On Wednesday, July 30th families from Belleville area schools lined up at Belleville West High School to get ready for school by earning their free backpack. Families were required to check in with their registered school, where they received a bingo card. They then proceeded to the cafeteria where many vendors were ready to greet them, share information important to them and their families and stamp the student’s card. After the student visited 15 or more of the 30 vendors, they were able to trade it in for a free backpack full of school supplies. Participants and their families were also encouraged to stay and enjoy complimentary hotdogs, chips, water, dental exams, physicals and outdoor activities. The outdoor area was set up with a rock climbing wall, the fire department’s smoke house trailer, games, music and a large inflatable. The Education Committee gave back to the community through their distribution of more than 680 backpacks at the 5th Annual BackPACK to School. The backpacks were stuffed by volunteer students of Belleville East and West. They contained a variety of school supplies including markers, folders, paper, crayons, pencils, erasers, water bottles and more.

Thank you to all of the volunteers, schools, vendors and sponsors for making an impact on so many families and young individuals. On Friday, August 22, the individuals making up the 2014-2015 Leadership Belleville Class started their nine-month journey with a kick-off breakfast. The new class was joined by some of their coworkers, alumni of Leadership Belleville and the facilitators of the program, Vertical Performance.

The class was inspired by words from the 2013-2014 class president, Larry McLean, as he discussed how the program is not only created to make you a better professional leader, but to also make you a better leader of your personal life. He also encouraged the class to embrace this experience and go all in.

The class will continue their program with a two day retreat in September at Pere Marquette.

Lindenwood University - beLLeviLLe

Page 11

Lindenwood University-Belleville With a new extension center, more degree programs, and two brand new dormitories, the 2014-2015 academic year at Lindenwood University-Belleville promises to continue the record-breaking growth and exciting developments that have become tradition for the 10-year-old campus. LU-Belleville begins the school year with an anticipated enrollment of 1,300 undergraduate day students and 1,000 graduate and undergraduate evening students. The campus also plans to host its highest number of international students, with an estimated 160 coming from 43 different countries. Collinsville Extension Center LU-Belleville will make school history this fall when it open its first extension center at 1101 Eastport Plaza Drive in Collinsville, Ill. The 15,000-square-foot space will be used for undergraduate and graduate classes in the accelerated evening program, as well as graduate classes in education and professional counseling. With seven classrooms, including a science lab, student computer lab, lounge area, and faculty/staff office space, the center will meet a need for the Belleville campus’ growing evening student population. Its central location in Collinsville will also give students convenient access to major interstates 55, 70, 255, and 270 and will bring new revenue opportunities for the many nearby retail and restaurant businesses.

Residence Halls Accommodating the rising residential student population at Lindenwood Belleville has proven to be no small feat. The campus will open two dormitories capable of housing 200 students each, all within one year’s time. A women’s residence hall opened for students in December 2013, and the new men’s dormitory, the Fred J. Kern Residence Hall, is scheduled to be completed in October 2014. The additional facilities will allow LU-Belleville to offer on-campus housing to approximately 1,000 students.

Veterans Success Center On August 7, Lindenwood Belleville unveiled its newest facility specifically serving veteran students. The Major General William L. Enyart Veterans Success Center was officially dedicated and honors Enyart, now a U.S. Congressman. The center will provide lounge and study space for veteran students to meet one another and spend time between classes. It will also serve as a resource for veterans trying to adjust to college life or seeking to learn more about GI Bill benefits and tuition assistance through the armed forces. In 2013, the campus had 78 veteran students enrolled in classes. Today, there are 115 VA students on campus, and that number is growing.

Degrees and Faculty Beginning this fall, Lindenwood Belleville will introduce six new degrees and 10 additional full-time faculty members to its Academics Department. The campus will now offer a Bachelor of Arts in biology, a Bachelor of Arts in education studies, a Bachelor of Science in athletic training, a Bachelor of Science in exercise science, a Master of Arts in school counseling, and an Education Specialist degree. An emphasis in homeland security has also been added to the campus’ undergraduate criminal justice program. With the addition of 10 new terminally degreed faculty members this year, Lindenwood Belleville’s percentage of full-time faculty with the highest degree in their discipline stands at an impressive 97.5 percent. The campus employs approximately 40 full-time professors and more than 180 part-time.

