has agreed to have Dexter Bowling become a promotional sponsor of the prestigious 2011 Bowl-ing’s U.S. Women’s Open. As part of the agreement, Dexter captures the bowling shoe product line exclusivity for all marketing aspects of the historic event and the qualifiers leading up the finals.

The 2011 Bowling’s U.S. Women’s Open, sponsored by the Brands of Ebonite International, is

open to all female youth and adult bowlers in the United States and their international counterparts. The June 30, 2011 finals will be hosted on-site at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas (home of Super Bowl XLV). The event, scheduled to air on ESPN, is expected to draw one of the largest live viewing audiences in the history of the sport.

Dexter, the number one bowling shoe in the world, plans to use the new relationship to further its position of strength in women’s sports. “The BPAA and Ebonite have created an exciting, world-class event at a world-class facility,” said Bud Clapsaddle, V.P. Dexter Bowling. “We are excited to present our premier product line alongside the finest female bowlers in the world.”

More than 71 million consumers annually take to the lanes as bowling continues to be the largest participation sport in the U.S. Women represent 49% of all bowlers and since 2007, adult female annual participation is up 12.9% from 21.7 million to 24.5 million.

“We are proud to have Dexter aligned with the 2011 Bowling’s U.S. Women’s Open and all

marketing associated with this new, revitalized event,” said Steve Johnson, executive director of the BPAA. “As a true category leader, Dexter recognizes the surging popularity of bowling among women and the significant value behind the national and grassroots promotion plans.”

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSMALUCCI’S 243 AVE. TOPS SNUSBC FOR 2ND YEAR IN ROW

by Connie MarchioneLAS VEGAS—This writer got an email from Carl Malucci

with the surprising news. Malucci, Las Vegas informed that he recently checked out Southern Nevada USBC’s new book aver-ages for the 2009-10 season and was surprised to learn that he is the highest average bowler with 243 in SN USBC for second years in row. The second highest bowler behind Malucci is at 241.

Last year the marvelous left-hander was honored by SN USBC for his highest 246 average as the highest for the 2008-09 season. To repeat that lofty average in 2009-10 season, Malucci found it tough to do as he finished his two leagues at Red Rock Lanes with 243 and 241 as the best he could do. He is gratified to know that he has the highest for 2nd year n row.

This writer is also surprised and pleased too because he doubted Malucci would make it two in row with his 243. He thought, SN USBC has lots of better bowlers who could beat 243 but did not and that surprise him.

For the deaf bowling records, Malucci has the highest aver-age 246 and first to lead his local bowling association with two 240 plus averages also first to have three 240 plus averages in two seasons. The 2009-10 season marks the first time three deaf/ hearing impaired bowlers finished with 240 averages. Besides Malucci’s 243 and 241, Ken DeGroff finished with 240 in NLAC USBC and DJ Powell a 240 in his Indianapolis USBC. Wait! We still have not heard of others like John Wukasch, Jr. in Texas.

For DeGroff, it is his second 240 average season as he once averaged 240 in the 2003-04 season in Reading (PA) BA. De-Groff who did some research for this writer informed that Wu-kasch, Jr. a lefty had a remarkable 238 average for 90 games in the 2008-09 season. Also that he averaged at 244 for 39 games in the 2005-06 season and had 241 for 36 games in 2002-03 season, both of which hardly count as a full season.

We will wait a bit longer to see.

MARK FISSER PLACES 2ND IN WCST EBONITE SINGLES AT CAL BOWLLAKEWOOD...West Coast Senior Tour had lowered the age

eligibility for senior bowlers from 50 to 45 years old, so Mark Fisser, Aliso Viejo became a member and entered in its tourna-ments. In the August 28-29 WCST Ebonite Singles Regular Divi-sion tournament held at Cal Bowl, Fisser led the 8 games qualify-ing round with a good 1915 total (239+ average) to qualify for the 6 men match play finals.

But in the match plays, Fisser struggled and in the position round lost to the eventual champion John Sowell, Vista 227 to 148. Then Fisser held on to beat Bob Belmont, N. Las Vegas by 10 pins to place 2nd for $500.00. Sowell got $650 for first.

WCST also has a Super Senior Division for 60 years and over running in conjunction. The top 70 years old finishing high out of the money gets a prize too.

age can join by coming to this meeting. Angel West hopes to make 14 or 16 teams of 4-somes.

The new seaason will open on Sunday Sept. 12 with a sign up for teams at 2:30 and start at 5 PM. Interested bowlers can contact Secretary Treasurer Wesley Kay for more information at VP 866-761-3730 or email [email protected].

Larry Stephens, the sponsor of the BRY-LAW Super Sweeper Sidepot, will once again be adding $1,000 to the total collected.

