HI ALL,

I trust you are having an enjoyable and successful semester so far. It was great

to meet many of you at the O’day event and the O’fest party which followed on

11 August. Thanks to all the club executives and Union staff for all your hard work

in making the day such a success.

This week, I want to challenge you to get outside of your comfort zone. Do

something extraordinary and challenge your own status quo. Find a new activity

or event that you would not usually take part in, and go along anyway. Take part

in one of the surfing trips organized by the UTS Union, try a new sport you have

not played before, or put your hand up for a position of leadership within a club

or society. It seems that the same rules apply for growth of character as growth

of muscles at the gym: if you don’t push yourself and get outside of your usual

boundaries, you don’t grow.

One such exciting opportunity is to lend your voice to the Board of the UTS Union

by voting for one of the potential candidates. Voting is now open, and I strongly

urge you to consider who you believe would be a great representative of the

student body.

There is much to look forward to this semester, so get on the bandwagon before

it is too late and assignments take over. Australian University Games is just around

the corner, so to the athletes who are competing, get excited!

Have a fantastic week, get outside of your comfort zone, and see you around soon.

LAURENCE WAINWRIGHT

{PRESIDENT, UTS UNION}

Pub quizzes & trivia nights are thought to have begun in the UK

around the 1960s. Nostalgic college students and others began to

informally trade questions and answers about the popular culture

of their youth. The first known documented labeling of this casual

parlor game as “Trivia” was in a Columbia Daily Spectator column

published on February 5, 1965.

In 2005, a trivia master sued a contestant for defamation after he was

accused of cheating & was awarded over $25000 in damages and court costs!

CORONA

“Where’s the party?” is probably an oft-asked question by Corona and Corona Light drinkers. They are busy and energetic people who are also extremely extroverted. They’re people-persons who seek out the company of others whether in a group or just one-on-one. Corona drinkers do more and see more people in one day than most people see in a week. But the life-of-the-party Corona drinkers also have an altruistic side; they care deeply about other people and see themselves as giving and warm.

HEINEKEN

There’s a slang term that could sum up Heineken drinkers: posers. These self-assured people believe they are exceptional, get low scores on modesty and high scores on self-esteem. They love their brand badges – a role the distinctive green glass bottle may play – and in fact, this group is attracted to luxury products in general. They are also energetic and dynamic and enjoy being both the center of attention and in the middle of the action.

Page 11: September Issue- Playground

VB

Cheapest thing ever. You typically don’t find these drinkers in bars, as they are your typical singlet wearing, traditional beer drinking hard working Aussies that want a bang for their buck when it comes to their beer!

CROWN LAGER

Ah yes, you’re the pretentious beer drinker who is trying to impress those around you with your sophistication. So what if you know the difference between an IPA and a lager? Sure, the beer is a conversation starter, but don’t brag about spending eight dollars per bottle. Bragging is not cool.

EXTRA DRY

Football loving wallflower? Yup. TED drinkers teeter on the edge of conformity. TED is always a good go to beer for those people who haven’t explored anything else. Therefore, it’s a safe bet. Learn to take some chances! It’s ok, nobody will hurt you for trying something different!

ABSTAINERS

It probably doesn’t take a psychographic profile to discover that those people who refuse to drink beer at all don’t like to loosen up very much. They are socially conservative and see many issues as black and white. Teetotalers honor tradition and authority and prefer a less-hectic social life.

you!

HAHN

These drinkers are all about the burgeoning American craft beer scene; they care a lot about taste, brew-style and unique qualities. Which is great because hey, it’s important to be passionate about something and it might as well get you drunk. Granted they may spend a little too much time concerned with beer but it’s not like they have a problem. Seriously, they have it under control. Trust us.

APPTASTIC!

XCUBE: A rubick’s cube for your phone. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to solve the cube then here’s your answer. Note: again, here’s an app that was free for a while, but is now $1.99 – still cheaper than a new Rubik’s cube, but more expensive than one at a garage sale. You make the call...

FALLING BALLS: Just tilt your phone to run left or right to avoid falling balls. It looks very plain with cheapest and simplest graphics, but it’s so addictive. When the guy is crushed to death by the ball, the bloody picture and piercing scream will make your heart broken and want to play it again.

DRUM TAB: Created by one of our very own UTS entrepreneurNERDs! For all you drummers out there, now you can record, edit, playback and export drums just the way you like it… in tab format. This clever little APP lets you record and play drums by touching the animated drum kit on screen or by plugging in a V-Drums or General Midi drum kit into a Midi Mobilizer. www.rollerchimp.com

MASTERquiz

1. When the UTS Tower was being built, the excavation site filled with water after heavy rain so a Sydney journalist took out to the lake in a boat.

2. On Melbourne Cup day each year, students from the Engineering Faculty would race each other from the Glasshouse Bar to the Engineering Department on level 24 – one level for every horse in the race.

3. The UTS emblem was designed by Harry Williamson, a noted graphic designer who also designed the original $100 note.
