SEPTEMBER 2018 Monthly Newsletter of Salem UMC, Morganton, NC Salem Scoop 1206 Salem Road / Morganton, NC 28655 / www.sumcm.org / 828-433-6600 September Series: Living a New Playlist Back in the day, a playlist was the entire list of songs a radio station could draw from to play on air. Today, anyone can make their own playlist. With download and storage capability on all our electronic devices, we can create and hear our music anywhere with a voice command or the touch of a fingertip. We all have our favorites and they can become our mantras, or theme music, or motivation. We all have playlists. Not just specially organized music downloads, but we are bombarded daily with the messages of the world around us which sometimes offer us a false hope or a different truth. We hear hundreds of messages from marketing firms on any given day. We hear words from coaches, parents, teachers, and pastors. We even hear voices from years before bouncing in our heads and hearts telling us about our worth, our abilities, and our dreams. These messages make up the playlists of our life. More than ever before, we are distracted, anxious, and overloaded by the playlists of our culture. Some of us are tired of these playlists. Some of us know we cant live up to them anymore. Some of us are looking for a different set of songs to listen to. This September, youre invited to join us for a sermon series Living a New Playlistbased on Jacob Armstrongs book A New Playlist. Each week we will consider what it means, in a world with so many different messages, to listen to the song Jesus is literally singing over us. Jesuswords are playing over us. What would it mean to create a new playlist for our lives that allows us to hear every day what Jesus is saying? It begins with choosing which voices you will listen to. Well have fun learning a popular modern song each Sunday that connects with our scripture and intersects our lives. In the end, it just might help you follow a new playlist for your life. Armstrong notes, Jesus has a song for you that goes straight to the heart. It tells you the truth. It s about doing less and being more. He has a playlist that cant be downloaded on iTunes. Youll find it in an ancient book, in a bro- ken but held-together community called the Church, in a Spirit that can speak to you from the deep places of Gods heart.Sept 2 – You SayLuke 18:18-30 Sept 9 – Leave a Light On- Mark 4:35-5:15 Sept 23 – Wont Worry Bout a Thing- Matt. 6:25-34 Sept 30 – Whatever It Takes1 Cor 9:19-27 / Acts 17:22-28 BTW – Just for fun, if you have a favorite song that has become an anthem for you text it to Pastor Norm, along with your name, and we may use it before the announcements one Sunday like a prelude. 828-980-4139

Some of us are looking for a different set of songs to listen to. This September, you’re invited to join us for a sermon series “Living a New Playlist” based on Jacob Armstrong’s book A New Playlist. The Reading Buddy program kicks off its 5th year of working with Salem Elementary. The

importance of this program and time spent with 1st and 2nd graders can be seen in the progress

children make over the course of each year.

The time spent serving is flexible and can be a time and duration that meets your schedule. If you

are interested in learning more, please contact Barb Schneider at 438-4074. A background

check/application is required to serve and orientation is offered.

If reading isn’t your cup of tea but you’d still like to serve, there are plenty of other ways

you can be in ministry at SES too. Let's continue expanding this wonderful outreach ministry!

The Anatomy of Peace: Wed. Night Book Study, Sept 19, 26 What if conflicts at home, at work, and in the world stem from the same root cause? What if we systematically misunderstand that cause? And what if, as a result, we perpetuate the very problems we think we’re trying to solve? Through a moving story of parents who are struggling with their own children and with problems that have consumed their lives, we learn from once-bitter enemies the way to transform personal, professional, and global con-flicts. This book will transform your family, job, church, and relationships in a remarkable way. If you read 1 new book this year, read this! But it’s written as a parable. So you have to read the book to discover its fruit. You may order your own copy or download an ebook. (Contact the church office by Sept 9 if you want us to order a copy for $10). Class will be held in the parlor beginning Sept 19 for four Wednesdays.

“I love this book. Having read it, the circumstances I encounter every day seem different to me—whether in sports, business, or family life, the ideas apply to every facet of life.” DANNY AINGE, GM, THE BOSTON CELTICS “A book that could change the face of humanity.” MARION BLUMENTHAL LAZAN, holocaust survivor & bestselling author ______________________________________________________________________________________________
