged at P40.67 and P37 per kilogram, respectively, Director Zarraga said. In the month of August, rice price was recorded at an average of P39.42 per kilogram for well-milled rice and P36.08 per kilogram for regular-milled rice or an increase of P1.25 and P0.92 per kilogram, respectively. Zarraga said that the slight rice price increase during this period of the traditional lean months (from July to September) is expected since this is the period when there is no rice harvest. Furthermore, the NFA Manager disclosed that the cereal agency continues to sell government rice at P27 per kilogram.“Our stocks are good quality iron-fortified rice that helps to combat iron-deficiency anemia,” Manager Zarraga said. “We issue only good quality rice stocks to our 1,655 NFA accredited retailers region wide,” she added, as she invited the non believers to inspect NFA stocks in the warehouses to check the rice quality. to make it to the top 5 finalists in the national search with a hope to be the grand winner. Mayor Javier gave his all out support to the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) program of DSWD as he considers it as an inspiration to poor families. With the CCT, the less fortunate or those who have less in life feels of the government’s help. noticed unusual movement or an unfamiliar face in their barangay. By doing so, they contributed immensely in the prevention of a crime before it can actually happen, granting such information turned out positive, Mercado, village chief of barangay Abgao, Maasin, and son of Gov. Roger Mercado, disclosed during the Action Center Kapihan sa PIA held at the provincial Capitol lobby Wednesday. He acknowledged the importance of “pito”, a whistle, as a tool in deterring a potential crime as it can call public attention due to its noise, but providing each citizen in the barangay a whistle may not practically make sense. Besides, barangay tanods were fully equipped with whistles, among other necessary gadgets for peacekeeping, but the civilian police in the villages can only do so much without the support of the community as a whole, the younger Mercado, an ex-officio member of the provincial board, pointed out. Deputy Philippine National Police (PNP) Provincial Director Supt. Jacinto Cesar echoed Mercado’s views, adding that for this year’s National Crime Prevention Week

Citizens urged... from page 2

celebration September 1 - 7 the “pito” has been highlighted as a symbolic medium for people to make use of in expressing their concerns, especially as a way of reporting acts that have great tendencies to become crimes. Cesar, however, cautioned the public on their high expectations on the results of their reports to Police, saying this has to go through a process, especially sensitive reports relating to drugs, and not just act on those right there and then.

He also called on the families and individuals not to be the source of crime themselves, saying most crimes began and ended with suspects using prohibited drugs. For his part Mercado reiterated that his family never tolerated their relatives, even how close, who are known pushers and ushers, saying that the recent successful police operations that netted suspects were clear proof.
