Moving Forward

T h i s coming year will mark a decade since I arrived at P J T C . M y c h i l d r e n w e r e t w o years old and now they are beginning 5th

grade! We have seen a great deal of growth, change, challenge, depth and incredible community building in the last decade. We have had births and deaths, sickness and recovery, the merger of CST and PJTC, and the arrival of our Executive Director Eitan Trabin and Cantor Ruth. Our annual budget has nearly doubled to

over $1 million, we have supported and visited Israel, learned lots of Torah, helped refugees in Darfur, raised money and awareness for Union Station, Foothill Unity and Friends in Deed, celebrated 90 years of our synagogue’s life and had lots of fun along the way! This is just a taste of what we have accomplished, and it is only the tip of what we can accomplish in the coming years. Thanks to your amazing commitment to PJTC in the last six months, we are back on solid financial footing and we are looking to secure our financial future with the help of Eitan Trabin, Matt Ober and our finance team, under the able leadership of Sandy Hartford. As we approach these holy days, we have much to be grateful for,

I invite you to join Rabbi Grater and me on Saturday September 8 at 7:00 PM to prepare ourselves spiritually for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur by attending a very wonderful service called Selichot (forgiveness). The Selichot service is designed to help us direct our hearts and minds to the process of teshuvah, in order to give us a chance to reflect on the changes of behavior that we wish to make.

Our internal journey will begin during the Selichot service, to examine the deeds of the past year, seeking forgiveness from God, and committing ourselves to improve our behavior in the New Year. Some of the prayers and music for the Selichot service are taken from the services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This provides a musical transition between the “old year” and the New Year.

Selichot services are usually held late on a Saturday evening after Shabbat is over. There is also a custom of holding Selichot services close to midnight, which is related to the belief that the Gates of Heaven open the widest at midnight. Therefore, it is believed, God will hear our prayers most clearly at this time of night. Year after year, the Selichot service puts me into the High Holy Day mood. Selichot is very special. Part of the story is the glorious music. Equally important are the words of the liturgy that convey the season’s distinctive theological message: Our God is a forgiving God. This is the night of forgiveness, a step essential to the healing of the heart. Selichot, the penitential prayers said from the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur, ask God for forgiveness. If we want forgiveness, we have to offer it and ask for our own. As we are merciful, so is God merciful to us.

The word for the process of self-examination, making amends, and asking forgiveness is called teshuvah. The word for forgiveness, mechilah, comes from the root, machol, which means circle. We turn within ourselves to find answers; it’s our creative process. And when we enter the courageous and creative work of

self-judgment, we too turn within for answers. Our process also requires the addition of making direct amends to the one we have harmed. To face ourselves, to face the one we’ve hurt, to say I’m sorry, is so hard! It needs teamwork. First, the individual has to choose the path, then we gather as a community to strengthen each other to walk the path,

and finally, we recognize that the lightness of heart that follows the deed is God’s gift.

It is equally difficult to forgive those who have harmed us. Forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting, it doesn’t mean accepting. It simply means that I will no longer take responsibility for your behavior by being victim to it. I break that relationship to you when I forgive you for what you have done to me. Offering forgiveness will bring the grace that asking forgiveness brings. Most importantly, by behaving in these ways, we demonstrate that we are in God’s image, the One who forgives and pardons abundantly.

God wishes us to turn away from sin and helps us to do so. The High Holy Days focus almost exclusively on the notion of teshuvah, a Hebrew word that means “turning away from sin.” In Judaism, the word “sin” can refer to many different things. We sin when we break God’s laws. We sin when we hurt others. We sin when we do things that hurt ourselves. During the High Holy Days we have many opportunities to demonstrate to God and to ourselves, that we have made sincere efforts to change our behavior from that which is hurtful or wrong to that which is constructive and healing. We also have many opportunities to reflect on our behavior and ask for God’s help to lead better lives.

I ask for your forgiveness for the sins that I have committed to you, my congregants, and I forgive you for the sins that you have committed towards me. May this year bring you good health, happiness and prosperity.