HOLLAND CONSTRUCTION SERVICES COMPLETES CORTONA AT FOREST PARKHolland Construction Services (Holland) recently completed construction on the new Cortona at Forest Park. This new apartment community is the first 5-story all wood structure in St. Louis and features a modern design. St. Louis Magazine recently named Cortona at Forest Park one of the Top 5 New Residential Developments in St. Louis. The one- and two-bedroom luxury apartment units range in size from 575 square feet to 1299 square feet and feature a gourmet kitchen with full size appliances, large windows, and huge walk-in closets. Nine to ten foot ceilings add to the spacious interior feel.

Residents of Cortona enjoy private, reserved parking and a gated entrance. Other features include an interior courtyard with a three-tiered swimming pool (lap pool, tanning ledge, hot tub), multiple lounging areas and cabanas, grills and an outdoor kitchen. The expansive clubhouse includes a fitness room, coffee bar, business center, and gaming area.

Cortona is located within Balke Brown Transwestern’s 26-acre The Highlands at Forest Park mixed-use development off I-64/40 in close proximity to the shopping, dining, and cultural facilities of Forest Park, Central West End, and Clayton.

Steve Brown, president and CEO of Balke Brown Transwestern, commenting on the success of the project stated, “The input and direction provided by Holland Construction during all phases of design and construction for Cortona at Forest Park made the project an overwhelming success. We are very happy with the quality of the facility and the professionalism of the services that Holland provided.”

This is the second project Holland has worked on with Balke Brown Transwestern. The first was Parkway Lakeside Apartment Homes in O’Fallon, Illinois. Steve added that “Holland proved on Parkway Lakeside Apartments that you could build a high quality project on a tight schedule, within budget and ultimately, this is what drove us to select Holland for this project. And you have met our expectations again!”SWIC POISED TO HELP MEET SAFB CYBERSECURITY NEEDS: $16 MILLION PLAN FOR TWO NEW CYBER SQUADRONS WILL GENERATE OPPORTUNITIESSouthwestern Illinois College “is poised to help the community and Scott Air Force Base with any and all training needs” associated with the recently announced $16 million U.S. Air Force investment in two new cyber squadrons at SAFB, according to SWIC President Georgia Costello, Ph.D. The Air Force projects “a boost to the area economy by creating 320 military and civilian jobs,” according to The Associated Press.

“The most important role we will continue to play is offering ‘stackable’ credentials, which allow our students, many of whom find gainful IT-field employment while still pursuing a degree or certificate, to build their resumes as they go,” Costello said. “Stackable credentials are also enticing for full-time IT professionals who may want to enhance their employment value and compensation.”

Although higher-level cybersecurity jobs require advanced postsecondary education, all the foundational work in information technology can be accomplished at SWIC at the lowest tuition. SWIC also anticipates forming IT and cybersecurity transfer partnerships with other local colleges and universities.

SWIC currently offers a Network Associate certificate requiring 16 credit hours of Cisco network training, which prepares students to take the Cisco Certified Network Associate certification exam. The college also offers stackable course work beyond the certificate to help those completers meet Cybersecurity Specialist requirements. These courses prepare students to take additional certification exams such as: CCNA Security, Microsoft Technology Associate Windows Server Administration Fundamentals, Security+ and Windows Server Network Infrastructure Configuration.

“The stackable-track benefit is completing Network Associate certificate training, gaining employment with that certificate, earning additional certifications and then coming back for more courses as professionally required or personally desired,” Costello added.Costello also sees a financial-incentive connection to its military students, as SWIC serves the largest veteran and active-military population among public colleges and universities in Illinois. “Cybersecurity work often requires the highest military clearance, and many military personnel already have such clearance,” Costello explained.