Win 2 Super Pots all season & be even… the rest is profit, and that is before you even get to sweeps. 100% of all money collected will be paid out for the season.

Call Mike Cammarata at Del Rio Lanes for information. (562) 927-3351.

Starts September 13th for our... 25th year!

From The Desk of the CUSBC PresidentAs President of the California USBC I would like to welcome you to the 2010-2011 seasons.

The 2009-10 Championship Tournaments have concluded and winners should be receiving their checks very soon.

I would like to congratulate all the event division champions within the tournaments, a big congrats goes out to Laurie Soto in becoming the 2010 CUSBC Queens Tournament winner. The State Masters tournament will be held on Sept 10-12 in Bakersfield at AMF Southwest Lanes. It’s not too late to enter; there is a $30,000 guarantee. Entries available on the USBC website @ www.calusbc.com

The 2010 Women’s Championship Tournament will be hosted by the Ventura USBC WBA with the Open Championship Events headed to Fresno and Youth Championship Tournament being held in Oroville/Yuba City. Advance entries for all tournaments will be out soon; they are being sent to team captains and can be located on the CUSBC website @ www.calusbc.com

We are all very busy these days, however we do encourage all members to support their local association by participating in the events being held within your association, then support your state association activities as well as the national events. Check with the youth at the center where you bowl, see if they could use a volunteer, I’m sure they would appreciate all the help they can get.

Until next time, go out and bowl. Bring a friend along, help keep bowling alive. See you on the lanes. Linda Johnson

Shows His Aptitude in 590 Classicby Joy McGregor

ANAHEIM—Shawn St. Andre has an appetite for bowling and on Friday morning in Linbrook’s premier 590 Classic he demonstrated his winning approach on games of 279-238 and 223 for 740 and added a 228 to boast a league-leading 968 set. Shawn is new to our league this season and certainly is not shy in announcing his arrival -- with gusto! Nice pre labor Day bowling Shawn.

Frank, Father of the Bride to be, Bellinder is certainly no stranger to headlines and even tho’ his stress level is no doubt on high, he is still “Master of his Game.” Frank stroked games of 246-246 and 216 for 708 and added a 243 finale to post 951.

Drew, Groom to be, Parkin seemed to check his emotion at the door and bowled with excitement and anticipation tossing games of 205-257-230 and 234 to register 933. Nice control Drew!

Juan Sandoval has a “key” to the 900 Club and is a long-standing member as he proves his worth on games of 266-240 and 199 for 705 and added 204 to post 909.

Miguel Rosales, former “Super Sub” and now a regular member of the 590, shows his new teammates his value as he tosses games of 225-203-240 and 236 to garner a fine 904. Welcome Miguel!

More noteworthy scores: Jong Lee 264-873, Manny Magno 257-866, Jerry Knight 265-861, Shig Shozi 265-857, Larry Green 243-853, Cheryl Munson 245-840, Ron Douglass 255-835, Stacey Rider 244-825, Bob Gosnell 231-814, Don Gardner 246-813, Carl Adinolfi 268-811, John Velasquez 247-811, Terry Brent 232-811, Ron Marcus 224-810, James Blythe 246-809, Debbie Barrette 226-806, Kantral Williams 217-801, Martin Angulo 247, Janine Ditch 247, Norm Walker 236, Nancy M. JAT Farm Clubby David Gordon

ANAHEIM – Hello once again to the JAT Farm Club tourna-ment update, where our last tournament found us at Linbrook Bowling Center. The Farm Club had a small turnout of 21 bowl-ers due to a nearby center event, but those in attendance made the best of it with a few high scores and a lot of JAT points issued. The small field led to a second round of 10 bowlers with some exciting results. The JAT extends its thanks and appreciation to the management and staff of Linbrook BC for the excellent con-ditions and accommodations.

The five game qualifying round had Kevin Acosta leading the high scores with his tournament high game of 267. However, it was Parker Brooks that led the field after the five games at plus 26, behind reportable scores of 224-226. Well done gentlemen. Other reportable scores (220 or better) came in from Kirk Chui 228, Tristan Beaner 223, and Vincent Nolan 222. The cut to ad-vance into the second round came in at minus 87.

In the match play round of five games, the pins started to fly. Adam Dubia posted up 255 and 225 games respectively to end the match play round and jumping seven spots to get into the finals. Josh Gartrell put up games of 248-244-247 to also move into the finals round. Acosta and Chui both added games of 235, followed by Brooks 225 and Oscar Chan 220. Gartrell made the most though of the match play round jumping nine spots from the 10th position to leader after the 10 games.

