    SEPTEMBER ISSUE

Heritage Month serves as a catalyst for nation building. This Heritage Month we salute South Africa's most vulnerable people which include our 726 residents. At the ABH, we care for the aged, non-ambulant, victims of domestic violence and children.

Dr Thameshree Naidu works at the Faculty at the Institute of Healthcare Improvement. She said: “I saw that the ABH was located in Chatsworth which is a COVID hotspot and I thought that I could contribute some of my public health as well as clinical expertise to support the ABH in their efforts to protect the vulnerable people in their care. I urge other healthcare practitioners including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and social workers to contribute in some way”. NATIONAL ARBOUR WEEK

Our Home celebrated National Arbour Week by planting a tree. Our children also drew pictures of trees and they learnt about the significance of being eco-friendly.

Our elderly residents celebrated World Senior Citizens Day on 21 August 2020. We encouraged our residents to enjoy sunshine, board games and talks from our social workers.

    WORLD SENIOR CITIZENS DAY

We will be celebrating Honour the Aged Week from 30 September until 6 October 2020. We recognise the contribution that our elderly residents have made to their families and to our community. We will honour our elderly residents by providing special meals and we also want to buy them much needed clothing.

    HONOUR THE AGED WEEK

We strictly adhere to COVID-19 protocols. Despite the protocols, precautions and vigilance, from late July to 8 September 2020, 29 residents tested positive and nine residents sadly passed away whilst hospitalised. We extend our deepest condolences to the residents' families and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. 17 residents have recovered and are back in the ward, two residents are in isolation at the ABH isolation ward and one resident is in Clairwood Hospital. As of 8 September, 23 staff tested positive: 22 staff recovered and reported back to work and one staff member absconded. We are guided by the Department of Health's protocols and we acknowledge the mammoth task at hand to keep our staff and residents safe as such we remain vigilant and committed to robust COVID-19 protocols.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work and learn. At the ABH, perhaps the most fundamental change that had to be made was to find a way to ensure continuity of education for the 100 children we have in our care. With the stop/start of public schooling, we had to ensure continuity for our learners and improve their already low literacy levels. We employed seasoned, dedicated educators to home school our children. The results have been so gratifying, both in the way our children have embraced their new education system as well as the improvement in their literacy levels. It also reinforces our belief in a holistic education system. This Heritage month we invite companies and individuals alike to make education your social responsibility too. Help us build a brighter future for our children page by page, by assisting us to raise R300 000 to meet the cost of worksheets, books and teachers’ salaries. The 1860 Heritage Centre and the ABH has collaborated to kick start an online auction of three framed canvas prints. Bidding will be done on the 1860 Heritage Centre’s Facebook page between 24 September and https://www.facebook.com/1860heritagecentre30 October 2020. Help educate ABH’s children’s page by page.