L’ Shana Tovah, Cantor Ruth

Religious School News

One of our wonderful office volunteers casually said to me “You are going to love retirement, but who is going to make all those lovely speeches at the Bar and Bat Mitzvahs?” I sighed heavily, clomped up the stairs to my office, let a few tears flow and decided I really needed to talk about this with you and really needed to use the R-word I have been avoiding since my decision to leave after 26 years of directing the Religious School and 11

more as a teacher here at PJTC. It’s just time. It’s time for me to change course and it’s time for the temple to continue to re-assess its vision and find that person who will fit. That special someone is out there and the wheels are in motion to search for him or her, and I will not leave until that person is in place for the 2013-2014 school year.

Right now I can’t imagine my life without the Religious School as my main focus, next to my family, of course (although my husband would probably say the order of focus was quite often reversed). I will definitely miss….well almost everything about this job….the people, the challenges, the privilege of seeing that our work makes a difference.

But change is good and I am also looking forward to what life holds next. My first order of business will be to search for some productive, gratifying and worthwhile projects that will make me feel like I am still contributing to society in some small way. That’s really all I can say for now and when the R-word rolls off my lips smoothly and unencumbered by a tearful gulp, we will talk some more, I promise.

In the meantime, please know that we are in the planning stages for another productive, exciting and creative year here at LBS. We have added three new members to our excellent faculty and staff. Our Office Administrator is Dorienne Elston who is a member of PJTC with lots of administration experience. She has very positive energy that will help our office run both smoothly and efficiently. Gal Kessler-Rohs will teach both our Baynaim and Ganeinu Classes. Her teaching credits include positions both stateside and in Israel. She has an MA from Columbia University in Early Childhood Education. Lauren Adler will teach Kita Aleph and will also be the B’nai Mitzvah Tutor. She is a credentialed teacher, has taught at several Religious Schools in the L.A. area as well as locally at Waverly School, is fluent in Hebrew and has wonderful ideas about making learning fun.

Our first day of classes is Sunday, September 9 and we welcome all parents to join us in the Sanctuary for a welcoming assembly at 10:00 AM. We are holding a Parent Orientation Coffee for new and returning families on Wednesday evening, September 5 from 7:00-8:30 PM. Please RSVP.

You know the old Yiddish saying that “Man plans and God laughs”? My prayer for all of us for the coming year is that we are afforded the health and good fortune to dream our dreams, envision our visions and make our plans and that with God’s help, it will be so.

Interfaith Study Groupby Cecilia Fox, PJTC’s ISG representative

All are welcome at our next meeting on Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Islamic Center of Southern California, 434 S. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles. Our carpool will leave All Saints Church in Pasadena at 4:15 PM. At 5:00 PM promptly, we will welcome guest speaker, Kun Gu Rinpoche, a Buddhist nun, who will speak about her life.

We bring food for the potluck vegetarian meal which follows, and enjoy getting to know each other in conversation on the speaker’s topic.

Our group is made up of members of Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center, Islamic Center of So. California (Los Angeles), and All Saints Episcopal Church (Pasadena)--a wonderfully diverse, interesting group. We gather monthly at one of our institutions, in rotation. Our purpose is to grow in understanding, to be open, respectful, curious, and interested in learning from each other.

Note: We encourage you to read for future discussion, our summer reading list’s first item: Religion Gone Astray: What We Found at the Heart of Interfaith, by Pastor Don Mackenzie, Rabbi Ted Falcon, and Imam Jamal Rahman, published by Skylight Paths, $16.99. Barbara Levinson, Sisterhood PresidentIt is amazing to me that it has now

been over one year since Sisterhood first asked me to be their President. I am now into the second year and have the opportunity to look back at the many fine Sisterhood–sponsored events. We had a fabulous Purim Mishloach Manot where Purim Bags were collected and distributed by the

hard-working Purim committee headed by Ricky Calvin. Sheila Padlipsky and her large committee of volunteers (too numerous to name) earned money standing in the sun and rain to act as docents for the fabulous Pasadena Showcase House, this year a house in La Canada. And of course, who can forget the tireless efforts of Ruth Kaye, who almost single handedly manages our wonderful New Year's greetings booklet. With the gifted help of Karen Brown, our New Year's greeting booklet earned over $8,000 last year.

