Maybe you, like me, can picture perfect moments from this past summer. There were sunsets and conversations and cups of coffee and bonfires and road trips I would have loved to freeze in time to savor the beauty a little while longer.

It comes as no surprise that time can simply not be frozen. The seconds tick by like a faithful legion of soldiers in an army of Energizer bunnies. My hope of slowing time to enjoy the present can lead to a helpful examination of perspective.

John Piper, in one of my newest favorite quotes, explains our eagerness to take in the simplest pleasures at the expense of the greatest joys. He says, “Your soul is stuffed with small things, and there is

no room for the great."Sometimes, it can be like that

when we want to freeze moments. We fill ourselves with temporary pleasures and then become consumed by guarding those pleasures or moments and fail to see the greater pleasure that awaits.

What we fail to realize is that the most beautiful moments on earth are only a reflection of what is to come. If we are content to freeze time in temporary pleasures, are we not settling for a mere reflection of the real beauty that is to come?

On the other hand, we may want to freeze time because we are fearful that the moments will end and with them our happiness. We are afraid that the soldiers marching time will carry off the joy we glimpsed for a

moment. Sometimes we cling so tightly to moments that we cannot move forward in the present. We are afraid because we are convinced it cannot get any better.

Think of how many AMAZING moments you would have missed if you spent all your time living in the moments you treasure from the past. As we start this new year, I challenge you to look ahead with an eternal and confident gaze. Remember that the best moments here are a reflection of what is to come in eternity. Face each day knowing God can surprise you with moments unlike you’ve ever seen!

The guidance office at ALP exists to support you in your academic endeavors and to promote a healthy lifestyle. In our role as guidance counselors, we make decisions informed by Christian values and in the best interest of you, the student.

We encourage you to use the Guidance Office as a resource for college preparation, course planning, emotional stress, relational issues, organization skills and study habits.

a positive part of the ALP community and we think what they are doing is marvelous! Read about your fellow classmates’ creativity and unique spirit and then see if you can land yourself in the spotlight!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

This year, those students who are nominated and chosen to be in the student spotlight will be recognized at an informal ceremony at the end of each semester. These students will receive a certificate, enjoy special refreshments during lunchtime, and have the opportunity to engage in delightful discussion with the Guidance and Principals offices.

Though you may be unsure if this is an incentive equal to the task of behaving well, I would challenge you to test it out. We are not only hoping to recognize students who excel academically, but also those who are exceedingly thoughtful, helpful, and genuine. Set goals for yourself that will set you apart from your classmates.

We want to encourage you to believe you are capable of doing great things. Stop by our office - we would love to hear how we can help you with your goals!

POST-ITS

The passing of time is consistent, but some days this summer I was convinced it was moving much faster! Before I left in June, I made a list of books I wanted to read over the summer. As I watched the days fly past, I knew I wouldn’t get to every book on the list. One chance encounter with a missionary from Yemen led me to read this book by Mosab Hassan Yousef.

I will admit that, as I was flipping pages, I was skeptical. I just couldn’t believe all these near-death encounters could possibly happen to someone who was now writing books and appearing everywhere in public. His experiences will shock and intrigue simultaneously and here is why: Yousef’s father is one of seven men who began Hamas, a radical Islam terrorist organization.

He grew up with a great love for Islam, but then witnessed how destructive the belief system could be. After spending time in a prison and enduring a painful interrogation, Yousef began to work with Israel as a spy. To make his life even more spiritually confusing, Yousef met a man one day who invited him to a Bible study. At one point in Yousef’s story, he was seen as one of the key leaders in Hamas while a spy for Israel’s special forces while growing in his understanding of Jesus Christ. Yousef finally came to the realization that he needed to claim Jesus as Lord in his life, but you’ll have to read the book to see how it all turned out.
