Stephen Ministry: Christ Caring for People through People

That’s the motto of Stephen Ministry. The Stephen Minister’s role is to bring God’s love into the lives of people who are going through a difficult time or experiencing a crisis. What do Stephen Ministers do?

They listen, care, support, encourage, and pray with and for a person who is hurting. And in the midst of this confidential, one-to-one, caring relationship, God’s healing love comes pouring through.

If someone you know is facing a crisis—large or small—and could benefit from the caring presence of a Stephen Minister, talk to one of our Stephen Leaders: Jack Raaths, Susan Raaths, Anna Armstrong, or Cathy Layne. Our

Stephen Ministers are ready to care for you!

Men’s Friday Morning Study Group

coffee at 9:15 am. Our guide this year is titled "God's

Promise: I am with You", by Amy Poling Sutherland. It

speaks to our circumstances, as individuals and a

community. The guides are $10, plus $1 shipping. RSVP to Susan

Raaths, [email protected] , 847-540-0710. All women are invited to join-

Rally

Sunday

PAGE 4

Rally is an interesting word. It can mean to come together again in order

to continue fighting after a defeat as in the troops rallied and held their

ground and won the battle. In the medical field we talk about a person

who recovers in the health, or even poise, as in a model rallying after

stumbling down the runway.

Rally can also be mass meeting either in a political protest or for showing

support. And a Rally is also the name for a competition for motor vehicles

in which they are driven a long distance over public roads or rough

terrain, typically in stages and through checkpoints.

Our upcoming Rally Sunday could mean a regrouping of our congregation after being spread out nation wise with summer vacation. It

could mean that we are regaining or recovering our spirits and health after the deadening doldrums of summer. Though we may not be protesting something, we are gathered together for a cause- the advancement of the kingdom of God, the increase love for God and neighbor. All of those are worth celebrating on our upcoming Rally

Sunday. However, Rally Sunday this fall highlights this grand road adventure we are on with God. We are in the words of Paul running (or

driving) the race set before us, and the green starting flag drops Sunday September 16. Come and not only see the adventure, but be the adventure... Come let us run the race together that God has set for all of

us... New Hymnals: Glory to God!

PAGE 5

With thanks to a generous donor, The Presbyterian Church of Barrington

will be introducing the new Presbyterian Hymnal, "Glory to God!" on Rally

Sunday, September 16th. With over 800 hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs,

this new hymnal will enliven our worship through a renewed investment in

hymn singing. Approximately 50% of included hymns will be from the 1990

Presbyterian hymnal. The remaining pieces will come from former

Presbyterian hymnals, other denominational songbooks, and individual

authors and composers. The hymn selections cover all major historical and

contemporary sacred genres, including music from six different continents.

In order to familiarize the congregation with the hymnal, Director of Music,

Kirsten Hedegaard and Organist, Rich Leasure will lead an adult

education class following worship on September 23rd at 11:15. An

Introduction to the Hymnal.