Many other events took place during the year including an amazing Sukkot Potluck spearheaded by Nancy Carlton, (with our 2012 potluck scheduled for October 5) a wonderful poetry and jazz night held in the lovely back yard of Carolyn and Scott Siegal, challah sales organized by Ricki Lane, and the lovely Torah Fund Chay’ay Olam event chaired by Bobbi Sloan, with the luncheon expertly organized again by Nancy Carlton.

Sisterhood sent two of its board members to a leadership training workshop in Las Vegas, made donations to B’nai Simcha, Weizmann Day School and the Jewish Federation Book Festival.

All in all, Sisterhood has had a wonderful, fun–filled and inspired year of events, some fund–raising and others simply fun–raising, (Match n’ Marry and the Cantor’s Concert to name a few).

We are looking forward to our Artisans Boutique on November 18 (see article on this page).

At our last board meeting, Sheila Padlipsky suggested that Sisterhood develop a Mitzvah Corner to be published monthly. That is such a great idea that I am now asking members to email me and let me know about special women doing special things, little and big. so that I can start a regular Mitzvah Corner in my column. I will publish what we are all doing (or have done) every month or whenever I see something happening or you report a special effort you observed. We need to let the world know how wonderful we are and this is a good way.

By the way, ladies, don’t forget to mail in your Sisterhood dues. Yep! It is that time again.

Below are pictures from our last Rosh Chodesh and Installation.

It's Happening with Sisterhood!

Calling all Artisans: Sisterhood Boutique is Back! Sunday November 18

After a two year hiatus, PJTC Sisterhood is now seeking artisans for their fall boutique. The 2010 event was a great success and enjoyed by shoppers, exhibitors and volunteers alike. Two dozen exhibitors sold many one-of-a- kind creations including jewelry, tallitot, scarves, baby sweaters, gift cards, quilts and wood toys.

According to 2010 exhibitor, Linda Rourman, “ My overall experience as an exhibitor was phenomenal. I had no idea what to expect and I sold so many tallitot

that it blew me away. I’m definitely looking forward to exhibiting my work this coming November. I can’t wait!”

The boutique is a fundraiser for Sisterhood with 20% of proceeds donated by the exhibitors. In 2010 several very generous exhibitors – Edie Taylor, Ruth Kaye, Moshe Aviram, Pearl Tyree, and Ruth Roberts – donated 100% of their proceeds to Sisterhood. Edie said that “It was great to see the amount of talent in our community. It was fun to participate and support Sisterhood at the same time.” Chairperson of the event, Carolyn Siegal, added “ It was just so amazing to see the creative capabilities of our temple members and the many beautiful things they created. We hope that this year’s event will be bigger and even better!”

There is still time for exhibitors to sign up, although the event is filling up. Both temple members and nonmembers are invited to participate. To get more information on the event and to download an application form, go to http://www.pjtc.net/Downloads/ArtisanBoutique.pdf.

This year’s Boutique Committee also includes Ruth Failer, Debbie Guest, Ellen Dinerman, Karen Brown and Suzie Kustner. Anyone wishing to volunteer the day of the event or join the committee can contact Carolyn directly at (626) 794-7760.

The October FLAME will promote the event for shoppers.

Women’s Book Club by Connie Taus

Anyone interested in reading and discussing books is most welcome to join us. We meet on the second Thursday of each month, in Wohlmann Hall at 7:30 PM.

Our next meeting will be on September 13. The book is Midnight’s Children, by Salman Rushdie. The novel is set in India as it was transitioning from a colony to a partitioned country. With the help of Saleem Simai and his gift of telepathic powers, we are told the story of two children, one Muslim and the other Hindu, born and switched at birth at the hour of India’s independence

Our October 11 book is Catherine the Great, by Robert Massie. This biography details the life of the woman who after a disastrous marriage to a grandson of Peter the Great, became empress of Russia and ruled for thirty-four years guided by the ideas of the Enlightenment.