In the finals we had the 5th seed Nolan (-4) take out 4th seed Chui (+11) 188-156. Nolan was then dismissed by 3rd seed Brooks (+48) 206-187. Brooks then had to face veteran 2nd seeded Dubia (+81) in a nail-biter of a match. The last frame though favored Brooks who squeaked by with a 213-212 win. Now Brooks had to face off with another veteran Gartrell (+192) in a best of three final pairing format. Already lined up from the previous match, Brooks jumped on game 1 with a 205-198 win. However, Gartrell found his shot in game two 233-217 and never looked back taking the tie-breaker match as well 210-203. This is Josh’s first Farm Club title and it’s been long overdue for the old man of the group. Congratulations Mr. Gartrell (even if you are a Raiders fan).

One side note takeaway for you younger bowlers. Josh signed up for the tournament with an extremely positive attitude (out of character??) mentioning that he had gotten plenty of rest, woke up feeling good, and felt he was going to do this. He used that positive feeling to get him through any of the lows he had dur-ing the tournament. I mentioned this because too many times I see you younger bowlers have a bad frame or a low score and it breaks your concentration and composure. That is hard to regain during tournament competition. Have a realistic view of your game frame by frame, shake off those 1-pin taps and keep that positive note going instead of dwelling on what just happened. You’ll find yourself advancing towards that first title, a lot faster than you can imagine.

Now following our tournament, The JAT held its 2009-2010 awards banquet, with a fine buffet and plenty of arcade games over at John’s Incredible Pizza in Buena Park. This year we had three Honorable Mention award recipients being; Gabriella May-field, Tristan Beaner, and Oscar Chan. The Farm Club’s 2009-10 All-Star team honors was awarded to Adam Dubia, Andrew Svo-ren, Bobby Hornacek, Brett Huntoon (repeat All-Star), and Wes-ley Low. The club’s Rookie of the Year went to Mr. Hornacek, while our Bowler of the Year was young Wesley Low, finishing his Farm Club career with a 201.10 average and 6 titles. Con-gratulations goes out to all of our season award winners. And for those moving up into the Open division, please remember what you’ve learn in the Farm Club and properly represent JAT, mak-ing me proud of each one of you.

This Sunday (9/12/2010), the JAT will hold its third tourna-ment of the 2010-2011 season at AMF Bowl-O-Drome in Tor-rance. Check-in begins at 8:15 with the action to start around 9:00. The following Sunday (9/19) we will have our first of the season PBA Challenge at Canoga Park Bowl. This looks to be a fun and diverse season if all goes well and those bowlers that haven’t come out yet are missing out quickly. Spread the word and I hope to see a mass of Farm Clubbers on Sunday.

JAT Farm Club Winner at Linbrook Bowling Center - August 29th, 2010 (R-L): Adam Dubia – 3rd ; Josh Gartrell – 1st; Parker Brooks - 2nd.

WCST

to watch the match play and finals so she could continue to learn what it took to compete at that level. Not only was it a great experience and learning opportunity, but it also served to ignite a competitive flame that continues to burn brightly.

Fast forward to June 2010 and Ashley was headed into the Teen Masters Regional qualifier at Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley, CA. By this time the competitive flame that had been ignited a year earlier had driven her to several accomplishments in her young youth bowling career. Ashley had bowled five 700 series with a high series of 760 and a high game of 298. She had two games of 11 in a row, had booked a 206 league average and a 171 PBA Experience League average. She had become an ever present contender in the local tournament clubs and received awards from National, State, and Local USBC Associations. No one could have guessed the outcome of the Regional Qualifier at Fountain Bowl, aside from maybe Ashley. It was her tournament; she ruled it on both the long and the short sport condition finishing the 12 games with a total pin fall of 2235 which was the highest among both boys & girls of all age divisions. As it turns out her qualifying score was the 5th highest in the Nation of all girls across all age divisions. Ashley was ready to have another go at competing in the Teen Masters National Finals.

Over the years Ashley had grown accustom to bowling in different centers some larger than others some old some new. Nothing, not pictures or words can prepare someone for the enormity of the National Bowling Stadium. I’m sure many of you that have been there can recall the first time you walked onto that concourse, now imagine how it must have felt for a 13 year old to know they were about to compete on those lanes over the next several days.

