PARISH NEWS

SUNDAY EVENING 5:30 MASS BEGINS SEPTEMBER 16

As our Religious Education Program be-gins, so does our Sunday evening Mass at 5:30 PM. This year we will begin on Sun-day, Sept. 16 and will continue through Advent - then it changes to Sts. John & Paul Parish for the second semester. If you are interested in this Mass, we are looking for Liturgical Ministers to help: Eucharistic ministers, Lectors and Serv-ers. Please call Joyce, at ext. 12 to help.

MASS CHANGE Beginning Wednesday, September 19, daily Mass will resume at 6:30 PM.

SPIRITUAL CENTERING PRAYER You are welcome to join us anytime for Centering-Prayer if you have an hour to spare. All that you need is an intent to be with God. We spend 20 minutes in silence followed by a spiritual reading and time of sharing. If you haven’t Centered before, don’t let that hold you back. We will be glad to show you how. It is a great way to experience peace and spiritual growth. You don’t have to commit to each date, just come when you can. We meet Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM & every other Wednesday evening at 7 PM (9/12 & 9/26).

BEYOND RENEW SIGN-UP SUNDAY September 15-16

As our autumn begins to fill the calendar, it is once again time to sign up for Beyond Renew. Our small faith sharing groups will begin once weekly meetings the week of October 7th for six consecutive weeks. We will begin sign-up for our groups on September 15 after Mass. Mark your calendars! Watch the bulletin for more de-

North American Martyrs Church, Monroeville

LOOKING AROUND.... This Catholic Church holds many treasures of faith and

love. We share them daily through scripture and liturgy and tradition. Let's look around and share them with someone. Extend the invitation to those around you to come and worship in the Catholic Church too. Few

come without a personal invitation so please do your part to help our community grow. Come with them on Sunday, Sept 23 at 1 PM (or after the 11:30 Mass) to see what the church offers to them and all of us. There is no obligation to join the church, just an invitation to come and see- inquire and ask the questions!

CONFIRMATION SEPTEMBER 22 AT 2 PM is not very far away. That's when Bishop Waltersheid will be here at SJN to celebrate the sacra-ment of Confirmation. Please hold our

Confirmation candidates in your prayers and please write a note of encouragement to one of them. Address your note to "Confirmation Candi-date" and place it in the box near the spirit book in the narthex- next to the open Bible. We need the entire faith community to support these young peo-ple as they take this important step in their faith journey. They have served the poor, come to-gether in prayer and participated in religious edu-cation classes- now they need your prayers and encouragement. Will you be there for them?

BAPTISM PREP Congratulations to you if you are expecting or have al-ready welcomed a new child into your family! To help you prepare for this wonderful life journey, we invite you to a Baptism prep session on Sept 23 from 10:30 till noon. Call the Rel Ed office to register.

EDUCATION

MARRIAGE PREP Lots of plans go into a wedding day. Don't forget the spirit of the marriage covenant. Plan now to join us on Satur-day, Sept 29 for a one-day pre-cana workshop that fulfills the requirements

for marriage prep in the diocese. Call the Rel Ed office now to register if you plan to get mar-ried in the next year. Marriage takes three- a man, a woman and God!

SACRAMENTS If you have a child over the age of 7 interested in First Reconciliation and Communion, or a teen past 10th grade who has not been confirmed or you, yourself, missed any of these sacraments growing up, PLEASE call Barb Stokes to begin preparation for these special times of coming closer to God’s life and love. Meetings have been held over the summer but I know we have missed people along the way and we’d love to help pre-pare for the fullness of God’s church in sacraments.

LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN If you have been coming to Mass and listening to the scriptures for awhile, then maybe you are being called to preach and teach the Sunday Scriptures to the chil-dren. Each Sunday we could share the Word of God with our children in their own special ways through song and story. We can only do this if adults or older teens volunteer to help. Are you willing to pray over this call to share the Word with children? Call Barb Stokes if you think this ministry is for you.

ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION There are so many ways to learn more and more about our faith. SJN will host a diocesan course on 5 Mon-day evenings beginning Sept 17. Give yourself the gift of time to ponder the mysteries of the CREED that we profess each time we gather. We know that your schedule is filling up fast so pencil it in now and make room for some adult education this fall. We are never too old to learn or to share faith and teach others. Let's do both - learn and teach this Sept. at SJN. To register, call the Rel Ed office or the diocesan website at www.diopitt.org.

LAST MINUTE GOOD SHEPHERD REGISTRATION

Our Good Shepherd sessions get underway on Tues-day, Sept. 18. If you have not yet registered, please turn in your form - there are still some places left. To give more parents a change to learn about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, we have scheduled a second Parent Meeting for Monday, October 22 from 7-8 PM. Come and find out what your children will be see-ing in the atrium this year.

CONSIDER GOOD SHEPHERD FOR YOUR PRESCHOOLER –

It is ideal for children to begin Good Shepherd at age three or four because it meets a deep need of children this age to be in relationship with God. The prayerful atmosphere of the room where we meet (the “atrium”) helps them develop a language of prayer that allows them to express their innate spirituality. In the process, they reflect on treasures of our Church – the Bible, Mass and Sacraments – and their response is always, “Thank you, Jesus.” Space is available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 9:30 – 11 am, also some after-work times from 6:30 – 8 pm. This could be the greatest gift you give your child since Bap-tism! Register by printing the on-line form and select-ing times that would work for you from “Program Of-ferings,” or call 412-366-5885 Ext. 12 for more infor-mation.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN All adult volunteers must be Safe Environment Compli-ant, and Protecting God’s Children Workshop is one step in the process. The Protecting God’s Children workshop is a child sex abuse and vulnerable adult awareness session. Upcoming sessions in our area:

St. Kilian, Cranberry Twp. Tues. Sept. 11 @ 6:30 PM

St. Catherine of Sweden, Thurs. Sept. 13 @ 6:30 PM Wildwood

SCRIPTURE STUDY September brings change in so many ways. School, weather, activities, sports and more all change our schedules. Maybe

it is time to add Scripture Study to your schedule. Con-sider joining an adult group on Thursday morning from 9:45 to 11:15 to study the coming Sunday Scrip-tures. No prior study is required just an open heart to hear and reflect on God's Word. Call by Tuesday if you need babysitting. The door is open in Conf. Room A and the coffee is on! Bring a friend!

OUR NEW SJN LOGO AND CHURCH BULLETIN Some of you may have been away from the Labor Day week-end and missed last week’s bulletin. The SJN Par-ish Communication Committee introduced the new Par-ish Logo and “tag line” as illustrated on this bulletin cover along with the new layout of the bulletin content.

The committee’s objective was met by designing a fresh new look for a logo that can be used on SJN parish publi-cations, letter-heads, business cards, etc., resulting in a more standardized appearance for all. In addition, changes were made in the over-all layout in an effort to make it more “reader friendly.”

Keep watching! With the initial “unveiling” last week, you will soon be seeing more.