Books are available at Vroman’s at a discount.

Sisterhood Promotes Tzedakah During High Holy Days

In the UnetanaTokef prayer on Rosh Hashanah, we are reminded that three things are necessary to convince God to forgive our sins: teshuvah (repentance), tefilah (prayer) and tzedakah (charity).

The last of these, in a sense, is the most difficult, because there is no formal setting for its accomplishment. Yet it is as important as the first two. Isaiah reminds us of the importance of tzedakah in the haftorah that we read on Yom Kippur morning. In this portion, Isaiah tells us that the fasting is useless if it does not lead to concrete action in the form of Gimilut Hasadim (acts of loving kindness).

PJTC joins with United Synagogue congregations across America to participate in Operation Isaiah. The program asks each congregation to develop projects to meet the needs of the less advantaged members of our community. Once again, Sisterhood is coordinating a food collection—items which will be taken to Foothill Unity Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing for individuals and families in need. Foothill Unity Center’s goal is to help local people in crisis attain self-sufficiency by providing food, clothing, crisis services and referrals for other critical needs.

From Erev Rosh Hashanah until the end of Sukkot, PJTC members are asked to bring donations to the synagogue. Sisterhood members will distribute shopping bags and lists of needed items and bags on Erev Rosh Hashanah, to be filled and returned to us during this period.

This High Holy Day season, give all you can, not just for forgiveness, but because there are those in need. For further information, or to learn more about how you can become involved with Foothill Unity Center, contact Laura Shutman Luna at (909) 239-9907.

From the Eugene and Marilyn Fingerhut Memorial History Project

by Michael Several, Project ChairThis is the first of a four part series on Pearl HasslerAfter attending a Friday night service at Temple B’nai Israel

of Pasadena on January 29, 1932, Albert Einstein singled out the music for praise, noting in his diary that it was “in general moving and poetic, especially the ‘Scholem Alechim.’” What Einstein heard that night was a choir composed of five women, which according to the 1932 temple year book was “indispensable to the Friday night services.” Pearl Hassler directed the choir and accompanied on the organ, and as the congregation’s soloist, probably sang the Scholem Alechim.

Hassler had been involved in the congregation’s music since 1924, starting as the organist and shortly thereafter becoming the choir director and soloist. During the forty-year span she served the Pasadena Jewish community, Hassler worked with seven rabbis, from Rabbi Raphael Goldenstein to Rabbi Maurice Galpert. During her association, the Pasadena congregation had three names—Temple B’nai Israel of Pasadena, Pasadena Jewish Community, and Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center. She led the congregation’s High Holy Day services in at least five locations, ranging from the initial temple at Walnut and Hudson, the B’nai Israel Chapel (now known as Knell Chapel), and what is now called Galpert Sanctuary. In addition, she performed at special events as early as 1929, when she played the organ at the confirmation rites. By the time she retired in 1964, she had served the congregation as a soloist, choir director, vocal instructor, and piano and organ accompanist. What makes this extraordinary record of long service particularly unusual is the fact that Hassler was not Jewish.

Born January 26, 1884 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Pearl Elizabeth Sleeth showed musical promise at an early age. When she was 16, she became the organist of the Emory Methodist Church, where she met her future husband, Norman Hassler, the church’s music director. After their marriage, they went on the road, performing as a duet with a wide repertoire. They performed Bach, opera, and light classical music at women’s clubs in major cities, where she was able to display her talent as a soprano. She reconnected to church music after moving to Alhambra in 1913. A few years later, she and her husband moved to Pasadena, where she quickly became the music director of the Lake Avenue Methodist Church and later the First Baptist Church. She also began a 53-year relationship with the Pasadena mortuary, Turner & Stevens, serving as their organist. During World War I, the Hasslers were frequent performers at Caltech, where they helped calm the intense students with their singing. They also led a community singing group initiated by the City of Pasadena and were members of a quartet that sang with the Pasadena Community Orchestra. After the war, Pearl Hassler was a soloist at the Hollywood Bowl when it opened in 1920 and sang the soprano role in a 1922 performance of the Messiah with Lawrence Tibbett. Marjorie Sinclair, the Pasadena Star-News music critic at the time, wrote that “When Pearl Hassler gets up to sing, I thoroughly relax and enjoy myself…She has the voice and tone of real music, and to hear her sing is a real joy.”