Over the past few years the Teen Masters National Finals has begun with a side tournament sponsored by Ebonite and called the Ebonite Bowl to Win Showdown. The format of this tournament is beat the board with six games bowled on a long sport condition followed by six more games bowled on a short sport condition. All participants receive the same newly released Ebonite bowling ball that must be used on the first shot of each frame then participants are allowed to use their spare ball for the next shot of that frame if necessary. Bottom line, everyone uses the same ball. Ashley had also bowled this tournament the prior year and finished 20th out of the 22 girls that participated. This year things would turn out a bit different. After the first six games on the long sport condition Ashley was sitting in 4th place out of the 31 girls participating this year. The next day on the short sport condition she outpaced the majority of the field for a strong 2nd place finish. In fact the tourna-ment champion was Thea Aspiras, of Chesapeake, VA that just the week prior had finished 6th in the Junior Gold Nationals. Apparently Ashley was not going to be intimidated by the size of the stage at the National Bowling Stadium.

As the qualifying rounds began for the Teen Masters National Finals things were off to a bad start for Ashley as she had difficulty getting matched up on the long sport condition and had finished the six games of qualifying outside the cut line. The next day’s six games on the short sport condition brought better results as she outpaced the field to move within -38 pins of the leader and well within the cut. Day three of qualifying and Ashley was now in very unfamiliar territory, she had advanced to the six games of qualifying on mixed pairs and had to make some sort of adjustment so she could handle the left lane with the long sport condition. A little more surface on the ball of choice for that condition and she outpaced the field by a landslide to finish firmly as the #1 seed with +110 pin lead over the 2nd place. Of course the lead didn’t matter anymore; it was on to single elimination match play best of 5. Ashley’s 18 game qualifying score was good enough to make cut into match play as the #15 seed in girls of all age divisions.

Okay, so you’re a 13 year old that just finished three days of competition across 18 games for a spot in match play on grueling sport conditions in the National Bowling Stadium. So what else could be done to add stress to the match play? Well, how about stream it live around the world on the PBA’s Extra Frame with cameras and lights all over the place. It would be both a test of skill and nerves, whoever could maintain their composure and execute the shots would prevail. This was a lot of pressure for any amateur bowler, let alone girls under 14. Oh, and while you’re bowling your matches you’ll have the attention of everyone in the stadium focused on you because you and your opponent are the only two bowling in the entire place.

Ashley’s semi-final match was against #4 seed 14 year old Sierra Kanemoto from Dayton, OH. Talk about nerve wracking, this match went to the 10th frame of game 5. Ashley managed to shake the nerves to seal the deal with some clutch shots at the end and took the match 3-2 (194-214, 247-135, 188-162, 160-225, 202-189). Sierra was a very tough competitor and should have a bright future ahead of her in the sport of bowling. The next day would bring the championship match. One year removed from the start of a dream and now she was just three wins away from making it a reality. Ashley went to bed early that night determined to get a good nights rest. The match wouldn’t be until 4:30pm the next day, so it would be a long day with a lot of time to think. She slept in later than normal the next morning. We got up and had a nice leisurely breakfast, went over to the stadium and watched the high school match play wind down to their finals. We hardly spoke of bowling, but I did take the opportunity to have one brief conversation. I reminded her of how she was a winner no matter what the outcome of the final match. I told her that to get this close to realizing her dream in just one year was an amazing accomplishment. We talked about how important it would be to stay calm. How it was inevitable that she would throw a bad shot, but how important it would be to not let one bad shot turn into a bad game. In the end we agreed that the bowler that kept their composure and stayed the calmest would emerge as the champion, and so it was. Ashley faced the #2 seed 14 year old Chevelle Holstein of Sparks, NV and quickly jumped out to a 2-0 game lead. Ashley lost her line in game 3 due to the lanes transitioning much more rapidly because of added lighting for the finals, but recovered in game 4 to win the title 3-1 (191-171, 224-158, 135-199, 195-146). Dare to dream, set goals; work hard and dreams may become reality. Congratulations Ashley we are all very proud of you!

Thanks to all of Ashley’s friends on the lanes for giving her support and cheering her on. Special thanks to her coach Mark Baker for all he does.

LAKEWOOD—The curtain rises next Monday, September 13, for the Las Vegas Travel league at Cal Bowl. A brief meeting is slated at 9:30 in the conference room so please be on time so we can start bowling promptly at 10 a.m.

I will be on deck earlier be-cause I will be bringing bowling shirts from past years and if you have any to donate, please bring them. Some of us are still wearing them, even if they feature names of bowling centers that closed years ago.

We also remind members they may write checks for USBC mem-bership renewal, but they must pay cash for league fees the first three weeks. Also, Steptember 20 bowl-ing site will be 10 a.m. at Cerritos. We will have the printed rules, prize fund and league schedule to distribute 10 a.m. September 27 at Valley View.

Thus far, no requests for subs on opening day and we are happy to report most of our regular subs will again be available. We regret one will be among the missing. Ardie Johnson lost her fight with cancer last month and we will cer-tainly miss her.

NEXT WEEK: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 10 A.M. CAL BOWL. 9:30 Meeting.