THEBANK PRESIDENT, CEO TOM HOLLOWAY RETIRINGAfter 10 years of distinguished service and leadership, Thomas E. Holloway, President and Chief Executive Officer of TheBANK of Edwardsville, announced recently that he will retire on May 29, 2015. “It’s been a tremendous honor and privilege to work with the wonderful people at this great institution,” said Holloway, who became only the 12th president in TheBANK’s 146-year history when hired in April of 2005. “Time sure does pass quickly, and I know the next nine months will as well. But I truly feel that it will be the right time for me. I never planned to work forever, and I’m turning 65 years old next year. I’m ready for the next phase of my life.”

According to Robert Plummer, Chairman of TheBANK’s Board of Directors, Holloway’s retirement plans come as no surprise.“When we went through the process of hiring Tom nearly 11 years ago, it was clear that he was looking to work another 8 to 10 years, and next year will be his 10th as president and CEO of our bank,” he said. “Of course, we would like for Tom to stay another 20 years. He’s been a great leader and a tremendous asset to TheBANK. But we also understand his decision to want to spend more time with his family and enjoy the next part of his life. We wish him nothing but success and happiness in retirement.”Mark Shashek, Chairman of TheBANK’s holding company, THE BANC ED CORP., said a search committee has been established to find a replacement, with the goal of having someone in place to work with Holloway during his last few months to make the transition as smooth as possible.

The results of Holloway’s leadership at TheBANK speak for themselves. During his term as president, TheBANK grew from 14 to 18 locations while its assets have grown each year, rising from just over $1 billion in 2005 to more than $1.6 billion today. Meanwhile, The Investor Group at TheBANK, its trust and financial services division, grew from $600 million to over $1 billion in assets during his tenure. Holloway was able to help guide TheBANK to success despite the longest and most catastrophic financial crises in this country since the Great Depression.

“There have certainly been some rather unique challenges along the way,” Holloway said. “But there is a great group of people working at TheBANK and a great management team in place, so I’m confident that the success we’ve shared over the past 10 years will continue well into the future.”

In addition to guiding TheBANK to continued financial success, Holloway has also been active in the communities throughout the area. He currently serves on the board of directors of the EGHM (Edwardsville) School District 7 Foundation, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, McKendree University, the SIUE Foundation, University Park at SIUE, the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association, Memorial Group (parent company of Memorial Hospital) and Memorial Hospital East. A current member of the Belle-Scott Committee, he has also served on the boards of the Belleville District 118 Educational Foundation, Hospice of Southern Illinois, the Home Builders of Greater Southwest Illinois and Junior Achievement, as well at the Advisory Board of the Okaw Valley Council, Boy Scouts. In addition to a variety of other charitable and community development commitments, he has served as President of the Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Illinois, the Greater Belleville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Leadership Council Southwest Illinois. A former Chairman of the Board of the United Way Illinois Auxiliary Board, he also chaired the 1996 United Way annual campaign. In retirement, Holloway said he plans to spend time with his family, including his wife of 35 years, Lisa, their three children and one grandchild.

BANK OF BELLEVILLE RECEIVES REGULATORY APPROVAL TO MOVE AND PURCHASES SITE IN DOWNTOWN BELLEVILLE FOR NEW HEADQUARTERS; RELEASES CONSTRUCTION TIMELINE Bank of Belleville is pleased to announce it received all required regulatory approvals and finalized the purchase of property at 213 and 219 South Illinois Street where the bank plans to demolish both existing structures and build the new banking headquarters it expects to occupy in summer 2015. Bank of Belleville will relocate from its current location at 720 West Main Street.

The new headquarters will contain sufficient space to allow Bank of Belleville to continue serving its growing customer base for years to come. Design plans are being finalized, but demolition at the site is expected to begin in the coming weeks with construction following soon after.

Bank of Belleville has been located at 720 West Main Street since its inception in 2005 and has enjoyed steady growth that has created the need for additional space. Only a few blocks from its current location, the 200 block of South Illinois Street will offer greater capacity, visibility and convenience for the bank and its customers.