randomly selected, to identify the issues we felt were most important to the temple. We did not set a timetable or other parameters. We then came together to identify all the issues identified from among the groups. The issues ranged from new carpet and facilities maintenance to greater spirituality, and everything in between. Then each of us had an opportunity to identify our top three PJTC priorities. From among the list of many issues emerged these three: 1) financial stability; 2) conflict resolution and healing; and, 3) deeper spirituality and more meaningful prayer. Of course each of us has our own interpretation of what these three items mean but in general, I think our identified priorities reflect balanced leadership and a focus on three broad topics that intersect with most aspects of synagogue life.

This does not mean the board will not take on other issues or have other priorities in the coming years. We all have learned from the past few years that priorities shift with unanticipated demands. The July strategic planning exercise was just a starting point. We will continue throughout the year with other planning exercises, so feel free to share with us your thoughts, ideas and suggestions on PJTC priorities for the future.

As for the immediate future, PJTC is poised for a great year of growth, maybe not so much in terms of numbers, but in terms of strengthening our community in many ways. We continue to put efforts into our facilities maintenance thanks to the help of Robert Brown and his staff, along with our VP of Administration, Jeffrey Landau. We just completed another successful grounds clean-up day which was as much about community building as it was about cleaning up for the start of a new year. My thanks to each of you who participated in the planning and the execution. Our membership drive is in full swing with the capable leadership of Membership VP Rebecca Golbert and Membership Committee Chair Lindsay Wetmore-Arkader. Many membership events are scheduled between now and the High Holy Days, so join us and bring along a potential new member. Finally, it’s hard to believe that Cantor Ruth just celebrated her one–year anniversary with us. She looks forward to becoming further acquainted with each one of us throughout the coming year, as well as leading us in prayer with Rabbi Kollin during Rabbi Grater’s sabbatical.

I hope you fully enjoy the few remaining days of summer and I look forward to greeting you at PJTC as we welcome another year of growth, promise, spirituality and celebration together.

Israel MattersThe Israeli Scouts’ Friendship Caravan’s Visit to PJTCby Anita Landau

The Tzofim Israeli Scouts’ Friendship Caravan had to reschedule their planned visit to PJTC in August and, as a result, the Caravan arrived three weeks early, on Monday afternoon, July 16. After a long hot drive from Las Vegas, where they had entertained

at a JCC that morning, nine parched sixteen- and seventeen-year-old Israeli Scouts pulled into our parking lot with their two leaders. They were grateful to feel the cool breezes as they started to unload their lighting and sound equipment from the trailer attached to the van. After a quick pizza dinner on the Katz Terrace, the five boys and four girls set up their makeshift stage. Over 100 people came to the event, many with young children in tow, filling up every seat in our breezy Katz Terrace. Visitors came from other synagogues as well. The children sat in the front rows, many on the ground, and waited eagerly for the show to begin. And what an energetic and talented group of singers and dancers these high-school-aged goodwill ambassadors from Israel were. Many times the children got up to dance with the Tzofim and everyone was caught up with the music and stories from Israel. For our mature crowd, they even sang one song in Yiddish. In addition to songs about Israel, they performed a medley of Disney favorites for the younger children..

After the show, the audience and Tzofim devoured ice cream sundaes and lemonade. The teens chatted with their young audience, continuing the magical feeling of being so close to Israel.

Jeff Landau, chair of our Israel Committee, made all the arrangements for the Tzofim to visit PJTC and to entertain the B’nai Simcha Preschool children the next morning. Host families from PJTC, Temple Beth Israel in Pomona, and Temple Sinai in Glendale, provided housing for the Scouts after the show. On Tuesday morning, the hosts drove their guests to CST, where the Tzofim put on a somewhat shorter program for the children of the preschool. The young children were mesmerized and danced during the entire show. The Tzofim spent an hour after the show visiting with the children.

Afterwards, the troupe gathered at the Landau’s for a barbecue lunch, some swimming, resting up, texting, tweeting,

Dovrei Ivrit–Hebrew Speaking Flourishes in Weizmann Day School’s Kindergarten by Lisa Feldman, M.A. Ed. Head of School, Weizmann Day School

We are ve r y p l e a s e d t o announce that we have enhanced our Hebrew language immersion program with the adoption of Chalav u’Dvash (Milk and Honey), a new, innovative Hebrew language instruction program which is designed especially for early

childhood education. This new curriculum, developed by the Jewish Agency for Israel, offers a broad range of developmentally appropriate activities and interactive teaching aids and is a wonderful prelude to the Tal Am Hebrew materials we use in first grade. Chalav u’Dvash focuses on conversational Hebrew, thus teaching the language by using it in everyday situations. The contents of the program derive from the children’s everyday life and are therefore more likely to become part of the child’s everyday vocabulary since this is how children naturally acquire language.

At Weizmann we are fortunate to have Geveret (Mrs.) Carmit Eliyahu work with our kindergarten class. An energetic and creative talent, Geveret Eliyahu began her tenure at Weizmann in the fall of 1995, and has been a true asset to our success in transmitting the values of Hebrew education at our school. This newly developed program was made known to us by Mrs. Ofra Dor, a renowned and beloved Hebrew educator who spent most of her career at Stephen S. Wise Temple schools. An esteemed colleague, Mrs. Dor presented these materials to us and we are most grateful.

High Holy Day Ushers Needed The High Holy Days are just around the

corner, and we are once again recruiting ushers. Our ushers’ main job is to make

congregants feel welcome and secure and to help them have a good experience at PJTC. Ushers will be deployed somewhat differently this

year in order to better greet people and improve the environment in the

sanctuary. There will again be two shifts for evening services and three during the day. Your help in filling the nearly one hundred slots throughout the holidays would be much appreciated.

You can volunteer by emailing Phil & Judy Callahan at [email protected]. We will also be happy to answer any questions. Every effort will be made to give you your requested time and location. We will be holding an usher training session Sunday, September 16 at 10:00 AM. Please make every effort to attend.

Clean-Up Day at PJTCDespite the heat, on Sunday

morning, August 19, about 25 adults and children volunteered their time, effort, energy and expertise to beautify our temple grounds. The group represented all aspects of our PJTC family: teens, parents, grandparents, Sisterhood and Men’s Club. They painted, cleaned, inside and out, Wohlmann Hall, Knell Chapel, Galpert Sanctuary, the

Social Hall and even stocked the Judaica Shop. PJTC is ready to “wow” returning and new members as

they get ready to attend the High Holy Days services, return to religious school, and enjoy the myriad activities we have scheduled for the fall season.

This clean-up day created camaraderie and showed the type of special congregational family we are, reminding everyone of the importance of volunteering for the synagogue we love. Thanks to all those who came and gave of themselves.

The Authors Among UsThis is a new feature in the FLAME, prepared by the PJTC

Library staff. It will feature a monthly story about one of the authors in our community. All nominations are welcome. These will not be full-fledged reviews, you can find those on Amazon; these columns are meant to be introductions to the work of people in our community who are writing, editing and publishing books.

This month our featured author is Temple member Patricia Bunin and her recently published book: Password: SeniorMoment.

If you are old enough to remember LA Times columnist Jack Smith, then you will enjoy Password: Senior Moment for two reasons. First, you’re old enough to get the humor, and second, the warmth and humor of the short articles is reminiscent of Jack Smith. The short essays in the book are reprints from Patricia’s weekly column in the Pasadena Star-News. It is nice to read simple stories about people of a certain age facing new technologies, sometimes winning and sometimes being forced to regroup.

Patricia is having a book signing at Vroman’s on Thursday evening, September 17 at 7:00 PM. You are all welcome to attend.