“We are excited to move forward with the construction of a new bank headquarters for Bank of Belleville. We have maintained a steady path of growth over the years and expect that to continue into the future. This new space will provide a more suitable floor plan as well as additional square footage. We are currently near capacity so the additional space will be well timed.” said Kevin Pesko, president of Bank of Belleville. “Downtown Belleville has worked well for us and remains the most central location to serve our sprawling customer base which is spread throughout the greater Belleville area. We are very pleased with the cooperation we received from the City of Belleville and are excited to continue to call downtown Belleville home.”

Bank of Belleville invites you to like its page on Facebook, follow it on LinkedIn, visit online at http://www.bankofbelleville.com or call to speak with one of the many experienced members of its team at (618) 233-6400.ST. ELIZABETH’S TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL CLUB® ACHIEVES SELECT DISTINGUISHED STATUS IN FIRST YEARSt. Elizabeth’s Hospital is pleased to announce their Toastmasters International Club has achieved Select Distinguished status by completing 7 of 10 annual goals set by Toastmasters International, a nonprofit organization, focusing on communication and leadership development. Required goals met by St. Elizabeth’s club include: meeting the minimum membership requirement, the ability to recruit new members, completion of Competent Communicator and Competent Leadership Project Manuals by members, Club Officer training completion, and submitting timely reports to Toastmasters International.

Members who received recognition for earning the Competent Communicator (CC) Award and Competent Leadership (CL) Award for the first program year include: Joe Kippley (CC), Melissa Sterling (CC), Emily Wilson (CL), and Carol Wylie (CL).

“Select Distinguished status is the second highest status a Toastmasters club can achieve falling between Distinguished and President’s Distinguished status,” noted Tom Gillard, Toastmasters Division C Governor for District 8, which covers eastern Missouri and southern Illinois. “Of all 107 clubs in District 8, 47 reached one of these distinguished levels. This recognition is especially noteworthy since St. Elizabeth’s Club achieved this status in their first eligible year.”

St. Elizabeth’s Hospital chose to charter a Toastmasters International club as a beneficial colleague development opportunity in 2013, and has since opened the club to the community as part of St. Elizabeth’s mission to serve as a Teaching Hospital for residents of the region. To find out more about Toastmasters International, visit www.toastmasters.org or contact Leslee Martin at [email protected].

WORKSHOP READIES EMPLOYERS FOR OSHA INSPECTIONSOSHA is “back in the enforcement business”—is your company ready?Find out at the OSHA enforcement workshop from Selsius™ Corporate & Career Training of Southwestern Illinois College and the Illinois Chamber of Commerce. This full-day seminar will assist employers in preparing for an Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspection and for handling all phases of OSHA proceedings. Now is the time to be prepared if OSHA shows up for an inspection. The OSHA enforcement workshop will be Thursday, Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the SWIC Belleville Campus, 2500 Carlyle Ave. It is preapproved to offer 4 HR Certification Institute (HRCI) credits and has been submitted for approval to offer 4 Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits. ST. ELIZABETH’S HOSPITAL RECEIVES PLATINUM AWARD FOR CARDIAC CARENCDR ACTION REGISTRY–GWTG PLATINUM AWARD RECOGNIZES HIGH STANDARDSSt. Elizabeth’s Hospital has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2014, making this the second consecutive year to receive this prestigious award. St. Elizabeth’s is one of only 256 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor.

The award recognizes St. Elizabeth’s Hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that St. Elizabeth’s has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

To receive the ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award, St. Elizabeth’s consistently followed the treatment guidelines in the ACTION Registry–GWTG Premier for eight consecutive quarters and met a performance standard of 90 percent for specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that over 700,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others.

“This award is a well-deserved achievement for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. It reflects the hard work and dedication of the colleagues who care for some of our most seriously ill patients and their families,” said Bonita Schnieder, MS RT and Director of Heart and Vascular Services at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “The implementation of these guidelines requires successful coordination of the cardiovascular team and emergency personnel and is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients. We are honored to receive this award at the Platinum level again this year.”