Micha Feldmann to Speak on Exodus of Ethiopian Jews

Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 10:00 AMJewish Federation of San Gabriel and

Pomona Valleys550 S. Second Avenue, Arcadia, CA

In dramatic fashion, Operations Moses and Solomon, in 1984 and 1991, respectively, rescued the Jews of Ethiopia (“Beta Israel”) and brought them to Israel. A little known operation continues, in which a related group of Ethiopians, known as Falash Mura, are currently immigrating to Israel. The challenges these

new immigrants face in becoming full members of Israeli society are equally daunting, and much work is being done to prepare them.

Feldmann has been helping Ethiopian families on both ends of their journey since 1970. He will speak about his newly released book, On Wings of Eagles. Told through diary entries interspersed with the stories of many Ethiopian Jews in their own words, the book is a gripping account of the Jewish Agency’s coordination of Ethiopian aliyah. Feldmann’s crowning achievement as the Jewish Agency’s representative and Israeli consul was to oversee the immigration of over 14,000 Jews from besieged Addis Ababa in the dramatic two day Operation Solomon.

on forgiveness. The f i l m

focuses on the stories of people

who have experienced acts of unimaginable

violence. The F Word is about the ‘real’ people whose stories seem

both close and far away. They have lost loved ones on both sides of the conflict in

Northern Ireland, in the apartheid struggle in South Africa, in the Oklahoma City bombing and

on September 11th. The film aims to touch the heart of the audience, not to descend into arguments about who

is politically right or wrong, but to consider alternatives to retribution and the cycle of violence–presenting often more complex and challenging choices of risking dialogue between “enemy,” “perpetrator,” and “victim.” At a time when people around the world are hungry for change, The F Word explores the power of ‘forgiveness’… and, its companions: revenge, violence, reconciliation and peace.

Theatre Havurah NewsOn Thursday evening, October 18 at 8:00 PM, the Theatre Havurah will go to our local theater,

A Noise Within, to see Shaw’s classic “The Doctor’s Dilemma.”

The dile)mma in this play is who should be saved: a kindly colleague who serves the poor, or an extremely talented but unscrupulous young artist. Shaw’s incisive comedy is an indictment of both the

medical profession and the artistic sensibility. The Havurah will meet before the play for dinner,

information on location to follow. Cost for each ticket is $30.00. To make a reservation, send your check to Ricky Calvin. For more information, email her at: [email protected].

Each year PJTC members trek miles through the forest (metaphorically speaking) to gather sch’ach (palm fronds) for the roof of the sukkah. We will be gathering sch'ach (palm fronds) at the LA County Arboretum, Thursday or Friday, September 20 or, 21 at 9:00 AM. It is always a fun outing to do some "hands on" Judaism. Bring gloves (a must), long handle nippers or a small saw. Respond to the PJTC office or to Cara Jaffe to let us know you are coming. Watch for email or web page updates on the exact date and time.

High Holy Days Service Schedule Yasher Koach to Cary Presant!Besides congratulating Cary on two new grandchildren,

best wishes are in order to celebrate his new book, Surviving American Medicine, which will appear this month. It tells people how to use the health care system more effectively to find the best doctors, health insurance and hospitals, how to know if their doctors are good, when and how to get a second opinion, how to find affordable medications, and how to deal with chronic or life-threatening illnesses.

Thank You from Pasadena Highlandsby Roslyn Terfansky

Pasadena Highlands Independent and Assisted

Living for Seniors has a wonderful thank you for each

person or couple that rents a unit at the Highlands and notifies them that they were referred by the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center. After the move-in, the Temple will receive $1,000 as a special thank you from the Highlands.

Call Denese Reistetter at (626) 791-1981 to hear about the special dinners they have for Hanukkah, Passover and whatever the residents want to celebrate. Also, every Friday afternoon, thanks to some very special Temple members, we have what is called Jewish Studies. It’s a little time of discussion, remembrance, movies and speakers. We end the studies with a Kiddush and blessing over the wine and challah.

Call me if you have any questions.

and Facebooking, and celebrated Tomer’s 17th birthday with a delicious chocolate cake. They sang Happy Birthday in Hebrew with a peppier tune and lyrics than we do in shul. Their leaders were Karen, a computer engineering student whose parents are from Tunisia, and Omer, a 14th generation Israeli who served as a medic in the IDF and plans to attend medical school in Israel. At 4:00 PM the Caravan departed for Camp JCA Shalom in Malibu, where they were to spend a few days entertaining and mingling with the campers. We were sad to see them go. The teens were wonderful guests and their enthusiasm for Israel is thoroughly contagious. The Tzofim have traveled up and down the West Coast and had visited Arizona before their gig in Vegas. They had the opportunity to see Yosemite and the Grand Canyon as they made their way to various Jewish camps, centers, temples and schools since their tour began in June. There are three other caravans that follow routes in other parts of the country. They all reunited in New York before their return to Israel in early August.

much to be proud of and so many more dreams to be realized and fulfilled. As we embrace the good things, we must also let go of the negativity; as we celebrate the successes, we must accept the disappointments and let them go; as we move into the new year, 5773, let us seek to strengthen the bonds that tie us together and never allow hurts, pain or disagreements to weaken our resolve. As our liturgy teaches, we are an agudah achat, one, strong, vibrant and awesome kehillah kedosha, holy and sacred community.

The Yamim Noraim, High Holy Days, offer us a perfect framework for entering into our communal makeup. This time of year, when we examine our hearts and souls, ask for forgiveness, offer forgiveness, do teshuvah, and seek to improve upon our lives, we can also let go of any pain or hurt we may be carrying, not allowing our souls to be tarnished by carrying grudges. In Leviticus 19, known as the Holiness Code, the Torah reminds us that in order to be truly a holy people, we must not bear a grudge, seek revenge or hate one another in our heart. I have been so proud to be the leader of this community for almost a decade, and I am so grateful for what we have accomplished together. I am well aware that not everyone has been happy in the last decade with some of the direction we have chosen, which is totally fair. I have been sad to see a few families leave our community. Through the years, with the help and support of amazing lay leaders, though, PJTC has grown stronger, is a model of stability and success and is attracting new families and members because of what we are achieving together. Our congregation is poised to enter the coming year with hope and possibility, even as we get ready for some other big transitions, including my sabbatical and more importantly, the retirement of my beloved friend and teammate, Debby Singer. I hope everyone who is a member of PJTC, whether for one month or 50+ years, is here with a full heart, a loving spirit and is ready to work hard for the betterment and sustainment of our blessed community.

I take my role as spiritual leader very seriously and with that role I know that I sometimes succeed and sometimes fall short. As we approach these holy days, I humbly ask your forgiveness if I have hurt you, intentionally or unintentionally. I will try hard to do better in the coming year. I want to thank our amazing staff for their daily commitment to PJTC, and our lay leadership, particularly our president Matt Ober, who help run our synagogue with grace, efficiency and deep love. Cantor Ruth and I hope you come to pray with open hearts and open mouths–our tefillot soar higher and higher when every one of us, from the front row to the back row, sings, prays, cries, laughs, thinks and ponders the nature of existence, for that is why we come to synagogue at this time of year. No passivity, no watching, no observing–Judaism and prayer is about engagement, vulnerability and awesome harmonies.

Franci, Ella, Noah and I wish each of you, your families a year of peace, joy, health, Torah and moments of connection; may our community, our nation, the State of Israel and our world know more peace and harmony. Shana Tovah, G’mar Chatimah Tovah, may we all be sealed for life!

From the Cemetery CommitteePJTC owns plots in two cemeteries: Home of Peace in

East Los Angeles and Rose Hills in Whittier. Plots may be purchased in advance, with a convenient payment plan, no interest charged. We handle all the paperwork for you.

We no longer have any plots available at Mount Sinai but we have a good relationship with their management. For those wishing to purchase pre-need plots there, please do so through PJTC. This does not alter the price to you, but it gives a financial boost to the temple.
